we're in half moon bay, california, at the half moon bay golf links. they have the old course and the ocean course. let me describe this beautiful, spectacular majestic. it's just awesome here right on the coast of northern california. the golf courses are wonderful here. they have the ritz carlton where you can stay or if you want to come in for the day, both golf courses are absolutely great. the old course has been here for about 5 years and it plays in among some houses but they don't really impede your play. it's a nice playout. very, very testy. for example, they held a number of usga qualifyings here. they ree recently had qualifies for the usga women's open. a couple of youngsters qualified. so great stuff here. the newer course, the ocean course, they call it, has only been here for a handful of years and it's one of the newer golf

courses in the bay area and it gives you a different experience. it is a lynx experience right out here on the coast. we're looking today at number 17 on the ocean golf course. it's a really a spectacular par 3. right along the water here and you've got a little bit of wind. you can certainly play a factor. you have green. if you want an experience like ireland or scott land, half moon bay, the ocean course, is a great experience. number 18 on the old course here at half moon bay is really one of the great holes. you see it photographed very, very often and you play right up to the ritz-carlton which was not here originally. it was built a number of years after the golf course was built but it's a great hole here. i got e got a good driver with, again, the little bit of wind to keep me from going into the little creek that runs in front

of the green and then i had a 9 iron into the green. it's small. it's fun when you play here. often you'll have guests from the hotel sitting right up on the patio having a little glass of win and maybe cheering you on if you hit a real good one. so this is our next stop along the way. half moon bay golf limpks. how you enjoyed our shortstop here on the coast. >> before i tee off here on the 9th hole, here's a tip. a very common fault a lot of people have, if you hit a pole or a slice that starts to the left and comes over, very common is a problem called "coming over the top." the good players the club will drop and right toward the target. what happens in the case of coming over the top is the first move from the top you get anxious with the hands and the club will come this wayne. and now you can see the momentum of the club is coming across the

path so i'm going to either pull it left and a lot will come back as a slice. so any of you have this "little red book" go to page 96. with may ji move. what he talked about is that from the top of the swing, and a month jik move is that they're dropping the cloub -- >> kind of like a baseball player stepping into the pitch. the movement is the club dropping and my legs starting at the same time and now, in slow motion, i'll come right here and that's a real good fix for a pole or a slice in your golf game. i'm going to go ahead to hit one and i hope the guys in they did it studio can slow it down. hopefully i've done the right thing. i'm getting ready to go and i feel real patient from the top of the swing. not rushing it. the club, dropping them straight down.

so work on this tip at home and you might get to hit one just like that. see you on the fairway. for more on the history of the olympic lub, here's raj mathai. >> the through tourms held at the olympic club, we saw a dramatic rally on the final day. payne stewart and lee januaryso. in 1993 he edged stewart to win the national championship. now they'd do it again, this time on a truly demanding course. >> olympic is so many holes. the fairway is tilting one side or the other. you have to timt the ball. a lot of guys worked the ball one way or the other so to be there that week i had to be hitting the ball just about as well as i could hit it.

>> it was office course very familiar to him. >> i played olympics as a kid, i think i was 16. and the u.s. amateur was getting ready to be played and that was excited for me to play the course on a that the band was on so the olympics have always had a special place in mier heart. the course. conditions, the weather, everythingbility it. lots of good memories. when the u.s. open was coming back there, i had lots of positives with on certainly a lot of positive memories about going there and playing so i was looking forward to it probably more so than any other u.s. open. >> despite his positive outlook it was stuart that jumped out as early leader and he never looked back. stewart was in command, going to bed each night with a three through the first flee the rounds. he took a four-stroke lead in the final round.

earlier, janssen started to fire and stewart misfired and he experiences bad luck. on the 12th hole, stewart hit a perfect t shoelt in the fairway but it landed in a sand-divot. >> when stewart hit t. and joon seven would have taken the lead and finished his round with a one-stroke advantage as he waited apparently in the clubhouse. he had his last chance. to win janson, once again, crowned the u.s. open champion.

