thank you for joining us. the time now is almost 6:01. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. bay area serving as a backdrop for one of golf's greatest tournaments, the u.s. open starts thursday but this is plenty to see every day. marla tellez is live at candlestick park with what fans need to know before you even head out. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. get ready to take notes, there are quite a few things you need to know if you head out to the olympic club. we're at candle stick park, one of two meeting spots where you can hop on a shuttle bus, take you directly to the gulf course. you can see the lot is filling up at gate 5. enter gate 5, shuttle service is up der way. 125 buses running around the clock. it's about a 30-minute trip out to the greens. be prepared to go through a metal detection screening. they are strict about what you can and cannot bring.

no electronics, for instance, this means no cell phones, no cell phones allowed this week but free public phones are free to use. and no bags larger than eight inches. that surprised one of the volunteers. she was up set because she cannot bring her furs in. other than candlestick park if you hop on b.a.r.t., the pittsburg bay side line or the richmond/millbrae train, they will take that to the komenmation. all of this information is a lot to process now. you can find this out on our website including what you can and cannot bring out. live at candlestick park, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> great job breaking it all

what that means is there will be temporary lane closures that could affect you while work goes on. as an alternate take sierra road or mckee rod. this is for the vta, berryessa extension projecti. construction i'm told will be done by 2016, then the project is turned back over to b.a.r.t. estimates are that trains could be rolling by 2017. construction is going on pretty much for the next ten days all hours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. christie smith, today. >> trains cunning on time after a fatal accident. the station was closed after a man stepped in front of a train.

a late night trains were delayed more than two hours while crews worked on the scene. no word on the man's identity. >> san francisco police make an unusual discovery inside a north beach apartment. they found what appeared to be an explosive device. they also found a bullet hole in the wall. the tenant's friend called saying a woman was in psychiatric distress, she was taken to the hospital for observation. >> san francisco police looking for pictures, video or someone with a good memory to help find a person whose punch led to a man's death. this is one of the final pictures of stephan martin, he's on the right wearing a green wig. minutes after this picture was taken, somebody pun wered him. he fell very hard hitting his

head. he sadly never regained consciousness. police think the man and the woman could know martin's attacker. martin's family took him off life support. friends created a facebook page asking for more photos to be turned over. >> we can't get enough photographs. err on the side of caution if you think you have a picture that may be at all helpful. send it along, video also. >> we can tell you martin owned a consulting business in san jose. the attack happened following a dispute over a cell phone. >> the faa is investigating a block of ice that fell from the sky damaging a home. it was a size of a basketball and hit the right side of the house on wichita drive on sunday night. that's a large hole you see. a neighbor heard the crash and

outside. alcatraz island. they were recently, don't know if you could say celebrating but the 50-year anniversary since inmates escaped from the island and the mystery continues. did they survive? >> new this morning, a report says pro syrian government forces torturing children even using some as human shields. the report releasing -- released says children as young as 10 are being abused, some put on tanks so that rebels will not fire at the tanks. rebel forces also a target in this report. it says children are being recruited to work in medical and service jobs out on the front line. >> as many as 100 people are feared dead in two earthquakes and land slide that buried up to 30 houses in northern afghanistan. crews scrambling to free people trapped. the quake measuring 5.4 and 5.7 were centered in a remote

collection of mountain villages. >> 6:14. the second day of jerry sandusky's trial getting under way. a second man is expected to testify today about alleged sexual abuse. victim one graduated from high school and his confession to his mother set off the investigation that led to the trial. yesterday a 28-year-old man called victim four detailed the abuse by a former penn state coach in the late 1990s. >> he regretted not coming forward earlier because he felt guilty that maybe he was responsible for these other victims having been molested. >> sandusky's attorney pointed out to jurors that showering with a boy is not a crime. the defense claims that sandusky's accusers are motivated by money. >> arizona holding a special etleex replace gabrielle giffords. she has been campaigning for her former aide ron barber running for his former boss's seat.

the winner of today's special election will have to do it over again and run in november. >> the battle over thomas kinkade's estate is heating up. his live-in girlfriend has produced two handwritten letters she claims that kinkade wrote. in the notes he allegedly gives his mansion and $10 million to amy pinto walsh. nanette kinkade married to "the artist" has been fighting for control of the estate since the painter's death in april. >> the defending u.s. open champion will try his hand at another sport. >> 23-year-old rory mcelroy. we'll find out at the giants game. it's also irish heritage night at at&t park. mcelroy is from northern

com score looked at businesses like starbucks an got more customers after lots of people posted, what the industry calls basically free advertising. you post you like new frappuccino and sales go up. the advertisements that they buy on facebook are affected. facebook could use some of this good press as kout lingers over growth. smart meters are starting to show up. the eu concerned that they violate privacy. it's fairly easy for the power company to tell that your home or away from home based on power use and europe has very strict privacy laws. sticking to your news reports officials have considered shutting down atms in greece in order to slow the transfer of

