starts to build for san jose. we'll show you the latest slowdown coming up. >> a live look outside, san francisco, you can't even see the transamerica pyramid. it's monday, july 9th. this is "today in the bay." >> good monday morning. >> 6:00 straight up. what's happening out there. good morning. i'm jon kelley. thanks for joining us. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. developing news this morning in the east bay. it is not the place you would expect to hear about mass shootings but this morning oakland police looking for a gunman who opened fire on a theater crowd at jack london square. bob redell is live for us gathering information. >> reporter: good morning to you. we know that there are witnesses that police have been speaking with, a, to figure out what led up to this shooting and b, to figure out who was behind this

to try to get a suspect description. trying to figure out what led up to this shooting outside the regal cinema's theaters. it happened last night. five people were show. according to one report three of the people actually got to oakland children's hospital for treatment by a private car. two others were transported by ambulance. police found one person laying wounded in front of the theater, the other around the block. all five people are expected to survive. none of those injuries are life threatening. whoever shot those people is still out there and police have not released a description. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> new this morning the pentagon, yes, confirming six american soldiers have died in a single bombing attack. this happened in eastern afghanistan. the soldiers along with five afghan police officers and 18 civilians ended up dying in the explosion. another deadly attack on nato

troops in the southern part of that country made sunday one of the deadliest this year for western forces. >> a major announcement from the white house today. president obama will call for a one-year extension of the bush era tafrm cuts. they are set to expire on january 1. the extension would apply only to families earning less than $250,000 a year. it's expected to frame the upcoming days of the presidential campaign as the republicans push the cuts to higher wage earners. we'll have a live report from washington coming up. >> 6:02. it's that time of year and a wild fire north of the bay area burned more than 1200 acres. this all started over the weekend in the area of mendocino national forest. cal fire says the so-called mill fire tripled on sunday alone.

state and federal fire crews trying to tackle it from the ground and the air. some camp grounds have been evacuated and the mendocino national forest getting ready for a closure. >> amtrak is running after a fire on an east bay train bridge on a trestle north of benicia sunday afternoon. two amtrak trains were delayed for about an hour and a half. it's not clear what started the fire but the fire captain says it's not unusual for train brakes to throw sparks. >> your computer is on its own. during the night fbi cut off access to servers protecting tens of thousands from destructive malware. scott joins us with what this means. >> it means you may wake up with no facebook. the fbi set up special servers to defeat that malware. it's one of the only times the u.s. government has gotten

involved in protecting the internet. they turned that off at midnight. because of all the advanced warnings tens of thousands were able to get the malware off their computer. if you haven't heard of it and you wake up and you don't -- aren't able to get on the web, you will need to contact your internet service provider. so to be clear, this is not a situation where some point to computer bug struck. this has been around for a year causing trouble. it's that the good guys shut down the protection at midnight so starting today you're on your own. if you have trouble call your ifp. >> a south bay church down but not out after recent break-ins. east san jose's church held sunday mass as usual but what was missing in yesterday's service was the music. thieves had broke sboon the church stealing $25,000 of

instruments. the church leaders are upset over all of the hard work that went into afiring that equipment. >> what they took was a lot of labor and people's effort and will. to me was more upsetting about that. >> our lady of guadeloupe reaching out to the community to help raise money for new instruments. no arrests had been made. i heard on thursday they are going to have a mayo meriochi f. >> it's 6:05. meteorologist christina loren says getting to be hot in the city. >> a little calenti for that fest. a live look outside, this is san francisco. you can't make it out. we have completely fogged in conditions. you can see the highway and the tops of the buildings. but mostly cloudy this morning.

