to the ballpark later on this afternoon, look at this, 59 degrees, fog, and winds gusting up to 30, 40 miles per hour. so it's definitely a cool coastline day today especially in san francisco. so keep those jackets handy. we'll see you in a bit to talk more about the rest of the weekend forecast in a little while. christina lor kris? >> breaking news, firefighters are working on a fire at a lumber yard in the south bay. firefighters say it's happening at monterey road near blanchard on coyote, south of san jose. now the fire was in one of the processing buildings. that building was completely destroyed. the flames spread to another building, and crews have that fire near containment. southbound monterey road is closed, near bailey. reroute if you're head in that direction. san francisco police investigating a deadly shooting which happened on 6th street near mission in the south of

market neighborhood after 11:00 last night. officers at the scene found a 25-year-old man lying on the sidewalk where he had been shot. that man died at the scene. so far, police have not made any arrests. this morning, a warning before you go out on your morning walk or jog. rattlesnake bites on the rise especially in california. "today in the bay," a bite victim in wassonville. >> reporter: a vipicture of a chopped up rattlesnake. construction workers saw it and hacked it up. within picked up the decapitated head and bit them in the hand. >> they keep bite reflexes after an hour after killed. >> reporter: in the past two months, six bites. last year at this time, one. >> if you hear the buzz and it's scares you. >> reporter: justin fields has seen many rattlers in his lifetime. almost got bitten by one as a

kid. >> my feet never touched the ground. >> reporter: rattlesnakes coming out of hibernation in april. rattlers attack if they're surprise ford have to defend themselves. most, but not all bites, have venom. >> the venom is a poison, a toxin, gets injected and causes, spain, swelling, possibly death. >> reporter: this year's dry spring is causing the snakes to go further out to find food. people are seeing more rattlers because we're building homes and parks near their natural habitat. >> he moved this and it situated underneath the can. >> reporter: faith sees rattle snakes almost every day. the rattling sound still gives her chills. >> gets the hamp pumping. >> reporter: george kiriyama "today in the bay." >> warning signs are posted in santa clara county where ranger says folks need to be on the

lookout especially in the sum. >> a candle may to be blame for a house fire on the peninsula which killed a 2-year-old boy and injured three family members. the fire happened yesterday morning on lake drive in san bruno. two construction workers working near didby rushed to the house. they found the man trapped inside and pulled him to safety. the man begs the workers to go back inside for his grandson. >> he told me there was a 2-year-old at the back room. we ran towards the back of the house with the ladder, started breaking windows but couldn't get to hill. it was too full of smoke. >> firefighters believe a candle started the fire in the hallway where the family had a hindu shrine. the grandparents were baby-sitting at the time. they're 234 tin the hospital in critical condition. >> the man charged with killing sierra lamar. the suspect's father is awaiting trial. the 51-year-old is facing

charges of molesting his own daughter for nearly 10 years. he was taken into custody last month after his daughter told police that her father molested her from the time she was 5 years old to when she was 14. his son, 21-year-old, charged with kidnapping and murdering 15-year-old sierra lamar. her body has not been found. he is expected to enter a plea later this month. $25 million, that's how much a lawyer says hans reiser's children should get from their pain. reiser killed his wife who was of course their mother. in closing statements at reiser's civil trial yesterday the attorney representing the reiser children focused on how close the children were to their mother, nina reiser. he then accused the convicted kill of damaging the children further by suggesting that he killed her to protect them. >> she did everything that you can reasonably expect a mother to do. she took these kids camping. they went to yosemite, lake

tahoe, monterey, santa cruz. they went to the aquarium. they went to the explorer toium, birthday parties, sleepovers. she was supermom and at same time study ing to become a doctor. for mr. reiser to be dancing on her grave is pathetic. >> reiser is scheduled to give his closing arguments monday. the jury will deliberate how much money if any, they should award the children. the 12-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl live in russia with their maternal grandmother. also in the east bay, city leaders in oakland say they are going to try something new to control violent crime that has worked in los angeles. it's called, friday night in the park. this is the second time there's been a big party at elm hurst park. there was another celebration going on at gillmor park on 66th avenue. two parks are located in areas where killings and robberies are on the rise. mayor jean quan believes

gatherings like this fight crime. >> in neighborhoods where there's a lot of gangs, this kind of event by the end of the summer, you'll see, we have 100 parents here and this event brings a neighborhood together. >> the mayor says friday nights in the park will continue throughout the summer. the countdown is on to game day and cal's athletic director says memorial stadium will be ready for the season. the renovation project started two years ago. we are told that crews are working 12-hour days to make sure to complete the football stadium in time for the september first kick-off against nevada. landscaping and signage could be a work in progress but the goal to have seat, scoreboards, rest rooms and, of course, concessions ready to go. artificial turf and brand-new video screens scheduled to be installed early next month. in the south bay, a big swim competition just getting started. thousands of people are expected to show up at the santa clara

