>> ah, yes, friday the 13th. >> not april fool day. >> we have to watch her on that day. good morning. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. an emotional bizarre trial that we've been following all week is moving forward again. the computer programmer convicted of killing his wife in 2006, acting as his own attorney, will be back on the stand later today. christie smith is live in hayward with what is next in the hans reiser trial. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. hans reiser has already taken the stand twice. that happened yesterday. in court he described how he killed his wife and why he also admitted he would have never led police to her body if he had not been found guilty of murder and then offered a lighter sentence in exchange. reiser is representing himself and being sued by his own children for $15 million in

damages for the loss of their mom nina reiser. their attorney is here and forced him to admit that his kids suffered wondering what happened to their mom. he showed a sketch what if reiser's son drew the night his mom disappeared from their home. >> this little boy saw his dad carrying his mom in a bag down the stairs on the night she disappeared. he remembered that and he'll, unfortunately, remember that for the rest of his life. >> reporter: hans reiser called himself as a witness twice. he said that she made up ailments that the kids didn't have and admitted that nina reiser never hurt them. the judge ordered him to stop speculating on his wife's disorders. closing statements could begin as early as today. reporting live, christie smith,

"today in the bay." >> the city of oakland reeling this morning after suffering through seven murders over seven days. now the mayor and police chief say they have a plan. the chief says he is working on ways to do more with less, restructuring his department by moving his investigative and gang task force officers out into the field. he's looking at ways to redeploy forces in the most violent neighborhoods. >> as a department we have to be more pro active and not reactive. we're pretty reactive because of our limited resources. >> we can tell you the city has two academies filled with police prospects. the department hoping to have more officers on the streets in two months. >> lines of police in riot gear in a stand-off with hundreds of occupy protesters. lapd says it was caught offguard by the crowd that threw bottles and rocks at officers. not clear if all were part of the occupy l.a. movement.

two officers were injured. >> a hero's memorial for a redwood city marine who died for his country six decades ago. sergeant james sisney was missing in action after his plane crashed in world war ii. search parties found the wreckage decades later on a south pacific island. his remains arrived at sfo yesterday and today he will be buried at golden gate national cemetery with full military honors. >> after more than two decades of planning and countless delays b.a.r.t.'s oakland connector project marking a milestone. bob redell is live with the latest on connecting planes to trains. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, 20 years of planning, back and forth and budget fights. after all of that time we're finally getting a glimpse of what the oakland airport connector is going to look like. we're here on hegenberger.

many sprouting up along the road. workers are installing on the supports the girders that will make up the track for the connector. over three miles of track over to the airport. running above the road on the tracks will be a new people mover, running every four to five minutes with a travel time of 15 minutes between b.a.r.t. and the airport. this will replace air b.a.r.t. the bus connector that has been criticized for being unpredictable among other things. it's not that this escaped criticism. when the project was proposed more than two decades ago it was projected to cost over $100 million. today the price tag is $484 million. b.a.r.t. likes to point out the project created over 500 jobs, the majority from here in the bay area. the city will commemorate this

with the new track with a ceremony later this morning at 10:00. the final project is supposed to be completed in the spring of 2014. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> the number of evacuations are growing in placer county where the wild fire continues to blaze. cal fire says some 300 people have been forced from their homes north of sacramento, that fire spread to more than 800 acres. this is only 10% contained. more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the fire and they are now working to try to keep that fire from jumping a river. >> the giants may be running out of patience with one of their starting pitchers. >> that is right. tim lincecum is struggling all year trying to find the rhythm. the first half of the season nothing short of a very rough one. he is scheduled to pitch this saturday, taking on the astros. the manager bruce bochy says if lincecum continues to struggle

they will have to consider skipping his next start. >> we certainly need him. a couple of rough starts on the road. we'll see how it goes. i'll leave it at that. >> bochy is confident that lincecum can get his groove back in the second half of the season. the right-hander, check these, has a 6.42 earned run average, the highest of any pitcher in the entire league. timmy has been kind of down and out. a little bummed out. >> you can catch game one of the series here on nbc bay area. coverage starts at 7:00 tonight. lincecum i mean, a lot of pressure, signed that huge deal, $40 million. >> it can turn into a mental thing. >> yeah, that's exactly what it is. >> temperatures i think in the right direction. going down.

