now yesterday one of ten alleged victims told the jury sandusky threatened he would never see his family again if he told anyone about the alleged sexual abuse. nbc's brian mooar reports. >> reporter: the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial is moving so quickly the judge announced the prosecution's case could wrap up as early as friday. once the defense begins, sandusky is expected to testify, and it may be a critical chance to undo any damage done yesterday when jurors heard this interview with nbc's bob costas. >> are you sexually attracted to underage boys? >> am i sexually attracted to underage boys? >> yes. >> sexually attracted? i enjoy young people. i love to be around them, but, no, i -- i -- but, no, i'm not sexually attracted to young boys. >> reporter: also on day three a

janitor testified that a coworker now suffering from dementia caught sandusky in an athletic facility shower with a young boy. three alleged victims also told stories that echoed each other and previous accusers. >> there is that thread that runs through all these victims. >> reporter: one wept as he recalled an encounter in a penn state sauna. another said sandusky threatened him when he tried to avoid the older man's advances. a third said sandusky fondled and groped him repeatedly. under defense questioning, he admitted he had told a grand jury there was no abuse but said it was so dramatic he had just blocked it out. brian mooar, nbc news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. back on the campaign trail, it's all about the economy. president obama and mitt romney are in the battleground state of ohio where they're both trying to convince voters that they have the right economic plan. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with those details. tracie, good morning. >> lynn, good morning.

let's start with mitt romney who headings to a business conference. he said americans are tired of politicians making excuses instead of taking responsibility and he predicted president's speech in ohio will be eloquent but as he put it words are cheap. white house says president obama will be drawing clear distinctions on tax cuts and adding to the deficit. recent polls in ohio give romney a bit of an edge, but the president may not have as much of a challenge with jobs in ohio. the jobless rate, less than the national rate. but when it comes to their economic plans, it appears that americans especially independent voters aren't happy with either candidate. 54% against president obama's

plan, and almost half, 47%, against mitt romney's. >> tracie potts there for us in washington. thank you. well, new doping charges have been filed against former cycling champion lance armstrong. armstrong won seven tour de france cycling titles, but he could be stripped of those victories by the u.s. anti-doping agency. it says it collected blood samples from armstrong in 2009 and 2010 that were consistent with blood manipulations and transfusions. armstrong has never tested positive for drugs, and he denies the charges. he has been immediately barred from iron man triathlons, which he has been doing since retiring from cycling last year. well, now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. a severe storm system gave dallas a pounding, leaving widespread damage in its wake. golf ball-sized hail pelted the region, shattering windshields and destroying the marquee on a historic theater there. the nearly 30-minute storm also toppled power lines and trees, but luckily it didn't cause any

injuries to anyone. well, unlike the neighbors in the north, showers in corpus christi were more of an isolated incident. a 30-foot geyser erupted from a residential street after a water main rupture. the break in the valve caused flooding, and it took almost four hours for crews to shut the water off. and, finally, the celebration of father's day came a few days early for one upstate new york girl and her military dad. while the naval officer surprised his daughter at field day with an early return from the middle east. she later said she missed him, quote, 100%. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has your weather channel forecast. >> her like so many people will have a great father's day forecast. looking very nice. a slow weather day out there came. let's he take a broad picture of

where we stand in the middle of june. look at the rainfall totals. southeastern united states, we've taken a little dent out of the drought with significant rain around new orleans to orlando. also the northeast had a little dry weather to start for you and you've gotten plenty of rain. where the fires have been getting worse, the mountainous areas haven't received much rain at all. even san francisco got a little bit, but we're pretty dry and we haven't seen any in southern california from vegas all the way down to arizona. we don't usually in june anyway. so hot and dry once again. the on shore flow continues lately, we haven't really seen the winds reversing in a while. coastaltal areas of california, that's why you'll start off with low clouds and you'll burn them off later ta today. in between storms in the northeast. but chilly.