final bull run of pamplona's festival. two men suffered head injuries from falls. another runner bruised his shoulder. a fourth man injured his knee. a total of 38 thrill seekers including one american sent to the hospital during this year's festival. most of those injuries resulted from falls as people ran with half ton bulls during the narrow cobblestone streets. a shark killed a surfer near australia's wedge island this morning. local beaches closed after the fifth deadly shark attack in ten months. police are now searching for the man's remains. he was surfing more than 100 feet from the beach near wedge island, when that attack happened. a friend witnessed that horrifying attack and he said the shark came after him when he reached to grab his friend's body. >> i did another loop and when i came to get -- came back to the body, the shark took it and

good morning to you. looking live at san mateo bridge there. you can see a bit of blue, a bit of the water and of course the fog sitting right on top of the bay area today. we'll check with anthony in just a few minutes. now, a storm not the kind that goes in anthony's forecast. is it a solar storm. we'll get to that in a moment. but, first, we want to tell you about the fire that is burning in placerville this morning. it is a wildfire that is threatening at least 150 homes. governor jerry brown called for more firefighters to help battle those flames. the fire started on wednesday and has burned about two square miles. right now it's only 10% contained. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this is burning near the town of

forest hill, about 15 miles from auburn. now to that solar storm that could disrupt your weekend. the sun released a massive flare that is hurling a cloud of highly charged particles toward the earth at 3 million miles per hour. that ball of energy should be arriving right about today. scientists say it could be a minor event, but it will impact radio communication, gps signals, and could cause blackouts, as well. police living in canada and the northern u.s. may be able to see colorful auroras in the sky as well. now let's check in with anthony slaughter. >> you know this morning we are waking up to fog across the area. and it looks like the clouds are with us for the first half of the day. good morning, i'm anthony slaughter from the nbc bay area weather center. we are talking about temperatures that are very uniform this morning. it's 55 this morning up in the north bay. close to 55 in many locations this morning. 56 now in san francisco with a little drizzle.

head down to the south bay, we are starting to see clouds break up a bit. we're at 61 already in sunnyvale. starting to warm with the sunshine in place. but hey, if you live at coast today, bottom line, you're looking at foggy conditions. you can see, a still shot of our satellite image. look hard you can see the outline of the fog extending all the way from concord down towards gilroy and as we led through the day this fog will retreat out back into the open waters but again if you live in the coastal areas that's where you're dealing with fog all day long. now, at the coast this morning, we already had that fog and drizzle in place. as we head through the afternoon hours expect more passing clouds if you live inland. not a cloudy day by any means. if you do live at the coast, again, one of those days might be good to grab a book, stay inside. if you like the fog, head out to the giants game because they are playing around 6:05 this evening. cool onshore push will continue at least for another day or so. now that marine layer's very deep off the ocean. talking about foggy conditions again this morning that will

start to retreat back towards the coast. again from about bodega bay, half moon bay, looking at 50 and 60s for daytime highs. inland 70 and 80s. winds gusting quite a bit. we haven't talked a lot about the tropics but we have a hurricane out in the pacific. hurricane fabio with winds up to 90 miles per hour as of this morning. now, this thing's going to attack an interesting track. it's headed towards southern california. now when we get towards wednesday it's only a tropical depression with winds up to 30 miles per hour as it moves into cooler water. nonetheless, if this thing continues on the same track, we can be looking at a little moisture in our forecast as we head towards the next week. that will be something interesting to watch. as far as the forecast goes today, back to 79 in san jose. 73 santa cruz. with afternoon sunshine. same for the east bay. temperatures warmer here with 80 at livermore, 80 danville. 77 in concord. if you live in san francisco today, it's one of those days

good morning. looking live at sunol there in the distance. we see a bit of the yellow hillsides we're used to this time of year, and some of the fog we're not used to in around parts of the bay area that are not san francisco, of course. thank for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez with meteorologist anthony slaughter in for rob mayeda, who is off today. >> yes. he's been very busy this week, filling in for christina. here i am. so you know we are waking up to clouds. as you mentioned, kris, one of the most noticeable things in the forecast for this week how cool it's been. one specific location, altamont pass, yesterday 1:00 in the morning when bottom out for the low it was 76 degrees. this morning, 51. what a difference a day makes. talking 20 degrees cooler or more than that in some locations. it is definitely a change of season as you step out the door this morning. 55 in santa rosa. 55 napa. even livermore, 57. we are starting to see sun out in the south bay and even in the

peninsula in the east bay. starting to warm just a bit. 61 in sun vi venyvale. lower 80s from about gilroy towards evergreen. cooler as you head into the city of san jose. and even not bad across the east bay, talking about places that were in the triple digits back into the 70s and 80s today. temperatures across the board, more tolerable for this time of year. that's what we'll go with our forecast. bottom line, tollerable temperatures today. enjoy. >> thank you. an update on developing news we first told you about a half hour ago. firefighters now putting out hot spot at the scene of a lumber yard fire in the south bay. live pictures of crews working that scene right now. in the town of coyote which is south of san jose at monterey road near blanchard. the fire destroyed a processing building. then the fire spread to a nearby building before crews put it out. southbound monterey road is

