good morning. >> good morning to you. this three-alarm fire having an impact hours after it started. at least 20 people displaced from the apartments. here with us this morning is the chief. can you walk us through what happened here overnight? >> we got called for a large fire approximately 12:30 in the morning. we arrived to heavy fire in the back of the driveway. our crews were able to advance on the fire pushing a lot of hose in there and there was a lot of fire there. they extinguished the fire. you say it's suspicious, possibly deliberately set? >> there were items found that make it appear to be a deliberate action. >> reporter: and there were cars burned in the back? does it appear that that may have been where it start snd. >> the investigators are working on that. as soon as we know something, we'll make those reports. >> how many apartments actually gutted, how many affected here?

>> we have two gutted, two others that were having some damage to them. this building here we're not going to let anybody back in until the investigators have a chance to go through the building and see if they can find anything. >> everything made it out okay? >> that's correct. >> those people displaced, where are they at? >> the fair oaks community center. we have a temporary shelter set up by the red cross. >> arson investigators out here or on the way? >> we have an investigator here now and he's waiting for the rest of the team to show up and continue the investigation. >> thank you very much for talking with us this morning. that's what we have from here. our investigators are going to be out here for quite some time. reporting live in redwood city, i'm christie smith "today in the bay." questions raised this morning over pg&e's reaction to a gas fire. the worker was badly burned, and it took two hours before that gas was shut off. mountain meantime it just fed

flames burning the house and three adjoining structures. one man evacuated next door said it was scary to snell the gas for so long. >> pg&e why rarnt they shutting it off. the next thing i thought about was san breno. >> they could not gt to the shutoff valve because of the fire. they used a jackhammer on the street to get to the line. three firefighters were treated and released at the hospital. san jose police searching this morning for a gunman in a drive-by shooting that left a teenager dead. the 17-year-old boy was shot several times walking along the road near story road after 6:00 tuesday night. investigators have not said if the shooting was gang-related and no arrests have been made. this marks san jose's 19th homicide of the year. a criminal investigation could be in the works after a deadly south bay construction accident. state investigators made that recommendation on tuesday. a 37-year-old worker died back

in january after a 12-foot high wall collapsed on him while on a job. investigators say there were numerous workplace safety violations at the time, and the accident happened three days after a stop work order had been issued. cal osha ordered fremont-based sinow investments to pay fines. san jose's controversial pension reform plan is put in place. just last week voters approved measure b reducing city employee pensions. the city council moving quickly to begin making the cuts voting last night to shrink benefits for new city hires with the exception of police and firefighters. workers will now have to play half of the costs of their pension, which will have smaller payouts and a higher retirement age. >> with the clock ticking on a new state budget they're closer to striking a deal. democrats are less than $500

players are going to be the least talkative amongst each other during turn itment play. they need to be focused, play smart and have a strong strategy. the lake course known for nare he row fairway doesn't have a single water hazard on it. it has significant changing elevations. a scratch golfer who has played this course some 2,000 times joining me live this morning. dan, you played collegiately for georgetown university. thanks for being with us. >> thank you. >> the last time it was held at the olympic club in 1998. a whole lot has been changed on thes greens here. >> they lengthened the golf course to make it longer, about 7200 yards. one of the big changes is they cut down a lot of trees. when it's windy out here, it affects the ball more. as we know in today's climate, that wind allows the course to

dry out and play faster. they did re-did all the greens three years ago and put in a drainage system into the drains. as the greens get wet, they drain faster. when they drain faster, they firm up a lot quicker. so the greens are going to be very firm and very fast. >> i know there are a couple of controversial holes, including hole number 13 which is the shortest hole at 199 yards. what's going on there? >> that's a tough hole. it's 200 yard shot where a par 3 where if you hit a draw into a left pin placement or any pin placement and get a left on the green, you can roll off the green. it's the shave down the left side, and you can go into a ravine to lose your ball and get a one-stroke penalty. there's going to be a lot of people complaining about that hole this week. >> thank you for the information this morning. dan has been an olympic club

afternoon, winds are a factor on the east side of the bay area. it's really interests what's happening with the microclimates giving you a difficult time this morning. we have calm conditions. that's where the fog is. we have sustained wind speeds of 5 to 8 miles per hour or above, we don't have fog. that dense air mass isn't able it to settle in. as we head through the date today, we see the winds pick up. not expecting a whole lot at the cost. 79 degrees by noon inland and 83 at 4:00 p.m. bayside about 55 degrees and if winds come into play when it comes to that course today, the best chance is between 10:00 and 3:00. keep that in mind. if you're part of mike's galley, check on the drive right now. >> i would love aroundy's armies. i would live mike's minions.

