damian trujillo is live at valley medical center with details on the new strategy being announced. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. this new project should be announced in a few days. that announcement should come shortly. it will be here at valley medical center. you're hearing about this for the first time right here on the morning show on nbc bay area, the police department and the mayor admit the gang problem is a major concern. so the plan is to dispatch a team of gang prevention experts to the e.r., when there is a gang-related stabbing or shooting they come in with tools to combat the crime and maybe prevent retaliation, this on the heels after news conference by the mayor and police. they will gather to talk about the growing youth violence, also present will be the family of one of the recent homicide victims. the hope is also to garner more leads in that case and other

gang-related homicide cases. the news conference will follow the weekly meeting of the mayor's gang prevention task force that happens at 7:30 this morning. that's a unit that the mayor has been reluctant to touch in his budget cuts. what you're hearing about for the first time is this new program to send a team of gang-fighting experts here to the emergency room at valley medical center whenever there is a gang-related stabbing or shooting. we'll keep you posted. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. other developing news in san jose, police still at the scene of a deadly motorcycle crash. an 18-year-old was killed and his 18-year-old female passenger injured in a collision at overland way and beckham drive. the cyclist was hit by a toyota. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. investigators say neither person on the cycle was wearing a

helmet. charges are pending against a driver who hit and killed a man standing at a bus stop. the 50-year-old was on the sidewalk at the corner early yesterday when witnesses say he was hit by a speeding audi. flowers left at the scene a tribute to a man his wife says was always looking out for others. >> to me he had like a good heart, always thinking of other people instead of himself. >> the driver also went to the hospital. police have not released his name or whether charges will be fired. >> cold case closed. a man convicted of first-degree murder more than seven years after killing his wife. 51-year-old gary swierski was arrested after evidence confirmed a skull found in the mountains was his wife who disappeared. the break in the case came weeks after the cold case unit was

re-established. >> a notorious convict who kidnapped 26 children is free, richard allen shanefeld has been released from prison. the department of corrections announced that he was released to an undisclosed location. in 1976 he kidnapped 26 children and buried them alive in a rock quarry. he tried to get a $5 million ransom but the victims escaped. we spoke with his older brother last week who told us he feels his brother richard poses no threat and is sorry for what he did. >> happening now in oakland, parents versus the police, protest continues to keep an elementary school open that is set for closure. stephanie chuang is live at lake view elementary where parents are in the seventh day of a sit-in. they are determined. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, marla. across the street there is a police officer with the oakland

school district that's similar to what we've seen other mornings across from lake view elementary. it is his usual shift but not locati location. the protesters here at the sit-in. no major police activity since monday when officers came and warned protesters to leave or get arrested. there was no time table for enforcement. a teacher this morning tells me that's not her concern. she has been here since friday and will stay to fight for the kids. >> seeing that these kids who are in situations that might not be in communities that are struggling already to see their schools destabilized impacts the community even further. >> reporter: five area schools have been slated for shutdown but teachers, parents, reopened the building to kids for an unofficial summer camp. tomorrow at noon they are holding a march for public

education. they hope for a couple hundred people so they are not slowing down and they are going to hold a press conference with all of the details on their plans today at 9:00 this morning. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> more than two weeks after the election in prop 29 t cigarette tax is in limbo. the secretary of state's office is tallying thousands of absentee ballots that will decide if it becomes law. if voters approve the measure it would generate estimated $735 million a year for research and prevention programs. it would add $1 to each pack of cigarettes. here are the latest numbers. 49.7% of voter say yes to the measure, 50.3% say no. in terms of location, san francisco, alameda and santa clara counties voted yes on prop 29 but might not be enough.

>> scott mcgrew says he lost his voice. >> we mean lost his voice in a literal way. he's sick but we don't know more. google says page will not appear at next week's google conference and did not speak at yesterday's google shareholder conference. because he is voiceless. he's communicating via e-mail. we don't know much more about what is going on. google meanwhile, approved the shareholders did t the stock split we talked about. this means future shares will not have voting rights. it gives the founders power to rule forever because they will have a majority of the votes. the split will not be until fall at the earliest. busy for investors, russell index makes changes once a year. last year it meant 10 million shares moved all around on the market.

all of this coming after a heck of a day thursday, jackie surveys the damage for us. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. the futures pointing to a higher open on wall street after yesterday's sell-off, the second worst trading day of the year. stocks selling off following reports that showed manufacturing activity is slowing in the u.s., europe and china, raising concerns about the global economy. oil prices tumbling. if the economy is stalling there may be less need for energy. crude near $78 a barrel today. and bank stocks punished on reports that moody's would cut ratings on am some of the company, downgrading 15 banks including bank of america saying that prospects are shrinking. the move makes it more expensive to raise money by selling debt to investors but since rates are so low it may not make that much impact. the dow to close at 12,573, the

people do that a lot. it's one of those days where you want to make sure you are focused completely. we've got slick conditions out there. and rain on the way. we haven't had rain for some time so all of that oil on the highway, yeah, going to become very, very quick as we head throughout this afternoon. in the north bay we expect most of the activity. 53 in san francisco, good morning to you, you made it to friday. we've got a good looking weekend shaping up especially if you're sick of the heat and you want to give your ac a break. all the way through next week for the most part temperatures much cooler. i want to start with the doppler. mostly dry. i have this cranked all the way up even to pick up drizzle. mostly dry but look at what's to our north. that's moderate rain showers. this is going to fall apart as it moves through but not before we get a little action.

