coming up over the bay area. does that scream summer or what? it is this afternoon on this wednesday, june 20th. this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good sunny morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 6:00 right now, i'm laura garcia-cannon. a developing story this morning in the east bay. federal investigators will be at the site of last week's massive fire that is suspected of being intentionally set. "today in the bay's" stephanie trong is live in oakland where the flames last week led to a day-long commuter nightmare. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: this was an estimated so far $25 million worth of damage to a senior housing complex that had been under construction. the traffic headache when, of course, b.a.r.t. shut down the lines between west oakland in san francisco, you could see how

close the b.a.r.t. tracks run to this property where this fire was. those are the major reasons why special agents with the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives or the atf will be out here in about three hours. they bring with them extensive experience with complex fire scenes as well as access to dogs that have been trained specifically in detecting accelerant, vital in determining whether this was arson. >> the fire was a large magnitude fire, it was about a city-long block. due to the dollar loss of the building and that b.a.r.t. was shut down and such, we just want to be completely thorough and have a lot of resources to utilize to help with the investigation. >> reporter: some atf agents were here last thursday, but they had to wait for engineers to make sure the scene was safe enough for investigators to really take a closer look. one tidbit that led to suspicion of arson was the security guard here at the time said three young men harassed him and chased him off the property right before the fire.

something else that will play a major role, security camera footage from b.a.r.t. investigators are looking at it to hopefully move this investigation forward. live in west oakland, stephanie trong, today in the bay. 8:02. new this morning. oakland fire dealing with an early morning blaze. crews responding before 4:00 this morning to a store at telegraph avenue and 42nd street. the flames were out in 25 minutes. the cause is still under investigation. a san francisco couple says they only wanted to save their 17-year-old daughter from a life of prostitution, but prosecutors say they went too far killing the girl's pimp. they're scheduled to appear in court this morning. they face premeditated murder charges in the deadly shooting of calvin snead near candlestick park on june 4th. the couple's attorney says they did not do it. the d.a. says prosecutors have substantial evidence of the couple's guilt. they're being held on $2 million bail.

a san francisco bicyclist who admits running down an elderly pedestrian will be arraigned today on manslaughter charges. the 71-year-old died after being struck by chris in a busy crosswalk last march at market and castro. the 36-year-old cyclist allegedly wrote in a blog that he couldn't stop in time and plowed through the crowd. prosecutors say there is evidence he was speeding and running lights to break a record for riding through the city. 6:04 this morning. we know more about what will be testifying in the case to remove suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. the ethics commission debated witness and evidence. commissioners are considering the future of the suspended sheriff's job. mirkarimi pled guilty to false imprisonment with connection with a domestic violence incident involving his life on new year's eve. during a break in the meeting,

mirkarimi called the case against him smeared sensationalism. they're throwing everything they can against the wall to see what sticks. >> mirkarimi is expected to testify next week. the commission is expected to decide if the video take of lopez showing a friend a bruise on her arm will be allowed as evidence. the man accused of attack a priest at a south bay retirement home will see his victim today when they meet in court. we're live outside the courthouse where the department is expected to argue he was the real victim. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. testimony will be heard to hear for jurors here at the hall of justice, but william lynch says he plans to tell all about the abuse he suffered at the hands of father gerald lindner. lynch says as a child he and his brother went on a camping trip to the santa cruz mountains with father lindner. while there lynch says the

priest sexually abused both children inside the tent. fast forward two decades, and police say lynch walked into father lindner's retirement home with the jesuit order in los gatos and pummeled her. lynch doesn't deny he beat up the retired priest and now says he plans to expose the clergy aabuse graphically during his trial. just a few minutes ago i spoke with s.n.a.p. they are angry and will be here in court. >> i think that the pummeling of will lynch, who is a hurt, broken man, while the accused serial pedophile is allowed to roam free is just disgusting. >> reporter: again, opening statements begin at 9:00 this morning here at department 34 of the hall of justice. his lawyer says that william lynch is eager to take the stand

