greater bay area. we're having a lot of sunshine off the bat. a warmer day, only to increase your temperatures even more tomorrow. your forecast in moments. >> right now a taste of that sunshine mixed in and infused with a little fog. we'll let you know how that will blow out. a beautiful day on this friday, june 15th, "today in the bay." >> good morning. thank you for joining us. the time now is 6:00 on the nose. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. developing news that we're covering this morning, right now residents are returning to their apartments after a gas leak forced an overnight evacuation. it started when a car slammed into several units of an apartment complex in san jose. the car sheared off a gas meter. it was gapped in the past couple of hours but the evacuation

remained until just after 5:00 a.m. a woman there told us the whole thing was scary. she rushed to get out. >> they were telling everybody to get out and get as far away as we could so we just grabbed our kids and i through them in my van and drove down the street. to a safe place. >> that woman told us she could see the gas coming from the pipe. again, the evacuation order has been lifted and residents allowed back inside. >> we're also following developing news out of the east bay where b.a.r.t. trains are back on track. a massive fire shutting down the transbay tube for nearly 12 hours yesterday. christie smith is live in oakland where investigators are calling that fire a possible case of arson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they have a number of security guards that have secured the scene but we're 90 minutes into

this commute and trains are moving through the station. you can see the covering that burned on the electric third rail. this was 300 feet of area damaged here. b.a.r.t. saying they ran more tests overnight, federal agents are helping with that investigation into the fire that led to major commute meet down. this morning, a little late but had nothing to do with the repairs going on. again, more than 300 feet of area damaged here, not necessarily t necessarily the track. a fire at a senior living center that was under construction right next to the track, that caught fire about 2:00 a.m. thursday. the flames are huge, about 100 feet when firefighters arrived, moved fast making a four-story shell just one story. for b.a.r.t. the focus of getting these trains going again for thousands of people on short

noti notice. >> we did more testing and made sure everything is good. i think customers will find that part service will be like yesterday never happened so it will abvivid reminder. >> reporter: investigators say it's too early to say if this fire was intentionally set but it seems suspicious. the feds have been called in because they have more resources, dogs who can detect the use of accelerants. they are looking into witness accounts of a group of people seen near the site right before the fire started. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> the outage was a test of our secondary transportation system. buses made 117 extra trips during the shutdown. additional bus service provided connections to several part

stations and wisconsin service was free. ferry service also critical, from alameda, carried at least four times as many passengers as they usually do. the lines were long but did the job. all part of the contingency plan. >> three small children kidnapped by their father waking up safe and sound. an amber alert canceled after the three girls were dropped off at their grandmother's house yesterday. at about the same time police arrested their father. he threatened to hurt himself and the girls after a confrontation with his wife yesterday. he is being held on charges of parental abduction and violating a restraining order. >> round one of four in the history books. and the olympic club lived up to its reputation as one of the

degrees, comfortable in san jose. winds more of a factor today even though than what we saw yet. you want to hold onto your hat. it works out like this. if you are headed out there, winds pick up between about noon and 4:00 p.m. by 5:00 it's going to be gusty at the coast. we haven't had a gale warning. noon, the 80s. it's going to be hot inland but we're talking about 90s as of 4:00 p.m. high temperatures at 430, 5:00, as we head through next week, more forward 5, 5:30. we're not in summer yet but it's going to feel like summer. let you know if your city is one that will likely break the

of ann nutting's assets. the judge is also charged with 11 flan counts of perjury about lying about his income. >> two people burn in an explosion under arrest for murder. the two were trying to make hashish oil in their apartment. those exploded, damaged the building and ultimately killed 35-year-old paul. he had been pepping the couple make the oil. residents had to find new places to live. >> when you could see more bikes on crowded b.a.r.t. train. >> a move to a true democracy in turmoil. what's happening and why some call at coo. >> solyndra is back up. >> there through the clouds and the haze this morning in the

the city near homs. you can see a syrian helicopter firing down on the city. the helicopters are believed to be russian made. the use of helicopters in syria coming to the forefront yesterday after secretary of state hillary clinton accused russia of sending gun ships to damascus. >> the prosecution is expected to rest its case monday against jerry sandusky. no court expected today. the defense is expected to call its first witness early next week. last thursday, the last of eight young men accusing the former penn state football coach took the witness stand of sexual assault. they delivered the graphic allegations yet. sandusky is accused of abusing ten boys over several years. >> the testimony is heart wrenching. firefighters in colorado hoping to get help from mother nature, making progress on the wild fire, 15 miles from ft. collins.

