good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a sunday morning. i'm lester holt. >> i'm jenna wolfe. the whole practice makes perfect doesn't apply when you're high wiring across large -- >> i was just saying that we don't have a net for what we do. >> which in many ways is exactly the same thing. >> the same thing. >> we're talking about the heat wave this morning. it's been brutal over the last couple of weeks, in some places even deadly, being blamed for 61 deaths. >> finally it is set to break in many places starting today. if you live out west, look out. we'll tell you more about that in a moment with the forecast. then, is your computer a ticking time bomb? thousands of people might not be able to get on the internet starting tomorrow because of a virus lurking in the computers. coming up, we're going to tell you what you can do to protect yourself. >> i just read about that this morning. >> the virus. >> yes. but there say remedy for it. we'll bring you the important information. also ahead, an unusual case of what would be described as bullying the bully.

a connecticut man has been arrested. he's accused of paying a teenager to fight a girl that he believed was bullying his daughter. we'll hear what he has to say about the allegations coming up. plus, it's an online video that has many people talking, jeremiah mcdonald, follow me here, he filmed himself in 1992 when he was 12 years old, asking questions to himself 20 years into the future. the two people you see, that's the same person right there. 20 years later, jeremiah is now a filmmaker and he recut the footage to make it look like the two are having a real conversation. it is smart and it is funny. more than 4 million people have watched it online. he's going to be here live to tell us what's behind the online sensation. >> very clever. >> very, yeah. let's begin with the deadly heat wave today. a little relief is finally on the way. but as nbc's michelle franzen reports, the weather is leaving a lot of suffering in its wake. >> reporter: the heat wave gripping much of the country for the past two weeks added more

misery. >> i would rather have it 20 below zero than 102 degrees because 102 just drains you. >> reporter: and extreme heat extended to the east coast and mid-atlantic. in washington, d.c., triple digit temperatures left parks and playgrounds empty. experts issued a warning about the life threatening effects from the heat. >> it is important we realize that everybody can be at risk for extreme heat. and so heat related illnesses and heat related deaths do not discriminate. >> reporter: in new york city's central park, runners took extra precautions, working out early to beat the oppressive heat and humidity. >> it is harder. everything is a bit harder. try to pour water, keep portion water, keep taking sips, go slow. more than 33 states have seen triple digit temperatures in last ten days. when you factor in the heat index, how it feels, it is even more painful. in indianapolis, police broke a car window after someone reported seeing an infant locked inside. in hard hit west virginia and

the d.c. area, utility crews are still working to restore power. more than a week after the destructive storm hit. >> it was unbearable. you can't live like this. >> reporter: there was some relief as cooler temperatures began to move in. the start of what many hope will be the end to this brutal heat wave. for "today," michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. and dylan dreyer from our boston station whdh is joining us this morning with the latest on the heat wave. good to have you this morning. >> wonderful to be here. thank you very much. i'm happy to say we're finally going to get some relief from this brutal heat wave. i mean, it's not going to be perfect today, but today's our transition day. we are going to see temperatures start cooling off instead of widespread heat warnings across the area, instead we're seeing heat advisories still now pushing into the ohio river valley and it is still muggy. we're not looking at total relief here, but, today is our transition day.

we're still in the upper 70s. feels like we're in the upper 70s with the humidity. it will be a little bit muggy. tomorrow looks awesome. we're looking at normal temperatures to work back into the northeast. this dip in the jet stream is going to bring us the relief we have been waiting for. but the west is going to deal with the brutal heat with temperatures out that way about 10 to 15 degrees above average. here, though, especially across the eastern great lakes, we're looking at temperatures to be about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. new york city will still get up to about 90 today with majority of the heat pushing down across the southeast. and tomorrow, instead of being in the 90s, it looks like we'll see more widespread 80s. if you can get through it for one more day, more relief as we go into tomorrow. >> great news. >> you know it is a bad sign when we're applauding 90. whoo, 90 degrees. we'll have the rest of the forecast in a little bit. mandy drury is here with a look at the rest of the morning's top stories. >> good morning, everyone at

home. this country is not the only country dealing with extreme weather this weekend. in britain, rivers burst their banks, killing several people, flooding homes and washing out roads. and president vladimir putin has flown to the black sea region of southern russia to look at the flooding that killed more than 140 people there. over 11 inches of rain fell overnight while people were sleeping. gusty winds maybe partly to blame for a fatal construction accident in texas. two workers were dismantling a construction crane on saturday when it suddenly collapsed. 50-mile-an-hour wind gusts were blowing through the richardson campus of the university of texas at dallas at the time. major donor nations including the united states pledged today to give afghanistan $16 billion for civilian needs over the next four years. the financial support is to show there won't be a mass exodus from afghanistan when u.s. and nato troops begin withdrawing next year. but for the first time, the donors are insisting that the