and tell all. again, this testimony will be hard to hear, difficult, graphic, and very emotional. we're live in san jose, i'm damien trujillo, "today in the bay." the defense is expected to rest today in the sex abuse trial of jerry sandusky. still not known if the former penn state coach will take the stand in his own defense. his wife of 46 years testified yesterday she never saw or heard any evidence of abuse in their home. dottie sandusky also says she doesn't know why the victims would accuse her husband. closing arguments are scheduled for tomorrow and the jury could have the case by the afternoon. we'll have a life update from pennsylvania coming up ahead in our 6:30 after hour. we are keeping our eye on a developing story out of egypt where the country's former president is clinging to life. this morning the associated press says hosni mubarak was taken off life support. he's now in a coma. the 84-year-old suffered a

stroke in prison yesterday. egypt's state-run news says mubarak's heart stopped beating and he was, quote, clinically dead when he arrived at the hospital. supporters have been gathering outside. mubarak is serving a life sentence after being found guilty for failing to stop civilian deaths in last year's uprising. in the meantime a fight over who will succeed mubarak is playing out on the streets of cairo. mubarak's former prime minister is claiming victory in last weekend's presidential elections, but the muslim brotherhood rejects that claim. the brotherhood has sent tens thousands of supporters in tahrir square. you can see them here to denounce the country's military ruling council. the election commission will aannounce the official election results on thursday. we talk about the first day of summer today. a lot of folks excited about that at 4:09 this afternoon, right? >> easy to remember. i know nothing about 409.

we have a good-looking day shaping up. ajax maybe. up temperatures this morning are nice and cool and crisp. what we notice here is a beautiful sunny start. in san francisco you can see for ten miles or better. that's not the case tomorrow. in fact tomorrow into the weekend, that june gloom returns. i want to point that out first and foremost. 54 degrees in san mateo. temperatures are going to be on the warm side so feeling like summertime. we hold off on the cloud cover returning until about 6:00 p.m. so 17 hours of sunshine certainly the case today from antioch through livermore and san jose. you'll lose a little sun at the coast by about 6:00 p.m. look what happens between 6:00 and 11:00, you get that coastal drizzle and areas of olympic for the onshore flow. a different scenario tomorrow than what we have out there for you today. 80 degrees at noon inland, 93 degrees at 4:00 p.m. and 74 degrees at noon and 65 degrees

them closing that school. we are continues to follow this developing story this morning. 6:12 right now. well, guests are now back in rooms after a small explosion rocks tennessee's opri land hotel and convention center. police say a gas leak ignited the blast last night which happened inside an electrical room. more than 5,000 people were evacuated including those attending a sheriffs conference. good news is there's no reports of any injuries. investigators have ruled out it any suspicious activity. the next step in reforms come today in the wake of bounty-gate. roger goodell and senator dick durbin will hold a news conference to discuss possible changes after the scandal involving payments for punishing hits on the football field. players and coaches with the new orleans saints were suspended after the practice came to the light. senator durbin says he's still looking at whether such actions were criminal. athletes at the top of their game get the top salaries in

sports. >> this morning we look at how much sports stars are getting paid. who do you think according to "forbes" the top earning athlete in the world is boxer floyd mayweather with 85 million in total earnings. all of athat is in salary and winning, mayweather didn't make money in endorsements last year. number two pacquiao and tiger woods had 59 million and forty is basketball star lebron james. he hurt himself last night and takes in 63 million and raphael nadal with 52 million. pretty pennies there. not too bad and talented, too. you have to get beat up to earn it. amazing new features take on apple this morning. >> the samsung galaxy s3. it hits stores later this month. the reviews hit the papers this

morning, and they're good. the new phone has a huge screen, clever features. for instance, it will track your eyeballs when you look at it. when you look away, it dims. it uses the camera for that. if you cover the screen with your hand, it will actually mute. you can shush it. david poeg of the "new york times" said wow, when samsung wants to win, it doesn't kid around. the new phone is a direct challenge to the iphone. apple will get the judge to stop the sale of motorola built phones infringed on apple's patents. steve jobs told his buy grapher he wanted apple to spend every last cent to destroy google's android. what will the fed dpoo? the federal open markets committee concludes its meeting today. normally we wonder if they will lower interest rates to spark growth in the economy, but it can't because interest rates are

