4:30 am
>> good morning. it is 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news, a massive fire is burning in oakland. >> it is a three-story building under construction at seventh and mandela next to the b.a.r.t. station. we're learning that b.a.r.t. down to san francisco is shut down. we have people to coverage. mike inouye is checking in on the commute but we start off with christie smith live at the scene. good morning, christie. what's happening? >> reporter: good morning to you. we're at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and i wanted to show you quickly the tracks we're talking about. those were singed in this fire at a senior center under construction. the flames so close to the
4:31 am
tracks it has affected bart service. >> i'll repeat that, no b.a.r.t. service between east bay and san francisco until further notice. i would suggest to commuters to try to find a different way to get across the bay. there is bus service, there are ferries and obviously the bay bridge. so we haven't had a chance to assess the damage yet. we're not sure when we would be able to re-establish b.a.r.t. service but we don't have any now. >> we heard talk earlier about a bus bridge. can you clarify that? >> a bus bridge is something we try to do in extreme circumstances but b.a.r.t. does not own buses so we're trying to establish that. so again, until we get that set up, my advice is to use an alternate means of transportation. ac transit, the ferries or maybe a friend who is willing to give you a ride. >> we know the west oakland b.a.r.t. station is affected. any other stations affected? >> no other stations are
4:32 am
affected. it's primarily the train service. we can't get across a section of track that carries four of our five lines into san francisco and across to the east bay. >> where are the trains turning around? >> i haven't had a chance to get an update on where the trains are turning around. they are kind of running through some of the stations that are affected. and for the next update i'll have that information. >> if your train goes through oakland there is an issue. >> if you take b.a.r.t. into san francisco from the east bay, this is an issue for you. you should find a different way to get to where you need to go. >> thank you very much, jim. and again, this has to do with a fire that was happening overnight. firefighters, as you can see in the background, they are still spraying water on it now. don't know how it started but they will be here for quite some time. this was actually a four-story building under construction that has burned so badly it's down to one story so we'll keep an eye
4:33 am
on it. >> obviously it's going to be a long morning for a lot of commuters. check in with mike now. sounds like they don't have the bus bridges. >> right. as jim told us, b.a.r.t. doesn't own buses. some are not clear about that because the bus stations end there as well. they don't have the lines set up so you will hav b h b asn a tealrnrne, ac transitim js j i ngggesti. right now no transbay svice for the b.a.r.t. system. west oakland is the closest. t heinbandckgrou yougr couldee some traffic on the freeway above where they are spraying on basicay eth complexe under construction so. this will affect the.r.a b.t. .a service, any one through the west oakland station, to or fra francisco, its ssa loundike the east bay is cut off. the east bay will be running richmond down to fremont, and the dublin lines are okay once nu'here o t etas side also t
4:34 am
through oakland but you'll have to consider altltste for the roads to theth ss s san mateo bridge should be clear no. major problems for that portion. but this fire itself, it's near the y where 980 meets 880. as crews continue to work if there is a considerable amount of smoke it will be a distraction for 880, 980 and through oakland in addition to the fact that they are hitting the roads because they cannot take b.a.r.t. all of that service is cut off. we'll track that. jim is going to have more as they get it. the local power outage you can see from the chopper. the crews are on the scene. there are no surface street lights as i understand it some power poles are affected as well. we'll track that because as i understand it, the b.a.r.t. system is on a separate power system thanem the local street lights so back to you and i'll get back to the traffic center. >> mike, thank you for that. we're also following a developing story in san francisco. three people wounded, one
4:35 am
fatally in an overnight shooting, that gun fire happening at the silver terrace play ground at silver avenue and almyra streets west of the 101/280 interchange. we can tell you police have not released information about a possible suspect or motive. >> 4:35. a san francisco cyclist facing vehicular manslaughter for the death of a pedestrian. chris pucare will surrender. they say he was speeding and ran a red light, admitted on line that he plowed into pedestrians in the crosswalk. >> a sexual predator faces possibility of life in prison after a discovery. john moore was tracked from washington state t family renting a room in his home found
4:36 am
hidden cameras behind a bathroom light fixture and in a bedroom cable box. police found hundreds of secret recordings stored in his computer. one of the parents who made the discovery wants to warn others. >> oh, my gosh. is this guy recording this, is this on the internet. it is so scary what can go on out there. and that is basically what i want people to be aware of. >> a south bay jury found moore guilty earlier on possession of child porn. he was convicted of child molestation after he was seen performing an act in one of his videos. moore is scheduled to be sentenced in august, he could face up to 180 years in prison. >> in case you went to bed early, we can tell you giants fans celebrating late into the night after a game in the history books. matt cain doing something no other giant has done before. >> on the ground, from deep third. got him! and that's the perfect game.
