of a 3-year-old was found in the home critically injured suffering from signs of abuse. christie smith is live at oakland's children's hospital with more. good morning, christie. >> reporter: on monday they had a report of an unresponsive little boy. paramedics were sent to a home in north oakland. that little boy was taken to a hospital here in oakland. police later determined at that his injuries were consistent with child abuse, present bus and past injuries. a sitter told police that the 3-year-old had been left alone and was found facedown in the bathtub. when first responders arrived, they found the little boy was dry with clothes on. the sitter, the stepfather and mom were arrested. now police are looking for four other children with ties to that little boy. >> we want to make sure that we can verify that they are not harmed and have not suffered any

type of physical abuse such as the 3-year-old. >> reporter: the missing kids are 4-year-old paradise mahasin, 9-year-old antwan johnson, 7-year-old zaniyyah johnson and 16-year-old alyajah marie johnson. all kids are african-american, but so far oakland police vant released any photos. reporting live in oakland, christie submit today in the bay. an east bay mother at this hour fighting for her life after a violent home invasion robbery. inial follow-up they search for flee men that force their way on a home in hanford court. one of the three shot the 62-year-old mother right in the chest and pistol-whipped her son when they couldn't open a safe in the ohouse. the victim's husband feels for empathy than anger. >> they were hungry, and they

want to feed their family. this is probably the only means they know how. >> we can tell you the suspects may have left behind some dna evidence after drinking one of the family's sodas. this marks the second time a home invasion robbery within 48 hours in union city, but police say they do not think the two crimes are related. 6:03. two people face charges this morning for starting a fire that damaged or destroyed several san francisco homes. more than 100 firefighters worked to put out the four-alarm blaze early tuesday morning. firefighters smelled gasoline had they arrived. neighbors blame squatters that plague the believe for years. no one was injured but ten are left homeless. a conflicted felon this morning behind bars after san francisco police found dozens of military grade explosives in his house.

44-year-old jerry lopez facing a long list of felony including possession of destructive devices. police acting on a toip to raid lopez's home yesterday, and when they got inside they found more than 60 explosives including the ones on the screen. neighbors were ordered to stay inside their homes while officers investigated. we're happy to report nobody was hurt. this fourth of july some bay area police departments will use a high-tech crime fighting tool to stop illegal gunfire and use. "today in the bay" joins us live at oakland police department with more on the crackdown. good morning. >> reporter: people might want to reconsider shooting off fireworks in oakland or east palo alto because both cities' police departments will be listening with their shot spotter technology. that's the series of microphones set up in different parts of city that triangulate the sound of gunfire notifying officers of the location. shot spotter as it turns out

works for fireworks and it distinguish between the two. fireworks are illegal in epa and oakland, even the safe and sans. police know people want to celebrate, but they encourage it be done without breaking the law. >> the largest concern is the fire danger, and that's what we're looking at. we remember the firestorm years ago with a significant nir in oakland, and that's something that the fire department and city works very hard every year trying to reduce the amount of fires and the damage that it can cause. >> reporter: police are conducting specialized patrols in east and west oakland. those are areas where they've had problems in the past not only with fireworks but celebratory gunfire. the bullets go up and come down. unfortunately stiz they hit people in the head. it if you have illegal fireworks in oakland and have second thoughts, you can drop them off. there are several fire stations

here in the city that accept them with no questions asked. reporting live here, bob ravel, "today in the bay." if you look to light up the night with your pony fireworks, there are only a few places you can do it without actually breaking the law. the so-called safe and sane fireworks are on sale in 15 cities throughout the bay area and santa cruz county. gilroy, the only city in santa clara county tole allow them. safe and sane fireworks don't fly or explode. think sparklers, fountains and smoke bombs. in gilroy they can be bought at 16 authorized booths across the city. >> this booth vendor sells the fireworks here. they pay a fee for the city to put an extra fire engine company on duty as well as 12 extra police officers. the purpose is to patrol the streets for illegal fireworks. >> for the record safe and sane fireworks can only be used in the city where they were bought

only and in designated locations. of course, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the fireworks safely all day long. >> cities throughout the bay area hosting free events today. the san jose giants put on the annual fireworks extravaganza after tonight's game. the independence day festival in redwood city kicks off at 10:00 this morning. they have a parade of marshall and winslow streets. fireworks begin there at 9:15 tonight. in san francisco you listen to music watching a fireworks display over the bay. that starts at 9:30 tonight at pier 39. it's always a concern over the city of san francisco by the way there that you see the fog, but christina, you say it's going to be pretty clear? >> we'll see partial cloud cover, but not fogged out by any means and many people are holding yo to that forecast. i firmly believe it. good morning to you. isn't that a grand old flag flying out there in san francisco this morning. grate-looking day shaping up with temperatures in the 90s.

