5:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. a big event in the bay area has businesses seeing green thanks to the golf green. the u.s. open is is expected to pump $100 million into the local economy. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live near san francisco's olympic club on what the surrounding community and the crowds can expect. damian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. everybody is excited here in daly city and surrounding areas. tiger woods has the first tee time at 7:00, of course that's the practice round. he'll play with casey martin who also made golf history with his disability. everyone is excited around the olympic club. getting here, however, is going to be a challenge. police are warning about gridlock on john daly boulevard. 45,000 people are expected on the boulevard each of the next seven days. including skyline boulevard, in all the tournament is expected to bring in $100 million to the

local economy. for the locals, we'll take the gridlock, especially if it means golfers and fans might stop by. >> coming into town is going to be great for daly city. we upped staff because we plan on crazy schedules. >> reporter: if you are coming to the tournament, organizers encourage you to park at candlestick park and take the free shut tool the tournament. if you are coming via b.a.r.t., the colma b.a.r.t. station will have free shuttle service. i was at the 2010 u.s. open at pebble beach. last year rory mcelroy won so it's a couple of years since the americans took the top spot. live outside the olympic club,

the deadline is today. christie smith is live in oakland with what potential applicants need to know. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. as you said the first thing they need to know is today is the application deadline to become a police officer trainee and this is a big step forward for the oakland police department. it has struggled in recent years to keep its numbers up. according to one estimate, right now oakland only has about 650 police officers on their force because of budget cuts. they had to reduce staff and because of attrition, that's down from 840 officers just four years ago. in march nearly 1,000 hopefuls lined up for the chance to become police officers and there were only about 50 spots available. there is still a long way to go. the accident now looking at two upcoming police academies, i checked online and for those who meet the deadline and requirements, the written exam at the end of this month,

officer trainees are paid about $4900 a month in the academy. there are a number of minimum qualifications, you must have a high school diploma or g.e.d., be 21 at the time of graduating, have a valid california i.d., no felony convictions or convictions that would prevent you from carrying a gun, just naming a few. that expected to get started some time this summer. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:05. shot in the throat while out for a drive. this morning a woman is lucky to be alive after a burst of violence. the 57-year-old woman says she heard a loud popping sound and realized that her throat was bleeding sunday morning. the bullet passed through the rear passenger door and the headrest before hitting her. she managed to drive herself to the hospital where she's now in

stable condition. she didn't see other cars at the time. there is no reason to believe the woman was targeted. >> three union city men face murder charges in current weather conditions a deadly shooting at a south bay night spot. 18-year-old jimmy and andy ho and 19-year-old johnny lai were booked over the weekend. police say they were involved in a shooting at a bar. a 25-year-old man was shot to death during an argument. investigators believe the attack was gang related. this was san jose's 18th homicide of the year. >> details on a home invasion that left four dead. police believe the alleged gun man was one of those killed. a husband and wife along with a guest were found shot to death. another person visiting is in critical condition. a neighbor who heard the commotion confronted the suspect. >> there was gun fire exchanged and the suspect is now deceased.

>> there were no signs of forced entry into the home which leads them to believe the residents likely knew their killer. >> new video in to our newsroom of a woman being rescued from a sinking car. this is video shot by a passerby. you can make out the woman trying to climb out of the window when the car started to sink. several jumped in the water to help. they were able to get that woman out of the car with barely a scratch. the sheriff's office is investigating. it's not clear how the woman's car ended up in the water. look at it go down so quickly. she managed to make it out alive. >> high temperatures are prompting high alerts about fire danger here in the bay area. add to that the wind and it's shaping up to be an early fire season. we've seen several fires break out since friday including this

one near highway 87 and kertner avenue. >> firefighters say they have not seen anything like this in the past five years. >> our fire season really from 2011 really extended well into 2012. other than a respite in march and april we've pretty much been watching the weather and seeing a rot of the fire season conditions throughout the wintertime. >> of course, typically the busiest season in the bay area does not come until late summer and early fall. >> but now this week we're going to get hit hard. it's going to be hot. >> it's going to feel like one of the hottest days in the summer like we see in august or september. i put the triple digits on the map. that's unusual here. we have the cooling off the pacific, the marine layer so customed to this month but not seeing that.