temperatures. the sea breeze all day for san francisco and the coast. our temperatures into the weekend looks like we're going to stay mild saturday. a little warmer on sunday but turning cooler. so this mild pattern is going to stick around even as we move into next week. >> folks, you heard rob talk about the potential for rain so if you head to l.a., disneyland, keep that in mind. we're looking here, no issues for the south bay. you had the disabled vehicle. 280, that was made quick work, cleared from the incident report. crews clearing from 85 at the bottom of the screen, should be cleared in seconds. stevens creek and 101, southbound side, should have all of those lanes cleared. we see the slowing out of mountainview. th is gone now. a look outside, a look at the approach for the bay bridge. there is a live look no. problems across the bay. the construction in oakland as well as the east shore freeway, those crews are moving. this is some glow and a little

traffic is picking up out there. mike inouye will tell us all of the details on that. if you haven't checked it's friday, friday the 13th. keep that in mind. it's 5:12. this morning new concerns about safety in the skies. a possible pilot shortage over the next 20 years has aviation officials a little concerned about maintaining quality standards. boeing predicting nearly a half million new pilots will be needed as airlines expand. >> a lot more closed signs in oakland today. today is another furlough day for city workers. the main lie bray, animal shelter and senior centers will be closed. branch libraries will operate under normal hours. parking meters will be enforced. police and emergency services not affected. >> more indications facebook advertisers may not get their money's worth. scott mcgrew, explain. >> the bbc is smearing facebook.

british journalists set up a fake company, a bagel shop. they gave it its own facebook page and advertised their shop through the facebook ad system. they got thousands of likes but the bbc says there were two problems. one is the likes almost never came from great britain. like the philippines. that makes no sense. why would a huge number of filipinos like a store in great britain. which is also a store that doesn't exist in the first place. the bbc had a second problem. it did digging. its bagel customers found many of the people clicked thousands of times and had suspicious profiles like a man born in 97 who claimed to be an executive at chevron. i'll do the math. that person if he exists is 15 years old. speaking of shaky numbers, jpmorgan chase restated its

earnings. it now says that $2 billion loss is a $4.4 billion loss and it's not so sure about other trades. it erased a half billion off of its profits. the company says it still made $5 billion in profits but one expects the bank to get the numbers right the first time. not a confidence builder. let's bring in sima mody. >> we're getting more details as they come out. jamie dimon is having a conference call with analysts to discuss more around the losses. we'll keep you updated as they come on. jpmorgan said it would restate its results and reflecting recently discovered information that raises questions and suggests certain individuals may have been seeking to avoid showing the full amount of the losses in the portfolio during the first quarter. that's jpmorgan.

let's look at the markets. futures are trading higher after stocks fell for a sixth day, matching the market's longest losing streak of the year. investors fretting about the global economy and a number of companies cutting earnings forecasts. we do get data on consumer sentiment so watch for that. how the markets closed yesterday the dow dropped 31 points, the nasdaq lost 21 to close at 2856. mortgage rates fall been to a record low, freddie mac says the average rate on a 30 year fix. rates have set or tied a record. the move mirrors a drop in the yield on the 10-year treasury note with banks typically use to set rates on mortgages. bond yields have declined amid a round of disappointing data including of course last friday's jobs report. guys, i'll send it back to you. >> thank you. a side note, it is a side note,