afghan government reduce widespread corruption to get all the money. a chinese acrobat survived a fall after a tight rope today in central china. he was walking backwards 657 feet above the ground with his eyes covered when he slipped. the acrobat didn't take any safety precautions except for the pole he used to keep balanced. he fell about 130 feet, but didn't appear to be seriously injured. the acrobat says he fell slightly -- fell slightly faint after walking more than 50 minutes and he slipped because of the winds. well, several more thrill seeking runners have been trampled as bulls thundered into the cobblestone streets of pamplona in pain spoespain toda. there were no serious injuries on the second day of the week long festival. and finland has hosted its annual wife carrying world championship games. some husbands needed a little help to make it around the

southeast. and it is going to trigger some thunderstorms possible as we look across virginia and the mid-atlantic, even possibly severe storms later on this afternoon across baltimore area, also across washington, d.c. and it does look like the biggest threat with the storms would be for some hail and also some gusty winds. that's a loo and that's your latest forecast. lester? >> dylan, thanks. now to politics. president obama returns to the white house today after a bus tour through pennsylvania and

ohio. and challenger mitt romney is fueling new chatter about his potential running mates. nbc's mike viqueira is at the white house for us. mike, good morning. >> reporter: president obama and mitt romney spent one last day out of sight, resting with their families, but both campaigns had their ground games going full tilt as mitt romney considers his options for number two on the ticket. in florida saturday, they were pounding the pavement, looking for support in person. and over the phone. it was the same in virginia. >> thank you very much, johnny. >> reporter: and new hampshire, both campaigns looking for votes in swing states, where every vote counts. >> would you be interested in volunteering? >> i believe i would. >> reporter: while mitt romney spent much of last week vacationing in new hampshire, his surrogates have been busy. >> let's decide this one for mitt romney. >> reporter: ohio republican rob portman said to be on romney's short list for a running mate was also in new hampshire saturday. and staying mum on his chances. >> what matters is we have

energy and enthusiasm on the republican side. >> reporter: romney along with a handful of class advisers is considering his options for the number two slot. >> it is being done in a very methodical, internal way. you don't hear about a rush to judgment. >> reporter: kelly aot of new hampshire was at romney's side on the fourth. but there are a number of possible choices including louisiana governor bobby jindal. >> he actually has a long resume for somebody so young. >> reporter: former minnesota governor tim pawlenty, who weighed in on the veepstakes himse himself. >> the most important quality in selecting a vice presidential candidate is somebody who is ready to be president on day one. >> how are you? >> reporter: florida senator marco rubio. >> the candidate that most excites the republican base. >> reporter: and wisconsin congressman paul ryan, architect of the gop budget plan. republican faithful say the ultimate decision could be crucial. >> he needs to find someone that he agrees with, that he can work with, but also that is going to light the conservative base on fire in the fall. >> reporter: and, lester, mitt

romney leaves new hampshire today, heading for the hamptons, two closed door fund-raisers, one with conservative billionaire david coke, he, of course, is revered on the right, but reviled on the left. >> mike viqueira in washington this morning, thanks. here's jenna. police in connecticut say they have never seen anything like this. a father is accused of hiring a teenager to beat up a girl who was bullying his daughter. the story now from nbc's veronica de la cruz. >> reporter: philip says his daughter was being bullied constantly in school and on facebook. finally, the insults, taunting and touching got to be too much and she told her family. >> people would trip me in the hall i wways or grab my stomach say i was pregnant and how far along i was. >> reporter: police say the father hatched a plot to pay a 17-year-old girl to fight the 13-year-old who the girl says was one of her worst tormenters. >> a lot of people know i have a

business, i get paid a lot of money, i'm going to pay $21 for a fight, it is so absurd, it is ridiculous. >> reporter: he said they went to a local diner to confront the alleged bully and to tell her to leave his daughter alone. then a fight broke out in the parking lot between the so-called bully and another girl that girl was arrested and accused of taking money to bully the bully. >> screaming and cryinging, she was assaulted by an older per n person. >> she was picked up and thrown head first into a car. my daughter did end up with a concussion, yeah. >> reporter: he said the girls once had words, but if there was a problem, the father should have come to him. her parents say she's a victim, not a bully. >> she struggles with it. she looks over her shoulder. >> i'm not going to do anything like that. i don't believe two wrongs make a right. that's absolutely the wrong approach. >> reporter: philip will be in court tomorrow. for "today," veronica de la cruz, nbc news.

your internet request to impostor websites. it is already attacked more than half a million computers. >> it was absolutely brilliant what these guys were doing. they found a way to tap into one of the most lucrative sources of money on the internet, and that's online advertising. >> reporter: last fall, the fbi busted the ring in operation ghost click. it then seemlessly redirected users to a safety net, but the safety net expires tomorrow, which some are calling internet doomsday. the good news, there is still time to check whether or not you've been infected by going to the website, dns-ok.us. >> once you're on that website, you'll see, you'll either see a green screen that will come up and say your resolution is green, that means it is okay. if it shows up red, that means you're infected with the virus. >> reporter: if you're infected, you can fix the problem using a free kit on the anti-virus software site kaspirski.

