if two slow lanes, watch for a lot of activity. we'll track that. there's also construction and roadwork in the area. we'll follow that, no other slowing other than in the south bay. >> thank you very much. a somber mood in south san francisco this morning. mourners placing memorial flowers and cards out on the sidewalk where a 15-year-old was killed, shot by police. >> yeah, police say the teen had a gun. but his family and friends are still questioning the use of deadly force. "today in the bay's" christie smith live with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: san mateo county d.a. is investigating this shooting along with south san francisco police. the memorial here is growing. when we were here late yesterday morning, there were only two stuffed animals and a note. so you can see how much it's changed just overnight. this is the scene where 15-year-old derek gaines was shot. the teen pulled a gun out while he was being chased by police. that was tuesday evening near a gas station on westboro, but his

family -- it had to end this way -- tells us that she moved him to south san francisco to protect him from dangers in oakland. police will only say they were trying to stop a pair of teens who were acting -- that derek ran, they say, would not comply and pulled out a weapon. gaines' mom says he was walking home from a nearby mcdonald's and doesn't believe he even had a gun. >> i'm worried about the status quo in south city. that's what i'm worried about. i don't want to see another kid shot or hurt. or labeled. >> reporter: now, police say they did recover a gun, but they didn't say what type or whether it was loaded or not. his death was the first fatal shooting by a police officer in south san francisco in at least 30 years, that's what police are telling us. reporting live in south san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay."

pleasanton police hoping a new sketch will help them identify a woman who was found dead in a trash can. a sketch artist creating this rendition of a woman found on dublin canyon road on may 24th. police also releasing a picture of the earring she was wearing at the time. police were able to get a fingerprint from the woman, but they didn't find a match in the nationwide data base for missing persons. >> we have no way of proving where she came from, where she died, how long she'd been there. those are very difficult things to answer. >> what they do know, the victim was wearing an old navy shirt and pajama bottoms, and if you have any information to solve this crime, you're asked to call the pleasanton police department. well, a toddler recovering in the south bay after falling all the way from a second story window. this happened at this apartment complex near the lawrence expressway in santa clara last night. the child was alert when firefighters arrived. and police say the toddler was then taken to a nearby hospital,

but the extent of the injuries after that fall, not known at this time. it is 4:34 right now. prop 29 supporters are not giving up hope that it will pass. but supporters say with more than 1 million absentee ballots yet to be counted, the decision could go the other way. the campaign said, with less than 1% suffering defeat from victory, we remain vigilant and ever hopeful. new details are emerging from the bryan stow assault case. during day four on wednesday, stow's friend and fellow paramedic described the moments leading up to the beating. he said dodgers fans were jeering at them during the game and stow told him, "i hope they code." a reference to cardiac arrest. that's when the two suspects

allegedly confronted stow and his friends. but nearly all the witnesses were not able to positively i.d. the attackers. legal experts say this could affect how a potential trial plays out. >> the lack of a really positive i.d. isn't really a problem at this stage. but at trial with a higher standard of proof, the district attorney better have some more solid eyewitness evidence. >> if there is enough evidence during the preliminary hearing, norwood and sanchez will stand trial. both men pleaded guilty for the march 27th beating. a jury has been seated for former penn state coach jerry sandusky. the former football coach met a jury of five men and seven women with the opening arguments on monday. four alternates were also selected yesterday. and many of the jurors have connections to penn state university where sandusky was an assistant football coach.

sandusky facing 52 counts of child sexual abuse involving ten alleged victims. he has denied all charges. a swim coach sexually abused by a teacher growing up has been banned from sharing her story with the swim club. she went public with her story last month and talked with our own cheryl hurd about her three years of sexual abuse by a middle school p.e. teacher. she had planned to hold a clinic, but the board of directors deciding this week to cancel that event. she believes the board is just concerned about the country club's ties to that school district. 4:37. another key meeting on plans for -- a final public hearing will be held at the san francisco bay conservation and development commission. officials could also vote on whether to approve permits for construction along the water front. meeting is at 1:00 p.m. at the ferry building. >> looks like might be a nice

and we'll round out the day in the low 80s. we'll check that drive, here's mike. >> this is northbound 101 at montague expressway. now, the earlier traffic break looks like it's happened and cleared. two lanes, still, your two left lanes are blocked as you pass by montague expressway. three vehicles reportedly involved in this accident. the chp says no injuries. that's great news. four cruisers on scene, though, flashing lights, flat bed tow trucks, as well. the earlier big jam up has cleared at the traffic break seems to have cleared over to the shoulder. we're watching this activity. meanwhile, the roadwork, those crews hanging out, no big deal and it should be all cleared by 5:00 in your commute directions. we'll continue to follow this as well as the construction going on here between university and marsh, as well. northbound 101 and southbound, both directions, no slowing past the interchanges.

places like napa and novato. a warmer day than we saw yesterday by about five degrees. an area of low pressure starts to exit the area. for us, we're going to see high pressure moving quickly today. this is going to bring your temperatures up a little bit. also, keeping that fog from forming with a tight pressure gradient today. the winds might be a problem for you. if you have a high-profile vehicle, hang on to your steering wheel. but the good news is, we've got the 80s on the temperature map. more 80s than yesterday. and as we head through tomorrow, temperatures drop off a little bit, more of an onshore flow and then we soar saturday, sunday, into next week. so for today, 80 degrees in livermore. really can't beat that, 80 in san jose, and 72 degrees in fremont. and we're still in that time of year where it's not too mild overnight. temperatures are dropping into the 40s and 50s, so you don't need to use the ac overnight just yet. tuesday into wednesday, talking about lows in the 60s. you want to keep that in mind.

it'll be a warm week as we head into next week. nice and mild to finish off the weekend and back to you guys for now. it's 4:50 right now. more than just a college degree, a team of graduating seniors carrying on a professor's legacy. the engineering students showed off their fuel cell design at a showcase wednesday night. it would replace large toxic batteries used to store solar and wind energy. the students are carrying on the work of associate professor dan strickland. he died in a car crash on highway 280 back in september. last night the students were overcome with emotion as they shared their work. >> with the support that we've been given by family, friends, and the university, mr. and mrs. strickland.

the traffic tradition, yeah, we have 101 we're looking at. this is because of the sig alert. no injuries reported, be uh three vehicles involved, and we have two lanes blocked at montague expressway. one of the cars went off at the roadway, one was in the center divide, there was a traffic break, as well. tow trucks on scene and no major progress reported, we hold steady with that report until they give us an update. 680 north of 580, we do have construction there and some slowing because of those crews, but no major problems because of the light volume of traffic. 580, that shows you a better travel time and speeds at the limit. live look out there across the bay, a smooth easy drive, lights visible across the bay, little bit of glow, moisture in the air, no problems throughout the north bay, back to you. >> thank you very much. >> as we get ready to go head-to-head on the court. we've got sneakers to talk about. the question is, how far would you go for these shoes? >> some fans in new york have the answer.
