during an emotional trial. william lynch charged with beating a priest who he says abused him as a child. bob redell is live in san jose with more on what we can expect throughout the day. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. it was our understanding the defense does have one more witness to call, so depending how long that cross-examination and direct and recross were to take it's possible that closing arguments could take place today. the defense has only called one witness so far. they called their client, the defendant. that was will lynch. right off the bat admitted that he, yes, attacked father jerry lindner at his home in los gatos over two years ago, then in what was at times emotional testimony lynch described in graphic detail how father lindner sexually abused him and his brother on a camping trip when they were young boys. at times lynch broke down, having to recompose himself.

lynch said it was not his intention to beat up lindner when he went to the center in may of 2010, instead he wanted the the father to sign papers admitting to his alleged crime. when according to lynch the father leered at him the same way when he molested him he hit him more than once, asking the priest to take off his glasses before doing so. at one point lynch says both had each other by the neck. the confrontation didn't last long and ended when someone walked in and lynch left. here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 5:02. an investigation is under way into the death of a young man shot and killed at the foot of the oakland hills. police say the man was shot near the intersection of mountain boulevard and kuhnle avenue sunday night. he apparently drove a short distance and died. the man was in his 20s. his name has not been released. >> some east bay hotel guests

back in their rooms after a chemical scare. several floors were evacuated. a guest used some unidentified chemicals to commit suicide. investigators say there were several notes found warning to stay out of the room. no other guests were injured. >> this morning be prepared to pay more if you take public transit. b.a.r.t., caltrain and several agencies raising fares. christie smith joins us live in oakland with how much a ride will cost now. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. no matter how you get around on public transportation in the bay area, there is a good chance you're going to be paying a little bit more. we're at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. i took a look inside. i don't see specific signs but we'll start with b.a.r.t. the fares are going up about 1.4% which is about 5 cents for the average ticket. this is based on the last of a series of inflation-based fare

increases. you'll want to pay attention to the machine if you pay cash because not all of the fares are going up. the last time b.a.r.t. increased their fares they tell us is in 2009. in san francisco, muni riders need to know fares increased $1 to $2, that will go in effect for monthly passes. senior, disabled and youth fares go up about $1. also you need to know that parking fines are going up by $7 or $8 which means an expired downtown meter will now run you about $72. might be best to hop on a train or bus. on caltrain prices increase for those buying paper tickets, 25 cents one way, 50 cents for a day pass. the discount for eight-ride tickets goes down from 15% to 7.5%. for clipper card users, the amount is deducted from your pass, also golden gate transit bus and ferry, you need to know that is going up about 5% as

well. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> this morning firefighters telling us a small fire at a south bay high school may have been intentionally set. investigators say an exterior door on a building at independence high school was set on fire sunday night. fortunately, there was only minor damage and nobody was injured. >> the cause after small grass fire is under investigation. the flames came close to several homes on communication hill sunday afternoon. that's off of highway 87. gusty winds up to 25 miles an hour spread the flames but dozens of firefighters and a water-dropping helicopter contained it to about two acres. the firefighters tell us the damage could have been worse. >> with the fire, it started at the top of the hill which made it less speedy for us, it wasn't moving as fast as it could have been if it was moving down to up so. that did help us with containing it. >> firefighters say a camp fire at a nearby homeless encampment

may have sparked the fire. no homes were damaged and no one was hurt. >> firefighters finally gaining ground on a massive wildfire near colorado springs. this one has been going on for a while. this morning the waldo canyon fire is about 55% contained. that fire destroyed nearly 350 homes, killed two people and burned 26 square miles. it started eight days ago. this fire is one of several still burning across utah, montana, wyoming and across idaho. >> sadly, millions of people on the east coast are without power with temperatures expected past the 100-degree mark today. it's because after storm that hit on friday. killing at least 14 people across several states. crews are working around the clock to repair downed power lines but the utilities say it could take a full week before power is restored to the more than 2 million people left in the dark. >> this storm had all of the

