news an -- a graduation party turned deadly. asking for the public's help to try to find a man who punched last month. more fires today around the bay area. because of the unusually windy weather. nbc bay area news starts now. good evening. i'm diane dwyer. this is graduation weekend for many high schools around the bay

area. but in antioch the celebration turned violent. >> reporter: police say the shooting happened at about 2:40 this morning just as a high school graduation party was winding down. one girl who said she was the host of the party said two people she didn't recognize walked up to the house and were turned away. witnesses say the two men laughed and within minutes attempted to rob people at the party. a 21-year-old man died from a gun shot wound to the back. another man was shot in the leg and is recovering. today val entineo's family gather. his mother told us her son was a good person who was dedicated to his family.

>> i don't know who could do that to my son. he was such a nice kid. he's always helping people and protecting girls and protecting his friends. he's going to be missed, my baby. >> reporter: neighbors say in the last two years there has been a marked increase in the number of robberies on the streets. one neighbor told us she won't walk to the store in the day let alone the night. witnesses say they have given detailed descriptions of the suspects w suspects. if you have any information on the suspects or what happened last night at the high school graduation party you are asked to call police.

>> thank you. friends and family of a man who was punched and sent into a coma are mourning his death tonight. you are looking at facebook pages dedicated to steven martin. police say he was punched during an argument between his group of friends and another group. martin and several friends ran the race. the men in the other group were wearing 49ers jerseys. when martin fell he hit his head and lost consciousness. last night his family took him off life support and this morning police confirmed he died. now those close to martin want to find the man who attacked him. they are urging anyone who has pictures or videos that show the men at sharon meadow to come forward in hopes of identifying the attacker. we are also told there was also

a woman in a giants t shirt and black and orange tutu. we will have more on the story tonight at 11:00, as well. we have updates tonight that police made arrests in two shootings in the bay area. the first one involved a shooting death of a 57-year-old man at a park last weekend. police in southern california say they arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with that shooting. the suspect's name is gregory joseph bethany jr. two other people were hurt in that shooting, as well. bethany is expected to be transferred to the jail where police say he will face charges of murder and attempted murder. the second case involved a shooting that killed a 25-year-old man outside a kareoke bar yesterday. the suspects 18-year-olds jimmy

and andy hoe and 19-year-old johnny lee are all from union city. investigators say they believe the shooting was gang related. there is a fire warning for parts of the bay area tonight because of all the wind. the warning is in effect until 11:00 tomorrow morning for parts of the north and east bays. firefighters did battle several small wind driven fires today. this one started in a land fill on the san jose border just after 2:00 this afternoon. it sent out smoke visible from interstate 880. five acres of mulch, trash and grass burned. buildings were never threatened but some machinery was. investigators are not yet sure how it started. wind also played a significant role in fanning another fire. this one at highway 87. the fire started around 1:30

this afternoon. firefighters say gusty winds kept them from getting control of the flames for about two hours. several acres of grass burned. no structures were threatened and the cause of that fire is also under investigation. another fire caused serious traffic problems in the oakland hills last night but tonight interstate 580 and highway 13 are back open. it started when a woman crashed into a power pole knocking out power to nearly 7,000 homes. well, the downed power lines sparked a two-acre fire that forced dozens of people to evacuate. crews had to strut down a portion of 580 and 13 last night for about an hour. >> once we were ready to begin the work and the traffic conditions were right working in conjunction with caltranthe work took just over a half an hour. it involved restringing the

distribution lines on utility poles. >> for many the fire was an uncomfortable reminder of the 1991 oakland hills fire. we want to check in on the weather and this wind. >> the wind is one factor in all of this fire activity that has been increasing. another is the heat. hour temperatures are somewhere about 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year. a red flag warning is in effect through tomorrow morning until 11:00 really for the east hills and north bay mountains. san jose saw winds up to 22 miles per hour. along with the winds the warm temperatures are going to continue to remain a factor in this heat and fire damage and the temperatures today considerably high for this time of year and not to mention we are actually headed to see 90s

