so with the assistance of the diy network, i actually helped him get a place where he can relax and be himself. it is called the man cave. i helped build one for him. and in the process, i set the bar so high that i not only never have to get him a father's day present again, but couple of my peers might be a little jealous. >> you helped build it? you said you you said you helped -- >> he put build in air quotes. i was there to delegate and monitor. >> and we'll take a look at what happened. that's pretty cool. first, let's get more on the morning's headlines. greeks are voting in an election today that has the whole world watch. let's get more from michelle caruso cabrera in athens. >> tom, good morning. there are two leading candidates here in greece and the poll numbers show they are neck and neck to be the next prime minister. now, both candidates have campaigned on the idea that they want greece to stay in the euro.
6:03 am
however, one of them has said he wants to cancel or renegotiate the bailout. others say a vote for him is a vote to lead the euro. economists say if that happens, they fear the financial ripple effects will be felt all over the world even in the united states. tom, we're going to know the results sometime in the afternoon in the united states. back to you. >> okay, michelle, thank you so much. staying overseas now, escalating violence in syria has forced u.n. observers to suspended operations. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engle is monitoring the situation from cairo. any hope the international peace plan survives? >> the international peace plan right now is frozen. the u.n. monitors say because their access has been denied, because when they go out on missions they've been attacked by mobs, they've been shot at by syrian forces, they declared that it was too dangerous for
6:04 am
them to go out and a suspended all operation. the syrian opposition is accusing the united nations of courtess. so right now, it's frozen. but it could get a major jump start, depending on a meeting tomorrow between president barack obama and vladimir putin if russia backs this peace initiative, which so far it has not been backing. it has been backing the syrian government. things could dramatically change, tom. >> richard engle live from cairo. thank you so much. one person is dead and three others hurt after the roof of an joet outdoor stage collapsed hours before a concert in toronto. crew members were setting up the stage last night when it came crashing down. the cause is still under investigation. back here in the states, this amazing video shows a massive fire at two under construction apartment buildings in indianapolis. no one was hurt, but the inferno was so intense that construction materials across the street ignited a nearby church and caught fire. tim tebow, the new york jets

backup quarterback appears at qualcomm stadium today as a special guest for a father's day event. tebow, a deeply religious christian will deliver a sermon encouraging men to live, love and lead. tens of thousands of people are expected to attend 37. and swimming in this pool might take courage, but you'll get an amazing view of a skyline. the bottom is built with transparent materials so you can see all the way to the street below. one swimmer says it feels like he was flying. that's the news. now back to jenna, tamron and michelle. jenna, there's another place you can sport that cool swimming cap. >> yes. i just need to learn to swim. >> that was amazing. >> i love that. >> amazing in what way, scary? >> i have to be there and swim every stroke. she would be there and the rest of us would watch from below. >> that is a great idea. >> that's hard just looking at
6:06 am
that. you looked awesome in that hat yesterday, by the way. >> very kind. michelle grossman, do not be jealous of a bathing cap that i wore. i'm jealous that she is so brave and you have the forecast. >> first, we want to show you some video. this is amazing video out of arizona. we are looking at a duststorm. this happened at 5:30 in phoenix. this is the kind of storm that literally takes day into nighttime and reduced visibility down to a quarter mile. that was at the airport and actually was responsible for four accidents in that area. another weather story today, we are looking at the chance for severe weather, so not a lot of father's day celebrations tonight. we are looking at a slight risk for severe storms. we're looking at damaging hail. we could see hail the se of baseballs. that's no fun. we're looking at scattered showers in the ohio valley. another big story, this is what you need to wear. you need to wear a bathing cap. that's about it. in the southwest, we are seeing triple digit heat, sweating
6:07 am
there. in the northeast, we're we're seeing signs of change in our bay area forecast. low clouds back on the coast and a sea breeze picking up in san francisco. our temperatures inland. it's a warm start to the day. even near 70 still around livermore. a stronger sea breeze will eventually lead to cooling. especially for the coast, inner bay and north bay today still hot around livermore and everybody cools off big time for tomorrow and then we warm up approaching the middle part of the week. >> tamron. >> michelle, that you can. four mountain climbers are presumed dead today after an avalanche swept them away on alaska's mt. mckinley. >> standing more than 20,000 feet, mt. mckinley is the highest peak in north america. and the area where the avalanche hit was not known to be especially dangerous. but the climbers just appeared
6:08 am
to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. it was in the early hours of thursday morning. on mt. mckinley's most popular trail. five climbers visiting from japan tethered together by a single rope. just below 12,000 feet when they were swept downhill by an avalanche. when the ground settled, only one climber was alive, saved when a part of the rope he was holding broke loose, swinging him into a crevice. this photo shows the aftermath of the massive slide. what looks like a tiny trench is actually that 60-foot deep area where the 69-year-old man was protected. when he emerged, he couldn't find his friends and had to make a 14-hour climb down another 4,000 feet by himself to summon help. the national parks service is presuming the four others are dead, even as more than 400 rescuers battle know and wind to try and find their bodies. the only sign of them so far,
6:09 am
this lone red flag, a reminder that the lure of nature can come with a price. now, the ages of those climbers ranges from 50 to 64 and so far their pictures have not been released. >> veronica de la cruz, thank you very much. here is jen noo. now to politics. mitt romney is back on the road today taking his bus tour to the crucial battleground state of ohio. the presidential challenger is trying to convince americans that he's more in up the with the economy than president obama is. nbc's peter alexander has more in brunswick, ohio. good morning. >> good morning to you. happy father's day. mitt romney will be enjoying his father's day here in brunswick, ohio, at a pancake breakfast, weather permitting. it was pouring just moment ago. he'll be joined by his wife, two of his sons and a handful of his grandkids who frankly we saw running around the hotel last night. he's facing a unique challenge in this state. here in ohio, the economy is