"today in the bay"'s jean elle reports a crew of construction workers helped save one man from the flames.

>> it was -- it was tough. >> reporter: this man and his brothers jumped into action friday morning, working on a house on lake drive, they saw fire inside the house next door and a man trapped inside. >> we saw the house on fire and there was a guy at the window on the second floor, we gave him a ladder so he could get down. we started breaking windows. >> reporter: the construction workers got one man out safely. he urged them to save a baby trapped inside. >> told me there was a 2-year-old at the back room we ran towards the back of the house with the ladder, started breaking windows but couldn't get to him. it was too full of smoke. >> reporter: san bruno firefighters say the baby boy and his grandparents were trapped upstairs because the hallway escape was engulfed in flames. this man's 2-year-old cousin died in the fire. >> i loved that guy. i really loved him the. >> reporter: grandparents were

baby-sitting. they are both in the hospital, in critical conditioning, leaving the large, close-knit family devastated. >> i'm really sad. i'm just praying right now that my grandma and grandpa come back. i hope they make it. that's all i want right now. >> reporter: firefighters believe a candle started the fire in the hallway. that's where the family had a hindu shrine, with a single candle. the san bruno fire department has not officially determines the cause of the fire though investigators believe it was accidental. jean elle, "today in the bay." summertime heat bringing out rattlesnakes and with more snakes come more bites. the rattlers have bitten six people in the past three months in santa clara county compared to one bite last year when more rain produced more food for the snakes. this year's dry spring caused the snakes to search a little bit farther for food. experts say we are seeing them because we build and play where they live. >> some tall grass, i bet i landed ten feet away and my feet

never touched the ground. >> that was a man who was nearly bitten by a rattlesnake as a kid. rattlesnakes come out of hibernation in april. they attack when they are surprised or they have to defend themselves. devastation and grief for actor sylvester stallone after the sudden death of his son. sage stallone found unresponsive in his apartment in studio city near hollywood yesterday. the 36-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. prescription bottles were found in his apartment but the coroner is not saying whether they had a role in his death. no suicide note was found. an autopsy will be performed in the next few days. toxicology reports take much longer than that. sage stallone appeared alongside his father at age 14 in "rocky v." a disturbing prank, vandalism at a cemetery in union city. employees say they found 150 headstones covered in vegetable oil. this happened at chapel of the

an exception to the rule, hands-free texting received the okay from governor jerry brown. under the new law, drivers are allowed to dictate send and/or listen to text messages as they are using voice activated hands-free devices. the measure was introduced to extend the same hands-free exception to texting that already exists for using a cell phone while driving. the governor signed the bill into law yesterday. it goes into effect on january 1st. a bay area tech company's publicity stunt is drawing attention to the world of on

drifted all wait into the south and east bay with a deep marine layer into the san francisco area. in fact that cooling wind pushed into the east bay. one notable thing to mention, the altamont pass yesterday at this time, around the morning hours, basically in the 70s. this morning we're in the 50s. what a difference a day makes. we are looking at much cooler conditions across all of the bay area. in fact it's 55 in santa rosa. 56 san francisco. even at 57 in livermore. really, you can see as you take a look at satellite picture look hard here but you can see that low cloud deck that is extending from concord towards gilroy. east of concord and gilroy you see the sunshine first. then gradually work its way back to the coast so it's a slow process today. this morning, fog in place. this in afternoon a mix of sun and clouds depending where you're at the coast. more fog and clouds than anything. but the further inland you go, you will see more sunshine because of a trough of low pressure breaking through this

there's a heart-shaped miprror n the ceiling, bed, and the motel owner wanted to create a space where owners can bring dogs they know -- where they know they will be comfortable and looked after. so then why just one room? in the ukraine, a zoo is showing off a pair of recently-born white lion cubs. the rare genetic mutation that gives the white lions their color is very rare indeed. staff at zoo say they weren't expecting a white club from a normal colored lioness. the cubs are living in the zoo director's office playing with a white tiger cub born in may. much more ahead on "today in the bay." still to come, the celebration dedicated to french fries.