this is the warmest day of the week. we start out nice and crisp in san jose. 56 degrees there, 55 in sunny vale and 54 degrees in san francisco. we want to talk about the fog for the morning. as you can see, banked up against the coastal mountains until about 8:00. then we see clearing, even more clearing as we head through 11:00. by the way, today for our midday broadcast, i'll be out there live. that's right. live in danville for the parade. love to meet you out there. weather should be nice. inland today 74 degrees at noon, 79 bayside and 73 degrees at the coast. just phenomenal conditions. it could be much warmer. >> thanks a locality. you may wonder where mike is this morning. >> who? >> already one day. >> of course, i'm kidding. our road warrior in the morning and this fourth of july mike making a switch from traffic reporting to grand marshalling.

local redevelopment agencies were shut down. they want to spend the money on education. the 49ers say the county does not have the right to make that decision. the raiders are donating more than a54,000 to education. the team told oakland unified it will write a check following a season ticket drive to benefit the district. the raiders hand over 10% of the money made from new season tickets bought and paid for during may and june. this just in. scientist s have announced they may have found the particle that started it all. >> they think they discovered the so-called god particle. the head of the european sfr for nuclear research making this announcement in switzerland overnight. it's the thing that gives all matter in the universe its size and shape. they aren't saying 100% the particle is the elusive god particle. they say the newly discovered particle is consistent with it.

oakland, you can make out downtown there in the distance. cloud cover is starting your day and hoping it will burn off. 6:14. an internet documentary on missing teen sierra lamar has gone viral. very emotional stuff here. today in the bay is live in morgan hill with an update on the bay area filmmaker behind the project. good morning. >> reporter: you can see behind us that sierra's picture hangs from burnett elementary school. this is a search center head kts for the volunteer searches happening every wednesday since the 15-year-old went missing close to four months ago. recently the search for sierra has gone viral in the form of a documentary thanks to an independent filmmaker from the bay area. so far brian garcia has produced two mini-docs. they really help put a fis to volunteer-based searches. >> i have an 11-year-old daughter. on saturdays she's at home

knowing that i'm out here. in her 11-year-old mind she was able to say, daddy, i'm proud of you. >> reporter: very emotional and poignant images right there. joining us this morning is brian garcia, the man behind the documentaries. thanks for being with us especially on the holiday today. >> thanks for inviting me over here. >> reporter: you have actually volunteered your time to put the documentaries together. why? >> i always made films about children and their struggles and i'm originally from morgan hill. this is something i felt passionate about and i wanted to be part of it. it's something that i love to do. just to make a difference. >> reporter: you're a grad student studying cinema getting your masters in cinema at san francisco state. just to be clear, you are not related to the lamar family. now that you've done this, do you feel a connection to them? >> yeah. it's starting to feel like they're more like family now. you come to the search center, and you feel a little connection

that everybody is so welcoming, you and feel like you belong here. just the fact that this case was -- you know, this dwirl was abducted was all random, i felt it could have happened to any one of our sisters, daughters, and any one of our friends. i want to emphasize that sierra is everybody's daughter. >> reporter: there are two documentaries you produced about five minutes apiece. more fok? >> yes, i'm working on a third one. it's another five-minute documentary, and i'm shooting as i go. i go on the searches, and i let everybody know what's going on out there and i want to keep inspiring people to keep volunteering and getting her name out there. >> to bring sierra home. brian, thanks. you have a good heart. thanks for being here. >> you can find garcia's work on youtube. just to be clear, typically volunteers search every wednesday. it's not happening today in honor of the fourth of july holiday. live in morgan hill, "today in the bay." 6:16 this morning.

still no verdict in the trial of william lynch. he's accused of beating father lindner at a loss g gatos retirement home. he said he did it because he sexually abused him as a boy. legal experts say they could be trying to decide between misdemeanor assault and felony assault. the jury resuming its work tomorrow. the countdown to the summer olympics is on, and just to back it up and prove if, you can see that countdown. no countdown today. we'll work on that for you. there it is. i couldn't stee it. why does it move on me. how come i can't find it tlchlt it is. the countdown is on. just 23 days left. i can't really see it. athlete competing in london facing another challenge. the games overlap the holy month of ramadan which requires fasting. one of the athletes said it's

been a tough decision not to fast. another muslim athlete who qualified for the games in judo says he and his teammates have been told they're on a mission and exempt from fasting. the olympic torch jetting its way to olympic stadium. that's a stuntman, nick mccomber lifter the torch over buildings. the 23-year-old stuntman from san diego says he's been flying for years, roughly 100 flights to his name. now he has a torch to go with it, today, day 47 of the torch's 70-day journey. none like that. >> it doesn't look like it lifts him. >> he's floating and levitating. >> i'm putting that on my christmas list. >> a jet pack. just 23 days away from the start of the olympic games in london. >> stay with nbc bay area for complete live coverage during the games. until then check out our website

