that i hope this never ends ♪ [ female announcer ] nature valley granola bars, nature at its most delicious. good morning. i'm kris sanchez. a bay area family dealing with a devastating loss. plus, tee time is just a few hours away for the final round of the u.s. open. we have highlights on that. plus, the latest on tiger woods' standing. and it was hot, hot, hot. how did you deal with the steamy temperature this weekend? we'll hear from people around the bay, including some who say we have nothing to complain about. this is "today in the bay." and looking live at oakland.

a little east bay vista there. a little haze, too. what's that about? let's ask rob. i'm kris sanchez. thanks for joining us on father's day. happy father daes day. if you get a new grill for a present, you probably don't want to use it. >> it's going to be warm but the sea breeze is picking up, leading to cooling for peninsula coast and north bay. livermore, 70 to start off your morning. 60 degrees in san jose. the east bay and parts of the south bay will still see warm temperatures. not as bad as yesterday, but 80s and 90s inland. futurecast watching the low clouds and fog. we'll see how this impacts the u.s. open for this afternoon because after lunchtime, after the sunny breaks it looks like we'll see the clouds surge inland. a mist and cooler day fort coast. as you can see with our day planner forecast, 80s and 90s inland but the coast and the inner bay will see a 10 to 15

degree drop today and everybody cools off another 10 to 15 more degrees as we head into monday. we'll talk about much cooler weather coming up, getting back to the work week. >> i'm thinking no barbecue smoke for the dad. sus sushi, nice and cold. >> there you go. in news this morning, a family is mourning the accidental drowning of a toddler who managed to wander away from her pen inlieu sa home. a 3-year-old wandered away from her home in san mateo and fell into the foster city lagoon. a neighbor found her in the water south of the san mateo bridge near highway 101. neighbors held a candlelight vigil for the little child. officers arrived shortly after the parents called 911 yesterday afternoon trying to find her, and joined with neighbors in searching for the little girl. when they found her, officers and paramedics performed cpr but were unable to revive her. >> she evidently went to the

water and fell in. i don't know if she hit her head or what, but she floated down here. and one of oregon residents found her. very emotional about the whole thing and it's very hard. >> we're told by some of the neighbors that the girl who drowned is a fraternal twin and she leaves behind a 3-year-old brother. her identity has not yet been released. san mateo police are calling this an accidental death. the heat did not deter volunteers from the latest search for clues in the disappearance of sierra lamar, who was last seen leighing her home. her family is offering a reward leading to her whereabouts or includes to her whereabouts. which is now 35,000. >> when you're out there searching, you don't even really think about the heat or your surroundings. all you're doing is searching.

all that leaves out the window there. >> now, that volunteer did go on to say that the folks in charge did make sure everyone stayed hydrated yesterday. prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old morgan hill man with killing sierra lamar. he's scheduled to enter a plea july 31st. this morning investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of a massive fire at a construction site in san francisco. firefighters responded to reports of large flames coming from a four-story apartment building under construction in the bayview around 4 p.m. yesterday morning. the flames destroyed the structure. it took crewses about an hour to control it. and a warning for homeowners in one east bay city about a telephone scam. alameda municipal power says someone has been targeting its customers last week asking for credit card information. they say the caller would say the customer's bill was past due and that services would be cut off unless payment was received. alameda municipal power has a policy of never asking for

credit card information over the phone. it will be a perfect day for golf for the final round at olympic club in san francisco. the u.s. open gets under way in just a couple of hours. along the coast. and tens of thousands of people made the trek yesterday for round three. many of them turned out to see tiger woods, who tried to remain at the top of the leaderboard, but it didn't go quite as he planned. coming up later in the newscast, we'll show you how tiger did and we'll show you the shot of the week. an impressive hole-in-one. as rob mentioned, today we'll get some relief from that sizzling hot temperature we experienced yesterday. some of the hottest spots were in the east bay. many hotter than palm springs. most people found ways to cope. >> reporter: at water world in concord, more than 5,000 people filled the park making it the water park's busiest day of the year. >> it's a saturday and we have

