i heard you say cookie cutter day. >> carbon copy. temperature will be a degree or two cooler in some locations but we'll starting off pretty mild this morning. clouds move in overnight acted as insulation at the surface. a very mild start to 60 already in san francisco. oakland, livermore as well. sanyo say at 62 to start the day. same for santa rosa. we had clouds that made their way through overnight. those clouds are hanging on. we are expecting to get rid of these clouds. really just a few low stratus clouds moving through the bay area. wind shifting to more offshore so that means things will warm up up. as you look at that vantage point from space, not much cloud cover in open water. we're expecting to see plenty of sunshine in the afternoon. 78 in san jose today. 77 in los gatos.

cooler in ail ma er ier in alam. giants game, temperature will be nice and comfortable and wind won't be too gusty so not much hope carrying that ball out. >> sounds like a day to get outside and enjoy it. >> definitely. >> thank you very much. new this morning, firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire that ripped through a bay area home. it happened on trinity place and martinez after 11:00 santorum nig -- last night. one woman was treated for an asthma attack. firefighters remain at the scene to check for any hot spots. police are searching for the person who open fire on a car in oakland around 1:00 near 64th and macarthur boulevard. two people were in the car. one was hit and taken to the hospital. that person is expected to survive. the second person was not hurt. a rising star for the san

francisco 49ers is recovering from an injury he suffered off the field. a stabbing at a party at his house sent aldon smith to the hospital. it happened yesterday in the east san jose hills. today we have what neighbors heard and saw and what 49ers' management is saying. >> about 2:00 in the morning, heard a series of rapid gunshots. and then a little while after that, lots of police activity. lots. >> reporter: that's how neighbors describe what happened on higuera highland lane when a party hosted by aldon smith turned violent. the santa clara county sheriff's department says they got a 911 call after 2:00. when they arrived they found two men wounded by gunfire and smith with minor stab wounds. sources tell comcast sportset smith was trying to break up a fight when things got crazy. >> didn't know what was happening until there was a deputy knocking on our door,

interviewing neighbors after that. >> reporter: neighbors say they're stunned. one took these photos of the crime scene as investigators camped out at smith's home, trying to figure out what sparked the violence and who was responsible. late this afternoon, the 49ers' general manager released a statement saying, we are in contact with aldon and thankful that his injuries were not more serious. and that he is recovering comfortably. meanwhile, 22-year-old smith, who made a franchise rookie record 14 sacks last season, seems to be having trouble off the field. he was arrested on a dui charge in january and now this. >> that was jody hernandez reporting. neighbors say thint is the first time smith has had a large party but the first time we know know of things going ugly. no party goers can tell police who was responsible for the shooting or tabbing.

a shooting happened yesterday morning short after after an armed robbery at a convenience store. officers say the suspect got away in a white suv and chased him until it crashed. the driver ran away and police say he refused to surrender and police a they shot in self-defense killing the man. friends and family posted flyers ayesterday before heading out for another search on the bay. 27-year-old victor murillo was seen near pier 32 after a giants game. a friend says he looked up from sending a text and he was gone. they think he may have fallen into the bay. saturday morning someone reported what could have been a body in the water it was a false alarm. >> it's just a difficult time for us because having to find

him in the water, but not wanting to find him in the water. we're not here to stop until we get some sort of evidence or closure and our heart set. all that's been possible for us. >> extensive searches from the water and air have revealed nothing so far. some of the people who fled the most destructive wildfire in colorado history will see their burned out homes today. they'll be allowed back into devastated neighborhoods near colorado springs temporarily. that fire destroyed 350 homes and blackened 26 square miles. firefighters have half contained. in northern california, crews expect to are a fire there fully contained by today. ee welcome ba evacuation orders have been lifted. that's turned about twice the size of the city of oakland and destroyed nearly 260 homes. in utah some folks are getting to go back into the fire zone to see if there was

anything left to salvage from wildfires there. yesterday residents sifted through the rubble in their burned homes and described it as being on a different planet. nothing left but burnt dirt. utah disaster help line and red cross are helping those affected by the wildfires. in con that costa fire resources will be spread nor thinly. 15 fires will be laid off president the downtown brentwood, bethel island and knights and fire houses would have stayed open if voters approved a parcel tax but that didn't happen. the remaining three stations will cover an extra 250 square miles. be prepared to bring extra change next time you ride public transportation. muni fares are going up today. a monthly costs will go up $2. ferry rates are going up by 5%. expect to pay an extra quarter

good morning, everyone. welcome back to the program. ten minutes after 7:00. you're looking live out over the hills in san jose. san jose getting a lot of national attention this weekend. the finals of the olympic championship trials will wrap up today in san jose with the much anticipated women final. last night it was all about the men. kimberly terry was there and has highlights from last night's competition and as well as when we can expect to see today.