as low as they can go. at 9:30 our time many hope to hear the feds will take other action to get things going. we've seen unemployment creeping up. we've seen inflation not an issue. those are two of the factors you need for the fed to step in and say it's time to do a third round of something to help spark the economy. >> all right. here's one thing that may help folks here in california at least, a trip to the gas station usually comes with a lot of pain at the pump. >> there could be relief in store. tracie potts joins us live from washington, d.c. with good news about gas prices. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. gas prices averaging under $4 a gallon in california. we've seen them suddenly dropping across the country over the last ten weeks. taking a look at the bay area, right now you're at $3.99 as of it this morning in oakland and san jose. san francisco is a bit higher, it's 4.11. all of those prices are down around 30 cents or more just in

the last month. so people aren't feeling as much pain at the pump. part of it has to do with the weak economy here and as you were talking about in europe that drives down demand. that also drives down prices. the other part of that is the fact that oil prices have been dropping, so that has an effect on the pump also. what does it mean into the summer driving season? more people on the roads. aaa says you can expect about 5% more people traveling this fourth of july than the year before. taxes also having a big impact on what people pay at the pump. the highest state taxes are in new york. they're paying almost 70 cents of their average gas price in taxes. in california it's very close. it's 69 cents. laura. >> all right, thank you very much, tracie. you could spend the money you're saving on maybe fried foods. we have the place for it. >> the alameda county fair opens

today and they're celebrating the 100th anniversary. p if you are 100 years old or older, you get in for free. the fair will be held at the alameda county fair grounds in pleasanton. opening day admission and rides only cost you $1. gates open this morning at 11:00 and runs tuesdays through sundays ends in early july. finally, summertime upon us just in time for county fairs and whatnot. >> yeah. that's what you start to think of, the fairs. the fair season right here in the bay area, and we're going to get fair-like weather for today and fortunately told through the upcoming weekend. temperatures drop off significantly, but i want to start with this live look over san jose. crystal clear picture here, and it's not just your inland cities enjoying all that sunshine right off the bat this morning. we have a full deck of clouds hugging the coast, but they don't push past the coastal mountains and that's the good

news. take a live look now at san francisco. this is your view this morning. you can see the golden gate bridge off in the distance. just a beautiful day shaping up for the first official day of summer. as we head throughout this afternoon, the temperatures climb from the 50s into the 90s in the warmer cities across the bay. the headlines tell the story. mostly clear to start. warmer conditions today by 3 to 5 degrees. then we drop a big dip in temperatures starting tomorrow. jet stream taking a dip to the south. that's the reason why. we see a series of storms over the course of the next 72 hours. as a result much stronger onshore flow bringing the cloud cover in over the peninsula and inland cities by tomorrow morning. fog and drizzle tomorrow morning, a different scenario than we get out there right now. enjoy that sunshine for today. 89 in san jose, 66 in san francisco, 89 degrees in redwood city as we head through the next couple of days. look at this. 93 today, 78 by tomorrow. so significantly different, cool enough to prompt that jacket just about all day long at the

coast. then as we head through the weekend, temperatures creep up a little bit in the upper 70s staying nice and xhafrtable, but we lose great beach days after today. so if you have a chance, look at the best beach cities coming up. here's your drive with mike. check that slower drive for oakland because of the accident. still have activity approaching the embarcadero exit in 880. a tractor trailer is involved in this and no injuries and that's good news. they have both of the vehicles involved in this incident off to the shoulder and maybe off the embarcadero offramp. we see the slow downtowards the bay bridge where the metering lights have been turned on. no need of 580 as an although alternate. we look at how it shapes up across the bay. the golden gate bridge moves nicely, and no problems or delays this morning. the north bay commute is behaving itself very nicely.

good morning to you. look at the sun coming up over the bay area. perfect first day of summer. put on that sunscreen, though, as you head out the door. you could calm it a killer tan. the drug that claims to make you thin, tan and sexy, but doctors say it's dangerous. it's the so-called barbie drug. it's all the latest craze called melatotan 2. it's an injectable drug sold on line. consumers think they get a synthetic hormone that stimulating cells it to darken, but doctors say there's no way to be sure what's happening. >> the main problem with getting a substance like melatotan that's not regulated, purchasing it on the internet is you don't know what you're getting.

