big story this morning. massive flames at a housing project under construction in a bay view neighborhood. take a look. the calls came in just after 4:00 this morning. flames tearing through and burning it to the ground. crews were able to put it out an hour later. now, they are keeping an eye out for hot spots. fire investigators are there trying to figure out what sparked the flames. the good news is no one was hurt. now, back to the weather. the sizzling temperatures are causing a spare the air day today. bay area district managers recommend you avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day today when air quality is the unhealthiest. they are encouraging you to leave your car at home and give car pooling a shot, take public transit or walk. it will be hot out today for round three of the u.s. open at the olympic club in san

forward with information regarding her where abouts. a man is charges with killing her even though her body has not been found. one of the most notorious kidnapping cases in u.s. history. a group of masked men took a bus of school children hostage and hid them in. >> they were young. they had no ia the impact that would be on the families, you know, the kids themselves and their families. >> reporter: after spending 35 years behind bars for committing one of the most high profile kidnappings, this 57-year-old is about to go free. he, his older brother and a friend kidnapped 26 children and their bus driver in 1976. then buried them alive in a

livermore rock quarry. they planned a $5 million ransom. the children escaped before they could carry out their plan. >> 35 meters. nobody was hurt in the case. i think he's done his time. he's nohreat to society. >> repter: his oldest brother says the family is excited to welcome rick home. he says their 89-year-old mother is especially thankful. >> the fact that rick is out and, you know, he means the world to her and to us, also. >> reporter: most of the trio's victims are outraged he's getting released. a deputy d.a. in close touch with the victims says the victim's life has been life altering. many are haunted by the kidnapping. >> a life now with all the problems they have as a result of this.

they don't feel they have a fighting chance in life because they can't escape the horror of what this caused in their life. >> our family is sad it happened. rick and jim and their friend are remorseful. obviously, they wish they never did it. a local piece of property with a checkered past. this morning, local and federal agents are looking for clues of what caused the fire in oakland that shut down b.a.r.t. we have the details. >> reporter: the inferno that destroyed an oakland senior center under construction and damaged nearby b.a.r.t. tracks caused one of the biggest b.a.r.t. shutdowns in years. now, they are journeying with arson investigators, the fire department and police to figure out how it started. >> once the building is deemed safe, then the investigators

will be able to go inside. >> reporter: on monday, structural engineers will determine the safety of what's left of the building so investigators can comb through the sight. >> they will collect evidence that may be inside and start to analyze what they find to determine the cause. >> reporter: already, investigators are looking at surveillance video from b.a.r.t. security cameras and from one nearby business that shows the sight at the time of the fire. the footage may help to verify the count of a security guard that ran from the sight after being harassed by three young men before the building went up in flames. nancy runs a preschool nearby. she remembers when the building belonged to a yeast factory. neighbors complained about the air pollution and worked together to shut it down. >> the pollution was horrible. you step out of your front porch and smell something that smelled

like formaldehyde. >> reporter: they hope to rebuild at the same sight. they say they didn't like the idea of having seniors live so close to the train tracks in the first place. >> who would want their grandmother living this close to the west b.a.r.t. station? we are not only talking the noise level but what if we had an earthquake? a train got derailed and fell on to the structure. >> as to what will happen to the sight, it remains unclear. it's unclear if the developer has money to rebuild. some think the sight should be turned into a parking garage. much more ahead on the bay. the bay area is set for a spike in the case of the west nile virus this summer. what's behind the expected surge. plus, he is man's best friend and inspiration. overcome big obstacles in his 'r life and is on a mission to help others.

welcome back. the bay area is bracing for an outbreak of the west nile virus this summer. the expected boom is due to an unusually warm winter and a regulation hampering controlling the mosquitoe population. they say they have seen eight times as many cases of west nile in dead birds and 20 times in mosquitos compared to last year. west nile was detected in 15 contra costa counties. that federal regulation requires permitting procedures to spray pesticides on water supplies. voters in egypt are choosing a new leader. it will produce the first president since ousting mubarak.