typical flow of traffic in morning. the exclamation point on 242. some sort of debris reported in the roadway. we check on that to see if it's an issue. so far no slowing reported a couple of minutes ago. heading to the bay bridge, a smooth drive and congestion starting to build in some spots like the caldecott because a car is reported without any gas. they have not caused major backup. it looks like the median lights just turned on. it's 6:10. today nurses are set to strike at nine bay area hospitals. as many as 4400 nurses could walk off the job at hospitals operated by sutter health. sutter has been negotiating a new contract with those nurses unions for more than a year. the two sides clash over sick pay and cuts in employee benefits. among the hospitals involved in today's strike, mills peninsula health services and eden medical center. sutter says the hospitals will stay open during the strike and replacement nurses have been

hired for the next five days. good news for low income kids in san francisco. soon they may not have to worry about finding money to ride muni. funding for free rides program could be approved today. the bay area's lead transit agency set to put up $4 million. this money combined with other city funds lets about 40,000 low income youngsters ride for free. it's 6:11 right now. coming up on "today in the bay," the third day of jerry sandusky's sex abuse trial is under way. we'll tell you who is expected to take the witness stand coming up. who says syria is at full-scale civil war this morning, a day after u.s. accuses russia of selling helicopters to government forces. ghat went wrong. we take a look at it coming up in business.

raping a boy in 2001. >> mcmcinquiry is the independent witness that has nothing to gain from his testimony. again today he comes forward as someone who saw something very unusual, very out of the ordinary, and it able to corroborate the story of the other victims. >> earlier tuesday they heard from the teen known as victim number 1. he testified that sandusky touched him inappropriately when he was 10 or 11 years old. we have more on the testimony in a live report. that entire story hard to process. it's 6:15 right now. 69-year-old bruce davis has a parole hearing, his 27th since being convicted in two 1969 killings. two years ago davis was granted parole but it was overturned by then governor arnold schwarzenegger. davis among a family of followers that went on a killing spry auto behalf of manson.

he's serving a life sentence for nine murders. henry hill the mob informant immortalized in good fell laes. he passed away in los angeles after a long illness. he fell into the mob as a teen in 18978. he took part in an airport heist that scooped up a then record $35 million. hill turned informant back in 1980 after a drug bust. ray played him in the 1990 movie. the philly phanatic, the mascot is sued. the famous green mascot threw her into a pool two years ago leaving her two severe injuries to every part of her body. this is not his first brush with the lawsuit. he's been sued before for hugging somebody too hard and injuring an ath rittic woman's legs.

pushing out to sea and we have a lot of sunshine. with limited sunshine with the first few hours temperatures are cooler. if you wait for that heat relief, it will last tomorrow into tomorrow. in the olympic club, breezy conditions between 10:00 and noon, 64 degrees at noon. comfortable conditions. if you head out there, bring the sunglasses. even though it's foggy to start, the sunbreaks through the cloud in daly city today. 83 degrees here in san jose and 86 in san francisco. here's where it gets interesting. i had to do this. i didn't want to do this, but i had to do this. i've taken your temperature to 99 degrees on saturday. i was looking at the latest model runs, and we have got this big ridge of high pressure heading our way. i wouldn't be surprised to see triple-digits in places like livermore. >> thanks. >> you're so excited, laura. >> i moved from arizona for a reason, my dear. >> you know what it means? it means mankini weather for

story. >> good morning. the app is called scout. at least three teenagers used that service to meet people they thought were other teenagers and they were assaults and they were assaulted. the san francisco-based company allowed underaged users with their parents permission to use a separate section of the app but fulled that functionality. the ceo said in a blog post safety measures built in weren't efficient and suspended underage access. the company said it started to allow limited access because kids were using it anyway. p if kids sneak in, let them in and work to protect them. facebook is considering something similar four users under 13. other news. the justice department is looking into whether cable companies are trying to quash efforts by hulu and netflix by bringing tv shows without hooking up cable. in particular investigators are curious why some tv and internet