you could get something toxic. if we're stimulating the same cells that turn cancerous in melanoma, i think the risk is very real. surprise, surprise, melatotan is not approved by the fda. wearing sunscreen is so important for everyone, but we find out it's especially important for men. a study done by the skin cancer foundation found nearly half of the men say they never use sunscreen. nearly three-quarters don't know what to look for when it comes to suspicious spots on the skin. experts say men over the age of 50 more than twice as lakeikely women to develop and die from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. >> you have to make sure brent has it on. >> i do lecture. he probably hates hearing it all the time. >> he'll thank you one day. i have sunscreen on my key chain. you can't hide out in the man cave and go outdoors without

sunscreen on. you have to put it on. it's so important. temperatures are warm enough to get outdoors for the first part of the day and turning hot later on. 70 degrees at the coast. here's a guy with a great man tan, mike anowai. >> i have the great tan for inside. the construction crews are outside and now they're clear. that crew is clear just in time for the commute to kick in for 101 north heading up north of 680. it that's where you see the slowing for san jose, but 87 holds steady. back to you. >> thank you, mike, the hawaiian island of lenai is on the brink of being sold. david muimuiroch owns the miles. they're in serious negotiators with a potential buyer, and the mayor says the island may be sold in a week or so. the asking price is between $500 and $600 million.

that's, in fact, the case. the national spotlight is sure to be here in department 34 of the san jose hall of justice. william lynch the accuser said in the past he intends to shine a spotlight on what he calls priest sex abuse, clergy abuse if you will both here in the bay area and nationwide. back then he went into the retirement center and beat up father gerald lindner. assist a child he says he abuse z himd and his brother. lynch has not denied the attack and says it was justified because of the abuse decades earlier. father lindner has denied he ever molested lynch or his brother. however, boetd lynch and his brother settled a suit against the jesuits. lynch's attorney said last night his client is eager to top. the group s.n.a.p. say they will be here closely monitoring the

trial, and they are very upset with the district attorney's office. >> the district attorney's office knows what father lindner is. i think what they should be concerned with here is the safety of children and the people that are allowed it to roam freely at the paradise here that they have set up for these predators. >> reporter: if convicted lynch faces four years in prison. the statute of limitations prevented prosecutors from goalkeeper aft going after the priest for the alleged sex abuse. that's one of the reasons s.n.a.p. is angry about what happened here. this testimony is expected to be very emotional. i'm damien trujillo for "today in the bay." a former san jose police officer faces sentencing today for molesting two teenage boys. he pleaded no contest to charges in march. the sentencing was delayed. he worked as a campus officer at

leland high in san jose for years. he resigned from the police department last fall. he faces more than three years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender. 6:33 this morning. a hearing is under way challenging charges against a marin county teenager accused of stealing a celebrity chef's lamborghini. he's charged as an adult and facing seven felonies including attempted murder. police say he fired a gun last april. investigators looking for evidence in the shooting found the yellow lamborghini belonging to chef guy fieri in a storage unit rented by wade. the $200,000 sports car disappeared from a san francisco dealership more than a year ago. once again today volunteers gather in morgan hill to serve for sierra lamar. at the same time investigators is launched a separate search for the culprit in a high-tech hoax. they're trying to find the

person that hacked into the missing teen's social media accounts. a post appeared on the internet monday night on her facebook page claiming to be sierra saying she was held in a home in saratoga. investigators think her accounts may have been cloned. a cyber expert says it's not hard to do. >> find some pictures of them online, create a fake profile and add some information about them that simply isn't true. >> sierra lamar's facebook and twitter services have been hacked since her disappearance in march. one was traced to a hacker in the philippines. 6:34. new this morning. the investigation continues on what sparked a small paint store fire in oakland. firefighters responded just before 4:00 this morning near telegraph avenue and 42nd street. it took fire crews about 25 minutes to put that blaze out. so far no word on any injuries. an update now to a developing story. we're following it in the east bay. in a couple of hours a special team of agent as will join the