good morning, anthony. >> good morning. winds will gust up to 40 miles per hour across the north bay and will spread into san francisco. we are talking a breezy afternoon. also, a little bit of a dangerous air quality day mixed in with hot temperatures and low humidity and very strong winds. we are talking a red flag warning across the mountains. that means burning is not advised. if you are a camper or a smoker, stay away from the flames today because any of those could ignite the grass around and the hills are brown. so, let's try to keep everybody safe today. if you are one of those folk that is suffer from asthma, here is the air quality forecast. we are talking the central bay, the east bay and even the south bay dealing with unhealthy air quality today. by the afternoon hours come in and replenish yourself with plenty of water.

rollens road in burling game. 25 units have smoke or water damage. red cross is helping those who were forced out. surveillance footage may hold clues to what caused the massive fire that shut down b.a.r.t. service earlier this week. investigators are looking at b.a.r.t. security cameras that show the unfinished senior housing complex. a guard ran after being harassed by three young men before the building went up in flames. agents are joining with arson investigators from the oakland fire department to figure out how the fire was started. if you are in the north bay, do not be alarmed if firefighters are jumping to action. they are doing countywide training at a school. it is scheduled for demolition.

all right. welcome back here on this saturdays morning, well into june. boy, does it feel like summer. we have the unofficial start of summer from memorial day. we are welcoming that extreme heat. good morning. welcome to the nbc bay area weather center. because of the extreme heat and dry air-conditions, we are talking a red flag effect until 9:00 this evening. if you are a camper or smoker, stay away from the flames because everything is so dry. it's been since april 13th since we had a significant rainfall. it's over two months. take it easy out there. spare the air quality. it's unhealthy across the bay.

looking at unhealthy air. the south central bay is not too bad. it's 57 in santa rosa now. concord at 61. livermore well on the way to setting a record. 65, 64 in sunnyvale. morning mild and hazy conditions. later on this afternoon, record heat not only for one or two cities, but the potential for a few cities in the east bay, north bay and south bay. we could set a few records. this last time it's been this warm for so many of us was 2006. you may remember that if you were in the area. i was not. this is new to me. we have the almanac for all that. ahead, slightly cooler conditions. instead of the extreme heat, more comfortable conditions. we are still in the 80s, but not uncomfortable. the storm track is well to the north. the area of high pressure positions right across

california. we have the luxury of enjoying warm weather today. the air quality is going to be one of those issues because of the dry northeasterly wind blowing off the mountains. triple digit heat from valet know, livermore and morganville. you are in triple digits. as i mentioned earlier, in 2006, we had a heat streak. this is when we had a few records set. livermore, 113. this was back in the 1960 s. concord, san jose and santa cruz set records. this is a day we break new records and go down into the history books. 84 in santa cruz. 97 and 103 in concord. if you are making plans at the beaches this afternoon, winds up to 15 miles per hour. close to 80 there. near half-moon bay, nice waves if you have yet to get out there and check them out.

they are from the academy of art in san francisco. tell us about the big undertaking. what do we have here? >> this is a contest for a future lunar rover. the idea here is that each of these sections is a distinct module that could go off on its own to scout areas. currently, the rovers they use are limited to the terrain they can cover. when it all joins together, now it can surmount large obstacles. >> it's a slender version of the current one? >> yeah. i mean it's modular. you can combine multiple units, which is something new. yeah, it uses soft robotic connections, flexible connections. it's looking at what are the developing technologies now and how might they be applied in the future.

>> you are both graduate students at the art academy. i was asking you about things you design for, industrial design. i bet you never thought you would be working with nasa. how did it come about? >> it's exciting. i never thought i'm going to design rover to go into space. it's a challenge to change your mind to design the project for people who interact. it's pretty cool. >> yeah. >> can you expand on that a little bit about the concept of being able to control it? >> yeah. so, another part of what we worked on is the interface. so, how do astronauts control the rovers? so, some of us are actually continuing over the summer to work with nasa on developing an interface to implement next

welcome back. this guy is not afraid of heights. training, concentration and prayer is what a daredevil says helped him walk a tight rope across niagara falls. nick walenda made the walk on a two inch round cable. until then, no one ever made the trip across the falls. he had a thether, but didn't need it. he made it on his own. >> it was awesome. this guy is out of his mind. i'm proud of him. i cried. he's cool. >> it's nerve-racking worried about if he's going to make it. >> he plans to go across the grand canyon next. >> i don't know if i could watch it live. it's too much. >> he is one crazy man. a brief note, we don't have a 5:00 at 6:00 tonight. we'll have u.s. open coverage