in our future tomorrow and for the first half of the upcoming week. had the juicy details coming up. weather is not believed to have played a role in yet another fire that destroyed a small office this morning. reports of flames came in at about 8:00 this morning at the psychic business called crystal readings on antonio road. dozens of firefighters responded but a half hour later the building was largely gutted. >> there are no injuries. the fire was primarily contained to the one uniont. >> the second unit was a dentist office. the cause of the fire is under investigation. in the east bay it was a close call for some golfers enjoying the day on the course. take a look at these pictures. a small single engine plane made an emergency landing at the practice range this morning.

the course is located right next to the buchanan field airport. officials say the plane lost power shortly after taking off and the pilot was attempting to blied back to the run way. no one was injured. federal investigators are reviewing the incident. they rolled the plane back to the airport. next on nbc bay area news we sit down with general coloin powell. also the bid to have lunch with warren buffet. and the bay area organization helping children jump the achievement gap one equation at a time.

gun fire and shelling in the capitol city of damascus. nbc has more. >> reporter: after initially coming under attack and being denied entry u.n. observers finally managed to enter the village on friday. observers toured the village and spoke to eyewitnesss including one man who said seven children of his extended family was killed and the home was burned. amateur video suggests that the killing rampage was carried out by progovernment militias. if you thought the international con demnation would deter that has not been the case. on friday evening the military continued the shelling.

on saturday morning eyewitnesss say more than 15 people were killed in the syria military shelling of that particular town. more interesting is for the first time in a long time the capitol eyewitnesss reported the sounds of explosions an indication that the violence which has been outside the capitol has reached the city center and the strong base of support. nbc news, cairo. former secretary of state, colin powell is in the bay area. he is a consultant for a firm. this week's visit was a little bit different. some say general powell is trying to clear the air. he sat down with raj hathai in our latest installment of the interview. >> reporter: old wounds especially for a military man

stop. and some of those folks wrote books later saying we knew. maybe you knew and you didn't tell me. you didn't tell the president. you didn't tell general franks and the joint chiefs of staff. we all went into this conflict with the belief because we didn't have hard evidence that it was a good case, that there were weapons of mass destruction on the ground in iraq. to me it turned what seemed like a terrific presentation in about three or four months to a failure. >> you say the president never once had you in a room and never asked you should you go forward. >> he didn't ask any of us. >> is this book a way to cleanse your reputation? >> it doesn't need cleansing. >> is it a way to digest your part in history in this?

bit. we have gust highs. towards gill roy winds down to about 8 miles per hour. we are seeing our winds calm down. good news with the high fire danger in place. tomorrow morning our winds the strongest along the coast. our winds calm throughout the day so not talking about the increased fire danger. with 90s in place and our humidity in the single digits you want to take it easy if you are a smoker make sure those butts are out because we do not need more fires across the bay area. that is one of the largest reasons we have fires. this is what we are looking at for high pressure. it is usually positioned across southern california this time of year. you have that warm air reaching all the way into washington and portland and places like that. that air right in place across the bay area. 80s tomorrow and 90s in some of the interior valleys.

to graduate. >> reporter: at least a year from graduation partly because he changed his major and having a hard time getting the classes he needs. >> everyone is fighting over the classes. it's been tough getting a seat in class. >> reporter: among one of 1,500 students who will take summer school classes at san jose state. it might be easier for students to get their classes during the summer they will also have to pay about twice as much at san jose state. >> during the summer students pay the full cost of their education. during the school year they pay half because taxpayers pick up the other half. because the state doesn't support our summer session we have to charge our students for the full cost. >> reporter: students will pay about the same as they are used to during the regular school year. >> we can actually open a pretty