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. massive wildfires continue to rage in the west. a wildfire in new mexico has burned more than 37,000 acres and destroyed at least 224 homes. and a fire in colorado has destroyed about a hundred buildings and burned 73 square miles. john edwards will not face another trial on charges of using campaign donations to cover up his pregnant mistress. the justice department dropped all charges against edwards after his corruption trial last month ended in a deadlocked jury. a texas man has been convicted of murder after a houston jury rejected his "stand your ground" defense. raul rodriguez shot and killed his unarmed neighbor in a dispute over a noisy birthday party in 2010. and a basketball washed away

the nasdaq fell 24. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei sank 18 points, while in hong kong the hang seng lost 218. well, uncertainty over europe's debt crisis resurfaced again wednesday and kept overseas investors on edge this morning. asian stocks sputtered today after moody's slashed spain's credit rating to the edge of junk status. meanwhile an italian debt auction added to investors' anxiety ahead of sunday's elections in greece, which could potentially lead to the country's exit from the eurozone. those greek worries set in here at home wednesday as investors came off the sidelines to sell off risky bets. a fresh round of gloomy economic news didn't help. ironically, falling gas prices took a chunk out of retail sales, which were down the past two months. u.s. foreclosure starts rose year after year in may for the first time in more than two years. shares of jpmorgan chase

ticked up 1.5% as chief jamie dimon apologized to congress for his firm's multi-billion-dollar trading loss that raised fresh questions about wall street oversight. jetblue ranked first among low cost air carriers, according to a new customer satisfaction survey. not surprisingly, the study found travelers were least satisfied with carriers that charge an additional fee for baggage. according to the department of education, the average tuition at a four-year public university increased by 15% between 2008 and 2010. and, finally, are you bored with dot-com? well, give it about a year. as part of a major upcoming expansion, the internet address powers-that-be are sifting through new domain extensions, including dot-pizza, dot-love, and dot-apple. i hope there are some other options. well, coming up, the cards blanked the white sox, the brewers walk off in extras, and the mets' one-hit wonder.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." and in sports last night, giants' pitcher matt cain became the 22nd player in major league history to throw a perfect game. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. the san francisco giants jumped out to an early lead, and then matt cain made history. let's go to san francisco. it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's just some guy with a jet pack flying around the covey cove. that's one way to beat the traffic. he wasn't the only thing flying through the air. giants with three home runs against the astros. they were up 10-0 after five. and matt cain took over from there. struck out 14. had a little help from his friends. in the seventh, jordan schafer shot deep to right. gregor blanco on his horse, a diving grab on the warning track, and that kept the perfect game intact. to the ninth, pinch hitter jason castro, a chance to break up perfection. a shot to third, a tough play,

the throw to first, and castro is out. 27 up, 27 down for matt cain. giants won it, 10-0. cain just the 22nd pitcher in league history to pitch a perfect game. tough to follow that up, but r.a. dickey became the first pitcher to win ten games. gave up a single in the first inning, and that was all. dickey struck out 12-9. the mets won it, 9-1. about an hour later, the cards' lance lynn picked up his tenth of the year. carlos beltran gave st. louis a 1-0 lead with his 19th home run. that's all lynn needed. cards won it, 1-0. now to atlanta, jimmy carter enjoying the game, but i don't know how much he enjoyed this. curtis granderson, a two-run shot that gave the yanks the lead, and they sweep the braves, 3-2. finally, high drama in kansas city. royals down two, two outs in the ninth. everything riding on alcides escobar. he delivered a triple into the gap. in came a pair. k.c. tied the game and forced extra innings. and then in the 11th, the sacks full for mike moustakas, all he had to do was stand there.

in scotland some lucky students recreate a moment from film history. the olympic torch was used to replicate the iconic scene from the film, "chariots of fire." the group mirrored the opening scene of the 1981 best picture winner. unfortunately no good movie soundtrack to go with it. this was just one part of the torch's 145-mile journey. in estonia, it doesn't matter how fast you go as long as you look good. at this soapbox derby, creativity is valued over speed, and it brought out some unusual vehicles from ice cream-shaped cars to formula one copies and even a magic carpet ride. 22 contestants coasted their self-made racers down the track, showcasing their skills. and speaking of skills,