103-degree temperatures on we're double what we were expecting for a normal saturday here at the park. >> get some sun, enjoy some water, come out with family and have a good weekend. >> reporter: and at century theaters in walnut creek plenty spent the day inside a well air conditioned cinema. >> we're getting a cold drink and a movie. >> reporter: we ran into one person who didn't think the heat was overly oppressive. >> been on the east coast when it's humid and it's 90-something and it feels ten times warmer than this, so i'm not complaining. >> reporter: the heat takes its toll on the elderly and very young and those with respiratory problems. >> it's so hot you can't even breathe. >> staying hydrated. i finally decided to take my mom's advice. >> and that was diane dwyer reporting. checked with emergency dispatch

and they said they have not had an increase in calls for heat-related illnesses. and temperature should be comfortable in san francisco today for the celebration of the african-american community. the city is hosting the 62nd annual junetenth festival and will begin at 11:00 this morning. it will be live music, arts and crafts and a health fair. it commemorates the end of slavery. some bay area fathers will not be sitting around home but hitting the pavement. if you're looking at your tv right now, you're seeing live pictures of this year's pleasantton rotary father's day run. it's scheduled to begin in less than an hour. it helps benefit local high school scholarship programs and it will be the 19th year this city has held the event. >> always thinking of the kids. much more ahead, coming up, critical elections overseas,

looking live, it is going to be hot once again day. not as hot as yesterday. if you're making plans with dad today, figure out a way to stay school. a raging fire burning in greece. you can see it on a hillside surrounded by homes. the flames have already destroyed several houses south of athens. investigators say the fire began yesterday afternoon. high winds are rekindling the flames this morning and three new fronts broke out. three firefighters were also injured in that fire fight. also in greece, a critical election is happening and they're voting in a new government. this is the second election in just six weeks.

in the last one no simple party won enough seats to form a fiction l functioning government. the election could decide the country's future in the eurozone. many fear a victory by parties that have vowed to cancel the country's international bailout agreements and a austerity measures could see greece forced out of the euro. in egypt they're electing their first president since overthrowing hosni mubarak. it's the last day in the presidential runoffs. president barack obama is said to fly to mexico for the group of 20 economic summit. it will give an opportunity for president obama and russian president vladimir putin to meet. president obama is looking for russia to help u.s. foreign policy goals in the middle east. meantime, mexican president calderon led the inaugural ceremony yesterday. the leaders of the world's major

economies are meeting. a main topic of discussion will be relief for greece and other countries that are hard hit by the financial crisis. today hot, windy weather is making it tough for firefighters battling a huge wildfire in the northern part of the state. the wildfire burning in colorado has now destroyed 181 homes. that is more than any other fire in that state's history. the near addition the area near ft. collins has been blackened about 85 square miles of it, which is almost twice the size of san francisco. one woman is believed to have been killed by that fire. hundreds of firefighters are working on this fire, which is only about 45% contained. much more ahead on "today in the bay," still to come, a rescue mission how volunteers saved a critically endangered fish from certain death. a live look outside shows you the reason why we'll see cooling on the coast and around

y with more choices and fewer calories, good morning and happy father's day. lots of father's are going to be spending their time lacing up their sneakers, raising monday for high school kids. it's part of the rotary and all of the great work they do. rob has a look at the forecast. you have to wonder how hot it's going to be, how early for those poor folks running. >> yeah. i think we're really going to see temperature around pleasantton soar into the 90s by around noon and then cool agz we head toward the evening. speak of cooling, that's going to happen as we wrap up the u.s. open on nbc bay area. that's a nice father's day present, to let dad watch the end of the u.s. open. what you'll notice are temperatures cooling down. 50s and maybe some low 60s

around lunchtime but those temperature will be cooling off as we go through the afternoon. and the low clouds are going to be streaming back in, too. as we look at some temperature around the bay area, you can see we're in the 50s and 60s. actually near 70 out by livermore as the sea breeze continues to pick up. we will see places like fairfield and north bay cooling down. the areas out toward trivalley still toasty. inland, still some 80s and 90s and trending cooler for everybody on monday and then we rebound as we head toward the middle part of the week. good news with former hurricane c carlotta, moved inland. just a tropical low but dumping a lot of rain. if your travel plans are in western mexico, this storm no longer an issue but the rains will continue to linger in western mexico. satellite here. we'll be watching the low clouds

and southerly surge washing toward the bay area today. that's going to lead to cooling and eventually we'll see those low clouds surging inland toward the evening. late in the day around the u.s. open, i think you'll see the low clouds and a much cooler finish to the tournament and low clouds pushing into the inner bay heading into the evening tonight. you'll see a lot of low clouds by the monday morning commute. hour by hour, still those 90s showing up inland around midday and as we head toward the evening you can see the punch of the cooler air, then cooling down heading into monday. south bay, 80s to low 90s around places south of san jose. some of the warmer locations, pleasantton and livermore. north bay and coast, you'll see a temperature drop 10 to 15 degrees today, and everybody cools off tomorrow. and for the middle part of the week our temperatures climb up briefly. summer kicks in officially at 4:09 in the afternoon on wednesday. next weekend could be cooler.