10:00 a.m. that's when we get steady rainfall in the north bay, sonoma to marin a little activity. by 4:00 p.m. it starts to get more active between 4:00 and 9:00, some showers from novato to fremont. throughout the remainder of the evening, showers in the south bay, enough for our air quality and maybe measurable precipitation here in san jose. that's good news. don't wash your cars yet. 72 in fremont. we hold on to comfortable conditions. 73 by monday, staying cool at the start of next week when we meet back here, let's talk to mike about your drive. >> we'll look at the south bay, northbound route, the sensors fine. i want to point out on 85. we have crews blocking two lanes at times. looking to the on and off ramp. we've seen that remain there. we're up to about 6:00, 6:30 so

we'll watch for that. we don't know each morning but it will probably be clear before 7:00. looking at 101 with a smooth drive, we do have construction right around marsh but not a full freeway closure, just lanes restricted. and your crew going east over to the fremont and newark side. 280, an easy drive in. 101 from the north across the golden gate bridge. look at that. a lot of folks, the weekend for marches and a lot of activity so keep that in mind. you'll see a lot of disruptions. tonight, saturday and sunday as well, with all of the activity so keep that in mind. out to the east bay, smooth into and out of city, then paving work cleared up off the berkeley curb and your commute is nice down the east shore freeway as

>> welcome back. a good friday morning to you. waking up with a live look outside this morning. cooler temperatures are prevailing. yes, we are finally in summer. changes as well in the forecast. 5:24. >> cabinet members traded in suits and blouses for basketball jerseys to mark the for 0th anniversary of title 9 with a celebrity basketball game. the u.s. secretary of education arnie duncan and several cabinet members took to the court for basketball. fans were treated to a strong performance by the secretary of health and human services kathleen sebelius and several others. they were joined by several women's basketball players from local universities and local school children.

kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning, ending gang violence in san jose. this morning the city will launch an innovative new program aimed at ending gang-related violence. damian trujillo live at valley medical with details of the new strategy. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they plan to flood dmc with gang fighting experts. the announcement you're hearing here is for the first time on nbc bay area comes on the heels of a news conference at 9:00 this morning by the mayor and police to discuss the growing concern of gang violence. at 9:00 they will be joined by other first responders and the families of the victim in a gang-related homicide. with me now here on nbc bay area is mario, the superintendent of the mayor's gang prevention task force. give us briefly what the plan is. >> the plan is take the

opportunity that presents itself. it's always a tragic incident when a youth is shot or stabbed in our communities but it's even more tragic when we don't take the opportunity to visit them in the first 48 hours at bed side and talk about the opportunity for change and hope for a better future. we partnered with valley medical center where we'll be responding to every shooting and stabbing for youth in our community that's gang related. and maximizing that opportunity to share our resources and plant a seed that will sprout into change and hopefully prevent retaliate. >> you call it a bedside pilot program? >> at this point we haven't given it a name. yeah, it's much like youth alive in oakland. >> thank you, the superintendent of the gang prevention task

force. he will make a presentation to see if they give him the green light. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:33. happening now in the east bay, some school parents s enteringe second week after process to save their kids' school. they plan to announce their next step in a few hours. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are planning a march tomorrow in hopes of rallying for public education. they passed ot this flyer which says they need to defend this sit-in that protects public education for the kids. they call for a mass mobilization of support, warned the protesters that they may be arrested if they didn't leave school grounds. but they say they are going to stay for as long as it takes to reopen. the five schools the district

voted to shut down and fight for the students they believe are underserved. >> wanting to see quality education for black and brown youth in the district. that's what the attack is on, all of the schools, four of the five schools were predominantly black and the fifth latino. >> reporter: a spokesman for the district told us earlier there was no time table for police enforcement. really a sticky situation considering it's not only parents and teachers here but some kids as well. as for the march tomorrow at around noon, they planned for a couple hundred people march over to grand avenue. they will have a press conference at 9:00. live in oakland, stephanie chuang. >> the two men charged in the beating of bryan stow will be arraigned in a few hours. a good has now ruled there is enough evidence to try the pair

for the brutal assault on stow of last year. during a 6-day hearing there was dramatic testimony about that attack. stowe suffered severe brain damage. >> a bay area couple will face charges of killing the man they claim was their daughter's pimp. they are set to enter a plea today. they say premeditated murder charges, the couple's attorney says they didn't do it. the couple is held on $2 million bail each. >> court canceled this morning in the trial of william lynch, a man accused of beating up a priest two years ago. the judge in the case abruptly sent the jury home thursday and told them to bum pack monday.