we have not had that, it's been as clear as a bell, same thing, 58 in livermore, at 57 in san mateo. temperatures are going to climb up to 82 by noon. this is your noon reading in palo alto. livermore today 97 degrees. 101 in fairfield. 100 in gilroy. so as you can imagine we're getting a very rapid fire season. it's happened much earlier. the first official day of sum ser the 20th, so you want to keep that in mind. you want to practice fire safety f. you have a barbecue, have a camp ground, monitor your fire and make sure it's put out before you leave it. also a good idea to check fluids in your car. >> and in yourself as well. you have to wait on the road you get uncomfortable. no waiting here now. the construction crew has

cleared. north of rudier to highway 24, no more slowing right around that interchange. great start for the walnut creek drive. south to san ramon and 580 shows a 15 minute drive. heading over to the maze, construction on 880 looks like it's cleared from downtown. the area i circled westbound 80 to 580 there was a connector issue, sound likes the sign is confusing. traffic is flowing fight away from the bridge, you do have a little more construction. watch for slowing, a couple of lanes affected. a live look shows you oakland to the south of that map, a nice flow south with the headlights all the way to the san mateo bridge. there is survey work going on.

today. throughout the afternoon these winds are rather calm. for us that means you need to turn on the fan or find some way to seek the shade. by noon temperatures exceeding, 80s and 90s today. i'm talking about the upper 90s, even triple digits in the warmest city of the bay. at the coast temperatures in the 80s, upper 70s. take a look at this. oakland, 86 degrees for you. typically it's cooler than fremont. won't be the case. uniform conditions. throughout the rest of the week, temperatures drop off, 90 degrees by tuesday, 81 wednesday. that's weather. a look at your drive with mike. >> out to the roadways, 780 off of interstate 80. the opposite direction, there is activity just reported no. major

5:31. today, closure for a heartbroken mother who lost her husband and two sons in a gang shooting. edwin ramos will be sentenced for killing anthony and his sons michael and matthew. they were driving home from a family gathering when prosecutors say ramos mistook one of them for a rival gang member and opened fire from another car. one son survived. >> funeral services will be held for a south bay teen killed while visiting his grandmother in oregon. nick had finished his sophomore year in mountain view. last monday police say his uncle used a hunting rifle to shoot the teenager and his grandmother who also died. police say the 41-year-old man confessed to the shooting. no word yet on his motive. >> today is the last day to get your application in for the

welcome back everyone. taking a live look outside. a gorgeous morning across the bay area. clear skies, nice start no matter where you are. temperatures rising. we'll check the forecast with christina. 5:41. >> an out-of-control fire in colorado is still burning this morning. about 8,000 acres are now on fire, about 25 miles northwest of ft. collins. emergency workers sent out 800 notices to residents warning they may have to evacuate.

ten buildings are damaged but no injuries have been reported. so far no word on the cause. >> also, a large wild fire in new mexico has already burned more than 26,000 acres. hundreds of people are forced from their homes as firefighters try to get a handle on the flames. 36 buildings and 40 square miles are burned in the lincoln national forest. timber, dry grass and steep slopes make it hard to fight the fire. >> now to a developing story, cabinet member facing felony charges. police near l.a. found commerce secretary john bryson alone and unconscious after allegedly hitting two cars in separate accidents. tracie potts live on capitol hill this morning on the trouble that he's facing now. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. here's how the l.a. sheriff's department says it went down. apparently bryson, after being in town for a business speech at his daughter's alma mater was