good program but we can't meet all of the demand. we know that there will be more demand than we can probably meet. >> reporter: the college saved money in part by having larger classes in order to try to offer the same number of courses that they did last summer. >> they are our highest proert but then there are students who are scrambling around looking to find the units they need. >> reporter: freshman is taking a gamble and taking the summer off hoping the squeeze will ease in the fall. >> i might have to be another year. that would be like really frustrating. still ahead locusts have invaded a small town near sacramento. we'll show you what is going on there and the damage they are causing. s

a small town near sacramento invaded by hungry locusts, millions of them. >> reporter: the backyard of one rural home swarming with locusts. residents say they first appear as tiny green insects just nine days ago. >> they are walking right down the sidewalk, they hit the house and get screwed up. they go around the house until they figure out they have to move around. >> reporter: this is what the pepper crop used to look like. now the back commercial garden is completely wiped out. >> we don't know what to do. we don't know how to stop it. it's i guess we're just breeding them now. >> reporter: they are feasting on rose bushes, grass and everything else. across the street another home is invaded. the hoppers are targeting everything but tomatoes in this garden. >> larger as far as the size of

the swarm. >> reporter: the chickens are feasting but there are thousands up on thousands of these insects. the swarm appears to be in a small area but brian is worries that vineyards and dairy ranches could be the next target. >> that was tom dehane reporting. we are going to check in with anthony slaughter. no locusts around here. >> that was pretty intense. you could see the locusts on the camera while he was going through. that was crazy. temperatures right now still very comfortable if you are trying to make plans to head out for a late stroll around town. 70 in san jose. that red flag warning will continue tomorrow and into the north bay mountains where the highest danger will be until 11:00 tomorrow. if you have plans to head out do all you can to limit the fire danger. of course with high temperatures tomorrow in the 90s and even 80s

across the east and south bay looks like a moderate air quality forecast. if you are one of those folks that do suffer from increased air instability definitely want to make sure that you take it easy. this is livermore humidity at 9 to 14%. that is the same as the desert. phoenix looking at humidity levels around there. that is one reason why we have the fire danger in place. also the winds up to about 30 miles per hour. those will subside after tomorrow especially. it does look like the hot air will be in place tomorrow afternoon. again with high pressure positioned so far north that typically right along the equator it is going to be pushed into the bay area as we head through the day tomorrow. a few records possible towards hayward and free mont. a few records with 80s. for tomorrow morning 56 in

edda appreciates each and every step. >> i discovered on 14th avenue that there was a retaining wall and there are stairs i couldn't get over and then more stairs. i was going crazy. >> reporter: she poured her love of stair ways into the pages of a book. these days she is known as the queen of stair way walks. >> you can go up stairs that are very uncomfortable and others you fly up. >> reporter: the book pointed out everything from the ornate steps of 16th avenue and stairs that were hardly stairs at all. >> somebody decided it was too hard to go up the hill so they made their own stair way. >> reporter: she believes stair ways should be save ored. after serving as a guide for stair climbers everywhere she is getting notice just up the

stairs of city hall. supervisors are now taking steps to honor her. >> her book is just incredibly useful and has helped a lot of people explore the city. so we thought it would be appropriate to name one of our beautiful stair ways after her. >> reporter: soon the saturn street steps will be joined by edda's stare way. the honor doesn't mean the 88-year-old walker is hanging up her walking shoes because there are still places to explore and the places worth climbing to. >> love that. thousands of girl scouts braved the heat on the east coast today to celebrate the organization's 100th anniversary. >> five, four, three, two, one. >> some 200,000 girl scouts from every state in the country gathered at the national mall in

washington d.c. for what they called the girl scouts rock the mall event. the organization was hoping to set a guinness world record. look at that. the crowd also had to deal with high temperatures and high humidity thus the water there. officials say at least 50 people were taken to the hospital for heat related illnesses but they did cool off. thanks for watching this special edition of nbc bay area news. we have access hollywood coming up next. look who we got here.