flames have burned 52,000 acres. they jumped a highway forcing evacuations of another 80 people and a storm cell kicked up winds on thursday but they hope some rain today will help calm this down. >> you can get a little more cramped on b.a.r.t., launching a pilot program to let bicyclists board trains on friday. the test program will help decide if it should change its bike boarding policy. the pilot program doesn't change rules for monday through thursday and bicyclists are not allowed to board in the first car or on crowded trains. >> baseball news for you. the giants heading north to play the seattle marriagers. you can catch that game here on nbc bay area. starting at 7:00. ryan vogel song on the mound making a start for the giants. >> he turned around london to

next wednesday. 6:16, a live look, alcatraz. camera not shaking yet. likely the second half of the day when winds start to pick up. we're in the 50s to start and winds are calm now from novato down to san mateo, half moon bay not getting much of a sea breeze yet. as we head throughout the second half of the day we'll see a sea breeze at the coast, offshore flow for your inland cities so it's going to be interesting, the micro climates coming into play for today. turning hot tomorrow as high pressure regains control of our entire forecast. so, for today, highs are going to be a little on the comfortable side, oakland, san francisco, 72 in the city. 81 in oakland. however, down south and in the east bay, really, really warm and warming up even more so as we head through saturday. i want to point out what we expect at the u.s. open. temperatures are going to be mild but breezy. it's going to be a little more difficult for tiger woods and all of the pros today to keep

that ball straight down the fairway with a building breeze. 100 by saturday. on sunday, 96 degrees. cool you down a touch for dad's day. but you want to think cool places for father's day. the beach, the bay. as you wake up and make those plans, going to be a hot father's day. switching gears now, we don't have major accidents to tell you about. a stalled vehicle on 92 westbound as you approach the bay bridge toll plaza. no delays. we know there is a tow truck on the way. a look at the toll plaza, not too bad through the toll plaza where the metering lights are on, traffic is back up to speed. >> thanks for double duty. scott mcgrew says solyndra is for sale again. >> good morning. the first time the factory went on the block couldn't get a good price, apparently the market for failed solar energy plants is soft so it will go back up for sale today as the bankruptcy court takes new bids. if you are interested it cost

$300 million to build so that's probably a good starting price. of course it's solar powered. meanwhile, trouble for siri, the security company f-secure says businesses are taking a risk using siri. ibm forbids the voice assistant. and a texas man is suing apple because he says siri doesn't work as well in real life as it does in these commercials. do you know who this guy is. he had an idea in 2000 of taking a hard drive and turning it into a music player, he started working for apple and the rest is history. he is the father of the ipod, my guest this week on press here after neat press. also on sunday t greek goes back to the polls to vote after the first failed to form a government. it is possible the creeks will elect leaders who decide to leave the euro. no one knows how to do that.

the full forecast for this friday, june 15th. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks for joining us. 6:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. we're following developing news in san jose, crews have gapped a gas leak that forced residents out of their homes, this started about 1:30 this morning. fire crews telling us a car slammed into two buildings and apartment complex, ripped off a gas meter and that forced gas into the air for more than two hours. crews evacuated the complex while pg&e got in there to cap the leak. the order was lifted at about 5:00 this morning. >> an update to developing news in the east bay. b.a.r.t. is back in action this morning after a massive fire damaged the tracks in oakland and shut down service to san

francisco for 12 hours. commuters will leave, they won't have to live it again. swarms had to line up to get on buses in oakland. nearly 200,000 people use the transbay tube on any given day. for them yesterday was a nightmare. christie smith live at the west oakland station where investigators are looking into whether the fire that started all of the traffic trouble was intentionally set. good morning. >> reporter: we haven't seen investigators yet but i can tell you the building that burned is secured and there are security guards watching it. boy, commuters tell us they are glad to hear the sound of b.a.r.t. trains rolling again in and out of san francisco right next to the building that caught fire making a mess of the morning commute. trains started as usual today. a b.a.r.t. spokesman tells us they did testing after the trains started up again before

