as we begin spending more time having fun in the sun, take aim at all those annoying little bugs that can ruin your outdoor experience. >> accidental housewife julie edelman is here to help get rid of those unwanted pests. and we're not talking about your family. >> bed bugs first. they are the rage, so to speak, right now. they look like ticks, only about 1/4 of an inch big. which you can see on the screen right there. and they're ugly. but the way to find out if you have them, they're hitchhikers. if you go someplace, they come home with you. if you see little red dots like blood on your bed, that is a good sign you have bed bugs. also if you have the little bites. now, it's not hard to get rid of these things. okay? one of the things is you want to use -- you can steam them off. but you have to use a really good steamer like this one from bissell, which i like, because you have to get it to a minimum of 150 degrees. the steamer. okay?

they stink. the reason is -- it's sort of protective like a skunk. you don't want to ever squish them. you take a baggy like this. >> what do they look like? do we have a picture of them? >> yes. we have a picture. sorry about that. they look like a little shield. okay? they're shield-like-looking. they're pretty ugly. he they're brown -- >> why do they think so much? >> it's a protection. that's the way they protect themselves. but the way to get rid of them, first of all, use double stick tape and put it in places you know that they can come in. because what they do is they lay their eggs outside but they like to sleep inside. isn't that considerate of them? they love us. and then as another preventative method use a bounce sheet and just go over your screen. a light trap is good. they love light. that will kill them. you can get those at lowe's. >> in reality, you will be pretty much spending your entire summer battling bugs. >> but i have a recipe of love which won't be so bad. mosquitos. they cannot fly in air that's moving. okay? crank up the fan.

another great thing are marigolds. there's a certain scent in there that repels them, which is terrific. plant them around, put them on your patio table. and they're pretty. of course you can try the good old garlic but then you'll stick all day. this one is just for you two. you take basil, which is great repellant for lots of bugs. you put in four ounce of water. then what you do you let it steep so it really saturates. pour out the water. and then, darlings, you add four ounce of vodka. and you put that in a spray bottle. say ah. no. you spray it all over and that will actually repel the mosquitos. if that doesn't work, pour them over ice and they'll take the sting out of any bite you've got. for ants, a great tip here. let's go to the table. because that's a good one. you put cups of water under the legs of your outdoor tables. because as they're climbing up they don't swim and they don't have little floaties. so they'll fall right in. and lastly, fruit flies. don't bother me. they are attracted to red wine as are we. they go in there.
