employers added 80,000 jobs in june. analysts predicted at least 90,000 jobs would be added. the unemployment rate holding steady. analysts say the waivering confidence could take a dive. now a big time impact on the presidential campaign. over to brian mooar bringing us that part of the story. we'll have that coming up later on. and police in gilroy this morning trying to piece together the events leading up to the accidental death of a 3-year-old boy. this child was shot at his home last night. just a heart breaking incident. bob redell is live with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. gilroy police say this was an awful accident. 3-year-old son of a san jose police officer, he was accidentally shot and killed at his home just before 5:00 last night on kentwood court in gilroy.

apparently with handgun. his family was there at the time. sorp three other children according the to dispatch indicating that this might have taken place during a play date. the boy was shot at least once, died on his way to the hospital. gilroy police won't say if the boy shot himself or if it was a playmate. police say that is part of their investigation. it will focus on how the gun was stored and why a child was able to get their hands on it. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:02. new this morning convicted killer scott peterson is appealing his death sentence. his lawyer filed briefs before the state supreme court arguing publicity denied peterson a fair trial and challenging several other rulings of evidence. peterson was convicted in 2004 of murdering his wife laci and their unborn son, dumping her body in the san francisco bay. the appeal is expected to take

months or even years to resolve. >> also new this morning a 1200-acre wild fire near redding is threatening dozens of homes. we're told it's about 30% contained. evacuations in the happy valley area are still in effect. five homes have been damaged so far but luckily no one has been hurt. >> it was a sad day at the track. we can tell you racing is expected to go on at the alameda county fair a day after a jockey dies. christie smith live at pleasant pleasanton. >> reporter: good morning. the entire horse racing community is in shock over this and a tribute is being planned for jorge herrera, there are condolences coming in to the facebook page of the fair. we have video for you this morning. the final seconds just before the fall where you see the 33-year-old jockey on a white

horse. it appears the horse is clipped by another horse and herrera goes off the mount onto the track. it appears that his horse or another horse stomped on him and he may have suffered head trauma. >> jorge herrera is a firly new jockey to the racing scene and he is from mexico. we're definitely saddened by this and the entire horse racing industry is. just doing everything that we can to make sure our jockeys and horses are safe as we normally do. >> reporter: he was taken to eden trauma center in castro valley where he died about two hours after the horrible accident. herrera is from mexico, new but apparently a fan favorite. the incident is under review by the california horse racing board. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> officers say a man who

crashed his car after a chase on the bay bridge was drunk. officers say antonio robertson was speeding when he lost control on the "s" curve yesterday. shots were exchanged as deputies moved in. no one was hit. both robertson and a passenger were injured. officers had to close down the eastbound lanes for eight hours yesterday to investigate that cash. really created that backup you see. robertson is a parolee and now faces drunk driving and weapons charges. >> this has been a high profile case and the bay area man who admitted to beating the catholic priest he says raped him decades ago is not where he expected to be. a san jose jury returning a not guilty verdict yesterday. prosecutors charging william lynch with felony assault and elder abuse in the 2010 attack on father jerold lindner.

from oakland to san francisco, even the santa cruz mountains socked in. look at what happens, continuing to noon and the greater bay area is sunny. and temperatures will be comfortable for outdoor plans. you want to seize this while it lasts. things are going to change. this is the coolest day of the next 8 to 10 days. 74 degrees at noon inland, 82 at 4:00 p.m. so that means we're going to see the low 80s. the 70s at the bay and at the coast today upper 60s. you'll get some great beach days, i'll reveal when on my seven-day forecast. first, here's mike. >> very busy especially for a friday. the volume of traffic relatively light but the number of accidents is pretty high. this is a sigalert, 280 at 101 we continue to follow this, the accident involving what was originally a report of reckless

driving but chp is going to give us details. we know that the left -- or one lane is still blocked, the right lane as you approach northbound 101, continuing with the slow down from geneva to the 101 interchange. 101 is clear there. the other side of the bay, we still have the closure. looks like it will last all morning long after that accident by the golf course. closed between john davy and memorial, not affecting doolittle. the major roads can get through. keep that in mind. we're hooking at the action as well, 680, the off ramp we had a car into a light pole. they moved that out of the roadway but you'll have one lane blocked. no slowing through the south bay. back to you. zm thank you.

it's a big time showdown as lawmakers step up to battle the securing of funding for high speed rail systems. the state senate voting today on whether to approve billions for the bullet train project. yesterday the assembly passing the measure, the money being ear-marked for the initial phase of construction and to win support democratic liters adding for the existing rail hines. >> inboat today and tomorrow will provide the last piece of the funding puzzle. it will provide the last piece of the funding puzzle for b.a.r.t.'s rail tar mod werization. >> the first track could be laid down as early as next year. >> president obama will sign a bill that will interest drivers and college students, a bill will will set aside $105 billion for highway and rail improvements. another portion of that same bill provides interest rates of

federal student loans from doubling. that increase would have affected more than seven million students. >> the walk to school will soon be safer. caltrain givening $48 million to projects to help provide safer routes for school children. contra costa county, santa claire county awarded $450,000. this will pay for sidewalk, bikeling and speed signs to remind drivers to show it down. caltrainses says it will encourage more to walk to school or take a like to school. >> 6:10. a big money offer from the houston rockets. but it doesn't mean he's heaving the big apple. >> how about a big meeting this morning thetalk about all of that violence in syria.

