jacket. temperatures in the 90s inland t the 80s bay side and the 70s even right at the coast. your full forecast in moments. >> we have your typical slow pattern for the tri-valley but a new accident in concord may tie up major roadways. we'll give you the latest on that situation. >> here is a live look at the current conditions in san francisco on this monday, june 11th, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. it's straight up 6:00. i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning, 16 people left homeless by an apartment fire. it happened near port chicago highway and willow pass road. three apartments badly damaged. it started by an unattended barbecue. >> we have new video to show you this morning that passerbys raced to the aid of a woman in a

sinking car. look at this cell phone video last night along the oakland estuary. the woman is trying to climb out of the car window. several people jumped in to help. they were able to get the woman out with barely a scratch. it's not clear how the woman's car ended up in the water. >> what a rescue there. the oakland police department looking for a few good men and women is accepting applications to beef up its force but you have to hurry. christie smith is live in oakland with what is behind this latest hiring drive. >> reporter: good morning. today is the deadline if you want to submit an application to become a police officer trainee. this is a big step forward for the city of oakland and the police department which has struggled to keep its numbers up. one estimate is the oakland police department has about 650 officers, because of budget cuts they had to reduce staffing and

many retired so the number is down from 840 just four years ago. in march 1,000 lined up. there were 50 spots available. there is still a long way to go. the department looking at two police academies. i checked and each academy has close to 50 people. for those who meet the deed line and the requirements the written exam will be the end of the m. train yees are paid $4900 a month. there are a number of minimum qualifications, a high school diploma or ged, be at least 21 at the time of graduating, have a valid california driver's license, no felony convictions or convictions that would prevent you from carrying a gun. just naming a few of the requirements. a full academy is expected to start at the end of this summer. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the

bay." >> gun fire on an interstate. a woman is lucky to be alive. she was driving on i-80 early so realized realized she had be shot in the throat. police say she managed to drive herself to the hospital where she is in stable condition. the woman says she did not see other cars on the road at the time. officers say there is no reason to believe the woman was targeted. >> we're learning more about a home invasion that left four dead. the gunman was apparently one of the four killed. they also say the saturday night attack does not appear random. a husband, wife and their guest died, another visitor is in critical condition. a neighbor who heard the commotion confronted the suspect. >> gun fire exchanged between the two and the suspect is now deceased. >> police say there were no signs of forced entry into the home. >> opening statements just got

under way in the jerry sandusky trial. the former penn state football skoch accused of sexually abusing ten boys over 15 years. sandusky denies the allegations. we could get new detail this is morning. the prosecution and the defense have been under a gag order for months now. many of the alleged victims are expected to take the stand for the prosecution, once testimony begins. we'll have a live report from the courthouse coming up at 6:45. >> three men face murder charges in connection with a shooting in a night spot. 18-year-old jimmy and andy ho along with johnny lai were booked over the weekend. the three were involved in a shooting at a karaoke bar. a 25-year-old man was shot to death. investigators believe the attack was gang related. it was san jose's 18th homicide of the year. >> the fresh crop of apple products will make their debut.

tim cook will kick off the annual software developer's conference. couple will release a new operating system for the iphone, ipad and ipod touch. last year the big announcement was a virtual assistance for the iphone. scott mcgrew will fill you in. plus a live report from the center at 6:15. >> another big event has businesses seeing green thanks to golf green. the u.s. open is expected to pump $100 million into the local economy. what the crowds can expect, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. big crowds, they are closing down sky line dfld. and john daly boulevard. this is as far as you can get.

