not just because the nation's birthday is wednesday but we're going to get a taste of summer that lasts for longer than two days. it's going to last all week long, temperatures in the 80s, even the 90s as we head through the middle of the week. we'll talk about that. this morning no need for the jacket in san jose. 62 on the way to low 80s. your full forecast is moments away. first, mike has a serious crash. >> it happened about midnight. we'll take to you the north bay, in petaluma, old lakeville road at lakeville highway, 116 in the area. traffic is able to get through. there is traffic control. this is a serious accident but not having a serious impact on the traffic flow. but we'll be monitoring that. this is a situation for about four hours now, and we'll continue to follow this. 101 through the area moving fine except for southbound right as you approach san marin drive. there is construction which will be a distraction. off 37 north you might have

construction at the transition as well. the green means they are moving. >> thank you very much, mike. the u.s. gymnastic team for the summer olympics is official this morning. >> five women and five men representing the united states in the london olympics at the end of this month, the crowd, they jam-packed san jose's hp pavilion for the final night of the women's trials after more than a decade of training it all came down to 15 women. five of them able to rise above the rest to become team u.s.a. >> this is just the best feeling. you look back and how far you worked so hard for something. all of these girls we're best friends. i'm so happy they are on the team with me. >> it's awesome. the women's olympic team considered the strongest the americans have had since back in 1996. they won the gold and this year they are favored to win the gold medal again. the five women representing the u.s.a.

>> one familiar gymnast will not be competing. defending champion natia luken lost her bid to return. she took a hard fall on the uneven bars on sunday. it was tough. she stood up, though, and finished the routine. after learning she wouldn't make the team she says she's ready to move on. >> for me this is a stepping stone for the rest of my life, and it really made me believe that by competing here and by finishing this competition anything is possible. >> she won the gold medal in the individual all around competition at the 2008 summer olympics in beijing. >> the men's team was also announced. danell leyva and john orozco scored the highest.

trial. >> william lynch is charged with beating a retired priest who he says abused him as a child. bob joins us with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and jon. there could be closing arguments today in downtown san jose, depending where the defense will rest their case. it's possible they might call one more witness. on friday the defendant himself took the stand in his trial, right off the bat will lynch admitted he had attacked father lindner over two years ago. then whan was a at times emotional testimony lynch described in graphic detail how father jerry lindner sexually abused he and his brother on a camping trip when they were young boys. at times lynch broke down having to pause to recompose. lynch says it was not his intent to beat up lindner when he went to the center.

he wanted the father to sign papers admitting to his alleged crime. when the father hered at him the same lay he says when he molested him he hit him more than once, asking the priest to take off his glasses before doing so. at one point lynch says both had each other by the neck. someone walked in and lynch left. lynch reported lindner's crimes but there were never charges because the statute of limitations had run out. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we can tell you the court battle for the assets of thomas kinkade continues. his girlfriend hoping to explain in court why she deserves the estate money in the bank and control over $66 million of artwork. she claims kincade willed her the assets before he died. lawyers for kinkade's estranged

wife says the validity of the wills should be decided by a panel, not in open court. kinkade died at his home. >> pregnant women in california will now have easier access to health care. the maternity coverage availability sacramento one of several new laws that went into effect on sunday. senator evans of santa rosa authored the legislation. it requires health insurance plans to provide maternity coverage to individual policyholders. until now only group plans were required to offer it. doctors say the new law will help but there will be a gap in coverage. >> maternity services are provided for under all individual health care plans but there is nothing that states that pregnancy would not be considered a pre-existing condition and therefore would be covered regardless. >> the pre-existing clause will no longer be an issue in 2014 when the remainder of the president's affordable health

care act takes effect. for now doctors recommend women trying to get pregnant should get insurance ahead of time. >> a homeless camp may be to blame for a grass fire that burned close to homes in south san jose. it started off highway 87 near curtner avenue. dozens of firefighters fighting from the ground while a helicopter helped from above. officials say the gusts up to 25 miles an hour fuelled the fire and several homes were threatened. >> good thing here with the fire was it started at the top of the hill which was driving it down the hill which made it less speedy for us. if it was moving down to up. so that did help us out with containing it. >> no homes were damaged, nobody was hurt. officials still trying to investigate the cause but say a fire at a homeless camp may have started it all. >> firefighters in colorado were finally gaining ground on the