we're going to see that thermometer head in the upward direction. temperatures climbing by about 3 to 5 degrees from yesterday's highs. getting hot by about 4:00 p.m. we want to start with this beautiful, live look. bay bridge toll plaza this morning. mike has the day off for a good reason. what few cars are here you can see moving along without delay. as we head through the day today, temperatures are nice and comfortable. look at the sunshine over san jose this morning. just a beautiful start. america the beautiful, yeah, we live here. temperatures right now in the 50s, mid-50s in many cities. through the day today we hit the 90s. we have not had that in the forecast for the past week or so. so return of the 90s for tomorrow. by tomorrow we go down by a few degrees with a stronger on-shore flow and more fog tomorrow morning. 60s and 70s at the coast at bayside. perfect conditions today. mid-80s in most bay area inland

cities. we see lightsed 90s in places like gilroy and warmer places like antioch. the warm air is across the bay today. this is what everybody is so concerned about when it comes to viewing fireworks. you've probably been hosed a couple of years by the fun. this year doesn't look the case except for one county and that's marin. if you make the plans near the coast, you are better off doing so in san francisco or south along the peninsula. stan mateo with beautiful conditions. tomorrow morning when we meet back here we have fog so thick it generates that drizzle. that will hold your temperatures down from today's high. in oakland at 9:00 p.m. 65 degrees with a light breeze. you want a sweater or jacket with you. not so much the case in danville at 9:00 p.m. 69 degrees, comfortable, almost 70 degrees at starlight tonight in danville. speaking of which, i'll be out in danville live today for the 11:00 broadcast.

2009. users have until august 20th to delete or remove the videos to youtube. the other services eliminating is google mini and google chat. google talk chat back. in the meantime general motors is in talks to resume advertising on facebook. gm pulled ads back in may just before facebook's io. the automaker said its advertising was ineffective. the "wall street journal" reports facebook is reaassuring gm it will provide more data on how to turn money ad into revenue. the time is 6:23. the glow from fireworks might be the only lights some people on the east coast actually get to do so tonight. we'll tell you what progress is being made in that massive power outage from in week's storms.

welcome back, everybody. this fourth of july is here, but the weather is having a somber effect on some celebrations. it looks like no holidays for the crews out east and the fire crews in the west. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is life right now in washington, d.c. this morning. one of the good things about having the early shift is it's not too hot yet. what's it feel like? >> reporter: actually, it's starting to get a little warm. you're right. it was great earlier this morning. nice breeze, but we're actually starting to feel a little heat. i know this afternoon it's going to be baking, and don't you feel for those utility crews out

there trying to get people's lights back on? now, let me give you a bit of an update here on what's going on capitol hill. they tried to do the rehearsal last night for the capitol 4th celebration, but they ended up having to evacuate because of impending storms. they weren't as bad as last weekend, but they got people off the mall here. the utility crews are working hard to try to correct what happened last weekend. we now have as of this morning less than a million people without power compared to the 3 million we initially had. that's a good thing. the problem is it's going to be really hot today, and not only here but around the country we're talking upper 90s, trip triple-digit temperatures and isolated thunderstorms. this isn't over. >> tracie potts stay cool out there, thank you very much.

as you take a live look outside, golden gate bridge. a foggy start and not a lot of traffic. lots of you have this fourth of july independence day, wednesday. this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you, and thanks for joining us. it's 6:31. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we're following developing news out of oakland. four children missing, three adults in custody and a little boy fighting for his life. today in the bay's christie smith is live at oakland's children's hospital where details of the child abuse investigation going on. >> reporter: it was monday morning a 3-year-old boy was brought here to the children's hospital in oakland with life-threatening injuries. they're asking for the public's

help to find four other children with ties to that little boy. they're concerned those children may be in danger as well. they ask for the public's help to try to find them. this started with a baby-sitter called paramedics to an apartment on 63rd street on north oakland. she reported the little boy was unresponsive. he was taken to the hospital where he was revived. upon further investigation police determined that there was evidence of past physical aabab. the baby-sitter, stepfather and child's mother were arrested but four other children are unaccounted for. police believe family members may have them, but investigators want it to make sure they're okay. >> to make sure that we can verify that they are not harmed and have not suffered any type of physical abuse such as the 3-year-old. >> reporter: the children are paradise mahasin age 4 who