san francisco's was sold for $500,000. it will continue. digg was one of the first social websites. at one point google expressed interest. a great bunch of guys but that's the way the digg story ends. >> thank you very much. >> 5:17. looks like the weather is changing from a bang to a cool-off. >> much cooler than yesterday. we still have closer to 100 degrees in the tri-valley. today we'll be luck fe we maybe see upper 80s out there. we've got a good strong onshore push of marine air. it's nice and comfortable. inland valleys, 50s across the board, novato down to 45 degrees right now. but notice these wind speeds. traveling across the bay area bridges, up in solano county and contra costa county. winds up to 25 miles per hour which, by the way, good news. cooler temperatures, air quality

fine. the wind helping to stir up the air, push some of it toward sacramento. so that is good news heading into the weekend. if you head up to lake tahoe or southern california we have monsoon moisture tossing scattered showers to kick off the weekend. the bay area, the big story the strong sea breeze. temperatures into tomorrow mild, lots of 70s and low 80s. by the time we finish off the weekend like today, low 80s, warmer into morgan hill and areas further inland like pleasanton. the warmer temperatures the further inland. 65 in san francisco. 70s around the north bay, the south winds pick up. air quality looks good. temperatures also look pretty good. it's the free ocean air conditioning. a little too much for the coast, we'll have fog and misty skies at time. which could impact the morning commute.

temperaturewise looking pretty good. >> definitely feels better. we'll watch. that might be changing. we're looking at antioch, 56 in the westbound commute direction, so you're seeing a little slowing. there it is, a little slowing start to creep in. that's one of your earlier signs of the commute, eastbound t closure from love ridge to summerville. back on, allow five minutes so you can relax and not worry getting off of the freeway. that's only for another few as well. crews should be clearing soon. 580 westbound out of the altamont pass. a slow start. getting out of the area, also a tradition if you head toward tahoe, rob talked about potential for sprinkles and the placer county fire in the forest hill area, keep that in mind as you pass through auburn and colfax. 80 you are okay to drive. the south bay, construction cleared, no problems here. we have construction crews on the dumbarton bridge heading

>> welcome back everyone. a live look outside from the north bay this morning. look at traffic moving pretty smoothly though kind of heavy for a friday morning. >> some parents in the south bay waking up early today to simply get the chance to get their child a school back pack. it's an annual tradition that helps hundreds of low income students. marla tellez is live in san jose with what you need to know if you want to get in on the give away. looks like there are a lot of people out there. >> reporter: yeah, laura, we're estimating that at least 100 people are lined up here at sacred heart in san jose. we're going to give you a look at the line. many have been here since last night. the earliest we heard so far 10:30 last night. parents bringing their kids along, all as a chance to land themselves as back pack filled with complete school supplies for the upcoming school near.

talk a little more about the need and how people can help. >> certainly one of the things that we can use the most help is making sure we have enough back packs. we have increased our number from last year because we still had to turn away a few people at the end of the day during registration last year, so for the 2300 back packs we have about 2,000 to go. not quite enough inventory in there. we hope the community can help us out bringing in the supplies and the back packs for the children. >> thanks so much, jay. they can certainly take your donations, they are looking for black black pack, calculators, usb drives and a donation of $20 can supply one student with a new pair of shoes. so of course the economy has a lot to do with this t the need is great just for the basic supplies. this is just the registration, i should point that out too, that this is just the registration,

>> good friday morning to you. jon is telling us it's friday the 13th. >> i'm reminding everybody. beware. it is 5:30. i'm jon kelley and an east bay jury could start deliberations today in the wrongful death case against a computer programmer, that being hans reiser being sued by his own children for murdering their mother. christie smith is live in hayward with the latest twists and turns in what's been nothing short of a bizarre testimony. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this has been dramatic all along. hans reiser is acting as his own attorney. yesterday he took the stand twice, at one point he compared himself to moses. he also explained to the courtroom exactly how he killed his wife. it's likely we could move into closing statements, yesterday acknowledged he probably never would have led police to the body of his wife had he not been found guilty of murder and offered a lighter sentence in

