dying down but boy, the damage is done for the morning. good morning. thanks for joining us. it is 5:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning. i'm jon kelley. we can tell you there is no b.a.r.t. service between the east bay and san francisco. this is all the result of a three-alarm fire at seventh and mandela, an apartment building under construction burning next to west oakland b.a.r.t. station where christie smith is joining us live giving us the details on a big time snarl there to shut down b.a.r.t. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters have finally stopped spraying water on the fire from where we're standing in the parking lot of the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. the building that was on fire is across the street. this is the senior center. when they got here it was a shell of a building, about four stories, on fire. you can see it's burned down to one. but it was a lot of radiant heat, big flames and you can see the b.a.r.t. station, the
5:01 am
tracks, are right across the street. that impacted the b.a.r.t. tracks. with us is jim, spokesman for b.a.r.t. let's see what he has to say because b.a.r.t. service is impacted. >> days, weeks, months until trains run? >> we don't know know. no service until further notice until we do a damage assessment. so we're still in the process of doing that, but again, if people need to get across the bay this morning, find a different way to do so. ac transit, ferries or a ride across the bay bridge with friends. >> jim, this is a major disruption. 370,000 people ride b.a.r.t. >> 370,000 people ride every week day, about 50,000 of those use b.a.r.t. to get across the bay in the morning so that's about the same amount that use the bay bridge. so this is a major hit to the transportation structure in san francisco and the east bay. >> what kind of a bus bridge are you able to set up or anything?
5:02 am
the question sb a bus bridge. >> we have not been able to establish the bus bridge. ac transit has transbay bus service, it's an excellent service, ferries. right now we're trying to get buses to get a bus bridge. my advice to people is find a different way f. they use b.a.r.t., find a different way this morning. >> jim, you said that people going from richmond to fremont or from sfo to embarcadero along the peninsula should be fine. >> the good news is that the richmond to fremont line is not affected. we're still running trains in east bay so all of the east bay stations are connected to each other, all the san francisco peninsula stations are connected to each other. we can't get across the bay which of course is our bread and butter in the morning commute. >> that was jim alison with b.a.r.t., major problem this morning if you want to use b.a.r.t. you can ride it at least in the east bay and san francisco. the problem is the transbay, the

crossing there, which is the popular one, it's out of service indefinitely. so we'll keep an eye on things and check back in with you in about 30 minutes. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we heard about the flames spreading to the neighboring areas. any b.a.r.t. station tracks affected by that? >> reporter: as far as he's telling us the main impact is here at the west oakland station. the covering of the third rail, the electric third rail, is burned this morning. and it's visible from the street. so not a lot of impact in terms of damage to other stations but here at west oakland, this is the station, the way that you cross into the city. you can't get through here. so this is a huge impact. >> thank you. we'll keep checking back with you. let's check on mike inouye and the roads out there. obviously affecting the commute to work. >> they don't have official

alternate plan. you can use ac transit through the b.a.r.t. system, on the maps, just off of 880 near the west oakland b.a.r.t. station we have that at mandela. between oakland and the san francisco side, meanwhile t roadways are looking pretty light now but the number jim gave us, the same number use the b.a.r.t. system to travel under the bay as over the bay bridge so this could potentially double the traffic on a thursday. that would be horrible for that route. we'll track the roads. right now they are fine. san mateo and the richmond bridges to the south and north respectively are your alternate as well. no transbay service butna what m said as well, between richmond and freount y're okay for tha wel as dublin w pleasanton stion.o the west oakland you're cut off under the water. on the wednesday wednesday side

5:31 am
doing the damage assessments, but i would say that i can confidently say b.a.r.t. service will be disrupted for a period of hours so people should find alternate ways to get across the bay this morning. >> so hours, not days? maybe a p.m. zmut >> i wouldn't want to go that far. stay in the here and now and realize because of this electrical damage that b.a.r.t. service will likely not resume across the bay for the rush hour in the morning. so we'll have to wait and see to get a more detailed picture of what's going on to talk about the afternoon commute and the days ahead. >> how many people does this affect, jim? >> there are 370,000 daily riders every week day that use b.a.r.t. and about 50,000 of those use b.a.r.t. to get across the bay in the morning during the morning rush hour, so as many as drive across the bay bridge. >> what information can you give us about bus bridges and helping
5:32 am
people this morning? >> ac transit normally runs transbay bus service. they have added buses from mcarthur, clark station and the 19th street station in oakland to get people across the bay, so our friends at ac transit are helping out. >> you can still ride b.a.r.t. in san francisco and the east bay, you can't cross. >> that's correct. all the east bay stations are connected to each other and the san francisco peninsula stations are connected to each other. but many people want to use b.a.r.t. to get from the east bay into san francisco and we just can't do that. >> thank you very much. i wanted to mention that i got an update from oakland firefighter and that they are still putting water on the hot spots. don't know how this fire started but it did damage some street signs and outbuildings. this is a big area, one city block. there was a lot of radiant heat. i spoke with a battalion chief
5:33 am
who tells me they are putting water on it. there is a gas line burning on the property. it's underground so they have pg&e out here trying to shut it off. that's one of the issues. they say if you could see inside, it looks like a pilot light that is just burning. they don't want to blow it out, then that would mean that gas would go so they don't consider it unsafe but there is a gas issue that they are dealing with now. they are going to work on this for several more hours, also while -- you can kind of see where the third rail cover is damaged so we have work going on up on the tracks and also here in the building. so major disruption this morning if you are trying to catch b.a.r.t. to the city. you want an alternate route. b.a.r.t. is not running there. live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay."
5:34 am
>> so far yim says it could take hours to fix. >> sorry. can you repeat. >> i was kind of surprised in the sense he was saying it would only take hours to potentially fix that. >> reporter: yeah. jim, can we ask you one question. you were saying that right now they are inspecting and there were 12 insulators that were damaged. can you describe what it is that those do and give us an estimate how long this might take to fix. >> the insulators are porcelain round kind of structures that you know, make the overall electrical system safe to operate. so it could be 12 to 24 of those are damaged. each one of those has to be replaced, so again, it looks like the morning rush hour is going to be without b.a.r.t. transbay service. >> and we're unclear yet about the evening commute. >> the evening commute, we'll have to give you an update later
5:35 am
on that. right now in the here and now, no b.a.r.t. service across the bay. we need to find out how much damage is involved and how soon we can replace the damaged equipment. >> thank you for talking with us. back to you guys. >> thank you. we're gathering information. mike inouye, a busy morning commute. >> yeah. you wouldn't know that looking at these sensors but the ripple effect here on the map, this is where christie is located away from the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. with the fire still cleaning up. there is smoke off of the freeway but not really enough, it will yot be a distraction for folks. the traffic will be heavily impacted. jim committed to the fact that basically the morning commute, consider that out for b.a.r.t. service. transbay between, forcing a lot