tiger woods he is off in unarea an hour followed by bubba watson. the open means big bucks for the local economy. businesses hope the pros and their fans stop by for a bite on their way out of or into the aurnment and there might be gridlock. police are warning there might be up to 45,000 people each day of the tournament. they are encouraging people to park at candlestick park and take a free shuttle to the club. no matter how you get here, local leaders know it will be a boost for the shops around town. >> historically what the u.s. open has shown is that it's able to generate north of $160 million. in montgomery county they were able to do that as well as

are going to have to do it the old fashioned way when they recess. we'll find out a lot more information. >> a member of president obama's cabinet is facing charges for three crashes in southern california over the weekend. investigators say commerce secretary john bryson allegedly hit a car in the city of san gabriel rel saturday afternoon, then hit it again leaving the scene. police say he was involved in a third crash five minutes later in rosemead. he was found unconscious at the second scene before admitting him to the hospital. we got word from the l.a. county sheriff no alcohol or drugs came up in bryson's system during a test. he has been cited for felony hit and run. >> that's not the only problem president obama is facing. his campaign is in damage control after allegations the white house leagued classified information for political purposes. tracie potts joins us live with

the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's one of a couple of big issues that has the campaign and both the administration in damage control, that classified information national security information president obama denies that any one would have leaked that for political purposes. john mccain says it had to have come from inside the administration based on the nature of the info and they want to know who leaked it and why. general holder appointed two u.s. attorneys to look into it. republicans want independent counsel as they put zero credibility on capitol hill. the other issue the president dealing with the fallout of saying that the private sector is doing fine, mitt romney says it showed that he is out of touch with what's going on with the economy and he has two new ads out to prove that. >> thank you for the latest, tracie. >> the u.s. open starts today, looking up to see the

>> good morning. this is about 6:31. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning an overnight fire displaces 16 people in bay point. it happened near port chicago highway and willow pass road. it started around midnight and we're told it was started by a barbecue. three to four apartments were damaged. >> new video in, the woman being rescued by strangers as her car sinks into the oakland estuary. this is cell phone video shot by a passerby. you can see the woman trying to climb out of her car window when the car starts to go under. several people on the bank jump in and help get her to shore with barely a scratch. it's not clear how the car ended up in the water. >> tee time for tiger. a half hour away, the golf pros are in town for this week's u.s. open. damian trujillo is live in daly city gearing up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

they are closing down the roads, skyline boulevard is closed here at john daily boulevard so if you have no which is up here near the olympic club, you may as well stay at home or take a shuttle. but yes, tiger woods is a headliner, he tees off in a half hour followed by bubba watson and in the cast of professionals taking the course here at the olympic club. and this area is really cashing in, excited about the tournaments locally. hundreds of millions of dollars are expected to pour into the local economy. police are warning about gridlock here in daly city and in surrounding areas. 45,000 people are expected to drive down john daly boulevard each day and that might be fine with the locals.

for each. if you applied before there is a 30-day waiting period before you reapply. nearly 1,000 lined up for a chance at 50 spots. so here are a couple of things. you should have a high school sip plo ma. you should be at least 21 years old, have a valid california's driver's license and no felony convictions or others that would prevent you from carrying a gun. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:35. closure for a heart broken mother who lost her husband and two sons 18 gang shooting. edwin ramos will be sentenced today for killing 48-year-old anthony and his sons. they were driving home from a family gathering when ramos mistook one of them for a rival gang member and opened fire.

one son survived. >> funeral services for a south bay teen killed while visiting his grandmother. 16-year-old nick hatd just finished his sophomore year in mountain view. his uncle used a hunting rifle to shoot the teenager and his grond mother who also died. it happened near portland. the 41-year-old man confessed to the shooting. no word yet on his motive. >> we're talking about how the temperatures are going to creep up not only today but all week. >> we're going to cool off a touch toward the midsection to climb back up for the weekend. so not much heat relief. san francisco, look like you can see for smiles. what i did want to point out. a little bit of a shake.

that was taken today. sun is up, warming things up. that's for sure. could be pretty toasty inland. >> once an olympic hopeful, a uc-berkeley student has a chance to be part of the games through service. kylen grew up as a gymnast, dreaming of competing in the olympic games. an injury ended that dream but he didn't give up. he got involved in public service and created two nonprofit organizations. now the 19-year-old has been chosen by coca-cola to be part of the olympic torch relay. >> it's just a matter of finding your passion and combine with giving to others, that's kind of what i strive for and hope to do as i get older as well. >> he is double majoring hoping to stay in the bay area and open a socially minded business. we are 45 days from the start of the summer olympics and of course you can catch the action here on nbc bay area.