the evening commute yesterday. he says they made repairs to a 300-foot long area by the tracks, the good news, though, is that the concrete and the actual tracks were okay. the damage was mostly electrical. it broke out next to the site for a senior center. federal investigators are helping as it does look somewhat suspicious. for commuters relief after a real rough thursday. >> i thought it was playing tricks on me that the building was no longer there. i got on a transbay bus, was able to make it in. an hour and 15 minutes later than i normal hi would. >> reporter: are you keeping an eye on the progress and how do you feel about today? >> okay. i'm glad. i need make it into the city. i'm happy that it's running. >> reporter: the atf is helping out the oakland fire department

bringing in resources, dogs that can detect accelerant. we're told on the south side of the unfinished building it's believed where it started. they are looking into a number of witness reports that three people were seen near the site just before the fire started. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we're keeping an eye on protesters occupying president obama's campaign office in downtown oakland. they set up a live stream camera in the lobby of the obama for america office downtown, they walked into the office yesterday afternoon pretending to be campaign volunteers and never left. the campaign has not kicked them out. instead, it's hired a local security firm to keep an eye on things. they are undocumented immigrants and will not leave until the obama administration changes its deportation policy. >> the oakland police accident under fire for the way it

handled protests last october. a investigation called opd flawed because of inadequate staffing, poor planning and outdated policies. the report slams the department for an incident involving an iraq war veteran injured by a police projectile. not a single officer observed the war veteran go down, something called unsettling and unbelievable. >> it's a mass cover-up. the most disturbing part is not that it's wye one police officer but literally a dozen officers were there or more and none of them came forward and told the truth. >> the police department says it embraces the reports and promising to make improvements to public safety. >> talking a lot of golf this week. round one of the u.s. open saw a small amount of frustration.

mental game, i wrote fearless golf. what my guys are trying to do as simple as it sounds is make fearless swings at precise targets. being paired with tiger wood that makes but tentative. the more fearless the better we play. >> what separates a player like tiger. >> if you look at matt kuchar who has been a friend and a client of mine, he has a great demeanor for the game. you see how happy he is, he's never beating himself up. justin rose another example of that, he won four times in the last 20 months. >> phil mickelson did not have a good day. you could see the frustration. if you start off having a bad day and you let it get to you, how do you get out of that. >> you hit a bad shot so you

tomorrow triple-digit heat on the way. the warmest day of the year so far. as we transition toward summertime it's typical to start heating up but not like this. really unusual to see temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees above their average for this time of year. we'll be in record territory. no records today. 51 in livermore. winds play a factor as they are going to warm along the way negating the on shore influence off the pacific. the cool air not going to help us out. it will keep things nice along the coast but you'll heat up even in san francisco as we head through saturday, close to 90 degrees downtown tomorrow. it's going to be hot. 90s inland for today. then we peak. temperatures are going to soar by 10 degrees from today's highs. and then as we head through father's day sunday, cooling you off but nice and warm. so if you think barbecue, you want to think evening hours. warmest time of the day is about

5:00, sun doesn't even set until just before 9:00. so, you can have a barbecue between about 7:00 and 8:00, that's the best time inland. it's going to be hot. 89 degrees in san jose. 92 in livermore. 93 in fairfield. a lot of people in town for the u.s. open. it's going to be pretty nice. 84 degrees. 71 at the coast. saturday we warm up, you add additional 10 degrees to your highs and that's what we expect. cool you down a touch for sunday. and then next week kind of hovering in mid-80s monday through thursday, no rain in the future. and our air quality is suffering, becoming hazier as we head through this weekend into thursday of next week. so we'll be watching for spare the air days as we head through. we haven't had any so far. our mike inouye who we love has the day off. live to the bay bridge toll plaza. we don't have accidents to report at this point. i did want to point out that the metering lights are on.

in shambles. power poles sheared off, dented trucks, collapsed walls, after a garbage truck rolled backwards on a street. the truck crossed the driveway and mowed over a lawn and slammed into a home. waste management promise as full investigation. >> we'll be interviewing the driver, putting the truck through exams to determine if there was brake failure and we'll make a report. >> i was almost hyperventilating, now thinking lo back, i wouldn't be here. >> no one was injured during the crash including the driver. >> developing story we're following all morning. crews have been able to cap that gas leak in san jose that forced dozens of residents out of their