driving saturday just after 5:00, hit a car that was standing still waiting for a train, there were three people in the car, no major injuries. witnesses say he got out and they talked about exchanging information but then he got back in his car, he seemed confused, got back in his car and hit the car again as he backed out to get around it and keep going. that car then followed him another two miles, calling 911, while they were following him. turns out he hit another car the sheriff's office said with a man and woman again, minor injuries, minor damage to the car but he was unconscious at the wheel when they found him. they took him to the hospital, he is facing a citation for felony hit and run. significant here, early in the investigation officers are saying the sheriff's office is saying there was no indication that drugs and alcohol were involved. >> has the obama administration come out to say anything? >> reporter: we're waiting this morning to see whether the commerce department or perhaps

the white house or the president directly will have comment. surely they have to have some sort of comment. >> tracie potts, thanks for the latest. >> it is 5:44 now. a manhunt is under way in alabama after a shooting at an off-campus party killed two former auburn football players. a fight broke out at an apartment clubhouse saturday. 22-year-old desmomte leonard began shooting, killing three and wounding three others. among the wounded current player eric mack whose injuries are not life threatening. police have not revealed the motive for the shooting but reports say the fight was over a woman. >> they are victims of a brutal shooting. >> leonard fled the scene in the white chevrolet where he abandoned near montgomery. investigators are focussing the

search in the montgomery area. >> two american students walked out after new zealand wilderness after a snowstorm trapped them. they survived by rationing trail mix and warming themselves in hot springs. both men are students at the university of wisconsin, studying abroad for a semester. they had planned to hike and camp for a few days but heavy rains and snow prevented them from being able to cross a river and return. >> new this morning, opening statements get under way in the sex abuse trial of former penn state coach jerry sandusky. chris palone is live with a preview for us. >> reporter: good morning, laura. jerry sandusky arrived at the court house in bellefonte, pennsylvania about 25 minutes ago. he and his attorneys are expected to meet with the judge to take care of some housekeeping before the trial gets under way. sandusky is charged with sex abuse. prosecutors are expected to call eight alleged victims to the

stand to testify against him. the first one expected to go up today after opening statements is being called victim number 4, he's expected to testify today that he was molested by jerry sandusky more than 50 times, of course sandusky is charged with molesting ten young men over a period of about 15 years. the defense's strategy looks like it's going to be to discredit the witnesses claiming that they are looking to file civil lawsuits against sandusky to get money from him but right now it looks like there are at least eight witnees lined up to testify against him. >> there is strength in numbers. these other eight who are going to say the same thing over and over, the same pattern of grooming and what they claim happened to them, will tend to corroborate all of the others. >> reporter: and the judge has declined to sequester jurors in the trial meaning they will be free to go home at the end of each day. the trial could last several

and we have kind of a stagnant air mass so you want to keep that in mind. we had a cool breeze. you can open up the windows but it's not going to do much for you. hot inland tomorrow. we're going to drop off temperatures significantly. you want to hit the beach, well t warmest day of the week to do so. 74 degrees, northwest about 5 to 10 miles per hour. like i said, not a lot of wind. you want to make sure you put on sun screen if you're headed out. the high uv index and takes about 15 minutes to burn. santa cruz today, the warmest beach city really comfortable conditions but make sure you're aware, 17 will be packed though it's a work day for some. 92 in san jose, 97 in livermore. 101 degrees in fairfield. that means you need to drink lots of water. the good news is we're going to drop off by 5 to 10 degrees as of tomorrow. another 10 degrees by wednesday

getting more of that natural fog in the morning. by thursday, sunshine returns and the climb begins again as we head to father's day weekend. 90 degrees. speaking of our favorite dad who does traffic, here he is. >> that's the best qualifier ever. i'm the favorite dad that does traffic on nbc bay area. don't you forget it. looking to the peninsula moving nicely. my two favorite major interstates north-south in the area. 280 though there is a report of a tire, debris or a tire in the third lane so chp might have to do a rolling traffic break. that's the only thing for the peninsula. smooth drive across the bridge, the dumbarton and san mateo bridge. the earlier debris, oakland, oak street, that has been cleared. westbound, the earlier slowdown around emeryville has cleared, heading to the bay bridge, now the volume starts to build. a live look and show you what it's like at the toll plaza.