hispanic vote, that's about 9% in the last election, may be more now so you'll see both president obama and mitt romney focusing on this key voting bloc. $4 million unleashed today on colorado, nevada and florida, three key battleground states where the president hopes to win over the hispanic voters, focusing on mitt romney and his record with bain capital. the campaign has an ad that's going to focus on romney's record as governor. this one, the $4 million buy is targeting hispanic voters. mitt romney meantime, is going after that vote, unlike john mccain four years ago romney is going to make an aggressive pitch we're told focusing not so much on immigration an area where they disagree but focusing on the economy. he has been telling latino voters that the obama administration created a hostile environment for small

shuttle service runs around the clock till 9:00 each night about a 30-minute trip to the greens. we talked to many of the fans, many are volunteers, they say this is not their first rodeo. >> first u.s. open? >> no, our second volunteering. we came from maryland and we volunteered last year. in bethesda. >> reporter: no doubt all eyes on tiger after his stunning win about a week ago. once you park out here, be prepared to go through a metal screening process. they are very strict what you can and cannot bring. no electronics, for instance, this means no cell phones, cameras or camcorders as of thursday that's the official start of play. you can't bring those out during the practice round which is today and tomorrow. also no bags larger than eight

things is remove these signal gates. they will also check to make sure they know where all of the utilities are. such as gas pipe lines. what this means is that traffic will be impacted for the next ten days with temporary lane closures near the flea market. to avoid the mess take sierra road or mckee road to get around it. 10 miles of track in two. the current rails that are here will be shifted to make room and new tracks brought in. construction is expected to be totally complete bid 2016, when bart takes over. trains could be rolling by 2201. reporting live, christie smith,

"today in the bay." >> starting next month half of the fire stations in the east contra costa fire district are shutting down. july 1 stations will be closed in the bethel island area, and brentwood. 16 of the district's firefighters will lose their jobs. the district approving the cuts monday days after voters failed to approve. firefighters say it's a tough compromise but there will be enough firefighters on each engine to handle each call. >> based on the situation that we're in out here and the number of calls that they go on and the types of balls, it's critical that we maintain staffing. we're happy there will be 3 firefighters on each engine. >> $3 million are now cut from the fire district. >> time to check the forecast. we had a bitle warm-up

>> right now we give you a live shot over san francisco, the sun out there, the clouds. starting to blow out in some of the areas. christina loren will talk about the weather and fog that may remain coming up. >> more victims are expected to take the stand today now that testimony is resuming in the trial of jerry sandusky, the former penn state football coach is accused of molesting ten boys over 15 years. chris palone is live to tell us who will take the stand today. >> reporter: good morning, laura. court has been in session about 30 to 40 minutes here in bellefonte, pennsylvania, jerry sandusky arrived a little after 8:00. this morning we expect a young man who is known in court documents as victim number 1, to take the stand. like the other seven alleged

victims in this case who are expected to testify, we expect him to paint a picture like all of the other folks, of a trusted figure a man who many of them considered to be like a father figure, and they are describing stories of how this father figure to them allegedly started destroying their trust by molesting them over a period of several years. now yesterday, the prosecution put on what they considered to be their best witness who is now a 28-year-old n, he is described in court documents as victim 4. he said that sandusky initiated contact with him when he was 13 years old, started as horseplay in the coach's locker room at penn state but escalated and lasted nearly five years. the alleged victim said he didn't want to come forward originally because he was embarrassed and he also said that he enjoyed some of the

perks of being friends with sandusky, trips, access to the football team, gifts, shoes and golf clubs, sandusky's attorney is trying to show these men are coming out to testify and accuse sandusky are doing fort the money. he asked the man, victim 4, why he's already retained an attorney, asked if he plans to file a civil lawsuit. trying to show perhaps some if not all of the young men involved in this case are trying to get some sort of pay day. so as we said, court has just started about 30 or 40 minutes ago. we expect a young man who is known as victim number 1 to be on the stand this morning for quite some time. that's the story from here. back to you. >> chris, thank you very much a. texas father could face charges for killing a man he caught sexually assaulting his 4-year-old daughter. investigators say the father walked in on the attack saturday in the town of shiner. the two men knew each other. the father punched the man in

the head ultimately killing him. so far no charges have been filed. the sheriff will leave it up to a grand jury. >> you see a lot of strange things on the streets of los angeles. a recent find was the first of its kind. a pair of lungs found outside of the city limits. the organs are at the coroner's office where they are trying to determine if they are human. >> very scary. 6:48. the "today" show is next. matt lauer has a look at what's coming up. >> coming up on a tuesday, the wild fire that's raging in colorado doubles in size in a single day to more than 40,000 acres, at least one death being blamed on the fire. we'll get a live report from the front line. also ahead, commerce secretary john bryson announces an indefinite leave of absence after he reportedly caused three car accidents while having a seizure. we'll have the latest on that. and a video seen by millions, a dad punishing his step-son
