i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning. oh, how the weather is changing. oddly enough we have showers on the radar so basically what that means for the day is you probably want to grab some sort of protection when it comes to rain gear. we expect rain showers over the greater bay area, however, they will be light, they will be isolated. i'll pinpoint which have the best chance. cool conditions, in the 50s to start, breaking into the 60s and 70s so another cool day and this wet pattern expanding into the weekend so your full forecast around the corner. that's coming up. let's check your drive. >> we'll take you to west of 880 and south of highway 84 we have the traffic flowing pretty nicely but there is an accident so watch that surface street. a major off ramp through fremont. it's not necessarily a cut through to 84.

we're looking at smooth drive on 84, the dumbarton bridge, no problems over the water. 880 north, a smooth drive even the construction heading to 23 sounds like they are clear. back to you. >> mike, thanks. happening right now in the east bay, some bay area parents holding their ground, seven days into a protest to keep their kids' school open. >> they have been camped out at lake view elementary. stephanie chuang is live at the school where parents are to make an announcement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's very quiet out here, of course it is early but there's one person watching for security whereas there had been several. we're told there are ten or so tents, people not only standing their ground, they have more activities including a march for public education tomorrow. this even though there were police warnings earlier this week from the oakland school district, they came to the

school to make sure classrooms were safe and they were not damaged. this was hours after police warned protesters that they had to leave or possibly get arrested. one teacher we spoke with this morning tells us she's not worried. >> yeah, i think people are feeling excited about the school, you know, and getting to see the kids do like a summer school in a building that was supposed to be district offices so i think that's we're more focused on that. of course it's hard for us to see cops come when parents are intimidated by that. i think mostly we see kids being exci excited. that's the best part. >> reporter: they are talking about the summer program for kids, they are teaching art to social justice inside the school building. for the march tomorrow they hold it at noon, they start at the plaza and end up here at lake view elementary. they hope for a couple hundred people.

they will have the details at press conference at 9:00 this morning. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> this morning the bay area couple will be in court to face charges of killing the man they claim was pimping out their teenage daughter. barry gill and lupe were set to enter a plea. they face premeditated murder in the deadly killing of calvin snead on june 4. the attorney says they didn't do it. they are being held on $2 million bail. >> the courtroom will be silent this morning in the william lynch trial. he's the man accused of beating up a priest two years ago. the judge in the case abruptly sent the jury home thursday, then told them to come back monday. no explanation was given and ordered the lawyers not to talk about the delay. lynch admits attacking father lindner saying it was retaliation for lindner molesting him and his brother 35 years ago. during testimony on wednesday

father lindner denied molesting lynch. >> he has also now committed perjury which he did on the stand on thursday, so i think this case should have never come to court. i think it ought to be dismissed now. >> the lawyers have been ordered to return to court this afternoon, possibly to talk about a defense motion to have the case tossed out. >> investigators say they pin pointed the origin of the fire that damaged san francisco's pier 29. the fire started near an electrical box inside the building. construction crews have been working in the area earlier wednesday but officials say they still don't know exactly what started the fire. port officials say it's likely parts of the building will have to be torn down. damage is estimated at nearly $2.5 million. the fire will not impact the america's cup yacht race to use the back portion of the pier for vendors and storage. >> a 7-year-old girl is called a hero after saving her family

from a house fire. the home on dover avenue caught fire on thursday afternoon. smoke detectors were not working and the 7-year-old girl smelled smoke. she yelled for her mother and ran to wake her sleeping aunt. >> i never thought she would be the one that saved us pretty much because if she wouldn't have noticed probably would have been too late. >> everyone escaped unhurt. even the family chihuahua. investigators say the fire was accidental and it started in a closet. >> san jose leaders are coming together to talk about youth violence. mayor chuck reed will be joined by the police chief, members of the gang task force and the fire chief at today's press conference. also in attendance the family of alberto reyes, the 14-year-old killed by suspected gang members back in april. just weeks later another

gang-related shooting left an 18-year-old dead. last week a 17-year-old was killed in a drive-by shooting. this morning's press conference begins at the city hall rotunda. >> a fund-raiser will be held in oakland this morning to benefit the families of two east bay men killed in a boating accident. friends of johnny johnson and acemoore pittman, they were fishing in the delta on saturday. they drowned when their capsized -- their boat capsized. a third man survived. they leave a total of 17 children. today's fund-raiser will be at the morning star missionary baptist church from 11:00 to 7:00. >> a judge charged with stealing from an elderly neighbor continues to sit on the bench and hear cases. he has been reassigned to small

claims court. the judge was arrested last week accused of taking up to $1.6 million from an elderly neighbor in the berkeley hills during a 13-year period. seeman's position as an elected official, he cannot be removed until the criminal case is over. >> the united farm workers are bringing their 50th anniversary celebration to the silicon valley. it was founded back in 1962. chavez began his organizing efforts in san jose to protect the rights of farm workers. the anniversary as the union tries to address the growing number of heat-related deaths of farm workers in the field. they celebrate with a concert at the civic auditorium. >> not too much heat around the bay area now. meteorologist christina loren, the first weekend of summer is here. what's in store? >> well, we've got showers in store for the first weekend of

summer, so basically, we're taking you back to spring. in fact, nm the spring fall transition. temperatures in the 70s but we've got showers on the way. in fact, looks like the greater bay area is going to get measurable precipitation as we head through tonight. temperatures are in the 50s to start you out. 52 degrees in livermore. we're at about 52 degrees in oakland, 47 degrees this morning in santa rosa. throughout the day today, temperatures are going to be on the climb. but this is a big story. the showers on the way. you can see here we are expecting showers up in the north bay. we stop the clock at 4:00 p.m., showers stay in the north bay. enough of the low cloud cover and drizzle to become a problem this morning. you might get your clothes wet so keep that in mind. at 8:00, the greater bay area gets a little bit of shower activity. 65 at noon inland, 72 degrees at 4:00 p.m.

explaining to police his account of what happened when he shot and killed martin in february. police videotaped the meeting as zimmerman walked them through the gated community in sanford, florida. zimmerman pleaded not guilty second-degree murder. >> time to get a check of the markets. we turn to jackie deangelis. good morning. >> good morning. futures point to a higher open after yesterday's sell-off it was the second worst trading day of the year. following reports that manufacturing activity is slowing in the u.s., europe and china, raising concerns about the global economy. oil prices also tumbled as the economy is stalling out, there may be less need for energy. crude at 78 a barrel. moody's would cut ratings on several companies which it did, the agency downgrading 15 banks,

saying that prospects for long term growth are shrinking. the move makes it more expensive for bafrpgs to raise money but since interest rates are already so low it may not make much impact and retail consumers might not notice much difference. the dow plunging to close at 12,573, the nasdaq to close at 2859. a bankruptcy judge postponed a ruling whether american airlines can break its union contracts and in pose cost cuts including thousands of layoffs. the ruling is delayed until next friday to give america and the unions more time to talk. american filed for bankruptcy in november, saying it needs to cut $1 billion a year in labor costs. after picking up last week mortgage rates dropped back to another all-time record low, the average rate on a 30 year fixed loan to 3.66%. the move reflecting a drop on treasury bonds following disappointing economic data. back over to you. >> thank you very much.
