what's left of a big rig fire. christie smith is live in oakland at the scene with what is happening right now. christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. there is an improvement in the situation, and that is that two lanes are back open on the freeway off ramp, this is northbound 880 at market street near west oakland. now, what happened a little earlier is that a big rig caught fire. if we can pan over here, you can see the front of the cab there. i spoke briefly with the driver, and what he's saying is that he picked up a load from long beach and was heading to the port of oakland and driving and he heard a boom sound. he decided to pull over, see what was going on. then the engine started smoking and caught fire. fortunately he was able it to get out, but during that time, firefighters arrived here in oakland. they had to shut down the ramp so that they could put the fire out. now, they've been trying to talk with him about what he's carrying. he's not sure, but it doesn't

seem to be dangerous and no fuel leaks, that sort of thing. they have called a tow truck in, but i just spoke with a chp officer who tells me that it may take a little longer than they initially thought because the front end is in such bad shape. it will take about 30 minutes to get a tow truck out here, and then maybe another 30 to disconnect it and get the wreckage out of here. so he's saying maybe an hour now. so certainly something to keep in mind. chp is telling me when they first arrived there was a backup going all the way to 980. that's improved now, but this situation now again i'm hearing will remain like this for at least the next hour. that's the latest from here reporting live in oakland a, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we'll check in with mike for the morning commute. absolutely. not everyone can get over to the london for the big olympic games going on, but you don't have to go too far to economic out the excitement. >> fans can see future u.s.

"today in the bay" is live at hp pavilion this morning with more on today's action including an interview with an olympic gold medalist. good morning, mara. >> reporter: not doing too bad this morning. the day that these athletes have been waiting for is finally here. tomorrow the olympic trials at hp pavilion finally gets under way. joining us this morning, though, is shawn johnson, an olympic gold med allist beijing 2008. thanks so much. it's great to meet you this morning. >> thanks for having me. >> let's start with the idea that just within the last three weeks you had to retire because of your ongoing knee injury. i know a lot of fans i'm sure disappointed unable to see you compete this time around. >> yeah. it was a tough decision, but at the end of the day we sat down and faced reality that we ran out of time. i wasn't ready, and my knee wasn't going to allow me to go any further. so gracefully retired and let

another girl take my spot. >> you're here still nonetheless so supportive as always. talk about the trials, the next four days. what are these athletes up against? >> definitely supportive. these are like my sisters and i've grown up with them. the next four days are more intense more so than the olympics. if they're not here, they don't make the team. that's definitely at the forefront of their mind, and they can feel that. i think it's going to be a great competition. >> no doubt that this place is going to be packed. does that help out to see a packed house? >> definitely. the support of the crowd is so great for the girls. they feed off the adrenaline and excitement. what's better than having a full arena? >> reporter: with the pressure of the olympics ahead, how does one deal with that? >> it's what we live for. it's the competition. it's the excitement. i mean, it's kind of what we practice and train to do. over the years they've gotten used to it. it's something that comes with it. >> reporter: you have been active since you were a little

shark attack in hawaii. 16-year-old sage sinclair was swimming with her father in maui yesterday morning when the shark bit her. they were about 10 to 15 feet offshore in shallow water only 3 to 4 feet deep. the grenada high school teenagers had an injury to her left calf. >> my husband felt something hit his back, and it went quickly. then i heard sage scream. >> yeah, she heard her scream. authorities posted shark warning signs, closed a portion of that beechl. sage's mother says her daughter is doing just fine. she's actually tweeting about that attack to her friends. shark aattacks are rare in hawaii and pretty rare globally. about 100 shark attacks are reported every year. there were 17 reported deaths in all of last year throughout the world. here in the u.s. we average 16 aattacks every year with 1 death