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." thank you for joining us. we're following breaking news this morning. >> redwood city firefighters at the scene of what they say appears to be an arson fire. the three alarm blaze led more than two dez people homeless. christie smith joins us live from the scene. you just talked with the chief. >> i can tell you one arson investigator is here on the scene, and more are on the way after a fast-moving fire ripped through the apartment building. the two units in the rear there are gutted. that's where the fire was when they arrived at stan burrow street at 12:30 this morning. the back of the building has a car port, and earlier we were told about five cars were burned back there. that battalion chief tells me it

looks like more than 11 are burned down to a shell or damaged. the heat and flames forced people on the adjacent building out, too. no one was hurt and redwood city fire knocked down the flames quickly and determined this was suspicious. >> there's some things that were found with the cars, and there was a lot of fire when we arrived. all those -- the investigator believes that it was deliberate. it appears to be deliberate. >> the number of other apartment units here have smoke or water damage, so at least 27 people are displaced this morning. they're now getting help from the red cross. there is a shelter set up at the fair oaks community center. some residents are coming back here this morning, if we can pan over here in the green building. some of them are allowed back in. so far no one is let back in, and arson investigators say they'll be here for quite some time. christie smith, today in the

bay. soon people can't sit or lie on berkeley sidewalks during the daytime that is. overnight the berkeley stel council pass sgd to keep people from sitting on sidewalks in industrial areas between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. they say is criminalizes the homeless. it won't go into effect until july of next year. a renewed search and bigger eregard in the sierra lamar case. the parents plan to announce an increase in the $25,000 reward for information leading to her safe return or a conviction in the case. they're announcement is set for 8:30 this morning followed by a community search. prosecutors charged garcia-torres with killing sierra even though her has not been found. the wife of the sheriff may be staying in venezuela. she wants to extend her sta stay

for another two months. he's under court order to stay away from his wife. lopez is visiting her sick father but needed the court's okay to keep the couple's son with her. she's supposed to return next week. today is the final practice round for the u.s. open golf championship. the course is proving to be daunting to even the best golfers in the world. live at san francisco's olympic club this morning we look at final preparations. good morning. >> laura, good morning. we're just starting to see some of the players arriving here at lat a. in a pros conference yesterday, tiger woods was asked about the lake course, and he says simply, it is a grind. he is preparing himself for aid grind. a lot has changed on the course out here since the u.s. open was last held here. that was in '98. the players who have played the course over and over, including woods, are basically having to relearn it. woods saying his course charts

are outdated. the course has been resurfaced and holes and pars are changed. there are new chipping area. the starting six holes are said to be the toughest in a major championship golf turn: out here this morning we talk to dan who played college golf with georgetown university. you've been an olympic club member for 23 years. how many times do you think you've played this course? >> too much. >> about 2,000 is what you said. what is the key to playing this course well? >> i think in any u.s. open the key is to hit the fairways, no matter if you're hitting a driver, 3 wood or 2 iron off the tee. if you're an inch in the roof, you need a pitching wedge out to get it back into the fairway and have a shot at the green. i would say hitting the fairways is a premium, and then also on your approach shot missing the green. if you do miss the green, miss it in the right place. at this course if you're below the hole or in front of the green, it's a lot easier in the fairway in front of the green rather than behind the hole in deep, thick rough. >> probably easier said than done, i imagine.

we were talking about a portion of the course to make-or-break a player's game, talking specifically about hole 17. what's going on there? >> the 17th hole in this open is a par 5, and in the last two opens it was a par 4. it's a 520-yard par 5 that's reachable, and so there's going to -- there's risk/reward and a lot of players go for it on the other second shot and some players lay it out. if they go for it on the second shot, what the usga did is shaved down the right side of the green. if you hit it right at green, it will roll into the rough on the 18th hole and you have to hit it through the trees. so it's a fun hole to watch. >> a lot of people will be watching. no doubt about it. thank you so much, dan. well, practice gets under way on the third and final day of practice in a little bit. it if you're headed out here yourself, no cell phones allowed out here at the u.s. open at the olympic club. live in san francisco, "today in the bay."