>> you're going to click on that, you need to install the software. it installs really quick. once it installs, you go ahead and open it, like you would any other software you're installing. click on yes once it shows up. you'll see it going through its process to install and now it is ready to scan. so once you start to scan, it is going to scan your computer, look for any threats, and remove that virus if it is your system. >> reporter: the fbi warns there could be more viruses like this in the future. >> i don't believe this is going to be the last that we see of it. and don't believe it was first either. >> reporter: expertes say safeguard your computer now, update your anti-virus software and don't click on anything that seems too good to be true. computers at 12% of fortune 500 companies and 4% of government agencies are reporting -- reportedly still infected with the mal ware. even if your computer is fine you should expect some customer service delays tomorrow. still to come on a sunday edition of "today," tennis, anyone? why great britain is going wild over one of its own today.

back down to the 80s shortly. all this cold front moving in from north to south. it does come with some severe weather. we could see some strong storms later on this afternoon, across virginia, down across the nation's capital and then we are going to see that front continue to push to the south, bringing the rain a little farther to the south with that slight risk of stronger storms down across the carolinas as we go into tomorrow afternoon. and it is still hot out west. that's where the next heat wave is starting to set up. that's a look at the weat country.. >> for more on the cooldown

heading across the northeast, you can always check out the latest information on weather.com. lester? >> all right, dylan, thanks. rumors have been flying ever since tom cruise and katie holmes announced their split. was scientology to blame? today, some are making startling accusations about the role of scientology in their marriage. here is nbc's josh mankiewicz. >> reporter: katie holmes' surprise divorce case may have caught many off guard, but tom cruise biographer andrew morton thinks it was meticulously planned. >> katie holmes behavior like she was escaping from alcatraz, like from prison. >> reporter: only katie knows the real reason for the breakup. there has been no shortage of speculation. morton says the church of scientology has been part of the tomkat union from the start. >> scientology was effectively the third wheel, the third person in the marriage. >> reporter: journalist mark

ebbner has been writing about hollywood and scientology for 15 years. >> we all heard the stories of how mr. cruise was supposedly auditioning actresses to date and then marry. that seems very difficult to believe. you know, he's tom cruise. people are lining up, right? >> tom cruise is not your average movie star. he's a scientologist. the church and his handlers within the church will do everything they can to find the quote/unquote perfect wife for tom cruise. >> reporter: it sounds difficult to believe, which makes this man's story all the more interesting. mark headily worked in video production for the church at the time. and he says he was part of that team tasked with finding the next mrs. cruise. >> any and all scientologists that were actresses we auditioned them. there was no part. it was just what do you think about tom cruise, what have you done in scientology? >> reporter: but apparently none

made the cut. and he says a list of women including katie holmes was drawn up. >> after all the girl scientologists or female scientologists were exhausted, it was, like, okay, we have to move outside of the herd. >> reporter: the church of scientology insists there was no project to find tom a wife. calling that a blatant lie. headily split from the church in the months before tom and katie met. he sued the church over what he claimed were inhumane working conditions. he lost and is now appealing. but whatever the back story, tom and katie did end up together and at least for a time katie seemed to be more than happy to be in effect the first lady of the church of scientology. >> i have looked into it myself and i really like it. and i think it is really wonderful. >> reporter: but now this hollywood romance has gone way off script. for "today," josh mankiewicz, nbc news, los angeles.

and you can see much more on this story tonight on "dateline" at 7:00, 6:00 central right here on nbc. and now here's jenna. lester, thank you. aimee copeland, the young woman battling flesh eating bacteria has been in rehabilitation facility for less than a week. already she's making great strides. here is nbc's mark potter. >> reporter: for aimee copeland who suffered so much, it is an important step, trumpeted on facebook by her father andy who writes, just a quick note, aimee fed herself today for the first time, she can also now brush her own teeth. how's that for only four full days of rehab? yeah, i'm beaming from ear to ear right now. in an interview with nbc news, he explained more about why he is beaming. >> here's aimee, already in a very short period of time, i think tackled one of the most important things that you need to do and that's to be able to feed yourself. she's already asserting her independence at a very early

