been put on life support after suffering a stroke yesterday. a lawyer for mubarak tells nbc news the ousted dictator is still alive after reports spread of his death on tuesday. the 84-year-old has been moved to a military hospital in cairo where he's said to be in very critical condition. meanwhile, protests have erupted in tahrir square as to who will succeed him. mubarak's former prime minister and the muslim brotherhood candidate both claimed victory in last week's elections, yet it's uncertain if the ruling military council will fully recognize either. the official vote tally is expected tomorrow. as the g-20 summit meeting wrapped up in mexico, european leaders could not agree on specifics to fix financial problems in greece and spain. nevertheless, president obama is optimistic europe will find a solution to its economic crisis. nbc's steve handelsman has more from washington. >> reporter: two days at the g-20 summit in mexico left

marco rubio is being vetted as a possible vice-presidential running mate. tuesday reports the senator from florida was not being checked out and out of the running are false, according to romney. he says he can't imagine who are the unnamed advisers quoted in those stories. former penn state football coach jerry sandusky may take the stand in his own defense today. the judge presiding over the child sex abuse trial says the sandusky's defense team is close to wrapping up. yesterday dottie sandusky testified in her husband's defense. nbc's brian mooar reports. >> reporter: the wife of jerry sandusky took the witness stand to defend the former penn state football state coach against charges he abused ten boys over a decade and a half. dottie sandusky has emerged as a key third-party witness, perhaps jerry sandusky's best hope of an alibi. several accusers say she was nearby when sandusky abused them

during sleepovers at the family home or on trips. the wife denied there was any inappropriate contact. she said she never saw or heard anything. earlier a defense expert said sandusky suffers from an obscure mental disorder. forensic psychologist elliot atkins says his diagnosis of histrionic personality disorder offers an alternate explanation for what were previously described as creepy love letters from sandusky to one of his accusers. day two of defense testimony focused as much on knocking down charges as building up sandusky's reputation with a parade of character witnesses recalling his good deeds. brian mooar, nbc news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in florida an airport camera captured a woman groping a female tsa adviser as she was trying to demonstrate what she just claimed happened to her

when another tsa agent searched her. now the tsa claims their agent did nothing wrong. even more strange, the passenger is herself a former tsa agent who then hugged a former coworker. she's facing misdemeanor battery charges. in texas, a robbery wasn't just violent but savage. police say a man attacked a store clerk, choking and then biting the victim's face. the employee said he thought he was going to die. the robber escaped with cash and is still on the loose. and, finally, in california a woman was critically injured after the car she was riding in slammed upside down into a pool north of san diego. police think the driver was speeding when he lost control on the street out front which sits along a hill known by the locals as roller-coaster road. he then plowed through the fence before the car finally came to rest in the water. well, now let's get a check at your national and regional weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins.

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. republican congressman darrell issa says he will hold a contempt vote against attorney general eric holder today. the two couldn't agree on providing documents from a controversial gun-smuggling investigation known as "operation fast and furious." "the washington post" reports the u.s. and israel developed the computer virus nicknamed flame, which collected intelligence in preparation for cyber sabotage aimed at slowing iran's ability to build a nuclear weapon. julian assange, the founder of wikileaks, is inside an ecuadorian embassy in london today, seeking political asylum to avoid being sent to sweden for questioning on sexual misconduct charges. and england's queen elizabeth arrived at the royal ascot races by carriage, wearing an outfit conforming to a strict

new dress code for the royal enclosure, but throughout the rest of the course, there were plenty of wild fascinators and short dresses to be seen. that's an understatement right there. well, now here's an early look at one of your top health headlines on msnbc.com. there's a new study that finds that exposure to ultraviolet radiation cut the risk of developing pancreatic cancer by 24%. however, exposure to the sun's uv rays increases the risk of skin cancer such as melanoma. so researchers are still unable to determine what level of uv exposure would lower the risk of pancreatic cancer without increasing skin cancer risks. and for more information on this and other health stories, you can check out the health page at msnbc.com. >> announcer: "early today" health is brought to you by vagisil wash with odor block. the confident clean. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,837 after adding 95 points yesterday. the s&p gained 13. the nasdaq climbed 34.

taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei rose 96 points, while in hong kong the hang seng was up 102. well, volume was light on the street tuesday, but traders making bets had high hopes ahead of the fed policy meeting. the central bank wraps up its two-day meeting this afternoon and investors are optimistic it will extend its operation twist program, which has lowered long-term interest rates. speculation is less certain about another round of bond buying stimulus known as quantitative easing. materials and financial stocks led tuesday's rallies with u.s. steel and bank of america making the biggest gains in those sectors. elsewhere investors were encouraged by signs of life in the housing market with builders breaking new ground on more single-family homes and requesting more permits than they had in three and a half years. shares of oracle shot up 3% on stronger than expected profit. fedex also added 3%, despite

warnings slow economic growth would weigh on its early profit. on the downside, walgreen tumbled 6% on news it's buying 45% stake in europe's pharmacy chain alliance boots for $6.7 billion. jc penney lost 9% a day after its president abruptly resigned in the wake of the retailer's botched ad campaign. investors mostly shrugged off the labor department's report that employers posted the fewest job opening in five months during april. and, finally, a new study out of boston college finds the percentage of stay-at-home dads is more than double what it was a decade ago. the men surveyed cited reasons from income and career considerations to satisfying family life goals. well, the indians walk off in extras, and the pirates find a new use for bubble gum. plus, the heat can't rely on their biggest star during the final minutes of game four in the nba finals. your early morning sports

and in sports last night in game four of the nba finals, the oklahoma city thunder were pushed to the brink after a third straight miami heat victory. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. move over, chris bosh. mario chalmers has taken your spot as part of miami's big three, game four in south beach. the thunder came out flying, took it to the heat in first quarter. off the fast break, kevin durant with the finish up the middle. okc up 14 after one. but miami didn't roll over. they took their first lead since the opening minutes in the third. lebron finished the quarter with eight straight from miami. russell westbrook took a lot of heat for his play in game three. he silenced the critics last night. a career playoff high 43, however, wasn't enough. under six minutes to play, and lebron got the mini jumper to fall, but was in obvious pain. his leg cramped up at the worst possible time. he was on the bench for the final two minutes. mario chalmers stepped up big in his absence, blew past three oklahoma defenders, and that was the dagger. chalmers had 25.

miami held on to take a commanding 3-1 series lead with a 104-98 win. the heat can wrap up their second title in franchise history tomorrow night. game five, 9:00 p.m. eastern in miami. baseball, reds and indians tied at 1-1 in the ninth. runners on the corners, nick hagadone picked a terrible time for a wild pitch. in came the go-ahead run and cinci was up, 2-1. but the lead was short-lived. bottom of the inning, one on four, asdrubal cabrera. he ended it with a 2-1 bomb to right. indians walked off with a 3-2 win in ten. and, finally, there's a lot of down time during a baseball game, just enough time for teammates to turn on each other. to pittsburgh where the pirates' brad lincoln fell victim to the dreaded "cup on the hat" prank. his teammates discreetly attached a paper cup to his cap with bubble gum. it took several minutes and a ton of laughs before brad realized the joke was on him. when you've got a cup on your head and egg on your face, all you can do is give the camera a big thumb's up. that's your early look at sports on "early today."

photographer tuesday morning leaving manhattan's marriage license bureau with his fiancee. marcus santos of the "daily news" filed charges after he was examined at a hospital. baldwin's rep denies punches were thrown. he claims the photographer, frustrated by someone blocking his shot, pushed by and assaulted baldwin with his camera. baldwin later tweeted with hash tag all paparazzi should be water-boarded. >> little over the top. >> a little bit. after 14 years johnny depp and partner vanessa paradis have, quote, amicably separated. for months depp has denied trouble, despite the two mostly living apart. well, forbes' list of highest paid actresses has a new number one, kristen stewart, with $34.5 million earned from may 2011 to may 2012. a close second, cameron diaz with $34 million over the same span. way back in third, sandra bullock with a more modest $25 million. angelina jolie took fourth place with $20 million.

in israel, the bigger the better. it's called the fat and beautiful pageant where 16 contestants strut their stuff in casual wear and evening gowns. the pageant sponsors want to show that not only skinny girls can be beautiful. the winner weighing in at 242 pounds says all large ladies should be proud of their size. well, you might be familiar with sheep herding but what about ducks? in china, traffic came to a standstill when a local farmer herded a flock of about 5,000 ducks to a pond for feed. he maneuvered them using only a cane and said he had not lost a single duck during the migrations during the past six months. adorable, right? not so much for the folks stuck in traffic behind them. not so much.

well, finally, ice cream is surely one way to beat the heat, and now man's best friend can enjoy one too. as a way to cool off pooches during the dog days of summer, one ice maker in italy has concocted a special recipe just for canines, a mixture of yogurt, rice, flour, and yellow vanilla gelato. each tub contains no milk or sugar so it won't pose any health risks to dogs. can we call that ice cream? i don't know. let's call it frozen, you know, mush. >> frozen that they love and will drool incessantly over. >> that they'll need a lot in the next few days here. it's time for now for an early look at some of the stories we'll follow throughout the day on nbc. senate democrat dick durbin of illinois will meet with nfl commissioner roger goodell to discuss possible reforms against so-called bounty programs, which award players illegal cash bonuses for inflicting injuries on opposing players, this after the nfl handed out suspensions to the new orleans saints for a bounty system the team ran from 2009 to 2011.