beautiful, beautiful shot here. the reason why it's so pretty is because this is an indication of cooler weather. it has been scorching around here for the past couple of days. not the case today, and that marine layer pushes across the bay bridge. you see from the grade shading here how far it penetrated this morning. no relief in the central valley. that delta breeze not doing much for them today. it will be very hot if you're headed towards southern california. it's a hot drive down there. i wanted to point out we have good visibility everywhere. nonetheless flight delays out of sfo this morning and there's a direct correlation between the calm winds. where we don't see the shading is up in the north bay. we've had a sustained wind speed, and that kept the fog from settling in up there. by noon today the sun breaking through everywhere. 79 degrees inland, up to 83 degrees by 4:00 p.m. significantly cooler than yesterday, but we have a major heatwave on the weekend. we'll go through that seven-day

in a moment. back to the south bay because we have another incident. we have slowing for 87 at the bottom of the screen, guadalupe parkway there. the accident now moved to the center divider, but that triggers the slowdown which we typically see in that sfot from tully and heading into toward 880 as well. heading into the area, a three or four-car accident reported here as well and now an accident headed to the scene. an ambulance is heading there, although no serious injuries and no lanes reported block. it's out of hayward in union city. we'll go back to you off this map. it's 6:39. coming up on today in the bay, testimony is under way right now in the third day of jerry sandusky's trial. find out who is taking the stan.

morning, about a half hour before court began. he was seen helping his lawyers gather some papers and bring them into the kouthoucourthouse. the defense is trying to convince the jury in in case that the alleged victims testifying are just out for money in this case, but yesterday prosecutors called to the stand their star witness who had nothing to gain and everything to lose going forward. he's former grad assistant mike mcqueary. he's the only witness who claims to see sandusky alone in the shower with a young boy. he testified yesterday afternoon in 2001 he spotted sandusky with his arms around a boy 10 years old in a locker room shower. he made noise to let sandusky know he was in the room. analysts for nbc news say mcqueary was a very strong witness for the prosecution. earlier in the day day tuesday a teen known as victim number one put his head in his hands and sobbed and said he met sandusky

around 10 or 11. what was a father figure relationship turned into something improper. coming up today we expect to hear from the people known in court documents as victims 5 and 6, and we've been told that mike mcqueary, that grad assistant from penn state, his father john is on the stand right now. mike mcqueary testified yesterday that he first went to his father to tell him what he witnessed in the penn state locker room. right now looks like the prosecution is getting a corroborating witness on the stand. that's the story here. back to you. >> thank you, chris. this is a wild story. take a look at this. a texas toddler doing just fine after a rollover crash dumped her right out onto the street. it's caught on a police dash camera. look at this. suv police were chasing rolls over on the street. you see an 18-month-old girl thrown out, but incredibly once she's out, she's able to pick herself up off the ground and starts running after the car.

somebody inside scoops her up, but they don't get too far. the teenage parents and two others are inside the suv in police custody. the little girl only suffered minor injuries. that's mind-blowing at that speed. >> oh, my goodness. >> i wonder if the baby was in a chi child seat. >> if you get your little ones ready this morning, dress them for two parts of the day. we're one week away from the official start of summertime here in the bay area. as you can see, that june gloom is back, but only for one day. it's going to cool us off and take the temperatures from the mid-80s and low 90s inland yesterday back to the low 80s. we have a really good-looking forecast. if you're sick of the heat and have to use your ac and another benefit of that onshore flow is good air quality.

we get a nice purification of our air quality as that westerly wind blows. 51 degrees in oakland and 59 in sunnyvale. it's gusty this morning with high pressure still in control, but the jet stream takes a significant dip to the south. they work against each other, so we have breezy to windy conditions on the east end of the bay area for the first part of the day. we see a much warmer thursday. if you have tickets, if you're the lucky ticket holder to the u.s. open today, it's going to be really nice. you have to wait for the sunshine until about noon, but it will break through the clouds. 64 degrees at noon, 65 at 4:00 p.m. with clear conditions, just some patchy fog, ragged patches hugging the coastline today. 83 in san jose today, 86 in livermore. seven-day forecast tells the story. we're going to climb in temperature. i stopped it at friday, 88 degrees, because by saturday just getting downright hot. 99 degrees inland, and then

towards airway and to the double interchange. almost a half hour for that drive. we look for a slower drive for castro valley off the y. pretty typical pattern there. south of oakland and north out of oakland as well. we look at this slower drive. let's end with the shot. we have the 25-minute drive off the bridge, you guys. back to you. >> the numbers show consumers are spending less but according to scott mcgrew that's not bad news. good morning. consumers are spending less. we have the latest information on retail sales. they are down, but keep in mind it includes gasoline purchases and gas prices have been falling. so bottom line, consumers are spending less, but much of that is because they're spending less to fill the gas tank. good news. taking a look at the markets, the dow industrials are down 50 points to 1223 and nasdaq is down 9, zinga gaining a little after a terrible day yesterday. southwest looking ahead to fall.

