were damaged. christie smith joins us, she has been talking to b.a.r.t. about what commuters should do. >> reporter: good morning. this is a major headache for commuter, people who ride b.a.r.t. from the east bay into the city in the morning still not running normally b.a.r.t. would have been running for 90 minutes now. it's shut down. b.a.r.t.'s jim alison is talking. we're going to listen in to what he has to say. >> until we can determine when it's safe to re-energize the system and provide electricity to the trains, there is no b.a.r.t. service across the bay right now. >> we can see there is some damage to the covering, the covering of the third rail from what i understand? >> there is a cover board that covers the third rail that provides power to the train. about a half mile of that is damaged but you can run trains with a damaged third rail. that's not the big issue. the big issue is 35, 40 insulators that hold up the third rail that are damaged.

and a question as to whether the power supply that goes to the third rail can be safely re-energi re-energized. it's a question of do you turn it on quickly and risk further damaging it or do we need to take more time and make sure that when we do turn the power back on, it's not going to fry something else. >> the morning commute is definitely in trouble. >> the morning rush hour for those of you who use b.a.r.t., find a different way to get across the bay. we're not going to have b.a.r.t. service for the morning rush hour. >> thank you very much, jim alison. i wanted to mention jim told us earlier if you do ride b.a.r.t. in the east bay or san francisco, it's running there, you just can't cross back and forth over the bay. what happened earlier is that there was an apartment fire, if we can move, you can see what's going on. they are still spraying water. this was a four-story building that was under construction, and

it caught fire. i spoke with firefighters, they say when they got here the flames were about 100 feet in the air. you can see that the building has essentially collapsed down to one story. they have another situation. what's happening with that is there is a gas line they say that is still running so they have pg&e out trying to put that off. there will be excavation work needed to do that. they don't have a cause on this and will be out here several more hours. because of the intensity of the fire, they are going to bring arson investigators in to take a close look. not calling it suspicious but want to keep their eye on. and serious problems with the morning commute. about a half mile of this coverboard is burned off. you can see the inspections started. they say hours at least until b.a.r.t. is up and running again. certainly you have to find another way to get into the

city. for more on that i'll turn it over to mike inouye. >> we're going to see that ripple effect. though folks don't take b.a.r.t. it's going to affect the roads. reaffirming what christie said and clarify for jim. there is no service taking you between the east bay and san francisco but travel in the east bay and on the peninsula side is okay so far. the west oakland station is the closed down where christie is reporting. we're waiting on reports after the inspection for third rail and the damage to insulators. a potential for sending 50,000 more commuters across. that's the number b.a.r.t. gave us. we're looking at a change. we have metering lights turned on, out of workly off of the workly curve. the impact not felt as heavily from 880 off the bend or off 24 and 580 through the area. we're watching for that.

a litter traffic flee might help out. you see a 19-minute drive out of the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. that effect is going to be felt over the next 90 minutes throat the approach to the bay bridge. normally b.a.r.t. would take am of that. >> thank you. more news we're following. this time from san francisco, one person dead, two wounded in an overnight shooting at a san francisco play ground. >> gun fire broke out at the silver terrace play ground at silver avenue and elmira street west of the 101280 interchange. so far police not releasing information about possible suspects or motive. >> a san francisco couple is under acrest charged with killing a man they say was pimping their daughter. calvin snead was found shot to

death. the chronicle reports that 37 and 38-year-old are charged with his murder. the couple claiming through their attorney they are innocent being held on $2 million bail. >> we can tell you the opening round of the u.s. open golf championship starts in just over an hour. some of the spotlights shining on one pairing with three of the biggest names in goufl. marla tellez is live with a preview of today's action going on. going to be a fun one. >> yes, it is. good morning, jon. a lot is at stake out here for the 112th u.s. open. the furs is about $8 million. compare that to $335. that was the prize money for the first u.s. open in 1895. i know it's all relative. what a difference. first tee time out here at 7:00 but no doubt the crowds will surround the ninth hole to watch

there. it's going to be real cool to watch it and watch that change. you can see temperatures are cool, we have a little bit of marine layer. not as thick so that means we're going to warm up seeing the sunshine come in. 52 in san francisco, you saw from the 5 picture a fair amount of fog seeing how far the ball traveled but the fog is going to burn off about two hours earlier. the reason because the winds will strengthen. where you get the red and the pink at the coast line is where we expect the bustiest. it's going to be excellent fewing. 63 at noon, out at the olympic club up to 65 degrees. windie windiest, pretty gusty out there. inland not too much wind. the temperatures warmer, 82 at noon, 88 at 4:00 p.m.