investigation in what started last week's massive fire in oakland that brought b.a.r.t. trains to a halt. we're live in oakland with why the feds are called in now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i spoke with a couple of security guards here at the senior housing complex that went up in flames last week. they say before the fire there was one guard on duty, but after there are several on each shift. the one guard on duty the night of the fire says he was chased away by three young men. so the question is, was this fire intentionally set? that's what a team of special agents with the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives or the atf will focus on in less than three hours. they were here last thursday, but engineers had to shore up the site before investigators could come out. today is first day of taking a closer look with their specialized resources. >> we have access to accelerant-detection canines should we need them. we have access to a team of

individuals within atf that have worked fire scenes >> reporter: oakland fire and police will help in the federal investigation. this became a top priority considering thousands of people in the bay area were impacted after b.a.r.t. was forced to shut down lines between san francisco and west oakland. another major player in this could be b.a.r.t. surveillance cameras. investigators are taking a look at the footage for some clues. live in west oakland, today in the bay. miss a deadline and pay the price. that is the threat of facing oakland mayor jean kwan. he may fine the city and mayor if oakland misses its depd line for overdue international affairs investigations stemming from "occupy oakland" protests. if the city doesn't finish up the investigations within a year, state law prevents any legal action against officers found of wrongdoing. the city says it will likely spend $750,000 to farm out some of the work to outside investigators. happening now also in

oakland, parents continue to risk arrest to save an elementary school from shutting down. live pictures there of a campful of protestors camping out in the campus since last friday. lakeview is one of five oakland school campuses slated to be closed by the district. police have warninged protestors that they are trespassing and must leave. so far police have not acted on that order. nine hours until the official start of summer begins. it's a nice day for that. >> 17 hours of sunshine. all right seeing that over the golden gate bridge. good morning to you in san francisco and all across the bay area this morning. taking a live look outside where you can see both towers here. in fact, i've noticed quite a few people out here enjoying the beautiful start to the morning, quite a contrast. tomorrow morning we have a full deck of clouds over the golden gate and in the inland cities well with an area of low

pressure as well. 55 in san francisco and we're at 59 comfortable degrees right here in san jose for the first official day of summer. throughout the day today the clouds hold off until 6:00 p.m. and move into san francisco, san mateo and look what happens 11:00 p.m. tonight, getting a little drizzle as that onshore flow really increases. 80 degrees at noon todays, inland and 93 at 4:00 p.m. here's mike. >> heating up a little better in other spots. the map from the top middle of the screen, east shore freeway showed slowing through richmond and through the racetrack. from the bottom juror screen northbound 880 still slow approaching embarcadero. the accident has cleared debris and activity so there's slowing on the approach. live look at the oakland approach to that area, and we see the reason why we're saved it this morning. summertime kind of, so we're at the limit past the coliseum today. we know adele can mend broken hearts but apparently she can save lives. a young girl once in a coma is

pg&e is blamed for a wildfire that scorched 100 acres in sa nome ma county. they say the power line with a history of breaking caused the bodega fire in 2010. they want pg&e to pay $400,000 in a bill for fighting the fire. pg&e is settling claims with victims that lost barns, fencing and person belongings. the utility faces a lawsuit from a firefighter injured in the blaze. firefighters battles a blaze near sequoia national park. dozens of homes and campgrounds are evacuated while 300 acres burned. winds are calmer this morning, which should help them get a handle on the blaze. in the meantime a wildfire in the eastern mountains of san diego county is now 90% contained. more than 900 firefighters on the scene of that 1,000-acre fire. full containment is expected tonight. in northern colorado firefighters finally making some

progress on a 93 square mile wildfire. that blaze west of ft. collins is 55% contained with cooler temperatures expected today. a spot fire that started up last night could force more residents to evacuate. that fire is set to be the largest in colorado's history. it's already destroyed 189 homes. it was sparked by lightning 11 days ago. this morning's scorching temperatures blanketing the northeast. heat is expected to be in the high 90s, and triple-digits in cities like philadelphia, new york and boston. so far the national weather service has issued heat advisories for 11 states in the northeast and mid-atlantic regions as well as washington, d.c. >> those kids are trying to find a cool place. first day of summer. >> they will probably break records in the northeast today. we're not talking about records, however, you just saw all those stories about wildfires burning across the nation. of course, today we have