stage in rehab. >> reporter: last week, aimee was transferred from a georgia hospital to a rehabilitation center. the 24-year-old lost her left leg, her right foot and both hands to a flesh eating bacteria after injuring herself during a zipline accident in early may. copeland says his daughter is now using velcro cuffs attached to the ends of her arms for the fork and toothbrush attached. dr. steven lamb with the new york university school of medicine is most impressed. >> clearly this is excellent progress. i think that just surviving this infection, this nasty spreading infection, which kills maybe up to 50% of its victims, is already a great accomplishment. >> reporter: later this week, aimee is scheduled to be fitted with her first prosthetics and looks forward to using artificial hands and eventually learning to walk again. >> i'm excited just to see her excited and to continue to see her excel at the things that she does. >> reporter: one of aim ooee's

you, right? >> yes. >> is there someone else you were talking to? >> no, i was just -- i was obsessed with time travel stories. i constantly fantasized about what my future self would be. and so it was just a natural extension of that, just imagining what am i going to be like and what -- >> were you waiting to turn 32 before you released this and started editing it and putting it together. did you want to try this earlier? >> i did try earlier versions of it and they didn't -- there was one i did about six years ago, which didn't quite work because people didn't -- when i showed it to people, they would watch and say, that's cute, who is that kid playing you? well, that's me. i was so naive, it didn't occur to me that people wouldn't think that kid was me. in this version, i had to prove it, which is why i start with the montage, i try to demonstrate and show the progression. >> you put this thing on youtube. within 24 hours, 1.6 million people already watched. were you surprised by the success of it so quickly? >> completely.

this morning on "today's relationships," divorce after 50. it can be surprising to hear of a couple who have been married for many decades, suddenly splitting up. but new research shows that those 50 and older are leaving their marriages with the hope of starting over. nbc's kristen dahlgren has more. >> reporter: it happened to al and tipper gore, robin williams and his wife, even arnold and maria. divorce after decades of marriage. according to new research out of bowling green state university,

there is a growing group getting late in life divorces. >> back in 1990, fewer than one in ten people who got divorced were over the age of 50. and we find in our paper that today one in four people getting divorced are 50 or older. >> reporter: the gray divorce revolution shows marriage isn't what it used to be. >> kids suggest that marriage is becoming more optional. >> reporter: the piece says it is women more than men who initiate the split, which according to pepper swartz, aarp's love and relationship ambassador, says makes sense. >> they're the ones that get tired of doing all the work and they say, i'm not getting back what i need here. >> reporter: karen filed for divorce from her husband at 53 years old. >> i've been married for 32 1/2 years. the last several years were tough. my ex-husband was not a bad man at all. but every marriage has its ups and downs and ours just was on a downward spiral. >> reporter: with her daughter

>> reporter: for "today," kristen dahlgren, nbc news, los angeles. >> and divorce lawyer raul felder is the author of "the good divorce." good to have both of you on. why are they calling it quits? why are they unhappy? >> it is the way we're redefining marriage. in the '50s and '60s, it was about was everybody operating and doing their roles. was the man being the provider and was the wife doing her work. in the '70s, it was more about personal fulfillment and women and men would look at each other and say is this marriage emotionally fulfilling? that combined with the increase of divorce and it not being as stigmatized as it was in the past is getting people to rethink, is marriage really a life-long institution? >> raul, what are you seeing in your practice? >> we're seeing more geriatric divorces. the lawyer's joke, why did you wait so long to get divorced, waited for the kids to die. but we see more of it --

>> i got you. >> we see more of it, and more complications because of it. there is -- when you get married again, there is an 800 pound gorilla in the room and that's the kids from the other marriage. that's a complicating factor. finances are a complicating factor. >> when you have that many years invested in a marriage, there is a lot of property. it is a more complicated divorce, i would think, than if you were in your 30s. >> absolutely. what happens if you're married six weeks and suddenly get a stroke. well, when you got 30 years invested in a marriage, 20 years, one takes care of the other other. if you get that stroke after two years of a new marriage, it is why should i take care of him. >> what are some of the emotional pitfalls of divorcing after years and years of marriage? in many cases, the only relationship you've known for a long time. >> i think there is this notion that divorce is a solution. for people who want to reinvent themselves or reexperience themselves, they sometimes

choose divorce as a way to do that, without thinking about how will your children react. sometimes they're very upset and disappointed. what are the financial realities that are available to you and in your future. and also it means the loneliness, sometimes people need to face, and also medical issues. there are going to be a lot more seniors who are dealing with severe medical issues alone. so all of these things really need to be taken into consideration and not impulsively, you know, thought through. >> we heard from that other couple, they feel like they're starting over. but starting over means dating again. and that's a whole another can of worms. >> you have a 55-year-old, really 19-year-old person. they're going back to what they did at 19, what they should have done at 19. it is tough. and the doctors call us to live longer, they give us chemicals, viagra, a quality of life, capitalism, it is a success to certain people and they have enough money for multiple
