for just in the third time in u.s. history voters will decide whether to recall a state governor. by this time tomorrow morning republican scott walker should know whether or not he's been replaced by milwaukee mayor democrat tom barrett. tracie potts joins us more from washington with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. reports give walker a bit of an edge but on election day you never know. walker held his last campaign rally last night and he said this election will hinge on truth. he also talked about his opponent, milwaukee mayor tom barrett, who, as he put it, has been down in the dirt and gutter in terms of the ads that you'll remember that this is a race that gained national attention after voters there called for a recall election for governor walker as a result of collective bargaining rights that were stripped from public employees, led to huge protests there in wisconsin.

now in his final campaign event tom barrett said that scott had -- scott walker had divided the state, calling it a 16-month civil war. this has been watched very closely on the national scene because it mirrors what we're seeing across the nation, the divided electorate, conservative republican governor, democrat with very different ideas about how to create jobs there. interestingly, walker beat barrett for governor two years ago. lynn? >> tracie potts for us in washington, that. elsewhere former president bill clinton joined president obama on a fundraising swing in new york city last night. during a peach introducing the president, clinton seemed to make an effort to counter his recent comments widely seen as flattering to mitt romney's background in business. >> he's got the order right, president obama does. growth now, restraint later. the romney republican plan is austerity and more unemployment

now and blow the lid off later just at the time when we're worried about high interest rates. >> the former president also told obama supporters last night a mitt romney presidency would be, quote, calamitous for the nation and the world. despite her husband being hospitalized england's queen elizabeth is pressing on with her diamond jubilee celebration honoring 60 years on the throne. earlier they arrived at st. paul's cathedral for a thanksgiving service. last night the festivities included a star-studded concert and spectacular fireworks display. anna bell roberts filed this report last night. ♪ >> reporter: 10,000 people got to see an amazing concert outside of buckingham palace. ♪ >> reporter: there was

performers from the queen's six decades on the throne, hoping to appeal to all generations. the royal family was there but one notable absence. prince philip, the queen's husband, he's spending tonight in hospital, taken there earlier today suffering a bladder infection. buckingham palace tells me it's not serious, just a precautionary measure, but he is turning 91 in a couple of days time and any health scare at this age has to be taken seriously. >> he's taken on well but ladies and gentlemen, if we shout loud enough he might hear it in hospital. >> reporter: after the concert the queen lit a beacon, one of 4,500 to mark her jubilee. she will no doubt feel prince philip's absence very keenly. she travels to the cathedral by

carriage for a special service. we understand he will be kept in hospital for the next two or three days. annabell roberts, nbc news, london. now here's a look at some other stories making news "early today" in america. in a newly released video in indiana showed the terrifying moments that led to a school bus crash last month. the driver fell out of his seat apparently after hitting a bump. then lost control, sending the bus on a wild ride before crashing into a house. luckily no students were aboard and the driver's injuries were not life threatening. he was, however, cited for not wearing a seat belt. in florida the weather was heavenly. a halo form around the sun. after clouds and ice crystals combined to create the ring. and now to the opposite end of the country, in hawaii, the difference was night and day. this is called a moon bow or a lunar rainbow. it comes from just the right combination of a full moon, wind and rain. light reflects off the surface

lake city will be windy and wyoming very windy also. behind the storm where the upper-level low is, it's just very chilly out there right now. some of the steadier rains have ended around spokane, but as far as bellingham to seattle is concerned, light, chilly weather, cloudy with on and off light rain and showers here in the high elevations in the cascades getting some snow too. further to the south we mentioned the snow video came from, right now not too bad. there was some snow showers showing up, but it's starting to dissipate on the wane. the forecast for today, cloudy, chilly, raw day in the northwest, one more day of sun and heat in phoenix and cools off for you. that's a look at you included w flag warning. we can only improve from here in

in germany an adult film actor has been arrested for allegedly mailing body parts to top political parties in his home country of canada. he was taken into custody in an internet cafe in berlin while reading media coverage about himself. in pennsylvania today the sex abuse trial of former penn state coach jerry sandusky begins with jury selection. he's accused of abusing ten boys over a 15 year period. in iceland, a homecoming to a house near a volcano that was buried 39 years ago under ash and rock during an eruption. the woman who owned the house has been finally allowed to return. and you have a chance to see the planet venus crossing in front of the sun which we will not see again from earth for more than 100 years. just a reminder for you, you do need to use solar glasses or telescopes with special filters. do not look directly at the sun.

here's an early look at how wall street will kick off. the dow opens at 12,101 after falling 17 points yesterday. the s&p inched up a fraction, the nasdaq added 12. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei rose 86 points while in hong kong the hang seng was up 73. stocks finished mixed as fearful selling tapered off monday. investors anxious about the euro zone debt crisis looked ahead to today's emergency meeting of a group of seven global powers holding talks. to discuss possible solutions. on the street home builders were among the day's biggest losers. pulte group lost 6%, while dr horton fell 5. elsewhere chesapeake energy the second biggest natural gas producer rose 6% after announcing it will replace more than half of its board of directors. delta airlines had its steepest drop in three years after missing a may revenue target. this morning australia qantas

airways plunged to an all-time low after forecasting a possible 91% drop in yearly earnings. a major upset, apple is planning to oust google maps as a preloaded app on the iphone and ipad. starbucks dipped in late trade after announcing a $100 million purchase of la boulange bakery, in an effort to freshen up its food offerings. walt disney hoping to combat childhood obesity with strict new advertising policy that will ban commercials featuring candy, sugared cereal and fast food on disney owned stations. further evidence of facebook's challenge of turning users into dollars, a new poll finds four out of five members have never bought a single product or service as a result of ads or comments on the social network. if you're feeling cramped on your morning commute there's a reason. public transit ridership jumped 5% so far this year. that is the largest surge in 13

good morning. if you're just waking up this is "early today." in sports the stanley cup finals this morning the los angeles kings find themselves on the brink of their very first nhl title. here's nbc fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. >> good morning. they were the eighth seed in the west. they have knocked off the top three teams in the conference and now the los angeles kings a win away from completing an improbable run with their first stanley cup chb. game three in los angeles, a great one, wane gretzky on hand. second period, dwight king stopped on the first shot, alec martinez to poke in the rebound, the grounders get it done for l.a. the kings up 1-0. skilled players took over. brown found a streaking kopitar, rifled past brodeur.

l.a. up 2-0 after two. the kings haven't been able to get going this postseason is their power play. they can check that off the list. the hero scored on the man advantage and justin williams followed that up with another power-play goal. jonathan quick flawless in the other end, third shot, kings beat the devils 4-0. only team in nhl history to have a three games to none lead in every series of the playoffs. game four of the stanley cup final 8:00 p.m. eastern on the nbc sports network. the thunder have rattled off three straight wins against the mighty spurs. final seconds of the third, kevin durant spun and hit. the buzzer beater gave oklahoma a nine-point lead. spurs hung around got within two. tim duncan had 18 but every time they would get close the thunder would answer. james harden scored 8 points, none bigger than the three with under 30 seconds to play.

here's a story that proves even an old dog can learn new tricks. in canada one dog trainer has taught beagles how to paint using a method called clicker training. and providing them with treats when they do well. she's an able to have them create kay nin masterpieces which she sells to help other beagles. her pride and joy a baseline 8-year-old she says has his own style. one animal in china has you seeing double. a sheep with four horns is grabbing attention. not attractive there along with two normal horns an additional side horns grows out of the sheep's head. experts say it is a rare result of hereditary variation and the