at least here. over the 85, 87 intersection. we'll check the drive with mike. what i wanted to show you by 10, maybe even noon, mostly clear conditions. high pressure is strong so we'll see temperatures in the 90s which we didn't experience over the course of the weekend. we're talking triple digits as we head into the midsection of the week. today works like this. inland about 86 degrees at noon. up to 91 at 5:00 p.m. highs are coming in at about 5:00 p.m. we don't hit starlight until 9:00. we have changes on the way as i said before, hotter weather, then a cooldown for the weekend. help you sort through all of that. 6:06, first here is mike and your drive. >> tracking this accident or actually traffic hazard in the middle of the freeway. interstate 280 northbound at seventh street. toward downtown reports of some sort of hazard in the middle lane. no details from chp and no slowing over the last few

minutes. 280 is okay, 680 up to highway 87. look at this. 101 on schedule. we have slowing, actually a little more dramatic than we see, though, this time on a monday so. between 680 and 880, we have the speeds into the 30s and 20s now. pretty good burst of traffic for the south bay. let's get a look outside, a live look and see how things are shaping up. backup started for the cash lanes, highway 4 at 242 in concord now reports a car fire. i'll bring you that in my next report. >> thank you. 6:07. how about this, taking the guesswork out of your morning commute. cal train testing a new alert system and marla tellez is live in palo alto with what's being done to try to make your train on time. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. caltrain got started in 1863. fast forward almost 150 years

and the train is set to start testing a first-of-a-kind system, it's a real lime arrival and departure system. they begin testing this today. let's talk to christine dunn with caltrain who is out here live with us. thanks for being with us. >> good morning. thanks for having us. >> reporter: explain how this is going to work. >> we'll have retime information on our signs in all of our stations, we're golsing to have audio announcements that are real time. riders are going to be able to sign up for these messages to get them on their cell phones and we'll display the information on our website. >> so currently this is not an option for passengers so they know when their train is supposed to arrive but it can be late. >> that's right. they have the schedule information. we don't have real time information. this is a first for us. we're excited about it. >> this has been requested for some time. >> right. something that people are asking for, particularly in this area.

the traffic. the council will consider google's plan tomorrow night as part of mountain view's broader development blueprint for the coming decade. >> in sunnyvale, microsoft will officially open a new office at the moffitt towers. they worked in the building since june. the tech giant plans to celebrate the new campus in a grand opening this afternoon. >> in redwood city officials may abandon a plan to build a four-star downtown hotel. tonight the city council considering a different plan to build 100 rental units next to the caltrain tracks on winslow street. leaders say the idea of 120-room hotel has not yet been completely given up on. there is just a greater demand for more permanent housing. >> and san francisco apartments, guess what, might get smaller. the current legal limit is actually 220 square feet. how about this one. developers, a group of them,

pushing the board of supervisors to reduce down to 150 square feet. if you wonder for a reference, that's a little larger than a standard parking space. developers say the city needs more options for young tech workers who i guess aren't very tall. the board will take a vote on the issue on tuesday. >> and yes, when you strike up the band you know what that means, we're closing in on the olympic games. >> pretty exciting. the torch is slowly making its way to the olympic stadium and this morning a bay area teenager helped to get it closer. sarah williams, yeah, look at her there from pleasanton carrying the torch and waving to fans, shaking hands. she went through buckingham outside of london. >> looks like she has security guards. >> you have to watching the torch as well. the 19-year-old was one of 22 americans chosen to run that

torch. she was chosen for her work in organizing her own charity called creative kindness. it donates blankets to foster children. her dad made the trip to england with her and we're told her family was up early this morning just to watch her run live. >> what a great young lady. great honor. >> if you can't get to london but you want to cheer on team usa there is now not surprisingly an app for that. >> of course. >> it's 2012 team usa road to london and allows you to send and receive messages directly from the athletes. it includes stories about their competitors, bios and video clips. check it out. >> i've got to download that app. we know the nfl is crazy popular all over but guess what, fewer people are going out to the stadium and the league knows it all too well. "the wall street journal" reporting average attendance has slipped 4% since 2007. wonder if the economy has anything to do with that. the season, this season, the