>> it's certainly a great accomplishment to have on your resume. i know very few people who have juan win u.s. open. you win one, maybe something at the end where the other guys made mistake but you end up winning and you had to play pretty good to get to that point. i've been lucky long enough. good bounce here or there. make a putt. make a chip june. it sure does. there's a lot of thanks have to fall into place. >> almost time to wrap things up but we're not done yet. stay with us. ♪

ride it at universal studios hollywood. >> here's a golf tip for you and especially those that have shanked a ball or hit a shot fat often with a short iron, here's your fix. i think the golf club is supposed to be hit with the golf shaft somewhat straight up and down. you'll notice here that what they call the bounced soul is

going to be flat on the ground and kind of skim along the ground. a lot of people will do and this is the incorrect part that you need to check for yourself, they'll put the ball back in the stands and you'll see the angle in my club is at this sort of angle. so what's going to happen is that when i hit my shot, i'm going to hit down like this and that's going to be that big divot. it should be inside the left heel. i like to also think that my arm and club dropped straight down. here i am and then there's that sitting correctly. the shank ball is the same idea only it's when the ball is back like this on my stance and i come into the ball here, then i'm coming in with the hozdle part first. that's the shank you don't like to see happen. here's the tip for you. if you hit the ball too heavy or fat with that big divot or shank the ball with the short iron, i'd like to see you put the ball a little more forward.

meteorologist, rob mayedmayeda. and the big story is in san francisco at the olympic club. let's show you how it shook down the new national champion of golf. about 90 minutes ago, web simpson along with his wife, they found out together, that he was the u.s. open champion while he was in the locker room after his round. and he and his wife, seven months pregnant expecting their second child. unless you follow golf you probably have no idea who this guy is. 26 years old and a couple years out of college. the national champion of golf. he wins $1.4 million as he's the u.s. open champion here at the olympic club. >> there's a major change today. did you watch it on tv or were you out here yourself? sunny skies all week. it's been glorious. but today, you know how it works. our secret was revealed for the national television audience. fog in june. a thick blanket of fog rolls

right through this course and across the peninsula around the noon hour and that fog remains as we speak. cold and damp but really, no surprise. this is classic golf weather here at the olympic club. what are they doing at this hour? they're deconstructing the place. the bleachers, the tent, the hotdog stands, after so many fans came through. 225,000 fans came through for the four rounds and practice rounds. sold out every round. the usga telling us they're thrilled with the amount of support and enthusiasm that they had in the bay area. the bay area is such a hotbed for golf. back out here live we have jim kozimor. the history of the olympic club. whoever you think is going to win ain't going to win. >> that's right. it's proof of the greatest

reality television of all time. look at the four days in which golf is plays here in the 112th united states open championship. day one, the best round carted was a 66 at 4 under. that was from michael thompson, he was atop the leader board but only for a day. then tiger woods, and then the third day jim furyk and graeme mcdowell. but on the final day, it was all web simpson. not just 26 years old from wake forest. on something called a arnold palmer scholarship. arnold palmer had one of his worst moments right here in '66 when he blew the lead. comingor similarson. web simpson after the tournament. >> pretty nerve-racking. i'm glad my wife is here with me in the booth. but, you know, it was a cool day. i had a piece all day. i knew it was a tough golf

course and it wasn't going to yield many birdies and i had to go out and do as womell as i could. i prayed. >> you were an arnold palmer scholar at wake forest and that one of the most crushing defeats, heartbreaking defeats of his entire came right here in '66 when he blew a big lead against billy casper and ultimately lost in the playoff? >> arnold has been so good to me playing under his scholarship at wake. i thought about that story and he's meant so much to me and wake forest that if i win, i can get a little back for him and it will make him smile. >> no matter the outcome welcome great going today. >> thank you. >> so, what a difference a year makes in 2011, rory mcilory wins the u.s. open at 16 under and this year it's 1 over. so the biggest winner had to be the olympic club lake course. after that, graeme mcdowell who has won in the past and michael

thompson who had a great first day and he hung tough. jim furyk fell apart late. but all eyes were on tiger woods. 3 over for the day and dave has more on tiger. >> jim, it didn't take long here today to realize that tiger woods wasn't going to be a factor in sunday eats final round. he played his first 6 holes in 6 over par including a double bogey on the par 3 3rd and it was all downhill from there. >> i felt great on the greens and unfortunately got off to an awful start and we tried coming in but i was too far out. i mean, i just didn't play well at all and you know, i can never get anything going positively and i missed the ball on the wrong side a couple of times and that's you will it takes. overall the way i struck the golf ball and controlled it, you know, if i just would have hung in there a limit bit better yesterday and missed the ball on