morning. describes live in bellefonte, pennsylvania with the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we have been informed by the court here that the trial has indeed begun. jerry sandusky, the former assistant coach at penn state is charged with 52 counts of child molestation. prosecutors are expected to bring eight alleged victims to the stand to testify, perhaps as early as today. that will begin. sandusky is accused of molesting ten children over the period of 15 years. prosecutors expect to go with some of their strongest evidence in one victim called victim number 4, he is expected to testify perhaps as early as today that sandusky molested him more than 50 times and tried to buy his silence with gifts. the defense for its part has been saying since december that they are looking into the backgrounds of these former

children who are going to testify against sandusky looking into a possible motive of obtaining money from civil suits. they are going to try to paint these alleged victims as conspirat conspirators. it's the latest here. the juniors are not sequestered. the trial is expected to last at least three weeks. $thank you, chris, for the latest. >> new this morning overseas in japan there are mounting calls to prosecute the top brass behind a stricken nuclear power plant. thousands of criminal complaints have been filed against company leaders who run the fukushima daiichi plant. they blame several dozen executives following the earthquake. complaint says leaders failed to prepare in an area known for natural disasters. >> also new we're learning it was a seizure that led to car

crashes involving the secretary of commerce on saturday. this is according to the commerce department. police say john bryson slammed his car into a buick around 5:00 p.m. saturday, then hit the car again when he left the scene. a third crash took place five minutes later. paramedics found bryson unconscious before admitting him to the hospital. we got word that alcohol was not found in his system and he has been cited for a felony hit and run. >> two american students walked out of a new zealand forest. >> they survived rationing trail mix and warming themselves in hot springs. both are students at the university of wisconsin studying abroad. they planned to hike and camp for a few days but heavy rains and snow prevented them from being able to cross a river and return. >> they are lucky to have survived. if you don't like the heat

markets. >> scott mcgrew joins us. >> the dow industrials up better than 50 points t nasdaq up 6 this after last week's huge spike. good news on the markets as the spanish banks got a bailout. other news, the "wall street journal" asking hard questions about bob, the head of the nasdaq. he got on a plane, headed back east after with unavailable as facebook's ipo fell apart due to problems on the nasdaq. the paper this morning said he didn't know about any of this because on his flight the united airlines flight didn't have wi-fi. >> we're also looking at the developers conference out of apple and the worldwide developers conference in san francisco. lots of things expected including improvements to the operating system for iphone and ipad. we'll have lots of updates throughout the day.

several people on the bank jumped in to help her. incredibly they were able to get her out with barely a scratch. the sheriff's office is investigating. it's not clear how the woman's car ended up in the water. >> an overnight fire left 16 people in bay point without a place to live. it happened near willow pass road. we're told it was started by a barbecue. it burned three to four apartments. >> a woman is recuperating after she says she was shot in the throat on i-80. she told police she heard a loud popping sound and then realized she was bleeding. she drove herself to the hospital where she is in table condition. she did not see other cars at the time of the shooting. this is no reason to believe that the woman is targeted.

they were driving home when prosecutors say ramos mistook one of them for a rival gang member and opened fire from another car. one son survived, he and his mother are now in the witness protection program. >> san francisco police asking for help finding people involved in what is now a deadly fight in golden gate park. 30-year-old steven martin from santa clara died over the weekend. he was on life sup following an assault, following bay to breakers on may 20th. police say martin and his group got into an argument with another group in the sharon meadows area. martin and his friends were dressed as troll dolls, the others 49er jerseys. one had an orange tutu. we're telling you this because if you think you saw anything related to it call san francisco police. >> the oakland police department

is hiring and the deadline for applications is today. christie smith is live in oakland with what you need to know to apply. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the entire hiring process takes about six to nine months and applications are available online or you can go downtown to city hall and pick one up. they are due today. it's the first step in becoming an oakland police officer trainee. i checked online and oakland typically has 40-plus people per academy and they plan two. one estimate is that oakland has about 650 police officers and that's down from 840 in 2008. so they are a long way to go to get the numbers back up. some money was set aside to fund these new officers. no felony convictions, that first academy is expected to start sometime in august. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:57.