a tow truck arrived on scene. we hoped it would be here within the last half hour, so it is arriving. now another 40 minutes. there's damage to the truck itself and there may be trailer damage. if they can't tow it, it may cause a delay and closure of the off ramp again. we look at 880 and the traffic flows nicely up to the scene and the market street off ramp is open. we show a flow of traffic for 880 approaching the area as well past the coliseum. it if this takes more than a half hour, this could be a big problem. we'll track it. back to you. it is history in the making, albeit dubious history, stockton on the brij nk of becoming the largest city to fail financially going down today. they approved a bankruptcy budget last night, including more dealt defaults and wage and benefit cuts. the chapter 9 filing could come this morning. they will spend three months negotiating with creditors to

wm welcome back, everyone. there was a massive truck fire there this morning. it's taking a while to clean it up. it's behind this big rig and tow it out of the area this morning, but it making for a commute nightmare this morning. we will check in with mike in moments to get an update. new this morning in syria, a gunman broke into a pro-government tv statement, seven employees right now reported dead. the gunman bombed some buildings. the tv station resuming broadcasts shortly after that attack.

it is privately owned, but it's also seen a mouthpiece for the syrian government. assad declaring that country right now is at war. that announcement coming late tuesday. microsoft's offices in athens, greece were firebombed. police say that someone drove a van through the front doors of the building early this morning. it was set on fire. no one was injured in that attack. greece has seen similar attacks by small domestic terrorist groups for actually decades. a dramatic rescue of more than 100 people after their boat capsized in the indian ocean overnight. a wild scene. the boat was full of asylum seekers heading for australia. we have pictures of the people on top of that capsized boat just waiting for help. one person ended up dying in the accident. australia's prime minister ordering two war ships and a military aircraft to go out to the site. australia is a common destination for boats carrying

asylum seekers from afghanistan, iraq, and other poor or war-torn countries. congress is very busy this morning as they have had many deadlines to meet by this weekend. lawmakers need to take final votes on bills such as transportation, flood insurance and student loans, money that funds 2 million transportation jobs runs out this week if congress does not pass a new highway bill by saturday. democrats say republicans are holding up a federal flood insurance vote. that program ends next month if nothing is agree od on. a deal to stop interest from doubling is close to an agreement with the president's stamp of approval. >> we have to make higher education affordable for every young person building to work for it. >> in addition to all this, a vote is expected tomorrow on whether to hold attorney general eric holder in contempt for withholding some documents related to a gun-running investigati investigation. two up, two down, the giants wrapping up the three-game

you can see showers will make their way into the bay area today and not going to happen. high pressure moves in quickly and nudges the storm track to the north and keep our conditions very comfortable. we stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. and clear conditions at the coast and a beautiful day to hit the beach or ballpark. if you have tickets, bring your broom with you because you need it. we'll sweep those giants today. 12:45, 68 degrees and breezy conditions and boy, oh, boy this is a sweep we want. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures are like this. i like calls it san jose sometimes like a local. 87 degrees today. up in santa rosa, we shave off 5 to 8 degrees through tomorrow. if it's a little too hot for you today, tomorrow will be more comfortable. by friday, 80 degrees and then the upper 70s in the forecast for sartd and sunday. then things start to change. as we head through next week, we have a strong ridge of high pressure on the way and nudge

temperatures up to 90 degrees on wednesday and closer to 100 at the end of next week. enjoy tranquil conditions while they last. >> in the south bay in san jose showing slowing nolt of 680 traveling to 880. the build and clearing for 87, expect the build towards downtown. the theme for the day seems to be car fires, non-injury car fires as best we can tell. a new one now, and no slowing. this is out of lanes. a distraction because we follow the earlier one for the edone canyon that cleared from 580 and this is off northbound 880 getting off of there. let's get a live picture and see how the work continues as the big rig tow truck is on the scene here. we see the rig behind it and the burned-out shell and this it lane is blocked leaving one of two -- leaving only two or three lanes left at the market street offramp. a light volume so far.