sunday morning. looking life at oakland this morning. a little overcast but rumor has it things will clear today. for the facts, let's check in with anthony slaughter and our sunday forecast. >> i like how you put that. rumor does have it we'll are clear skies. good morning, nbc bay area weather center, and clouds that rolled overhead acted as insulation so temperature are starting off 10 degrees in some locations warmer than they would be. san francisco, typically at 50, this morning already at 60 degrees. sunnyvale at 61. not a bad start considering yesterday some of us got into the 80s. we've cooled nicely. a nice morning, perhaps, get a jog in before it really gets toasty. you'll notice the skies clear, especially offshore. as we head through the day, the low stratus continues to form offshof to the north. if you live in the bay bay area,

you know those northerly winds will warm us up. speak of warm, another day of excessive heat across the mid-mississippi valley stretching over to new jersey. looks like temperatures again will top out in the 90s and triple digits across the deep south. really for about the fifth to sixth day in a row now. there are also the chance for thunderstorms in this yellow-shaded area. you may recall a couple days ago with all the internet problems, with netflix and pinterest, those thunderstorms rolled over to washington, d.c. and again we're talking about the same thing happening once again for today. here at home, quiet weather. really couldn't complain about much other than the fog waking up to this morning. by the afternoon hours, we're going to clear out to plenty of sunshine. tomorrow as those winds start to turn out of the north, that's when we're going to warm back to the mid to upper 80s and looks like the fourth of july remains dry and warm. it's all because of this area of high pressure starting to slide in. we had a trough move through

last night. that's where we have those clouds in place and that area of low pressure trying to make its way out of the region. as we head through the day today again, skies will eventually clear, so we have to deal with this morning fog in place. after 9:00, 10:00, things will clear out. so, today, again as we warm through the day, we are talking about really a comfortable day. 80 for santa rosa. 82 in gilroy. not bad in san francisco either. 68 degrees there. your seven-day forecast just showed things warming quite a bit. in fact, tomorrow, mid-80s, upper 80s as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. if you're making any plans, do make them to be outside because it is going to be spectacular. low humidity, lots of sun. you couldn't complain, especially when the rest of the country is talking about excessive heat and then you have power outages now. a lot of those folks washington, d.c., virginia, even toward chicago don't have air and they're suffering from 100-degree heat. >> and 100-degree heat is different from here when you

factor in the humidity. makes it so much tougher. >> a world of difference. >> thank you. we have more on that situation in east coast where light and power remain out where summer severe storms are causing all types of problems. 13 people are dead and 3 million without power. extremely dangerous situation. since temperatures have hit records, that means people don't have access to air conditioning. francisco h >> reporter: the storm hit with little warning and left a path of destruction across several states. >> lights were flashing, the sky was lit up, the wind was blowing 80 miles an hour. >> reporter: those hurricane-strength winds ripped up trees, downed power lines from indiana to washington, d.c. and left millions without power. >> this is the largest nonhurricane power outage in virginia history. >> reporter: states of emergency have been declared in at least four states as power crews scrambled to restore electricity and air conditioning. in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave.

50 million americans are sweltering in 100-plus degree temperatures. more records were set saturday adding to the 1600 that have been tied or broken this week. >> kind of like an oven. just brutal. >> reporter: in atlanta, an all-time high of 106 prompted people to hit the water. the city opened up seven public pools to the community free of charge. . >> know this is going to be a challenging weekend for families and seniors in particular, so we wanted to make sure that the safety of children and seniors are particularly well taken care of. >> reporter: back in the mid-atlantic, clean-up has begun, as residents cling to hope that power can soon be restored. frances coe, san francisco news. sailing ships are in boston harbor, taking part in the annual boston harbor fest pipts a week-long festival that includes concerts and chowder

fest and commemorates the bicentennial. one of of the oddest looking planes around is carrying a piece of space history called a super guppie plane and touch down in seattle. inside is an exact replica of the space shuttle cabin. some people who came to watch the plane are amazed this thing even flies. >> it gets bigger and bigger as it gets closer and closer. this is unbelievable. how it flies, i don't know. >> the shuttle cabin will be displayed at nearby museum and visitors can enter the cockpit this fall. coming up on "today in the bay," natalie coughlin had one more chance to head to the olympics. did she do it? ♪