>> it's big. they have an executive summary as well. this is the very well-thought-of anderson forecast. if you can wait long enough, it says things do get better in the future for california. economists at ucla predict california will not recover until next year with unemployment staying in the double digits until then. also looks at high-speed rail. says claims the line between san francisco and los angeles will create jobs is probably misplaced. they say when they looked at japan, jobs and development there moved to the area around high-speed rail, but they weren't actually created from scratch. just moved to the area. taking a look at the markets, believe it or not, burger king is ipo-ing today. it's a strange reverse merger where burger king is a public company again. what's really important today is the fed will start talking at 9:30 our teime about what it intends to do about the economy. we expect some kind of new action. so the markets wait and hold at this point. everything is down, but it's wait until 9:30 our time. >> wait and see.

6:51 and new this morning. a french national accused of being a high-ranking al qaeda militant is under arrest in pakistan. he was captured this morning in a raid near the border with iran. he reportedly has links it to european jihadi groups. he was a friend of atta who plotted american airlines flight 11 into the world trade center, but it appears he did not have an operational role in the 9/11 attacks. the arrest is apparently prompting a hostage situation right now in france. a gunman has reportedly holed up inside a bank in southern france. he has fired so far one shot. the gunman reportedly claiming ties on al qaeda. three people are reportedly being held against their will. the city of toulouse is where another gunman went on a killing spree in march. he was killed by police after a very tense standoff. vice president joe biden is

marla. at this point we still don't know whether jerry sandusky is taking the stand in his own dwoens. court has been back in session for about 50 minutes now. when sandusky arrived about an hour and a half ago, he gave no indication of reporters of what he would do. he moved quickly in the court. his attorney did turn to reporters and say i can't talk about that. absolutely no indication of what's going on in court right now, because there is a media blackout coming from the courtroom. yesterday was loaded with witnesses for the defense. chief among them, jerry sandusky's wife of 45 years, dottie. she told the court that over her time with jerry sandusky she had never seen or heard any potential attack on a child that was being hosted in their home. she said that she was completely unaware of anything like that. however, on cross-examination when the prosecution asked her what would make eight potential victims and a potential eyewitness lie about such a matter, she said, i don't know. there were several other witnesses who testified about jerry sandusky's character,

he walked into the lobby in the retirement center in 2010 and beat up father lindner. in fact, lynch has not denied he beat up the priest, but says he did it after keeping a dark secret. he alleged father lindner abused him and his brother as little boys inside of a tent during a camping trip to the santa cruz mountains. father lindner has denied the accusations and a statute of limitations prevents them from looking deeper into the alleged allegations. the opening arguments begin at 9:00 this morning. the judge has denied cameras in the courtroom. we're live at the hall of justice. today federal investigators are on the scene of the massive fire that shut down cross bay b.a.r.t. service for 12 hours. stephanie joins live from oakland where a team is expected to search for evidence of arson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. they're coming out here because it has significant damage to

this senior housing complex that has been under construction, plus the traffic headaches you mentioned when b.a.r.t. shut down the lines. the train is going by, just how close b.a.r.t. tracks were to this fire. now, those are the major reasons, again, why special agents with the alcohol, tobacco firearms and explosives or the atf are out here in just about two hours. they bring with them extensive experience with complex fire scenes and access to dogs trained specifically to detect accelerant. it's vital to determine whether this was arson. some agents were out here last thursday, but they had to wait for engineers to make sure the scene was safe enough for investigators to take a closer look. one tidbit that led to suspicion of arson is the security guard on duty at the time of the fire said three young men harassed him and chased him off the property that was right before the fire. investigators are also taking a look at b.a.r.t. security camera footage hopefully to find some clues into what happened here. live in west oakland, stephanie