now we're updating breaking news out of oakland. no b.a.r.t. service between the east bay and san francisco. that is the result of a three-alarm fire that took place at seventh and mandela, an apartment building burst into flames. that is next to the west oakland b.a.r.t. station so again, that is shut down complete service. >> and a lot of people are having to rely on ac transit. we understand that they are adding extra buses. joining us by phone is claireis johnson to tell us how they are coping with this extra commuters out there. good morning. are you there, clarence?

okay. we lost that line there. but we do know that ac transit has added some lines to help with the morning commute at the macarthur station and 19th as people have to find alternate transportation to try to get across and not use the transbay tube. clarence, you're now on the phone with us? >> yes. >> there we go. so i mentioned that you added lines for ac transit at the macarthur and 19th street station. how are we looking so far? >> what we've done is we've diverted some of our transbay buss to those stations to pick up b.a.r.t. riders who would normally make their commute to san francisco. the idea is for them to board our buses there, use their b.a.r.t. tickets, and they will be honored for the fare. obviously we have to do all we can to pick up the slack. we do have some extra capacity on our buses during the morning

commute. probably not nearly enough at this point. so we are working to see what more needs to be done and what more we can do to alleviate some of this stress. >> we're taking a live look already as we're talking on the phone with you, clarence, people waiting in line. so relying on ac transit. because you have to divert some of the buss is that going to slow down other lines across the bay area? >> no. it shouldn't have any impact on any other lines. again, this is just an effort to accommodate the b.a.r.t. riders. >> we see the lines increasing but as you mentioned you will honor the b.a.r.t. tickets on ac transit. it really is mass commute working hand in hand this morning. so they say it could take a couple hours. are you already making plans for later in the day? >> yeah, we are right now trying to craft schedules and plans in the event that you know, the

evening commute is a problem as well. so we will have a better idea of what will be available later this morning. >> all right. looks like people need to pack their patience this morning. >> yes. that's true. but also be helpful as people can, stagger their commutes to try to alleviate some of the congestion. >> good idea f. folk cans work from home or try to take it easy out there. we know it's a busy morning for you as this news breaking about a fire in oakland that affected the third line of b.a.r.t. and now they have to repair those lines. the b.a.r.t. people telling us it could take several hours so the transbay tube shut down. the b.a.r.t. lines in the east bay and in san francisco are running. you cannot, however, use the transbay tube to get from oakland to san francisco. plus all of the people now

trying to find alternate transportation like these folks you see waiting in line for ac transit bus that have been called in. i guess find a friend, travel over the bay area. it's going to be a busy morning. >> crazy. we'll keep you posted. 6:18. we check in with meteorologist christina loren to find out -- orange. >> really nice day at least it's not too hot for them. we are watching that for the evening commute where you have a much higher volume of people taking b.a.r.t. we'll be on spop of that. smik making calls. 6:18. a live look at the golden gate bridge. socked in with fog but the good news is it's not going to last as long as yesterday. we're already starting to see the first tower becoming more visible. probably 10:00, mid morning when

we expect full on sunshine. a foggy start likely for the first part of the u.s. open. i did want to point out visibility is dropping off, even fairfield but this is where the fog is the thickest. you might find yours in fog, travel cautiously. by tomorrow a completely clear start. overnight an area of low pressure as high pressure moves back in the two systems are working against each other. we're in the middle so for us that means windy conditions. so a foggy start at the u.s. open will make way to a cindy second half of the day. where is going to come into play. catch it live here on nbc bay area. 85 in los gatos. not too not until saturday. triple digits expected. 99 inland.