her journey has end ed. 49-year-old endurance swimmer will not be the first to swim the straits of florida unassisted. british australian swimmer penny palfrey stopped her trek overnight because of strong ocean currents. she was about 25 miles from her destination. the team says palfrey is fine but did suffer a few jellyfish stings along the way. now to the u.s. olympic swim trials. michael phelps celebrated his 27th birthday by continuing his march to london. locked in a tight battle with ryan lochte in 200 meter individual medley and phelps beat lochte by less than 0.1 second. natalie coughlin punched her ticket to london with a sixth place finish in 100 meter qualify. she barely squized in with a time of 54:44. she's headed to her third olympic games.

the san francisco giants are looking to get back in the win column. they handed the ball to their most experienced pitcher yesterday but would it be enough? top of the fourth inning, giants' barry zito has bases loaded but he could not get out of the jam. cincinnati reds take a 1-0 lead. fast forward to the bottom of the ninth inning. giants trail by two runs. brandon be brandon belt hits a triple and scores but reds hold on to win 2-1. both teams play again this afternoon at 1 p.m. a final in texas. the oakland a's lost to the texas rangers 7-2. oakland has now lost 4 of their last 5 games. at one point baseball wasn't about big dollars and steroid rumors, it was just a group of local guys in small towns meeting after work to play the game. jaw son hawkins from our nbc station in connecticut found one group of guys who are still playing baseball like they did in the old days.

>> we have sunshine which will take a little while. a low deck of stratus clouds hanging out over the bay, which means insulation at the surface so we're waking up mild. san francisco typically starts out at 50. already at 60 degrees. same for oakland and san mateo. that fog has lifted in sanyo say so we're starting to warm at 62 already. you can see from our satellite vantage point, those clouds, it's a low, thin deck, but once the sun warms up, that deck will start to fade away. plenty of sunshine once we head to the afternoon hours. really we're looking at a similar day to what we saw yesterday. 78 in san jose. today, 77 in santa cruz. 67 in alameda. not bad. fairfield topping out at 80. concorde at 68. again, all around the board we're looking at comfortable conditions. if you can hear my voice, you're looking at beautiful conditions. i mean, considering that the rest of the country is sweltering.

trinity place. three people and a dog managed to get out safely. the fire was so bad, the roof of the home collapsed. >> surprising to have that much fire when we first arrived. we had fire from the back corner of the building, flames about 10 to 15 feet in the air. >> firefighters say they will remain at the scene this morning to check for any hot spots. a cause to what started the fire is still being investigated. a san francisco 49ers recovering from an off the field injury he suffered while hosting a house party. the sheriff's department responded to gunshots heard at sanyo say home of 49ers player aldon smith early yesterday morning. they found two people with gunshot wounds. smith was also injured after being stabbed. comcast sports net is reporting smith was trying to break up a fight when things turned ugly. >> didn't know what was happening until there was deputy knocking on our door, interviewing neighbors after that. >> police are saying all three victims are hospitalized and suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries.

no suspects have been arrested. family and friend of a man who vanished after a giants game are asking for the public's help to try and find him. they posted flyers ayesterday before heading out for another search on the bay. 27-year-old vk tore murillo was last seen near pier 32 after a giant game. the friend said he looked up from sending a text and he was gone. they think he may have fallen into the bay. extensive searches from the water and air have so far revealed nothing. there was a scary moment in the east bay when an elderly driver crashed into an ice cream shop. police say the 73-year-old woman accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brakes sending her car crashing through the front of this baskins-robins. the dreiiver was not hurt but a employee inside suffered minor injuries when she was trapped behind the counter. sfo is using the help of four-legged creatures to help

combat fires. the airport is bringing in a heard of goats to clear dry brush. officials hope to create a fire break around the property. it should take several weeks to complete. sfo is not legally able to use lawn mowers because the area is in a protected area. ventia state rec area are slighted to close today. funding to keep them operating was slashed from next year's budget and both parks could find private donors to keep them open. nearly 70 parks were originally slated to shut down to help balance the state budget but outside groups helped them them from the chopping block. here's another look at some new laws that will take effect today, the start of the new fiscal year for state of california. south bay expect to pay a higher sales tax. a bar tax passed in 2008 means santa clara sales tax goes up from 8.25% to 8.37%. a series of new laws will take