impact of a hurricane without the warning. >> the storm damage is extensive from indiana to new jersey. the hardest hit was west virginia, washington and maryland. >> wow. >> tough go. >> storms, record temperatures, fires a rough start. we've had it very easy out here. meteorologist christina loren joins us to talk about monday and beyond. >> good morning. yeah, that ridge of high pressure that normally keeps us in record territory this time of year, it's not that far out of the realm of possibility. it's keeping them warm, it's moving back throughout this week and so much warmer on average than every day last week, we had a beautiful, beautiful first full week of summer. temperatures are going to be warming up for the ac to return to your home. i think you'll need it inland by wednesday. but this morning we're getting some of the natural cooling off the pacific. mother nature providing a pretty fair marine layer about 1200 feet. it's going to push inland to

drive, novato, you have construction and crews clearing as well as expect slowing and distraction. the peninsula we had the san antonio avenue off ramp an accident cleared. a smooth flow there. and the san mateo bridge, clear flow from the toll plaza. a fwhot fare increases, we're talking about multi-axle trucks, a price increase per axle. won't affect most of our commuters. >> that court battle over the estate of painter thomas kinkade continuing. his girlfriend will appear in court to explain why she deserves control over the artist's assets. she claimed that kinkade signed two wills handing over his estate to her. kinkade's wife says the matter should be handled privately, not in open court. kinkade, if the you recall, died in april at his home after

you. stick the landing, go usa. enjoy every minute from a fan in arizona. so, pretty telling notes left behind. the girls, they did have fun last night. they sold out hp, an estimated crowd of about 17,500 packed the house. the 14 competitors wowed and amazed the crowd throughout the 2 1/2 hours of competition. in the end, five made the cut including gabby douglas, alexandra riseman. gabby douglas scored the highest. she told us the audience was a force to be reckoned with. >> i think that was the loudest crowd. everyone was clapping and cheering and i could barely hear. like okay. >> reporter: the moment that was

hardest to watch came when nadia liukin was on the uneven bars. seconds into her routine she missed the bar and face planted. at that moment she knew her shot at london was over. >> i'm ready to move on with my life and -- it's emotional to think back because i spent so many years in gymnastics. i'll definitely remember this moment forever. >> reporter: what a great sport. i got to tell you for a personal point of view i was here and saw her go down, take that hard fall and the best thing was with the wind knocked out of here she put more chalk on her hands and went back at it and she nailed it. talk about perseverance and focus. team u.s.a., they are going to hold a press conference later this morning, so we're looking forward to hearing from them again at 8:00.

all clear from the traffic. 101 through the north bay also fine but i'll take you further north from petaluma and millbrae avenue at labath avenue. some wires down. pg&e has yet to arrive but the fire department is there, traffic can get through but there are wires down on the shoulder. we don't have details on power outages. i'll let you know but sounds like nothing dramatic. the metering lights are not on at the bay bridge because they haven't turned them on. there is power here and a smooth drive. the low clouds for the fog, right now it new major problem. the approach in the maze, a smooth flow. 18 minutes off of the east shore freeway from the carquinez bridge. we do have slowing kicking in out of the altamont pass, 15 minutes, slowing now, 40s and 50s into livermore out of the tracy area. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> mike inouye in the running

lynch had reported lindner's alleged sex crimes to law enforcement but there were never any charges because the statute of limitations had run out. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a san francisco linebacker this morning recovering after being stabbed at a house party that he was hosting. deputies found two pple shot and alvin smith stabbed when they responded to his home. comcast sports net reporting that smith was trying to break up a fight when things turned ugly. >> there's deputies knocking on the door, interviewing neighbors after that. >> officials confirming that smith received minor injuries. the other victims were not seriously hurt. no suspects have been arrested. >> the search continues for missing dodgers fan who was last seen near at&t park. families searched. he came to san francisco from his home in sacramento to watch