880 not a problem. we track this and the problem. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much for the update there. a judge blocking all sales of samsung's galaxy tablet in the united states. the junction is temporary but in effect right now while the court tries to decide if the tablet is a complete ripoff of the ipad design. the judge points out that apple has built a very strong case. he goes to say the companies' two tablets virtually indistinguishable. samsung says it's disappointed with the court's decision. why wouldn't they be? that ruling is a small part of a larger patent battle between two tech giants scheduled to go to trial next month in san jose. do analysts like facebook or not? that's the question, and today we should finally find out the answer. the 30-day quiet period concludes for analysts at the banks that were underwriters of facebook's ipo. major wall street firms are barred from putting out analyst

san francisco, and flag barely flapping, low wind, temperatures rising. going to be another good one. it's 6:25. the love the bay and beach. pollution at the beach at its third highest level in 22 years. the national resources defense council is releasing its annual beach water report this morning. it looked over 3,000 beaches nationwide. how are california beaches faring? tracie potts is live to tell us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. some good, some not so good according to this nrdc report. when they added up all the days last year that there were advisories, there were over 23,000 days. we get the details coming up in an hour, but in terms of the violations, the most egregious violations until the midwest and great lakes region, the least right here in the mid-atlantic region. those beaches last year that got 12 star ratings for having low

violations and good notification systems to the public include california's newport beach and huntington state beach all down in orange county. there were some repeat offenders in california as well. these are beaches that were on the list for five years or more for having violations. more than a quarter of the time avalon beach in l.a. and tahame beach in orange county made that list. we'll get the new one in an hour or so. in the meantime the nrdc says a couple of things to keep in mind is to heed those advisories when they're out, and not to swim at the beach 72 hours after a rainstorm. a lot easier for the bacteria and other things found in the water then. laura. >> thank you very much. 6:26 right now. christina is always ef ves sent and a little extra jock layer rit with the win around here. >> that's with the combination with the two-game win against the dodgers. let's beat l.a. today, giants.

you made it halfway through the work week. it's wednesday, june 27th. this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 6:31. i'm laura garcia-cannon. i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news this morning out of oakland. mike has been talking about it all morning long. a big rig fire in the east bay that threatened the morning commute is now out. christie smith is live at the scene where the situation is resolved but causing traffic issues. good morning, christie. >> reporter: the tow truck arrived here about 20 minutes ago. i just walked up the hill and spoke briefly with the driver. he's got the cab hooked up to the back of his tow truck, but he hasn't pulled it out yet because he's pulling off all of the burned parts. there are quite a few burned parts. there it really isn't much left, but he hopes to get this out of here soon.

what happened -- i spoke briefly with the driver in morning, and he says he was coming up from long beach and on 880 northbound he heard a boom sound coming from his engine. he pulled over and saw smoke. i talked with his son. he said that there was actually a fire extinguisher inside the cab, but it caught fire so fast he had no time to put it out. so the front end of the cab completely burned up this morning. now, in the actual 40-foot container, the truck driver says he's not sure exactly what he's hauling. he believes this is going to walmart, but he got off here and this is where everything sat. when firefighters arrived they had to completely shut down the ramp here at northbound 880 and market because they had to bring in all their trucks and put this out. that fire was contained. they opened up two lanes, and what's happening now is that once they pull the cab out of here, i spoke with the driver's son. he's a truck driver as well. he's going to go aahead and bring in another cab, and then pull the actual truck out of

here. so they're hoping to get things moving soon. maybe another 20 minutes or so is what they're telling us. that's the latest from here reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." more key rulings in a san jose courtroom where a man is on trial for staulting a retired priest. william lynch admits aattacking father linder two years ago p at a retirement home in los gatos. lynch said it was in retaliation for linder sexually abusing he and his brother nearly 40 years ago. the judge in the case says he will not hear testimony from lynch's niece who claims linder abused her as well. >> if i were to testify, he would be in there, and i wanted, you know, him to have to face me. >> the judge has thrown out father linder's testimony after he decided to take the fifth. lynch could take the stand later this week. this morning we're learning more about a violent death that rocked an upscale east bay city.