league will implement changes like letting fans see the same instant replays as the referees. that's cool. all fans will get free wi-fi. that's very cool. and smart phone apps so they can listen to players wearing microphones out on the field. cool. >> grunts and groans. >> get off me. >> tim lincecum and the giants heading to the all-star break. they were in pittsburgh to wrap up their series with the pirates. lincecum has not won on the road since april and didn't change. pirates jump all over lincecum early. even their pitcher, their pitcher, got an rbi single. lincecum's day ended after 3 1/3 innings, seven hits, six runs allowed. giants lost 13-2. but you know, they are sticking by lincecum as good fans should. he's going to make his next scheduled start on saturday. he has been a little down lately. hang in there, timmy.

morning. beautiful live look. what's beautiful about this, i know you're probably looking at this blue shot thinking that's not that beautiful. it is because we have low clouds that are going to keep us cool. we'll wake up on wednesday with a completely clear skyline and as a result temperatures will soar into the triple digits. so it's time for the dog days of summer in the bay area. 55 in san francisco, 60 in sunnyvale, at 6:20 this morning, and 58 in san jose. your weather headlines, cloudy start, a sunny finish. today hotter, 90s in the warmest cities across the bay. then we bring in the triple digits as we head through wednesday, that's when we'll peak when high pressure will be at its strongest. you can see the clouds wrapping around that ridge of high pressure. what that is is that monsoonal flow so. if you are headed to southern california, thunder boomers there. for us, we might see isolated mountain thunderstorms as we led to wednesday, but the bigger concern as you know if you lived in california, any part of the

state, we're concerned about fire danger this time of year. you really want to take it easy with your barbecues, camp fires, watch them closely. make sure the fire is completely out before you leave it. you'll be in high fire danger territory this week with high temperatures and winds that will be strong enough to keep the red flag warnings in place. i wouldn't be surprised to see a red flag go up wednesday to thursday. as we head throughout tuesday into wednesday, very hot especially through your inland valleys. then we'll cool off a touch thursday into friday. let's see how cool or hot the drive is. >> hot, talking about fire danger. we're extra worried about car fires. sounds like this is a little dramatic but the only one i had for car fires. this is in the east bay a car fire westbound highway 4, it approaches 242, a car fire, a

smoking car. on the shoulder and the driver is out. we have slowing, 242, for a few minutes, now a smoother drive. plan on your typical drive out of antioch and maybe extra slowing through concord. westbound 580 into livermore and maybe slowed a little at vasco because of abaccident. i'll show you slowing in my next report. back to you. >> thanks so much. >> 6:22 now. and wall street continues to ponder the jobs pictures. >> after another disappointing employment report on friday, we brought it to you live. and scott mcgrew joins us, more of the same. >> the economy is stuck in neutral. the chances that the fed are going to have to step in again increases mightily. over the weekend some fed governors spoke about the need for a stimulus to get the american economy moving after the jobs report said 80,000 jobs added.

yet another month we seem stuck in neutral. we start earning season today, big companies opening to investors. bay area nps thursday, we'll hear from wells fargo, intel and yahoo!. yahoo! is probably going to announce its interim ceo is its official ceo. ebay and ibm and amd and safeway on the next day. this earning season will park the second time that facebook reports its profits. facebook and yahoo! on friday were able to hammer out an agreement over yahoo!'s patent dispute and "the wall street journal" reports that facebook will start providing job leads to users much like you might find on monster. we think of facebook as a finished product. it's a great deal of potential there that has been untapped as facebook begins to do something with all of those connections.