the correct side a couple of times, i would have been in a better position going in today. i hit the ball very women the first two days and yesterday i was a fraction off. just a couple of yards here and there and that's all it takes is a couple of yards. i had so many balls on the fairway that it wasn't in the rough. if there were just shaped, maybe another yeerd or two they would have held and been in the first cut. that makes a big difference. especially as firm as it got yesterday. not as firm today, obviously, with the marine layer coming in. but yesterday was close. >> it was surprising considering he had a share of the 36-hole lead the 11th time in his career he had done that. in previous ten he won nine. back to you at the desk. >> dave, thank you very much. web simpson is the new u.s. open champion with a five-hole stretch where he had four

home in ree am to, california poo. >> he was found to be unreresponsive from the pool. >> he was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. in 1991, video emerged of lapd officers beating king following a high-speed chase. four officers were charged with assault. >> not guilty. >> their acquittal a year later rocked los angeles and led to one of the most destructive riots in u.s. history. the violence last three days. killed 55 people, and left large parts of los angeles ablaze. >> can we all get along? >> those five words are part of king's legacy, a plea for peace in the midst of raging violence that core through los angeles. in if 20 years that followed, rodney king openly struggled with alcohol and occasional run-ins with the law but remained a symbol against police brutality. >> are you comfortable with that role in how people per you? >> this is the healing part pore

for me and i accept that. >> rodney king was 47 years old. firefighters in southern california are expected to fully contain a large wildfire by midnight tonight. fire is burning in a remote area of riverside county. it has destroyed 2200 acres, about three square miles. more than 400 firefighters are battling the flames and they've had a tough time because of the wind. no homes are threatens though and the cause is still under investigation. the temperatures around here dropped quite a bit today compared to yesterday. we saw it out at the olympic club. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. not quite the big change in the rest of the bay area but boy, big difference at the olympic club? >> probably one of the spots that dropped about 20 degrees today. we're talking san francisco, right there on thecoast. you saw the fog and the mist following there. 64 in san francisco but we managed mid 90s in livermore, south san jose and morgan hills.

normally the hottest time of the day is 4:00. at 4:00, that's when the sea breeze started to kick in so right now you can see the cooling we're seeing around the bay area and those winds to the east bay valley, 15 to 20 miles an hour and as you saw, quite a bit of fog and mist there around the peninsula and as we go through the coast we'll see drizzle as that southerly surge certainly has arrived. tomorrow morning you'll wake up to misty skies and low clouds all the way to theal h altamont pass as this sets up for a very cool start to the work week. trivalley will see numbers nowhere near the 90s. more about that coming up. diane? >> thank you, rob. in theelta two people drowned after the small fishing boat capsized this weekend. the drowning happened yesterday morning about five miles west of stockton. we're told three people were in the fishing boat when it overturned and a passing boater manageed to rescue one of the three. crews found one body and the

well as his wife's version. it all has to do with a fight they had in december that resulted in him being suspended from his job as sheriff. during that fight, he bruised his wife's arm leading to charges. his wife's friend and neighbor, ivory madison, is the one who first alerted authorities to the fight. in a sworn statement madison's version of what that bruise happened and how is different from he and his wife's statements. the key difference? the husband and wife say it happened near the car while madison says it happened inside the house as the fight escalated. that difference will likely be a key point during the hearing on the case scheduled to begin on tuesday at city hall. one man is dead and a woman is behind bars tonight after an apparent intentional hit and run in east oakland. wit-y her car woman hit the after a street fight around 9:00 last night. near 61st avenue, a few blocks north of the oakland coliseum

and the man killed has been identified as lewis valascond investigators say it's not clear if the two knew each other. >> and new numbers released by the fbi show that the bay area saw a significant drop in violent crime as well as the past five years in almost all cities except oakland and vallejo. the chronicle crunched the numbers and reports that 13 of the bay area's 15 largest cities all had fewer homicide, robberies, assaults and rapes. concord, fremont and daily city saw drops of more than 20% and the bay area and nation have both seen a trend with violence dropping for the past five years. how much you ask? for an example, san francisco saw the number of homicide drop by almost half. in the past five years compared to the previous five. many experts predicted the opposite because of the economy and fewer social programs and fewer police on the streets and experts say the recession could have created a sense of

u.s. olympic club, they didn't waste time asking for tigts. >> a special occasion, comes around only once every 10 or 15 years. >> this is a family affair for many. >> it gives you the opportunity and puts you on an even playingfield. i come out with my son-in-law and friends and family and we have a great time. >> something that you can do from the time the kids are young until you get, you know, until your later years and you can enjoy it as a family and go out as an individual and something that brings you together as a family. >> golfers say the thing about the sport is that it's so inclusive. >> i think you can enjoy it at all ages. the kids enjoy it. my dad, he's a grandpa, he enjoys it. once you enjoy it once you like it you like it for the rest of your life. >> most is walking with friends you like as opposed to playing. it's an excuse to get out there and do it. >> the holiday isn't lost on the players at the u.s. open either.