they arrested a 62-year-old man for killing his long-time girlfriend on tuesday in the kitchen of a home on maraga way. officers point out they arrested the man after he ran to a neighbor's house to call police. officers say the murder weapon was dropped between the two houses, but so far they are not confirming what type of weapon that actually is. the name of the 51-year-old victim has not been released. this marks the first homicide in orinda in about a decade. pg&e says the cause of the san bruno pipeline explosion lies deep in the past. the utility says a strength test done on the gas pipeline back in 1956 is ultimately to blame. the company says an already defective weld was damaged during the test, and more than 50 years later it burst triggering the explosion. nevertheless state regulators question that claim and accuse pg&e of never doing such a test in the first place. in a statement the president of

joining me live this mornt is david durante. you were the 2007 u.s. all-around champi. you actually clenched that title right here at hp pavilion. so it's certainly a senltmental thing to be here today. >> it is. i'm a stanford alumni so i know the bay area really well. to be back here is special. >> reporter: what's your role for the next four or five days? >> i do a lot of media for the u.s. gymnastics and doing in-house radio with shannon miller, one of the most decorated female gymnasts in history. >> sort of a play by lay? >> to give the in-house crowd an idea what to look for. to make sure they know where their eyes should be. >> can you give us a little knowledge right now as a fan? >> sure. right now we had our u.s. championships two weeks ago in st. louis, and we kind of had a great idea of what to look for this weekend. we had on the men's side so much depth, young depth which is rare this time around. we have the top three guys all

her? >> you need to be calm. >> nobody has a key. nobody has a key. they might be up there. >> i don't know what to tell you. i cannot let you go up there right now. >> firefighters have only been able to contain 5% of the waldo canyon fire. that blaze is one of a dozen burning throughout colorado. >> that hol weather making it so tough for the firefighters, and international news over in syria a massacre at a pro-government tv station, gunmen breaking in killing seven employees and setting off explosives. tv station did resume broadcasting shortly after the attack. this tv station is privately owned but seen as a mouthpiece for the syrian government. after the attack syrian president assad declaring the country is at war. microsoft offices in athens, greece badly damaged by a firebomb, and police say someone drove a van through the front doors of the building this morning. the van was set on fire. no one was injured in the attack. greece has had similar attacks

by small domestic terrorist groups for decades. a restaurant in japan, fukushima prefecture are serving local seafood for the first time since last year's nuclear disaster. limited fishing off the coast has resumed on a trial basis. no radiation has been detected in the catch, and it went on sale just yesterday. restaurants, though they've been forced to import octopus from other regions since that big-time accident, at the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant in march of last year. 6:48. funeral plans are pending this morning for one of the country's most beloved authors and screen writers. nora ephron died after battling cancer, she wrote and directed sleepless in seattle and when harry met sally and she lost her battle with leukemia yesterday. she was 71 years old.

>> we look at a slower drive for the south bay folks, nobody 101 past capitol. speeding into the 30s and 20s. 30s and 40s, not yet to 20s up towards 880. here we have slowing from capitol expressway for highway 87 into downtown and continuing up just north of 280. expect 280 and 85 to follow suit. probably over the next half hour just after 7:15 is when we expect to see slowing and a lighter, easier build for wednesday. this is an issue all morning. we have a number of car fires and this one is 280 at hickey boulevard. no slowing on that route, but we had that car fire that is now over on the shoulder. a burned car there. a little distraction. over here we're looking at a burned car removed from the roadway. this is westbound 24, but look at all the slowdown and distraction it caused. 680 out of concord. this earlier accident involving a motorcycle, all activity off to the shoulder at university for westbound east shore freeway. that's your commute direction, and that's slow from san pablo past down the scene. we continue to follow this, the

truck fire that is now clearing from market street. we saw that big rig clear. we end with the map here. we have progress, so christie brings us the update in a few minutes. san jose state university trying to track down a hacker responsible for unleashing thousands of students' personal information out onto the worldwide web. a security breach was on the associated students website server, now more than 22,000 students' contact information may have been exposed. the hacker even bragged about it on the breach out on twitter and dumped sensitive information including passwords and user names onto the site online. the san jose state says what first appeared to be a social security number leak, they're actually student i.d. numbers. >> i would hope they would have firewalls or up-to-date protection to keep our information safe, because everything we do is online.