suffers from epilepsy and 6-year-old antwan alex and johnson and 7-year-old zaniyyah johnson and 16-year-old alyaam marie johnson. police are trying to locate pictures of all the children. it's believed that the adults will make their first court aappe appearance tomorrow. the case against suspended san francisco sheriff may have hit a snag. the chronicle reports mayor ed lee is refusing to use taxpayer money to fly lopez from her native venezuela back to san francisco. she will be a critical witness before the city's ethics commission, which is considering official misconduct charges that could leave her husband without a job. he was suspended about the mayor after the sheriff pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic aabuse charge involving lopez. she may have to testify via live video. two people are facing

charges this morning for starting a fire that damaged homes. more than 100 firefighters worked to put out the blaze early tuesday morning. firefighters smelled gasoline when they arrived. neighbors blame squatters that plagued the building for years. this morning erin kennedy and ronald weeks are facing charges. no one was injured, but ten were left homeless by the fire. this fourth of july some bay area police departments using a high-tech tool to attract explosions from both illegal gunfire and illegal fireworks. today in the day bob is live in oakland police headquarters with more on the major crackdown. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you, john. we know east palo alto and city of oakland have a zero tolerance towards any type of fireworks this fourth of july. it doesn't matter what kind you have, safe or sane, it doesn't mare, they're illegal. to crack down on it and enforce the policy, they using familiar technology, the shot spotter technology. if you're not familiar with

thshgs it's the technology used to track gun gir. they have a series of microphones set up, and anytime a shot goes off, those microphones triangulate the location. it immediately lets officers go where they need to go to stop that from happening. it turns out it works for fireworks. the spot shotter technology can distinguish between gunfire and an m-80. they're relying on on the technology to send offers out in the field to stop people from lighting off fireworks and, of course, more importantly to stop nem from shooting off guns, something that times happens in celebrations. >> across our country we have individuals seriously wounded or killed every year by celebratory gunfire, and that's our primary concern from the oakland police department. then the fire department, they have a major concern as far as the fires that fireworks can cause. >> reporter: now, in the past on

past fourth of july celebrations, celebratory gunfire is a problem specifically in east and west oakland. the police department has specialized patrols in those areas later today to try to tamp that down. if you do have illegal fireworks, if you're having second thoughts, drop it off at some of oakland fire departments. there are several fire departments listed online that accept these fireworks and won't ask questions. reporting live here, today in the bay. >> very much. we'll focus on the legal fireworks. >> there are going to be a lot of shows to enjoy across the bay area, but what we need hand in hand is clear skies. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> have my work cut out for me. i've monitored the situation every day this week, and tonight at about 9:00, it will look somewhat like this. you will see the fireworks up in the sky in san francisco as of 9 p.m., but things change quickly between about 10:00 and 11:00

that weather out there on the east coast putting a damper on fourth of july celebrations across the country today. >> more than a million people on the east coast still without power from last weekend's storms. rehearsal for the joe johnson celebration in d.c. was cut sthort due to approaching storms. forecasters predict triple-digit heat across the plains today with thunderstorms and hail possible in the midwest and northeast. utility companies say it could be friday or later before

everyone's power is back on out east and residents are not happy. >> every time i call them over the last four days, they act as if it's the first time they've heard this information. >> and it is hot out west. in colorado and other states where firefighters battle raging wildfires, dry weather has forced dozens of cities in colorado to actually cancel today's fireworks. a brush fire ripping through the hillside near palmdale is out this morning. that three-alarm fire flaring up just before 9:00 last night. l.a. achla. county firefighters buildings were in danger and no evacuations were orders. more than 200 acres did burn and more than 200 firefighters were called in to help put this one out. in syria a city at the center of the country's uprising is still under siege. government forces have rained she wills on homs. large explosions ripped through the downtown area yesterday.

at least 48 people have died in one day of fighting. in the meantime secretary of state hillary clinton is in france for more talks on these syrian conflicts. in france the government continues its investigation of former president nicolas sarkozy. police raided his home as part of a probe on suspected illegal campaign contributions. investigators say donors gave him more money than is legally allowed. sarkozy denies any wrongdoing. in spain hot winds and hot temperatures fuel a raging wildfires. tens of thousands of acres have been scorched and thousands of people have been evacuated. the fire claimed the life of a pilot when his helicopter went down. it's 6:46 right now. t "today" is next. coming up on wednesday morning on "today," a strong storm forces the evacuation of a

this tran logic story. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this started with a report of an unresponsive little boy at an apartment in north oakland. he was brought here just 3 years old to oakland's children's hospital. police are now saying that they looked further into it, and authorities determined that there was evidence of past abuse. well, now they're trying to find four other children with tieing to that child. they arrested the boy's baby-sitter, stepfather and mother. that the little boy has life-threatening injuries, and police believe that family members may have the other children. they just want to make sure that they're all right. they are 4-year-old paradise mahasin, 6-year-old antwan alex aender johnson and 7-year-old zaniyyah johnson and 16-year-old alyajah marie johnson. they're working on getting pictures of the children.