to decide about syria. >> the talks are under way in paris. france's president opening up the meeting calling syria's crisis a threat to world peace and security. we can tell you a senior member of syria's regime has fled to turkey. this is a big deal. it would be the highest level defection of a follower of president assad since the rebellion more than a year ago. >> and wikileaks says it will publish more than 2 million e-mails from syria revealing interaction between the syrian government and western companies. >> 6:14. breaking news. police at the scene of a violent crash in alameda. we're learning all of the victims are teenagers. marla tellez is live at the scene. >> reporter: laura, good morning. this is island drive, this is going to be closed for several hours. police are telling us at least

through 10:00 this morning, and you're hooking at the reason why. this is hard to see. this is a four-door sedan, all we can make out. the top is sheered off. it's a single vehicle accident. what we understand from police we are just learning that this happened about 1:30 this morning. involving six teens, all under the age of 18, in fact, five 15-year-olds and one 13-year-old. police are just releasing this information that the 15-year-old driver was taken to highland hospital with life threatening injuries. the other five passengers all went to the hospital but they have sustained non-life threatening injuries so those five are said to be okay. the the driver of the car, 15 years old. the car looks like it belongs to one of the passengers' parents and they used it without permission. you can see investigators on scene this morning canvassing

the scene several hours after this accident happened. we see them taking photos, they brought their measuring tapes. near alameda golf course is going to be closed at least through 10:00 this morning. police say they are looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in this single vehicle accident. that's the latest. marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> that is so sad. thank you, marla. we told you about that south bay florida life guard fired for saving a swimmer, he has been offered his job back but he says thanks but no thanks to the company that runs that, fired thomas lopez for leaving his area to try and help out a swimmer. the news caused a big public uproar and his employer finally offered to let him come back and get his job. he turned that job down. three other life guards have quit. >> we are 21 days away from the

days, then we heat up as this ridge of high pressure takes the storm track to the north. it will be dry. and then you'll notice that moisture creeping in. monsoonal flow is back in the mix. that means we could see isolated thunderstorms, the best chancech that tuesday into wednesday. friday, breezy at the coast. you'll notice the winds hike you did yesterday. we call them sun counselors toward the end of the day into the evening. and your sunset at 8:35. high pressure is going to bring our temperatures way up, though, as we head through sunday, monday, tuesday, talking about mid-90s. and i held off just a touch. i could be taking the temperatures up more so, we could see this ridge really amplify, that's what we're watching for. so no triple digits just yet. we'll let you know if that changes when we meet back on

monday. mike has been a busy man. let's see if this is any improvement. >> there is significant improvement. told you about this sigalert going on northbound 280 in toward 101. that injury accident and all of the emergency vehicles are clearing. so over the last five minutes i've seen considerable improvement. 101 has been a pleasure for the last half hour. that will get slower on that side of the bay. we're looking to the east bay. this serious accident involving six teenagers, the investigation continues and that's why island drive will remain until about ten clock in the morning. the construction that cleared from 85, cupertino crews cleared. slowing on 101, that's going on partly kicked off by an accident northbound 101 past 680 around alum rock, an accident on the

>> we were waiting for these numbers, we brought them to you live t jobs report shows unemployment rate unchanged at 8.2%. brian mooar is live on capitol hill this morning with more on what these numbers really say about our current economic situation. good morning, brian. >> reporter: well, laura, what it says is nothing good, not really anything super bad but i mean, just disappointing. that's the headline today. disappointing. economists hoped for a lackluster number like 100,000, maybe 90,000. but really, 80,000? that's what we ended up with. 80,000 non-farm payroll jobs added in june. 8.2% is the unemployment rate. that's the good news and the bad news. not going up, not going down. for president obama it makes the

1:30 this morning when all of the 911 calls started pouring in. we want to give you a look at the scene. a single car crash on island drive near the alameda municipal golf course. island drive is going to be shut down for a few more hours. you can see investigators on the scene. the car itself is hard to look at. just to be simple and honest. it's a four-door sedan. can't even make out what kind of car it is, the top sheered off. you can see the air bags did deploy. the saddest part, six teens under 16 years old, five of them 15 years old, and one 13-year-old were inside this car when it crashed. it collided with a tree. the driver, 15, is at highland hospital with life threatening injuries. this is according to police. the five passengers all taken to the hospital as well but they are expected to survive.

to the south bay, northbound 101, this accident we're following around alum rock, north of 680 is in the median so it's out of lanes, slowing distraction. the build of the commute as well. an accident here near the transition and looks like one lane is blocked. might be a one car spun around there. we're looking at no major issues, light volume in past curtner into downtown. we have this closure for island droyv. that right by the golf course, that's closed from john dave tee memorial. that does not affect hasher bay or do bitle. those are both open. we'll look at the rest of the maze. a quick look throughout shows no metering lights. that's the reason why. >> look at that. is any one awake? everybody's home? >> been asking myself.

we're going to look at some of your beach cities coming up. i wanted to start with san jose. we had less cloud cover yesterday that the time. an indication of a comfortable afternoon. limited sunshine to start. climbing from the mid to upper 50s now into the 70s and 80s in the warmest cities across the bay. high pressure is taking the storm track to our north so it's going to be dry. that will be the case. then through next week, up to the monsoonal moisture through the bay area. before it gets muggy, this weekend should be okay, by saturday a few 90s but the low 90s. if you wanted to hit the beach, you have the kids, pacifica looks good. winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour. half moon bay a little warmer. temperatures approaching 67 but the warmest beach city where you get the most sunshine will be

are still on seen. this happened about 1:30 this afternoon. the top of the car pretty much sheared off. the air bags deployed. about 1:30 is when the 911 call started pouring in on this crash near the alameda golf course. six teens were inside. behind the wheel a 15-year-old driver now foyting for life. and the passengers, four of them also 15 years old, and one of them 13 years old. they are in the hospital as well but mess say they have non-life threatening injuries. again, the cause of this accident is under investigation by alameda police. we understand that the sergeant is going to give us an update about 7:30. island drive said to be closed through 10:00 this morning. >> tragedy out there. thank you. >> 6:58.