exchange. reiser is being sued by his two children seeking more than $15 million in damages for the loss of their mother. as to why he didn't answer his kids' questions about their then missing mom, he said the purpose is to protect the child and for the same reason moses hid the body in the sand. he suggested he killed her to protect the kids, that she made you up ailments but also admitted she never hurt them. >> she never did anything to harm the children. then explain to me why you decided to choke her to death and bury her in the hills. he's not a lawyer but even as somebody representing himself i would give him a d-minus at best. >> reporter: throughout the proceedings hans reiser was ordered several times by the judge to stop speculating on claims about his wife's alleged disorder. the kids' attorney said outside the court the more he talks the more he digs himself into a deeper hole.

christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:32. the sexual assault case against pab who sandoval is now in the d.a.'s hands. the sheriff's office says it found no -- insufficient evidence to charge sandoval after a woman claims he sexually assaulted her last month. now the matter moves on to the district attorney's office. >> the case has been submitted to the district attorney so they will make the decision on what happens with regard to the next step in the case. we don't have an indication from them, pablo is focused on the second half of the baseball season and i know the district attorney will review what the sheriff's office has done. we'll wait to hear. >> sandoval's attorney says the encounter was consensual. >> after more than two decades, b.a.r.t.'s oakland airport connector project making a major milestone. bob redell is live with the

latest on the plan to connect planes to trains. >> we're getting a glimpse what if the new oakland airport connector is going to hook like. we're here on hegenberger. in the past 24 hours workers installed the first section of track that will run on the pylons. that's one section. there are hundreds to go. when the project opens in the spring of 2014, there will be two sets of tracks, one in morgan three miles between the coliseum park and oakland airport. on the tracks will be a new automated people mover that will run every four to five minutes, travel time 15 minutes. this will replace air b.a.r.t. t the bus connector criticized for being unpredictable. it's not that this new connector has escaped criticism. when it was first proposed the projected cost was over $100 million. today it's around $484 million.

b.a.r.t. likes to point out the project created more than 500 jobs. the city will commemorate this latest milestone with a ceremony a few hours from now around 10:00 this morning. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> an east bay city is shining a light on foreclosure. the city of richmond is offering a bus tour through neighborhoods that have been impacted by the foreclosure crisis. hollywood had their celebrity star tours. this is what they are representing. city leaders, they want to send a message to big banks to fix the hundreds of abandoned properties. that tour starts at noon today. >> all is quiet again on the streets of l.a. following a rough night. last night riot police clashing with protesters.

lapd was caught offguard by this crowd. this all started over a sidewalk chalk drawing protest. two officers were injured but the streets were cleared after several hours. >> see if the skies are clearing. a lot of folks looking forward to the weekend. 5:30. i know. >> it is early. but never too early to talk about the weekend and the weather we're going to see today. a lot like you're going to see saturday and sunday. 50s outside, some 40s around novato. the story is the push of on shore winds that started late yesterday pushing in low clouds all the way inland. look at the wind speeds. all the way up to 25 miles per hour this morning. air quality we're finally back in the good range. no spare the air days. if you're heading out of the bay area kicking off the weekend in southern california look out for summer rain showers, we've got monsoon moisture moving up through southern california. may impact lake tahoe down to

yosemite. a look at the clouds, the sea breeze is not so good for seeing sunshine on the coast. you can see the low clouds thicken. we could see drizzle, adding up on the rain gauges on the coast between now and tomorrow morning so missy skies and fog likely. lunch time in the 70s inland so comfortable but may be receiving a little chilly on the coast and around the inner bay the next couple of days. temperatures mild, a little warmer sunday as we cool down and head to monday. >> scrambling now because the disabled truck reported here, highway 17 at lexington reservoir, looks like it cleared from the golden gate jurisdiction. that's our side of the summit. but i'm looking at a report for the monterey side. there is a disabled pickup truck toeing a boat. that's closer to glenn wood

drive. the only issue over the summit through the santa cruz mountains. traffic should be able to get by. 87, the slowing that has cleared as you pass by capital expressway to curtner. no major slowing for the south bay. we continue to follow that but no incidents down there. here in the east bay we have frogger road right under that 590 overcrossing there is an injury ry accident. a live look at 880, the volume starting to pick up. the commute direction past the coliseum into downtown. about 15 minutes from 238 up to the toll plaza. >> thanks, mike. >> frogger road. 5:38. they are red, white and blue. lawmakers don't like them.