6:10 am
steadily improving and the unemployment rate is better than the national average. taking his case to conservative voters in rural pennsylvania, mitt romney turned a simple slip of the tongue into a sharp tongued attack on the president. >> he, upon becoming elected governor -- excuse me, president last time -- governor might have been a better job for him to have started with. >> during one stop saturday on his every town counts tour, romney played a light hearted prank on the traveling press, joking that he had erased our hard drives. but the democrats weren't laughing, slamming romney for an incident before he left office as massachusetts governor when romney's top aides reportedly erased his administration's e-mails from the server. day two also took a detour. the campaign bypass a scheduled stop at a wawa convenience store where a crowd of democrats led by pennsylvania governor ed
6:11 am
rendell, also an nbc political analyst were protesting. instead, romney pulled over at another wawa. and dismissed the detour. >> i understand i have a surrogate over there already, so we decided to come to a different place. my surrogate is former governor rendell who said i could win pennsylvania. >> republicans pounced on rendell after the obama supporter's recent critiques of the parent's past experience. >> i think the president was hurt by being a legislator only. >> after ordering a hoagie inside, romney told reporters how impressed he was by the ingenuity of the private sector. >> impressive keypad, you touch this, touch this, touch this, go pay the cashier, there's your sandwich. it's amazing. >> and while today, of course, is father's day, ann romney is a proud mother. her horse yesterday qualified to to be a part of the u.s. olympic
6:12 am
team. she was at the trial in new jersey. here is a trial that she tweeted out of her enjoying that moment. romney said, we are proud of jan, that is the rider, and team usa. now let us bring home the gold. the romneys are hoping to spend some of their summer at the olympic games in london. >> peter, thank you very much. david gregory is moderator "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> so the campaign trail is in full effect. mitt romney will be at an event today with john boehner. delicate relationship between the two. romney wants a good relationship with john boehner, but wants to distance himself a little bit. how does he walk the line between the two? >> you're right. he wants the support of boehner, particularly in the state where he has to drive out conservative votes, particularly in the southern part of ohio. but the president is a biggest
6:13 am
here is to combine romney's view of the economy and taxes and the budget deficit with an unpopular republican congress. and really marry the two of them and say that this is just old line thinking. so that is where he does have to be important. but the romney campaign is concerned about ohio for the reasons that peter laid out. the economy is doing better. the auto bailout has had an impact, particularly in the northeastern part of the state. all of that can help them run a pretty effective campaign in the state. >> and the economy is his core and basically his sole focus as we approach the election here. but he did make some interesting comments yesterday regarding president obama's foreign policy. he said whatever obama did in israel, i would have done the opposite. how significant are those comments? >> i think there, what you're seeing romney do is trying to target jewish votes in a state like florida, where they think they can make up a little bit of room because of a deteriorating relationship between netanyahu and obama. you've seen romney talk about
6:14 am
his old friend, netanyahu. so i think a lot of these statements are more targeted to particular voting groups in particular states that are going to be very important. >> meanwhile, president obama and his family are in chicago weekend for a wedding. this comes on the heels of president obama's new immigration policy. and where are americans falling on this? how are the critics forming and how are they supporting him? >> well, i think we're going to have to wait a little while and see exactly how that continues to develop. what's clear is this is another attempt to target a key voting group. the president wanted to break a stalemate over immigration and particularly what to do with children over illegal immigrants. let's be honest, he also wanted to put mitt romney on the defensive. romney has a lot of ground to make up if he's going to compete for hispanic voters. the president wanted to jam him up a little bit, put him on the spot about the fact that he has not supported a similar measure. the senator from florida has
6:15 am
supported something very similar to what the president has done. >> and, david, what's coming up today on "meet the press." we'll talk about it all with david plouffe and arizona senat senator. >> thank you very much. we're seeing a different side of kate duchess of cambridge today. annabel has more from london. >> hi, tamron. kate put on her country clothes and headed out of town this morning on a charity visit. she went to meet a group of elementary school kids spending the weekend at a center where they get to build shelters and experience the great outdoors. many of them coming from inner london have never been out of the city before. of course, today's activities were a contrast to what she was up to just 24 hours ago. now, that was trooping the color, the queen's official birthday celebration. it's a full on military parade with marching bands, horses and
6:16 am
over 1 1/2,000 soldiers. it whack tookly good to see prince phillip. he was taken ill during the queen's diamond jubilee seg bragz and no doubt it was reassuring to the queen to have him back on her side. she certainly seemed to be relaxed and happy that he was back at her side for this big event. >> also, an ma bell, prince william at a big event this week. he turns 30 on thursday. do we know how the royals plan to celebrate another big occasion? >> that's right. another big occasion. kate herself has already turned 30. they're saying they're going to do something quiet. this couple, they're not wild. they're not like prince harry. they leave the big parties to him. he's the one that goes out at nightclubs and has photos of him
6:17 am
doing something quiet. last friday night, he stayed in to watch the soccer. england had a big match in the euro 2012 championship. william stayed home to watch the soccer. kate went out to the theater with another group of kids with another charity she supports. so don't expect her and any pictures of them having a wild night out and a wild night of sell braegz. it's not going to happen. >> that's what happened when you turn 30. things slow down a little bit. still ahead here on "today" the sexual abuse trial of former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky. our town had a "brilliant" idea. support team usa and show our olympic spirit right in our own backyard. so we combined our citi thankyou points to make it happen. tom chipped in 10,000 points. karen kicked in 20,000. and by pooling more thankyou points from folks all over town, we were able to watch team usa...