we'll see a stronger sea breeze and comfortable temperature. >> if you like the heat -- >> one more day of it. >> stay inside. >> we don't have central air, so i have mixed feelings. thanks, rob. arizona welcomed in monsoon season with wet weather in some parts and dust and hot temperatures in others. this is the own when arizona sees more rain and thunderstorms and it started right on time. at least in the southeastern part of the state. thunderstorms, hail, wind and rain hit tucson hard. it was the first severe storm of the monsoon season. in phoenix people were still dealing with dust storms and a high temperature of 106. the bay area is blessed with beautiful and abundant nature but occasionally nature needs help. today joe shows us an operation under way to save an endangered fish. >> we're out here res skiing

steel head trout. this stream here in the next few weeks will go completely dry. >> reporter: tiny creek in west marin county. a rescue mission of sorts. >> koho salmon in central california are on the verge of extincti extinction. we're catching these fish before they die from lack of water and moving them to moving water downstream. >> reporter: a team of biologists and volunteers from the group's spawn ankle deep in the knee-high stream. >> this year we only had about 100 fish come up and spawn. that's down from thousands and thousands. >> i caught one! >> so, this is like the first time i ever caught a real fish. granted they were this big and in nets. >> looks like a steel head 35 to 40. >> we'll weigh and measure them. if they're big and fat, they're healthy. if they're skinny, we know there's problems. >> steel head 30 to 35. i am identifying the fish to

species based on some diagnostic features. we will compile this data, get a picture of how big they're growing. >> reporter: the watershed in west marin is one of the only places where endangered koho return to spawn. >> my grandkids have been fathering up for years. >> reporter: this particular stretch runs through lois hampton's yard. >> well, we've been saving these little fish ever since i've lived here since 1970. >> we do know we've rescued 1 -- over 1,000 fish since we began this program in 19999. >> reporter: with buckets filled with tiny koho and threatened steel head trout, the researchers head to a larger, flowing stream nearby. if nature is on their side, the fish will return to this same area to begin the delicate struggle for life once again. >> it feels great to save a species from certain death and give them another chance of

the final round of the u.s. open begins in less than two hours. san francisco's olympic club is proving to be a tough match for even the best players in the world. tens of thousands of golf fans made their way to the course to watch saturday's round three action. tiger woods began the day tied for second place, but he struggled. he misses this short putt. woods is now in 14th place. shot of the day petersen on the 13th hole, the second hole-in-one ever at olympic club in the u.s. open history.

graham mcdowell made the most of heir opportunities making a fine approach shot, tied for first place now with jim furyk who drops this birdie attempt to keep pace. >> i probably won't try to look at the leaderboard too much. i'll get a feel for how things are going scorewise but it will be more about playing the golf course rather than trying to play, you know, graham or trying to play the guys trying to hunt us down. >> you can watch today's final round of the u.s. open championship right here on nbc bay area. coverage begins at noon. for decades men have been golfing as a hobby and a way to do business but more and more women are working the fareways as well. kimberly has more from the olympic club in san francisco. >> reporter: though the 2012 u.s. open celebrates the driving and putting achievements of male athletes like tiger woods and phil mickelson. >> i do have aspirations. >> reporter: it also draw ace lot of women. >> it's easy to watch, easy to

understand. i find it very unforgiving. you can really feel the empathy with the players, their frustration. >> reporter: what was once a male dominated sport has been gaining ground among ladies, especially over the last few decades as companies try to keep, gearing their clubs and clothing toward women. >> i don't know why it took so long. >> i think it's not just a male-dominated sport any longer. i think the women are taking time and engaging in leisure activities for themselves. >> we're athletic and we like the challenge because it's not just sports-mind, it's between the years. >> reporter: men have been using golf as a hobby and a great business tool for years. the fact of the matter is, women have been playing just as long as women have. in the 1550s mary queen of scots coined the term caddy. following her reign golf was under the radar and then gained