people are saying that american jobs could have gone into the creation of these uniforms. you want an issue that's going to bring together for the first time in recorded history nancy pelosi and house speaker john boehner, congratulations we found it. senate majority leader harry reid would like to see these uniforms tossed into a pile and burned. he says he's embarrassed but the u.s. olympic committee says it is proud of these uniforms, that america's olympic athletes will wear these in london with pride, they are designed by ralph lauren which is an iconic american label. i got to say they look like an air france crew. >> i don't know. i mean i kind of want a beret. >> come on, they look like they are headed for a north korean missile launch. ak-47s. look at the pictures. i'm just saying.

>> i'm just saying. thorough report. thank you so much. >> i can see you in a beret. maybe do it on friday. joe paterno's family disputing a scathing report on the jerry sandusky scandal. the report accusing paterno of helping cover up sandusky's abuse after long list of children. the family of the late penn state head football coach says the ruling is impossible to accept. they believe it's more likely people misinterpreted what was happening. i'm not sure how that is possible to misinterpret that. sandusky was convict of molesting at least 10 boys. >> meantime, the fallout from the scandal extending to oregon. nike now nixing joe paterno's name from the child care facility at the headquarters. the facility was previously known as the joe paterno child development center until now. the ceo of nike says he's very

saddened by the report released thursday, and called this one, quote, a terrible tragedy. >> i had no idea it was named that. a bomb scare aboard a flight out of jfk airport forced evacuation of more than 200 passengers. a passenger reported strange wiring in the bathroom on a delta flight headed to madrid. an hour after takeoff the plane returned to jfk where it was met by a bomb squad and fbi agents. no explosives were found but the wires did not belong on the plane and they don't know where they came from. >> crews over in japan still cleaning up the damage left by massive flooding. more than 20 inches of rain in 24 hours earlier this week, that is a lot. we learned that the death toll has risen to 19. hundreds of homes totally destroyed. land slide warnings still in effect in parts of southern japan. >> in france, investigators searching for more answers after an avalanche killed nine

mountain climbers, injured a dozen others. that tragedy striking thursday on a slope leading to the famous mount blanc. it was hit with a wall of snow 20 feet tall. there is suggestion a climber may have stepped on ice that triggered the land slide. >> the number of evacuations are growing in placer county where a wild fire continues to grow. 300 people at least have been forced from their homes north of sacramento as the blaze spread to more than 800 acres. right now it's only 10% contained. more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the fire and they are working to keep it from jumping a river. >> 5:45. the hot temperatures, dry conditions, everybody has to be aware. >> the temperatures at least are coming down. but the winds are gusty around the sierra and the bay area the winds that we're seeing are coming in off the ocean, good

news for our air quality and our temperatures through the afternoon. outside this morning you'll notice the blanket of low clouds, 40s and 50s, even the hilltops cooled off. humidity levels are back up so that good news for our local fire danger but gusty as you head out, you're seeing the winds up to 25 miles per hour. wind is a good thing for air quality in terms of ground level lows. we don't have a spare the air day. and ground level lows in the low range. but you might notice particulate matter. so now as the low pressure approaches the west coast, a little bit of good news, i think it's going to push that smoke off to the north and the east. we're watching showers across southern california and the sierra that will continue to stay east of the bay area. drizzle on the coast. and ensuring that the weekend is going to be mild in terms of temperatures. looking at highs today nowhere near 100.