cnbc's tyler mathisen has a look at what you can expect in the world of business. a short but busy week ahead on wall street as traders kick off a new month and new quarter and the second half of the year. all the markets will be closed on wednesday to celebrate independence day. tuesday the markets close early so investors can get a jump on the holiday. a couple of big reports for traders to look forward to. friday the biggest of them all, the june employment report. last month's data showed an increase of 16,000 jobs and unemployment holding steady at 8.2%. automakers will roll out june sales numbers which have been consistently strong all year. some estimates have the u.s. on pace to buy 14 million new cars this year, but those expenditures may be slowing just a bit. we'll see whether all that demand for new cars and trucks have helped the country's manufacturing sector when data for new factory orders are released. laws go into effect july 1st which may cause restaurants and grocers more money. california is banning the sale of foie gras.

san jose has been all over tv. nice to see it getting some love. now that the u.s. supreme court has upheld affordable health care, how will the law impact california? let's get answers from larry gersten. what can we expect? >> oh, boy. maybe changes -- >> go away for 20 minutes and come back and get you after that. it's mind-bobbling. one article after another, many misinterpretations. let's see if we can break it down. major changes. california has 7 million uninsured people. far more than any other state, by far. now, with this new law, just this law alone, about 5 million californians will be covered by health insurance within a couple years. that's massive in itself. we already have about 400,000 who have been covered through temporary programs, affordable care act, but this is going to be expanded. expanded greatly here and everywhere else by fall 2013. yeah, we're just at the beginning stages of some significant changes in domestic

policy. >> now, for a person who has insurance through their employer, not a big change or a big change? >> no change. no xhang. >> let's talk about where the changes are because people say, okay, it doesn't change me. how does it change for those who are going to get it, those 7 million? >> okay. we've got something going here. california was the first state to set up this uninsured exchange program, this health benefits exchange program. first state of all of them. because of that, it's sort of a mechanism for ensuring the uninsured down the road. we're going to be -- the exchange will be a virtual marketplace for all ininsured folks looking to choose the right program from a whole bunch of them. do i want that? do i want that one? that's the idea to keep the prices low. as for funding the exchanges, where is this money coming from? the federal government is going to provide subsidy for families earning up to 400% below poverty line.

a graduated scale. up to about $92,000, per family of four beyond the poverty line, 400%. like we said, if you have health insurance, ho hum. it doesn't matter. that's one of the things people haven't really understood. yes, 30 million people are involved but we have 310 million, 315 million people in this country. it's going to be a big change but not as massive as some people think. >> now, obviously, when the supreme court ruled, they upheld the constitutionality of the affordable care act and one part they interpreted narrowly as medicaid where government says, if you don't expand medicaid, we'll take all medicaid funding. the supreme court says you can't do that. you can promise more if you expand medicaid. california was already on board saying, we're going to do this. >> first state. >> some states, what are you -- and i'm going to look in the crystal ball. do you think some states will actually not expand their medicaid and leave that money on the table?

>> it's fascinating. 26 states sued originally with that very idea in mind. since the decision came down, about eight or ten have already said, okay, we get it, we're going to be on board. it turns out that of the states who say right now we're not going to do it, some of them need it the most. florida for one. governor scott says, we're not going to do it. they've got 19% of their public uninsured. the fact of the matter is it doesn't cost any state any dollar. the first four years, nothing. the poorest states are among those that are saying right now, we're not going in. we'll see what happens over time. for the time being it's fascinating to watch. >> let's get back to california and talk about this transition and how this is going to work. a smooth one? what do you think? >> oh, gosh. no, no, no, no. we're looking -- it's going to be -- let's use the words controlled chaos. i mean, we're looking at the

very biggest debt in social policy, the hugest change since medicaid was passed in 1965. over the next decade, at least the next decade, 20 to 30 years, we can expect congress to make all kinds of changes regarding coverage, subsidies, taxes, what areas will be or won't be covered, but absent a huge republican win, not just of the presidency, but of congress, absent that kind of monumental change in november, this is the law. and this is the law that we will work from from now on. so, for that reason alone, what we saw this last week, pretty heavy stuff. >> i ask you to look in the crystal ball one more time. it's the law and a big part of the upcoming presidential election. a lot of people interpreted this as a victory for president obama, that his law stood. some people said, this could be very galvanizing for the opposition. we've often talked about how the republican base has had trouble

getting behind mitt romney. >> right, right. >> could this be the thing, then, that gets people behind mitt romney? >> yeah. you know what, both sides win if you can believe that. both sides win on this yib. the romney folks win because the tea party folks who have been suspicious of romney all along, say, wow, he means it, when romney says we're going to replace, replace, period. elect me to get this done. they will be galvanized. they'll be mobilized. the obama folks win, too, because liberals have been saying, how serious is this guy? you know, he promised us this and that. now they can say, by golly, he delivered on something and the court approved it. we like this. both sides. the question always remains, what about those guys in the middle? what about the independents? >> they're the ones who decide the election. >> and independents only in seven or eight states. it comes down to that. sit back, enjoy, and know almost everyone's made up their minds already. >> dr. larry gersten, thanks.