89 by the bay is warm. 75 at the coast, a great beach day. father's day temperatures drop off a touch with a stronger on shore flow, then monday, tuesday into wednesday, starting to level off into mid-80s. here's mike. >> trying to get to work, as you heard from clarence johnson, ac transit will honor the the b.a.r.t. passes and rerouted some of the buses for some of that transbay service. the macarthur or 19th street station to take you over to san francisco, get that -- the line as you saw is getting long over there. it's forcing a lot of folks to the roadways. you see the im. we saw it before 6:00, about 5:15. we have a backup into emeryville. off of 580 back to 24 and 880 overcrossing, we have that

slowdown as well. a live look, show you 880 and traveling past the coliseum. you get closer to downtown, more crowded and the southbound side, going to pick up more volume as you use the san mateo bridge. this can potentially send double the traffic to the bay bridge or finding an alternate route. under the water on a sip cal day. >> mike, thank you a. start-up thinking about selling itself to microsoft for a billion. scott, that's with a "b." >> not bad for a company pointing out it has street fighter video game in is office and yammer, sort of a facebook for corporations to communicate quickly and this will not be his first billion dollar sale if the stalk true.

leapt onto b.a.r.t. track lines. the cover was burned so that is completely closing the transbay tube to get people from oakland to san francisco. >> that of course impacting big time the commute to work. right now people lining up in oakland. looking to get on the buses. we can tell you about 50,000 people travel across the bay to get to san francisco every day on b.a.r.t. but ac transit allowing those with b.a.r.t. tickets to ride for free this morning so as you line up out there be prepared, your ticket will be good to ride on the buses. those lines are starting as people prepare to get to work. speaking of that, your commute, mike inouye is here to talk about how that's snarled up. we'll give you ideas how to get around it. >> most of the schools got out for summer so some folks took off yesterday out of the area so the volume a little lighter but this is not helping because you saw those folks lined up. the potential for tens of

thousands more affected by this. so you want to get on at the macarthur or 19th station. and also affecting the flow of traffic, they turn the metering lights on, slowing approaching the bay bridge likely having more folks heading over the richmond/san rafael bridge still at speed as well as south on 880 to the san mateo bridge getting over the water and a lot of folks heading there for the giants game and of course the u.s. open. still use that alternate even getting to the golf tournament. >> it's a busy morning. they advice if you can stagger your trip in or possibly work from home a good idea. >> manage the madness. we'll update you on our breaking news. b.a.r.t. has closed service in and out, closed down the transbay tube after that big

it's breaking news we're following all morning long for you. b.a.r.t. service from the east bay is shut down into san francisco, transbay tube not working. it's the result of a massive three-alarm fire that happened near the tracks this morning. >> a building under construction at seventh and mandela going up in flames a few hours ago. this is next to the west oakland b.a.r.t. station where christie smith is joining us live. she has been at this all morning long, talking to b.a.r.t. about what commuters should try to do to get to work. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that building you're talking about is right next to the b.a.r.t. tracks. this is the building behind me and those are the b.a.r.t. tracks. you can see how close it was when firefighters arrived. they say these flames were about 100 feet in the area.

the building was four stories high. the fire is down to one story. this is affecting b.a.r.t. normally we'd be two hours into the commute but no trains are getting through. here is jim alison with b.a.r.t. good morning. what is it looking like in terms of the inspection and repair? >> well, we're in the process of doing that, one of the major things we want to make sure if we return power to the system that we don't exacerbate the damage that's occurred so. what they want to do is isolate a section of 38,000 volts wire and test that, make sure it's safe before they begin running power to the third rail. that's the major issue. looks like the morning commute for b.a.r.t. commuters, no transbay service, working on giving a better estimate as far as the afternoon commute but i would encourage people to find alternate ways across the bay.

>> what about bus bridges? >> ac transit has done a great job in picking up some of the b.a.r.t. riders so they ooded extra service. i can't speak to the specifics of that but there is a website people can check out. >> reporter: the morning commute is out and that affects a lot of people. >> the morning commute is out. no transbay b.a.r.t. service and the afternoon service, b.a.r.t.gov will have updates whether we can return service for the afternoon. so again, people should check out bard.gov. >> and firefighters still working on this fire this morning. we've seen them basically shooting water at it. they stopped that recently so telling us they have it knocked down. they are going to continue keeping an eye on it, also have -- they say this moved so quickly through here that they

want to give it a thorough look trying to figure out how it started. they say that is somewhat unusual. at this point, though, again, b.a.r.t. is out for the morning. that's going to affect quite a few people. you have to find another way i and out of the city. i'll turn it over to mick mick. >> b.a.r.t. service considered out if you travel between the east bay and san francisco. look at 880, we expect the volume to increase though right here past the coliseum the nimitz is looking pretty standard for a 6:33. that is what we're seeing on the sensors back to the maps, a look at the roadway approaching the metering lights on, the fire is where the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and christie smith are reporting and we see the slowdown through emeryville, off 580 and the caldecott tunnel. approaching the maze, also very slow.