if your train is late. using technology caltrain will be able to track its trains and send that information directly to passengers in an e-mail or text message, whatever they prefer, and the information will be posted on station message boards and announced. it has been a long time come forge passengers who rely on it every day and a late train could mean no more paycheck. >> very important. i have to be at work. if i'm not at work i can lose my job. >> very important. very important going to jobs. they may be fired for being late. it could be. >> reporter: the testing runs today through friday from 10:00 until 3:00. so it will not affect rush hour commuters. if you are on the train from 10:00 to 3:00, all you hear is some testing announcements. it hopes to get this system in

flies have it go live by the end of the year. live in palo alto, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> the search is on for a great white this morning off santa cruz after a 52-year-old fremont man posted this picture on his blog. he says he was kayaking saturday when a shark estimated to be 18 feet long took a bite out of his boat. you can see the damage and the shark even left a tooth. i guess they x-rayed the kayak. on his blog mel goes into details. he says it started with a violent jolt. i saw the shark's head coming out of the water and bite the starboard underside. his head was gray and his white underneath all over his mouth. i can still she the seriousness on his eyes. this all happened in about two seconds. the force of the attack threw mel into the water and turned

fair. police arrested a livermore man accused of slapping a show pig and pulling its ears and tails. the suspect was well above the legal alcohol limit. if we think alcohol could have possibly been involved. 22-year-old was released from custody with the condition that he stay away from the fair and actually get help from alcoholics anonymous. >> and stay away from pigs. 6:42. caltrain launching a new system to help you catch your ride on time. we'll let you know how this works. >> do you have internet this morning? we'll tell what you to do about it. hmm, it says here that cheerios helps lower cholesterol

california. wild fires burning north of napa county. >> state and federal fire crews are dealing with several in colusa county including one that spread to more than 1200 acres. brian hickey joins us with the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. this is outside of maxwell we're on a road where the chp has the road shut down only to local traffic into the foothills. further up where you can see the smoke over the mountains this morning is where this fire or fires are burning up in the hills in colusa county. you can see the flames, even in the relatively calm cool conditions we're seeing this morning the fire is burning through the canyon. it started as five separate fires yesterday. we're told a couple of those are out or surrounded. a couple of the fires merged into one larger fire. we're told about 2500 acres have burned so far with 10%

with you. if you don't have an air conditioner it's a good idea to try to seek shade, find a beach near the water to stay cool. that's the greatest part of living in the bay area. you only have to travel about 20 miles to lose 20 degrees. so for us, a few 90s on the map. this afternoon the fog will make for a pretty nice start at the beach. you'll get clearing by about noon. that's when you get the sunshine. making for a really nice beach day. of course the warmest city santa cruz, mid-70s. 74 degrees at about 4:00 this afternoon. elsewhere, i'm forecasting 90 in livermore, 86 in south san jose, 84 in the hort of san jose, then we heat you up, tuesday into wednesday, thursday, you might know this song, hot, hot, hot, that's how it's going to be. a good way to remember it. i'd like to strike that from the

record, mike, take it away. >> similar. you thought about that. looking to highway 4, very slow through antioch, traditional. this is the extra slowing we were worried about. concord out of pittsburgh, slowing because of the smoldering car. on the shoulder. speeds into the 40s. also shows the build through concord. that's your slowing for that portion of the east bay. coming into livermore, additional slowing, then it smooths out heading to north livermore. the earlier incident, that's making things even out. that traffic moving south. toward sunol there is slowing for 680 as well. we'll get a look toward the san mateo bridge area. the bridge itself, look at the san mateo bridge. we have slow traffic from the peninsula, the volume is starting to pick up, heading

for new music instruments. no arrests have been made. >> the future of caltrain riders, making it easier to catch your next ride. marla tellez is live in palo alto with an update on the system. good morning. >> reporter: caltrain is going to test their real time arrival and departure system monday through friday this week. you're now going to know if your train is running behind. this is something passengers have been asking for for a very long time. it's possible thanks to gps technology. it will be able to track its trains and send that directly to passengers in e-mail or text message. it which would be posted on board trains and station message boards. feedback is positive though they wish the system was already in place. >> like today. the the train is late. we don't know why it's late.
