"today in the bay." >> good morning everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a change in the weather could mean delays for travelers. fog thick over san francisco and causing problems for airlines. meteorologist christina loren in the weather center tracking where the fog is. first we check in with christie smith live at sfo this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. i can tell you it was a very foggy drive in to san francisco from the east bay this morning, but i just checked the arrival and departure board here at terminal 2 for sfo, and it look like it's not too bad so far. everything pretty much on time, leaving and coming. that's for now. general delays, though, of at least 15 minutes is what they are reporting on the faa website for sfo, also san jose and oakland this morning.

yesterday, though, quite a different story here at sfo where the fog and wind were quite a factor, up to three-hour delays for arrivals here. wind was also a factor with planes experiencing gate and taxi delays up to 45 minutes and more. i did speak with the airport duty manager here at sfo this morning and she said they should have a better picture in about 30 minutes when the airlines start reporting in to them. reporting live at sfo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> that fog jamming things up. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren to find out what it's going to do to our weather on this tuesday. >> good morning to you. you know what's interesting about the fog in the bay area this time of year, it gets to its most dense point between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00, so if we see delays they are more likely to occur between that time frame. throughout the morning you can see we have 10 miles visibility

or better but there is a storm system just to our north ushering in a strong onshore flow. we have a give and take situation. that system brought in the winds, those are relaxing but now with the winds relaxing the fog will settle in and get very, very dense. that marine layer is thickening up so we are expecting numerous delays. we'll update you. your futurecast tells the story. at 8:00 a.m., that's when the fog really starts to get thick especially marin county south to san francisco. we'll have your full forecast coming up. a heat wave on the way, guys. make sure you're ready. here's mike. >> another one. oh, man. we're looking here to 680 where there is a lot of activity. this is for overnight road work blocking all but one of the southbound lanes from bollinger canyon road to elcosta. the volume of traffic is light north of the dublin interchange, there is construction on the northbound side. the blip may be a crew just to

the south. we're looking at a live look, the bay bridge toll plaza, from san francisco you see a clear view but the glowing lights, there's a lot of moisture in the air and that fog will start to thicken up between 6:00 and 8:00 when we'll see it affecting the drive from marin county to the city and likely at the bay bridge as well. we'll let you know as it affects your drive. >> thank you, mike. one of google's top executives is yahoo!ing this morning. it is a huge change of course for marissa mayer who was just named yahoo!'s new ceo. the tech giant has been through five ceos in less than a year. the 37-year-old mayer has a tough task ahead as she tries to return yahoo! to its former glory. she had a 13-year run at google as one of the first 20 employees. she had an influence on some of the well known projects like gmail and google maps.

google promoted people over mayer despite her proven ability. some expert s say yahoo! sees what google can't. >> i think it's difficult for women to make themselves heard, that's comfortable for everybody around them to deal with. >> mayer joins the ranks of meg whitman and some of the most influential women in the tech industry. she followed u by tweeting, this is something to yahoo! about, she is pregnant with her first child. what a day for her. here is a look. she graduated from stanford. she oversaw the home page and served as the vp of search projects. she was vp of location services. she serves on the board of walmart, san francisco museum of modern art and the san francisco ballet. lots of reaction pouring in from top executives and tech fans. we'll have more what people are

saying coming up. >> a prominent lafayette couple is dead following a small plane crash in utah. local developer and director of california bank of commerce peter brana and his wife were flying a small plane to aspen when the couple crash ed near utah/colorado border. a private helicopter found the debris. the children released this statement. it reads in part they were a special presence with their compassion, joyfulness and generosity. the niece is nicole t olympic volley ballplayer who competed in beijing. the cause of the crash is under investigation. >> new this morning a mass shooting in toronto has killed two. police say a neighborhood party got out of hand and someone started firing a gun. an infant was among the injured but is expected to recover.

authorities say they have a person of interest in custody but believe more than one person was responsible for the gun fire. the police chief says it's the worst gun violence he has seen in that city. >> a former bay area political power couple are splitting up. state treasurer bill lockyer filed for divorce from his wife nadia. court papers state irreconcilable differences. their troubled marriage made headlines after nadia admitted to an affair and drug addiction. she resigned from the board of supervisors. >> there is one bay area city seeing break-ins, nearly 20 in palo alto in the past six weeks. the majority near the downtown area during daylight hours. investigators say burglars tend to slip through unlocked windows or open garage doors. police right now are reminding residents to lock it or lose it.