city and port oakland could lose a quarter of a billion dollars in state funding. the project would transform the former base into a warehouse center serving the nearby port. we talk about letting california consumers know exactly what's in the food that they eat. voters will decide whether special labels should be required on foods with genet genetically modified ingredients. advocates collecting more than a half million signatures to get the labeling mandates on the november ballot. if it passes california is the first state to require such labels. san jose's controversial pension reform plan is being put in place. jst last week voters aapproved measure b reducing city employee pensions. the city council has moved quickly to make the cuts, voting last night to shrink benefits for new city hires with the exception of police and firefighters. they have to pay half cost of their pension, which will have smaller payouts and a here retirement age.

state lawmakers are getting closer to striking a deal. democrats are less than $500 million apart from governor jerry brown in negotiations over the proposed cuts. they didn't specify what the differences are. both sides of the house of the state legislature do not pass a balanced spending plan by friday, they risk losing their pay for every day the state goes without one. lawmakers needing to close a $16 billion budget gap. 6:54. san jose police are searching this morn for a gunman in a drive high by shooting that left a teenager dead. this 17-year-old boy was hit several times by gunfire as he was walking near story road just after 6:00 tuesday night. investigators will not say if the shooting was gang-related, and no arrests have been made. this is san jose's 19th homicide of the year. menlo park police this morning hoping you can help them catch a teenager who beat up a 73-year-old woman arguing over a cigarette. officers say the boy approached

the woman monday night on lexington drive about 9:00 p.m. that's when the woman turned away from him, and he came back and punched her several times causing her to fall. she's recovering. that gentleman took off. this morning a local company hilt with heavy fines for the death of a carpenter at a construction site. cal osha ordering fremont-based uss inow investments to pay $170,000 three days after the city issued a stop work order on the project. raul zapa it ta was buried alive anyway trench in january. the tragedy the family's attorney says could have been prevented. >> i think there's a lot of sadness and there's some anger. i think that the cal osha report seems to indicate this truly was a needless tragedy, and that there were numerous opportunities to avoid this. >> the state is recommending criminal charges be filed against the construction company as well.

new this morning. two people right now under arrest for fires set at the castro immune muni station earl today. they were called out at 4:00 this morning. it was closed for the night when the fires were set. service not affected by the arrests. right now, back to breaking news that we've been following all morning long. a suspected arson fire leaving dozens of people homeless in redwood city, and it all started on stambouhh street after midnight. "today in the bay quarter quarter is live on the scene with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. arson investigators are here and so are police. i was talking with residents waiting to get word on their apartments, a handful allowed back in. 27 people were displaced after this fire overnight. firefighters just pulling out right now. i was talking with a teenager who lives here who says he saw sparks near the car port in the

rear while working on his computer. that's when he saw a fire. he grabbed his 8-year-old sister and 3-year-old sister and gout of the apartment after mid knit. two units were completely gutted and others damaged and up to 11 cars in that car port damaged or burned. any say it was suspicious, likely deliberately set. we hear that one dog died in the fire. all residents made it out. they are getting help from the red cross this morning. we're also hearing from some neighbors this morning that there have been some trouble here in the past with someone coming around and breaking car windows. investigators telling us that they will be here for quite some time. reporting live in redwood city, christie smith, "today in the bay." we're minutes away from the start of practice rounds for the u.s. open championship. we have a look at final preparations under way. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. some of the players already on

the driving range behind us here as you mentioned. practice rounds get under way any minute now. this is the last day for the players to really familiarize themselves with the very difficult lake course out here. it's a par 70, 7200 yards. starting six holes are said to be the toughest in major championship golf, hole 13. it is the shorter at 199 yards, par 3, but it could be the most challenging because it's severely sloped. so if it's miscalculated at all, that ball could end up in the ravine. hole 16 at 670 yards, it is the longest in u.s. open history. so quite a few challenges awaiting the 156 players taking part in this u.s. open. now, round one starting tomorrow. the big three everyone is talking about, of course, tiger woods, phil mickelson and bubba watson. they tee off tomorrow morning at 7:33, and we will be here. live at the olympic club, "today in the bay." >> quite a gallery out there.