his dodgers take on the giants. a friend says he disappeared while they walked to the cars parked on pier 32. the police believe he fell in the bay and drowned. >> he didn't indicate it was a slash. >> the coast guard call off the search after finding no signs of him. >> a bay area lawmaker wants to crack down on party bus companies that allow underage drinking. assemblyman jerry hill sponsoring a bill that would fine bus companies that fail to monitor the ages of passengers and the amount of alcohol brought on board. the bill is named in memory of 19-year-old brett studebaker who died in a crash after drinking on one of the party buses. the party bus bill faces a crucial committee vote today in sacramento. >> higher fares for bay area commuters kick in this morning. b.a.r.t., caltrain and other agencies asking passengers to pay more. christie smith joins us live

with more. >> reporter: good morning. if you are one of those that uses a clipper card to get around you might not notice the difference because the amount will be deducted from your pass. but these increases are pretty much across the board for transit areas in the bay area, starting with b.a.r.t. where the increase amounts to about 1.4% or about 5 cents for the average fares. this actually started sunday but today is no the first day that commuters will see that increase. for b.a.r.t., this is the last in a series of inflation-based fare increases, the last increase for b.a.r.t. we're told was in 2009. on caltrain, prices will increase for people buying paper tickets, 25 cents one way and 50 cents for a day pass. the discount for the eight-ride tickets will go from 15% off down to 7.5% off. and in san francisco, muni riders, adult passes will increase about with $2 to $74.

muni only passes now $64, passes for youth, seniors and disabled going up $1 to $22. even your parking tickets go up in the city by about $7 to $8. now $72 for an expired downtown san francisco meter. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> keeping on the subject of transportation t dumbarton express bus between the east bay and the peninsula expanding this morning. starting today you can expect more daily trips across the bridge. the line between the union city b.a.r.t. station and deer creek road in palo alto will make 22 round trips every day. the line between union city b.a.r.t. and stanford university adding additional morning and evening trips. >> time to check that forecast with meteorologist christina loren. see what we're in store for today. >> we've got a glorious week ahead. it's going to feel like summer but not the extreme side that most of the nation has been dealing with. we'll get temperatures on track

basically the altamont pass. we have another minute added on but it's showing the trend. also slowing coming at the interchange for westbound 580 and northbound 680 though it doesn't look like much now, over the last five minutes i saw a good deal of slowing through dublin into san ramon. so i'll continue to track that, may abblip for the morning. we haven't seen incidents, again tracking that as well as the castro valley y, at the limit, up to the bay bridge no problem. to the san mateo bridge a smooth drive. we head west with the taillights away from the toll plaza, you heard about all of the fare increases. the toll plaza, the san mateo bridge or the golden gate bridge we have a fee across all toll bridges increasing for multi-axle vehicles. that's three or more that they talk about. passenger vehicles likely not affected. they have a fare increase that kicks in today. commuters probably not affected.

shaping up. you want to get outdoors, come tomorrow a little too warm for your plans inland so take advantage. 63 degrees in san jose, 64 to start you out in sunnyvale, a great day, high pressure really moves in as we head through the next couple of days. what's going to happen is the jet stream is sitting just to our north in the pacific northwest. so, area of low pressure is keeping that onshore flow in place, keeping our skies full of clouds. that's going to keep your temperatures from soaring. as we head throughout this afternoon, by 2:00 p.m., completely clear conditions in santa cruz. it's going to be a great beach day. if you have the kids home with you for the summertime, a great day to take them to season to cruz. 75 degrees, you can't beat that with a gentle breeze out of the west. 79 in san jose, 80 in livermore and 83 degrees in gilroy. throughout the next couple of days temperatures climb. we'll peak on wednesday, fourth of july, 89. then level off thursday, friday into the weekend. so, much warmer overall than last week.