more popularity in the 20th century as a women's professional sport. >> it was kind of a scandalous thing for women to play golf back in the 19 20z but they were the new women. now i think women have more free time. >> reporter: today there are well over 5 million female golfers in the u.s. alone. >> women and golf, i like playing with my wife. that's basically how i met my wife. she first beat me when we were dating. >> good for her. the olympic club, which is hosting the u.s. open, though, did not begin admitting women as members into the club until 1992, believe it or not, and another 14 years before the club had its first female president. there was a different sort of debut at the u.s. open. not a new golf favorite or gadget for spectators but an educational experience called the stem zone in the corporate partner pavilion nir the

i'm kris sanchez along with rob and happy father's day out there. kids, get your acts together and make sure do you something fun for dad. >> the weather will be good. san francisco yesterday, 86 degrees in downtown. i think today we'll flip those numbers around. we'll go for 68 in san francisco today. right now, look at the yellow and orange inland, 60s and 70s around contra costa and alameda counties, so the sea breeze starting to reach fairfield. it will take time before cool air makes a dent in inland temperatures. look at the low clouds, hour by hour, looking at the u.s. open in the bay area. you're likely seeing those low clouds sweep in around 5:00, 6:00. you see the red there. livermore into san jose will warm up quickly around lunchtime. cool off quickly, though, towards the evening. that is the effect of the oceanaire conditioning. we'll talk about how much cool ter will be by the time we get

into monday coming up on the full forecast. >> the official start of summer is this week as well as. >> wednesday. >> thank you very much, rob. this morning neighbors are offering their support to a san mateo family following a tragic drowning. the family's 3-year-old wandered into a lagoon close to their home yesterday. the family called 911 but a neighbor found the girl a short distance away. by the time officers arrived, it was too late. paramedics performed cpr but were unable to revive her. >> i talked to the dad a little bit. he said, you know, once you have two babies, so then the next thing you don't have them. >> and these are images from a vigil those neighbors held to try to offer some sort of comfort to the parents. neighbors say the little girl was a fraternal twin and she leaves behind a 3-year-old brother. this morning a scholarship fund is set up for the children of san francisco firefighters.

it is in honor of vincent perez, who was killed last june when a flashover erupted in the burning house he was in. fellow firefighters anthony died as well. yesterday friends and family hosted a fund-raiser at archbishop reardon high school with the goal of raising 25,000 for that scholarship in perez's name. they did it with a live auction, raffles and other opportunities to donate. perez graduated from reardon in 1981 and his brother says had slorship is not just an honor for the school, it's an honor for his family. >> reardon high school was a place my mom always wanted us to attend. it meant achievement and honor. her and my father they would save their money to be able to send us to a school. it's a huge honor. >> organizers say that scholarship will likely go to the son of a firefighter or daughter of a firefighter if possible every year. mountaineers are trying to recover the bodies of four japanese climbers swept downhill

by ave larchlg from mt. mckinley. >> reporter: mt. mckinley, the pinnacle of alaska's denali national park, a destination fort most skilled climbers who risk their lives to reach the 20,000 foot summit. an avalanche thursday swept an japanese expedition team down the steep slope. four of five in the group are presumed dead. they were traveling as a single rope team but the line snapped when tons of snow and debris swept over them. the search continued through the weekend with roughly 400 mountaineers making rescue attempts though snowfall and wind tampered. only about half will make it to the top. it's a roughly three-week journey that requires intense planning. >> there's a ridge you're walking on where you don't want

to fall because you could fall thousands of feet down either side. it's walking but it's dangerous walking. >> reporter: as the weather warm the risk increases. in the past decade there's only been a single year 2003 in which no one perished on denali. after the latest accident with still a few weeks left in the 2012 climbing season, a total of six have now lost their lives. ted land for nbc news. now, a 69-year-old man did survive the avalanche and recovering from minor injuries. happy hour could soon make a comeback in one east bay city. heyward leaders are considering lifting a ban on happy hour in full service restaurants but the ban is temporary. if approved, businesses will be able to serve reduced price alcoholic drinks during certain times of the day. local restaurant owners have started complaining about staying competitive. the ban was originally put in place back in 2006 to eliminate the red tape restaurants had to