that's just a glimpse into his brilliance. you can get larry's political insight any time on nbcbayarea.com. now, mexicans are voting for a new president today, speaking of elections, a lot on the line for mexican's war on drugs and the impact it has along our southern border. we get a report from nbc's mark potter. >> reporter: the murders this week of three federal police officers allegedly shot by two fellow officers smuggling cocaine at mexico city airport have brought the drug war to the forefront. days before the mexican presidential election. president calderon's six-year war against traffickers has cost an estimated 55,000 lives. >> people here are so upset with all the violence. they're sick and tired of being afraid in their own homes. >> reporter: all the presidential candidates, including the clear front-runner, vowed to reduce the violence. but that could mean easing up to drug cartels to focus more on

street crime. >> people are fed up with the war. and he's a politician and he will feel it's time to move on and, perhaps, look at this whole issue in a different way. >> reporter: he's from the party known as the pre, pre-rule mexico for seven decades until it was voted out seven years ago amid widespread corruption and cronyism. >> there's some uneasiness this may be the same party that deals with drug traffickers in the past and they want to see evidence in the u.s. government as many mexicans do, that this is really a new and reformed party. >> reporter: u.s. officials worry a less aggressive mexican drug fight could lead to more narcotics entering the u.s. here in mexico the retort is the u.s. still needs to do a lot more to reduce consumption of drugs, along with the flow of drugs and money to the cartel. outgoing president calderon's war on drugs has been a costly, uphill battle. the question now on both sides

temperatures have warmed a couple of degrees. san jose, 63 now. gilroy, 63. santa cruz on the way to a beautiful beach day, 63 as well. san francisco up 1 degree. in fact, san francisco at 61. a mild start considering we're usually in the 50s at this time. those clouds have rolled overhead. those clouds still in place as you saw. they made their way over towards dublin, fremont. but even in san jose, skies are starting to clear a little bit. we had a cold front move through yesterday. it was a weak one and already starting to dissipate. those showers up toward pacific northwest up to the upper rockies, that's our cold front. it's falling apart. we have that reinforcing cooling wind today. that's why our temperatures are just going to be a tad degree cooler than what we saw yesterday. but we're not talking about major cooling in any means. in fact, our winds will start to shift around this dissipating cold front so that means tomorrow we'll see major warming. mid to upper 80s return. today i think some of us will get into the 80s especially places like fairfield, down towards gilroy.

those will be it. in fact, it doesn't look like we'll see many 80s today. 70s will be the main story for this forecast today. now, that warm air is sitting off into the pacific. we're waiting on it. this will start to understand in the cold front from yesterday, still has cool air in place and trough hanging out across central california. once the afternoon hours come, the ridge will swing north and we're talking about comfortable conditions. 50s and 60s from half moon bay but the farther you head inland, that's where skies will be mostly sunny. 80s expected for places like fairfield, gilroy, even alman valley. san francisco, 68. redwood city, 75. not aa bad day across the bay area by any means. tomorrow we get a little warmer. we're back to 85 tomorrow afternoon. as we head towards tuesday, that's when we'll see the peak heat day. i wouldn't be surprised if some of us top out near 90, especially places like

through july 4th. now, if this weekend felt a little longer than normal, it was. but just barely. time stood still for a second to keep the world's atomic clocks in sync with the earth. it closes a gap caused by the-e's slowing rotation and incredibly precise atomic clocks. the second was added to the last minute of june 30th. people in japan gathered to see the extra second on a digital clock. alec baldwin is celebrating this weekend, the 54-year-old actor and 28-year-old yoga instructor tied the knot. the ceremony took place in a new york city church yesterday. some notable guests include baldwin "30 rock co-star tina that faye and daughter ireland. thank you for making us part of your morning. we'll have local news for you tonight at 5:00, 6:00, 11:00. all day at nbcbayarea.com. of course, the olympic trials continue in san jose.