>> there are people out and some may attend school, and so they are out and about committing crime. the weather is nice. people are leaving things open and being targeted for it. >> police made several burglary arrests this week. >> one of the suspects in the sunny veil robbery likely knew the victim. police say one of the suspects, a woman, met a man on line and convinced him to invite her over to his house. when he gave up the address she brought along two men who robbed him. police arrested those two men after a three-hour manhunt. the woman is still on the loose. >> problem over. for the panda. pablo sandoval will not be charged with an alleged section assault. bob lee agreed with the investigation conducted by the sheriff's office saying it did not yield enough evidence for

charges. the third baseman was accused of assaulting a woman in the sea skate beach resort after a meeting at a club in santa cruz in late may. sandoval's attorney says it was the right play. >> right now we're pleased that the district attorney's office agreed with the sheriff that there was not enough evidence to move forward and the fact that pablo had not done anything wrong in this situation. >> sandoval was on the disabled list when the alleged assault occurred. >> as we've seen, the fog rolling in around the san francisco area let's check in with meteorologist christina loren to find out what kind of day we're looking at. is that fog going to blow out? >> it is. we're going to have to wait for it. the difference between yesterday and today, temperatures are going to be just about the same, about as cool as yesterday but we're not going to have the blustery wind conditions. that developed over the coastline yesterday. it was even breezy to windy in san jose. but they really gusted along the pacific coast.

as we head throughout the day temperatures are cool once again. we're expecting fog. the winds relaxed substantially. 10 miles visibility or better for now. things will change. we'll keep watching that golden gate bridge. today temperatures are going to stay cool as the layer settles in. by 9:00 it looks like it will be at its thickest. we're not talking about patches of fog. we're talking about one dense day. we're looking for flight delays though there are no flight delays to report at this point out of the major airports. 70 degrees at noon, 77 degrees at 4:00 p.m. the full forecast in moments. a heat wave on the seven-day. first here is mike. >> good morning folks. we'll take to you the peninsula where we're looking at a car that is stuck. disabled vehicle southbound 101 at university avenue. sticking out into the slow lane. a crew is arriving. they will move it but the flashing lights and the potential for a traffic break is there for the next few minutes.

southbound 101 south of that dumbarton bridge. also construction here, highway 85, between 101 and 237, down to two lanes, 237 show as blip in the eastbound direction around 101. that equipment moves through the area. southbound 880 between 237 and around montague there is construction. that new interchange. so they are building up the wall and there is construction closing one of the off ramps. no slowing for 880 through the area and the rest of the south bay, northbound route. live look outside shows you what things are like across the san mateo bridge and a clear view but we're watching for the fog to thicken up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> up next, yes, an age old tradition. politicians playing the blame game. that's right. this time on the state of the economy. what's happening today that could spur more finger pointing. >> plus, growing a business from

helping big money donors while ignoring the middle class. >> testimony from the fed chairman could set the tone for wall street. >> a lot of eyes watching that. for a check of the markets we turn it over to bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning guys. we've got the futures pointing towards a bounce back this morning, after setting a bit of a record, the dow is now ended in the red for the past seven mondays. the monday slump this summer. markets dropped yesterday on disappointing retail sale, also the imf cutting its global forecast growth forecast, asia and europe are higher today and we're going to be higher here as well. we're going to get data on consumer prices, industrial production and housing. we've gotten strong earnings this morning from coca-cola that was better than expected. also from goldman sachs as well so that is helping to boost the futures ahead of ben bernanke's