4:37 am
>> that is a magical moment. cain leading the giants to a 10-0 victory over the astros, pitching that perfect game. the team, yeah, mobbing that mound. it's a mosh pit out there. the first time a perfect game in the giants' 130-year history and the 22nd time in major league baseball. after the game, as expected cain lost for words. >> it felt like the world series but crazier. every strike they were going nuts. it was really amazing. i never had that much excitement in every pitch, every swing. >> yeah. he had it going. and his wife up in the stands. you had to know she was nervous. she could not wait to get to her man after the game. >> can you imagine. >> a little sugar. nice work. you are the man. >> yes. that's my man. that's awesome.
4:38 am
>> no doubt a big time party on the field. a bigger party up in the stands. >> no doubt. the crowds were going wild. the giants faithful cheering on everyone. >> perfect game. i lost my voice. it was great. what can i say. >> we don't know what a perfect game is but my god, i was there. >> yeah. >> all the way from boise, idaho. go giants! >> a lot of happy faces. lots of cheering. fans say they are still living off the world series win and this gives them momentum. >> awesome. >> perhaps it was foretelling of cain's perfect day when he hit one out of the ballpark before the game. not a baseball, no, a golf ball. >> a great swing. >> now, that is a good swing. cain joined a few teammates to
4:39 am
hit balls into mccovey cove. only one ball, that's all he needed. >> look at that. he has the follow-through. everything going cain's way last night. good for him. >> love it. >> we're going to see a lot more long drives like that today as the 2012 u.s. open gets under way at the olympic club in a few hours. >> how about this. tiger woods, bubba watson, phil mickelson teeing off in hours. fans hoping to get a glimpse during the practice round. the golfing greats in their final practice tune-up. tiger woods, he's a popular guy, had to be escorted by two police officers. tournament play starts with the first group at 7:00 a.m. woods, mickelson and bubba watson at 7:33. and of course we'll be all over this. we'll cover the u.s. open throughout the morning and the weekend. marla tellez will be live coming in our next hour and we'll have
4:40 am
continuing coverage on air and of course on line at nbcbayarea.com. >> if you are lucky to have tickets to head out there today, what will the weather hold for us? want to check win meteorologist christina loren. >> yeah, you know, we're going to take a closer look at your forecast when it comes to the u.s. open. i can tell you fog will likely be a factor for the first part of the day. for the second half of the day, the winds will come into play. so a lot of interesting weather elements that will be a problem possibly for some of our sharp shooters. good morning tiger woods, phil mickelson. 53 in concord, 52 in san mateo, 57 in sunnyvale. throughout the day today, it's going to be warmer than yesterday and our air quality is starting to suffer with not as strong of an onshore flow. you want to keep that in mind but we're in the moderate range or good range across the bay area. for today, 82 degrees at noon, up to 88 at 4:00 p.m. you'll be headed out to san francisco, fog for the first part of the day.
4:41 am
it will burn off before noon. as we head through the weekend, temperatures soar. we have father's day around the corner so stay tuned, the forecast is coming up. here's mike, he's busy. >> we are all busy this morning because the entire east bay is cut off from the city and vice versa because of that fire we're ngtr iackin oakland off the 980/880 split. there is no b.a.r.t. service because the fire islo cseo c the oakland station. there is no b.a.r.t. service between the city and the oakla side. there is service, it's just not running through the transbay tube. this is of concern because we're talking about the u.s. open is going on as well. though this fire is here, over in oakland off of the freeway where there's a lot of activity, the flashing lights and the smoke off 980 and 880, this affects folks traveling on that system through the richmond line
4:42 am
or the pittsburg bay line to the colma station and the shuttle to the u.s. open. make alternate plans until we get another update hopefully with b.a.r.t. giving us an idea when it may be restored. that fire came close to the tracks. the colma b.a.r.t. station or candlestick are the routes you drive and take the shuttle to the u.s. open but no transit service right now. >> we don't know. >> exactly the problem. >> because of the big fire we have christie smith covering. we'll bring you the latest. stay with us this morning. still ahead, lance armstrong banned from competing as more doping charges are brought up against him. how he's responding. >> prosecutors using jerry sandusky's words against him. >> the musical makes its debut, where.io n