go through to get a liquor permit. palo alto cash strapped animal shelters are getting a very welcome boost. they'll receive $47,000 from santa clara county after the board of supervisors passed its budget. the money only covers a fraction of the $470,000 they need to operate services, though. leaders have plans to table raise more funds by hiking fees and cutting staff. local groups are also pitching in by holding a fund-raiser this week to benefit the city's animal shelters. also in paola alto the streets will be filled with music today for world music day. it is the fourth year of this popular event and features 50 music groups from jazz to rock to choral and the sidewalks in the street corners will be very busy. also in front of city hall plaza. the festival takes place from

alameda municipal power, though, says they have a strict policy of never asking for credit card information over the phone. in texas, several san antonio grade school teachers are in trouble after what they did to an alleged bully. it all began back in may when 6-year-old aden was spotting cutting in line. his teacher accused him of being a bull yp 3 9 boy was sent to another classroom where a different teacher had his class of more than 20 kids line up so they could hit him. aden's mom believes the teacher also told him to be quiet about the punishment. the 6-year-old was not seriously hurt but suffering from emotional trauma. >> my heart stopped, my stomach was in knots. i was in shock. i really was. i couldn't believe a teacher would do that. >> the district attorney's office is now looking into that incident. the school district fired the teacher who ordered the hitting and the other teacher was reprimanded.

but not completely sure you want to book it? under the new rules, there is a grace period. you have 24 hours to cancel the ticket without a penalty as long as you buy or reserve the seat at least one week before you take off. >> that's a great time to just re-evaluate. >> reporter: another change, expect more summer flight cancellations. a new tarmac rules requires airlines that delay too long on the runway to pay big penalties. >> the idea is that an airline instead of maybe risking having to pay a really, really hefty fine, if there's bad weather or there's a summer storm, they'll just cancel the flight completely. that way at least they're not paying. >> reporter: when airlines overbook, passengers get bumped. if that happens, the new rules put more money back in your pocket. >> the new rules increase the amount of money that you are reimbursed if you are involuntarily bumped from a flight. it's up to $650 for a short

onshore winds going to meet a much cooler day around the u.s. open as we watch things wrap up here on nbc bay area this afternoon. it's going to be jacket weather, i think, throughout the day today. we'll see temperature maybe try to climb into the low 60s but by 4:00 that sea breeze is going to turn quite strong. breezy and cooler and perhaps even some mist by the time we get towards 5:00 and 6:00. a much cooler finish to the u.s. open and should be much cooler finish to the bay area, coast and peninsula. 61 degrees in san francisco. the temperature to watch will be the inland valleys where the heat will be trapped. 70 right now in livermore. may get into the low 90s around lunchtime before the sea breeze cools us off and some of our inland valleys. right now we're starting to see the sea breeze reach into solano county. the wind starting to pick up throughout date and that sea breeze start to cool off for temperatures by the time we get into monday for our inland valleys. so, as we watch what's going on, what you're going to see here is we've got the southerly surge

working up the coast. now the low clouds already up towards the north bay coastline around sonoma coast. that is the oceanaire conditioning we've been talking about. we'll see these temperatures start to cool on down as we go through the afternoon. for the north bay and out along the coast, we'll be watching some low clouds starting to sweep inland as we head towards the evening. this is the time when we're really going to start to see the cooling even in inland locations by the time we get into tomorrow morning, we'll see low clouds inland for your monday morning commute. temperaturewise we'll see a quick warm-up, especially out around pleasanton and livermore, maybe sanyo say. the rest of the day into the evening you're starting to see the punch of the marine air reaching our inland location. temperature will rapidly cool down throughout the evening. as you watch the u.s. open, keep an eye on the winds and low clouds sweeping in for the afternoon. much cooler day as we wrap things up around the olympic club later on today. temperatures around the bay area, upper 80s, low 90s out

there briefly for the south bay before things cool for the evening. hotter places we'll likely see around pleasanton and livermore with temperature cooler back to the inner bay. north bay, those southerly winds will push cooler air up towards santa rosa and nap a for today. cooler spread of temperature today. we should not be near 106 degrees like yesterday in livermore but one more day of 90s inland. certainly cooler as we get into tomorrow where inland spots will be in the 70s to low 80s. wednesday we'll warm up in time for the official start of summer. summer solstice arrives at 4:09 in the afternoon. another trough of low pressure and unlike this brief cooldown monday, this will last thursday into next weekend. looks like we'll see temperature running cooler than that, maybe some drizzle for the end of the week. >> drizzle even. thank you very much, rob. here's one way to cool off from all of this recent heat. across the pacific on or abouten in shanghai, china, a swimming pool was constructed on top of a holiday inn hotel.