the lighter volume, get surprised by the backup at the toll plaza and the maze. another option for you will be the ferry system over the water. for the rest of the commute you're okay. if you do not travel across the bay, antioch, seeing a lighter know as well as come. starting to kick in but the big issue is the service for b.a.r.t. it's cut off between oakland and san francisco. >> the b.a.r.t. situation will affect people seeing the the u.s. open golf championship. the first tee shot less than an hour away. golf fans feeling the energy, the buzz, over three of golf's top players. marla tellez is live out of the court, had a review of today's acti action. >> reporter: some of the sx

confronted with weather on the course. talking about fog early making way to windy conditions for the second half of the day. i want to start with this live picture over san francisco. two things. you can see we're dealing with half as fog. the cloud cover will clear about two hours earlier than yesterday. you can see from the shading here and the visibility map where the fog and low clouds are sticking around, san francisco, half moon bay, pacifica, you'll find foggy conditions the next few hours but clearing as the winds kick up. expected between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. you see where the red comes in. right at the coast the strongest winds. that's where we're seeing the the big golf match. the the tournament starts early, the guys teeing off at 7:00, 63 degrees at noon out there at the

>> a sex abuse trial of jerry sandusky in a critical phase. >> the prosecution is expected to finish its case as early as friday bringing more alleged victims to the stand. on day three, three told stories of sexual abuse. one broke down and wept on the stand. jurors heard a recorded interview sandusky did in november with nbc's bob costas. sandusky is expected to testify

we did have a little more cloud cover, it's clearing out so quickly. just about as clear there as we are in san jose. let's get to the temperatures this morning. they are nice and comfortable. crisp out there. 56 in sunnyvale. 53 in san mateo and 55 degrees to start out in santa cruz. the fog is mostly between san mateo and san francisco at this point. banked up against the coastal mountains so keep your eye out for that. you might find patches on the way up the peninsula. southwest wind at 8, clearing the fog out quickly. starting to pick up on the west-southwest at 6 miles per hour with gusts picking up throughout the day as high pressure builds in. we have an area of low pressure overnight so the two systems are working against each other. as a result we'll get these winds at the coast. likely coming into play for the big u.s. open. we'll have to really see how good these guys are, how straight their shots are you want can catch that here on nbc

bay area, no need to change the channel. 85 degrees in san jose, 88 in almaden valley. low 90, the upper 90s by saturday. mike's busy. >> the ride and the drive. the transbay service is cut off, east bay it's okay. peninsula is slow, b.a.r.t. okay. between the sides of the bay you cannot because of that fire that damaged potentially damaged i should say the third rail of the b.a.r.t. line at the west oakland station. ac transit an alternate. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza. let me show you, look at this. a lighter flow around the bay area but these cash lanes all backed up. over the 880, coming down the berkeley curve, also 580 and 24, look here in the middle. fast track lanes, commuters, they are not backed up so there is the different flow here.

>> yes. good morning. the question everyone wants to know this morning is when b.a.r.t. will reopen, when the tracks will be open, when the train will be running again in and out of the city. the best answer we're getting is that a knicks is going to take several hours. that is the electric third rail and the cover of it burned off this morning so the kmorning commute is a total wash. about 50,000 people cross in and out on b.a.r.t. a building under construction next to the tracks caught fire. 150-foot flames reduced it from four stories to 1, driving on 880 this morning. a huch slope you could see. the building is next to the tracks. this is a senior living facility that burned down. the electric third veil now

de-energized but about a half mile of the cover is damaged and b.a.r.t. is telling us 30 to 40 insulators they hold the third rail up so that will have to be repaired. i wanted to show you. they are still pouring water on this several hours after. i spoke with a firefighter telling me that they had some prefab wood walls and they keep burning. no trains moving to and krom. the last stop before you get to san francisco, i asked about the evening commute and jim at this point setty doesn't have an answer. they will keep commuters posted. >> we'll be doing the same. in fact, the commute nightmare affecting fans that are trying to get to the u.s. open starts today. we talk to one of them this