>> temperatures dropping about 20 to 25 degrees around the coast. the peninsula and the cooler air has punched its way inland. so nowhere near 80 degrees at 11:00 tonight in livermore like last night. the marine air has reached the east bay valley and the wind speeds, southwest of 24 through fairfield and cool air pushes in patchy low clouds tomorrow morning. we'll see a cool start to the work week. much cooler than the week where inland highs are only in the 60 or 70s tomorrow and just in time for the official start of summer, things climbing back pup. some 80s and 90s in the forecast by wednesday. here's the ocean air conditioning and the drizzle storm we saw over the u.s. open. all the low clouds spillinging over the peninsula as we as you the marine layer thicken up and it will push inland for tomorrow and drop the temperatures a little bit as winds pick up out of the north on tuesday. we'll see those temperatures climbing back up. for your morning folk, plan on drizzle and a lot of low clouds for the morning peeling back to the coast for the afternoon but

the fol will linger around the golden gate and to the ocean for the afternoon and evening. temperatures rebound on monday and rebounding on tuesday and wednesday. tomorrow through lunchtime, it will be a little cool outside and you can keep a light jacket with you throughout the day around the inner bay as the numbers really get out of the 50s and 60s for tomorrow. around the bay area for your monday, only near 80 around morgan hill today. mid 90s. big drop tomorrow. around the trivalley, comfortable and 70s to low 80s and breezy at times for your monday afternoon and around the coast to the north bay. 60s and 70s for monds. get ready for changes come tuesday and wenlz as the winds start to turn back out of the north and that will warm things up and dry us out for the official start of summer. 4:09 on wednesday. which coincidentally will be the warmest day of the week. when we get to summer we'll see cooling and 70s and 80s. things will warm up briefly and stay cool for a while as we get

but on top of the leader board, jim furyk and graheme mcdowell. the 112th u.s. open coming down to the wire. webb simpson trying to get to the clubhouse at 1 over par, a chip on 18 and a great touch looefds him at a 3 foot putt and he's got it. simpson with a par putt and he finished 1 over pier for the tournament and was the leader in the clubhouse. graeme mcdowell, he needed a birdie to force a playoff and his approach on 18 well done. he would have a chance. jim furyk, his approach on 18, he also needed a birdie to force a playoff and his shot, lands left and then it gets buried. furyk would bogey and be eliminated and graeme mcdowell for the tie on 18. 20 feet down the hill and he aims left and webb simpson is your 2012 u.s. open champion. other golfers had their chances at the open but they missed

close calls. en. >> henry smith has more. >> no one was talking about webb simpson coming into the final round of the u.s. open but he made a miraculous comeback from four shots back and put himself into position to win but he had to sweat out that final home where jim furyk and graeme mcdowell had a chance to catch him. but neither jim furyk or graeme mcdowell could come up with the all-important birdie when they needed it the most. >> played well until the last three holes. i have to look at home 7 to 72 is what cost me the tournament. and i needed to do better on the last three into i didn't feel as good as i felt yesterday. yesterday i managed to shake off my fears and nerves and go out and get in a grit groove. today was a struggle. conditions were tougher. the ball wasn't flying very far. >> i didn't have any expectations. i was excited to play olympic club. it's been five yourself since

you don't need a ticket. come to the olympic club tomorrow morning, 50% off all the items remaining in the merchandise tent. banging back in jooirm from comcast sportsnet. this was a nice week. we saw a lot of things and i think it was really fun in terms of tv ratings and the atmosphere to see tiger woods in contention tid today and then have a relative no-name win. >> a relative no name does that because if you look at the history of the u.s. open that were played here at the olympic club it's the name that jumps up and surprises everyone and comes across as a winner. this is a success for the olympic club and this this is on the grand international stage. the course was the biggest star of the four-day event and it won over for the tournament it shows how tough it was. >> you talk about tiger woods. does he go home thinking -- i can build from this. >> he's got to remember a winner.