large wild fire near colorado springs. it's 55% contained. this weekend some families who had to evacuate were allowed back home for the first look at what was even left. the fire has destroyed nearly 350 homes, killed two people, and burned 26 square miles since it started eight days ago. it is very different scene in the maine look at this video from chicago. severe storms pounded cities in the midwest to the atlantic coast tilling nearly two dozen people and leaving millions without power. west virginia and ohio have been declared disaster zones. utility operators say it could take a week to get electricity flowing again. that is a tough run for those folks. >> it has been rough. >> really. >> keep our eye on that. mother nature has been more kind here in the west. a good looking week. >> she has been ridiculously generous, so good to us. when you were looking at the

work your full forecast is coming up. we're going to talk about fire danger, as you know you have the sparklers, the fireworks and dry conditions. they don't complement each other. 4:41. make sure you're on your best behavior. mike has a problem out there. >> we're following that sigalert or the deadly accident in petaluma. 101 on the peninsula we have an issue off there at san antonio avenue. there is an accident here as well. no major injuries reported but it is an issue, the flashing lights a distraction at the off ramp. the speeds on 101 as well as 280 moving smoothly, though, into and out of the south bay. and no construction on the sensors so that smooth flow of traffic through the northbound commute. looking at 880 through oakland, smooth drive, fremont up flew hayward, to this scene past the coliseum, easy drive. and north to the bay bridge toll plaza with a light volume of traffic. you see low clouds but you can see the lights along the east

shore freeway, that's 18 minutes from carquinez bridge. >> your ticket to ride got more expensive. the price for a monthly muni pass going up now at $64. according to the examiner, it's still cheaper than most of the top 10 cities with similar systems. muni leaders say the increase is all part of a plan to try to keep fare and fee hikes small and predictable. the price for regular one-time tickets are still $2. >> muni not the only agency raising fares. caltrain increasing fares for paper tickets 25 cents. to encourage riders to use electronic clipper passes which are the same price. b.a.r.t. putting the last of its inflation-based increases in effect. riders can expect to pay about 5 cents more a ticket. >> 4:42. still ahead on "today in the

quarter or the second half of the year, investors will sift through a number of manufacturing reports including weak ones from china and the eurozone and one from the u.s. in corporate news, airbus is expected to make a formal announcement it will open in mobile, alabama, expected to be a boom for that area because the $600 million plant which will make commercial jets will employ 4,000 to 5,000 people and 5,000 to 10,000 jobs expected to be added indirectly because of the opening. for airbus there is another reason it's opening in mobile, it's a strike at its rival boeing based in the u.s. because it could put it in a better position to win orders both on the commercial and defense side here in the u.s. and if you think that all stuffed animals are sweet and cuddly, think again, ted took the top spot at the box office over the weekend. i want to read this. the comedy which stars mark

get caught up in the morning commute. it's early but already activity out there, mike. >> just after midnight, up in petaluma there was a deadly accident. word is that it may be a hit and run because they are looking for someone involved. but this is the impact on traffic. lakeville highway at old lakeville road, it's one-way traffic control. chp on the scene. that will be an issue there but not on or off 101. it's a distance away from there. and traffic, to the west of 101, north we have millbrae avenue at labath avenue, some wires are down and we're looking at possible traffic control. pg&e is heading out there as well. there may be power affected. we'll follow this but some might have heard about millbrae avenue at petaluma. looking here, connecting the north bay with the city, a smooth drive. not a big concern. visibility fine for the golden gate bridge.

>> thank you for the update. you don't see this every day. san francisco hiring new workers doing yard work at the airport. these workers don't punch a time card or take a paycheck. they are happy to eat weeds. airport officials using goats to create a fire break on the west side of the airport near 101. i wonder if they can get fired. it's a sensitive area that contains two endangered species, the gardner snake and the red-legged frog. the goats will clear where the airport is not legally able to use heavy machinery. they will be there eating things up for about two weeks. >> it's 4:57. traveling around the bay area gets more expensive today in more ways than one. bridge tolls and bus fares among the increases.