father lindner's denial on the stand that he ever touched lynch is weighing on the judge's mind according to the defense. >> he is also now committed perjury which he did on the stand on thursday, so i think this case should have never come to court to begin with and i think it ought to be dismissed now. >> the lawyers have been ordered to return to court this afternoon, possibly to talk about a defense motion to have the case tossed out. >> investigators pinpointed the origin of the point of a fire. they say it started near an' leak trickle box. construction crews had been working in that area earlier wednesday but don't know exactly what started that fire. likely parts will have to be torn down. damage is estimated at $2.5 million. the fire is not said to have impacted next year's america's cup yacht race said to use it

for storage. >> a fund-raiser to benefit the families of two east bay men killed in a boating accident. friends johnny johnson of hayward and acemoore pittman were fishing saturday. they drowned when their boat capsized tossing them into the water. a third man survived. johnson and pittman leave a total of 17 children. the fund-raiser will be at the morning star missionary baptist church. >> time to check that forecast with christina loren. >> we're looking good. good morning. we have a great looking weekend especially inland. taking a live look outs from high adop top san bruno mountain. we've got showers on the way. 56 in sunnyvale. 51 in san mateo and 53 in san

5:42. turning to decision 2012. today, president obama heads to florida to try to win over the same latino leaders that mitt romney addressed yesterday. "today in the bay's" claire lacka is live in washington, d.c. this morning with a look at how the immigration debate will sway voters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. that is right. president obama will be heading to orlando, florida later today, he is going to try to capitalize on latino voter enthusiasm. this has been sparked by his recent shift in his immigration policy. now, he's going to make his pitch on immigration reform today and it's to the same group that mitt romney addressed yesterday. romney told those hispanic

leaders he would address the problem of illegal immigration in a civil but resolute manner. it was a far cry from the sometimes aggressive stance he has taken on illegal immigration, especially during the primaries. now, obama campaign supporters wasted no time taking advantage of that with a new ad painting romney in a negative light. obama is still basking in the glow of his week-old immigration policy to let illegal immigrants under 30 stay in the country if they don't have a criminal record and have earned g.e.d.s or high school diplomas. romney tried to attack the president's stance on immigration directly. he says that despite obama's promises he has failed to address immigration reform. the game plan for team obama today is build mo momentum.

we're live in washington. marla, back to you. >> thank you. more evidence coming to light in the case involving neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman. his defense team released video of investigators questioning zimmerman about the night that trayvon martin was killed. it shows zimmerman at the scene explaining his account of what happened. police videotaped the meeting as zimmerman walked them through the community in stanford, florida. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty. >> the video of an elderly bus monitor being pulleyed created outrage. >> 68-year-old karen klein caught on camera enduring a barrage of obscenities and insults. she works as a monitor for the school district near rochester, new york. the kids on the bus are middle

schooler. at one point she was in tears. she says response has been overwhelming. >> i'm getting the nicest letters, e-mails, facebook messages. and like wow, there is a whole world out there i didn't know. it's really awesome. >> the campaign to send klein on vacation raised nearly $500,000 now in a few days. san francisco-based website is facilitating the outpouring of support. jurors deciding the state of a football coach will be back in court. the panel wants to review the testimony of two witnesses. chris pollone is live in bellefonte, pennsylvania and joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. jurors will be back at it in a few minutes. they were added late last night and obviously in this case the

verdict is going to hinge on what they were allowed to hear and not hear. a lot of new information the jurors will never be privy to. the jurors requested that the judge allow them to review testimony of former accident mcqueary and a family friend. as the panel debated the case's merit new developments outside the courtroom. one of jerry sandusky's adopted sons, the son matt, revealed he was prepared to testify against his father claiming he was also the victim of sexual abuse. more information coming out last night and this morning from a new accuser who has spoke within a grand jury here, he told nbc that he, too, was abused by

the south bay. we see slowing one 101 and 17 shows a blip but that one likely will clear. the 101 probably here to stay. the construction zone should be clearing soon. we'll follow that throughout the south day. peninsula construction should be clearing from 101 up the peninsula around marsh. traffic is smooth into the 60s close to the limit there as well as 84 over to the fremont and newark side. on the other side of the bay, astro valley eye, also san mateo bridge. but again you're ot the limit so that's great but look at these folks coming over to the area. heading over to airway, it's got the 58 so you're at the -- a 17-drive out of the altamont pass. north of there we're following this, that sigalert continues,

it gets slim and watch, i'll fold it down like that. this one also has a solar panel in the back. it's so you never have to charge the keyboard. they usually need some sort of separate battery. i will tell you the big myth here is that the solar panel doesn't charge your ipad which you think it would. for $130 or whatever it is, that's a hot. it does turn your ipad into a lap top which is really convenient. i have since dumped my lap top. what, a buck 29 to charge for the year. very cool. >> we'll have to try that out. >> i'll take it. give me the leftovers. time to check the forecast. no one's going to comment. >> you don't deserve the leftover, sunshine. >> none of us on this show do.