>> we can tell you a security firm is advising students to be on the lookout for he maehls asking for information. new protections for vintage bay area vineyards. they will pay 14,000 to a nonprofit group to launch a program to preserve grapevines, so at least 60 years ago old. there is 15 commercial grape growers in oakley. a number of them center vintage vines. school crossing guards are now off that chopping block in concord. the city budget passing last night. that includes funding for the guards. the city kouncouncil voting unanimously to sub sid dies the school districts to pay for 12 crossing guards at intersections across the entire city. the city still has to resolve a 10-ten year deficit of $3.5 million. >> 6:53, new this morning, menlo park police are on the lookout for a mising elderly with

alzheimer's who wandered aaway from home. we have a photo of 75-year-old midge matsumura. she left between 2:00 and 5:00 this morning. if you spot her, call 911. a scary start to a hawaiian vacation when a shark attacks a livermore teen in shallow water. i didn't think that video was what we needed. we're talking about a 16-year-old by the name of sage st. clair. she was swimming with her father in front of the resort in maui yesterday morning when the shark came right up and actually bit her. they were in water about 10 to 15 offshore and the water was 3 to 4 feet deep. the grenada high school steen surfs a 4 to 5-inch gash in her left calf. we had a chance to speak to sage's mother kim st. clair by phone. >> my husband felt something hit his back, and then the next thing it kind of went quickly. then i heard sage scream.

>> she heard sage scream there. authorities posting shark warnlgs signs and closed a portion of the beach. saij's mother says her daughter is doing fine. she tweeted about that attack to all of her friends. we're happy to hear about that. shark attacks rare in hawaii and rare globally. only about 100 shark attacks reported each and every year. there were 17 reported reported globally. we average 16 attacks each year and only one death ever two years. dna recovered from a cigarette butt could self a decades old bay area murder. they think 58-year-old charles luckett killed a manager of a sizzler restaurant during a robbery attempt. he insists he was out of town at the time, but investigators say the dn evidence and i witness accounts link him to the murder.

we could hear from the defendant in the high profile south bay trial will yaj lynch admits he attacked father lindner. he said it was in retaliation for lindner molesting him and ms. brother nearly 40 years ago. the judge in this case will not hear testify from lynch's niece who claims lindner abused her as well. the judge has thrown out father lindner's testimony after he decided to take the fifth. lynch could take the stand by the end of the week. 6:56. stockton is on the brink of becoming the largest american city to fail today. city leaders approved a bankruptcy budget last night that includes more debt defaults, wage and benefit cuts. the chapter 9 file ko come as early as this morning. stockton spent three months negotiating with creditors trying to resolve the $26 million deficit. it defaulted on $2 million since

february. breaking news out of the east bay. what's left of the big rig fire that caused a big-time traffic jam on the freeway and off ramp is now being cleaned up. christie snit is live in oakland at this point. she's at the scene with the latest. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morninmorning. they towed the burned cab and trailer out as well. the lane is basically clear, but it's not open yet. the chp said there was a little bit of oil that spilled out, so now they're working on the cleanup. they want to get this clean, because the off ramp here goes down, and they're afraid someone might skid. they want to get that cleaned up, and they may be calling cal trans out here to help with that. they think another 20 minutes or so the. what happened earlier is a big rig driver going northbound from long beach basically is saying that he heard a boom sound coming from his engine. he started to pull off to see what was going on, and the engine caught fire. he got out okay, but the oakland