testimony set to start mid morning. the dow on its seventh straight down monday closed at 12,727, off 49 points t the nasdaq off 11 to 2896. microsoft is taking the office into the cloud, the company unveiled the latest version of office software. users can perform many chores via web browser instead of installing the program. office 2013 is built to work on any device, with key board, mouse, stylist or touch screen. a trial version is available now. microsoft making headlines again, now looking at whether or not it makes other browsers accessible. >> thanks for the update. >> right now a medical procedure that saved a dog from being poisoned by mushrooms may soon be tried on humans, this involves draining toxins from the gall gladder. a dog received this treatment

after eating deadly mushrooms and we can tell you it worked. this week a doctor and veterinarian announced they will recommend this on poisoned humans. >> good to know. unfortunately you see those stories once in a while. don't eat mushrooms out there. a foggy start. i love a cool bay area morning. >> don't you. you know what i mean. if you have kids at home with you for the summer it's been so mild. easy to get them outdoors. the heat makes everything a little bit more difficult getting into your car and driving to the store, for instance. today we are going to be spoiled again. the nation bakes with extreme heat. even the central portion of the united states really hot weather continues for today. for us, we're going to be just about as nice as yesterday. i've only taken the temperatures up a couple degrees. it wasn't that nice at the the coast with cloud cover, basically all day long. 4:48, a look at the golden gate bridge. you can see mostly clear now,

the fog is starting to settle in. you can see that on the visibility map we're starting to drop off in places like oakland add 5 miles. 10 miles or better just about everywhere else. 6:00 to 8:00 we expect the fog to be at its densist. here we go for today. area of low pressure is going to slide to the south. it kind of slows down, so what that means is we're also going to be cool for tomorrow, temperatures yet again in the 70s. we're expecting the 80s to return but because the system is stalling out, look likes we're going to stay cool. the on shore flow will continue so gray skies across the bay area. 77 degrees. in livermore with the natural cooling off of the pacific, 75 in fairfield. and then the heat returns. we lose that area of low pressure, it scoots off to the east as we head throughout thursday into friday and high pressure comes in strong. 95 by saturday, 94 on sunday so we're talking about almost a 20-degree jump over the course of 72 hours.

make sure you're ready for it and enjoy the cooler than average weather while it lasts. >> trying to think where i can escape. up and coming tech innovators found an unusual way to share ideas. they are living together in so called hacker hostiles, homes where tech developerses can work on projects together like a good old dorm room. some have started successful companies in their living rooms like this. some say it's 50 bucks a night to stay for a few weeks. >> not about the price so much, it's the risk. people come out and they have three months basically to make it or break it. and no one will offer you a three-month lease in your 20s. >> it's more popular as they try to keep the location under wraps. most are rented by word of mouth. >> still ahead, the commander in chief shows his romantic side. >> plus, no more easy cuts.

what a beautiful live look outside this morning. pretty clear because we've seen a lot of fog, that overhead thick layer as christina was describing it. we'll check the forecast coming up and when it's going to cool off, heat up as well. 4:53. >> csu's board says hey, it's run out of easy budget cuts so now they have to choose whether to raise tuition or reduce enrollment. voters reject a tax increase on the november ballot california schools and universities face $250 million in funding cuts. the board meeting today to discuss how they will deal with this. they are considering two options. one, raise tuition by 5% starting in january, or two, reduce enrollment by about 6,000 full-time students. >> california will be getting $50,000 to clean up debris left by the japanese tsunami. the federal government will give

$250,000 in grants to five states affected by last year's event. in addition to california, alaska, washington, oregon, and hawaii will each get up to $50,000 for debris removal. the japanese government estimates 1.5 million tons of debris still floating in the ocean after the tsunami. >> 4:55. i imagine that mike inouye, not exactly a tsunami on the roads. >> just a little bit, an ebb tide going on. even calmer for the peninsula because the disabled vehicle that was sticking out in the lanes is cleared from the area. south 101 at university. south of the dumbarton bridge. the dumbo has construction crews there eastbound blocking two lanes heading over to the fremont and newark side. no slowing, this is the tradition overnight. we'll take to you the east bay. look at this. we have slowing westbound 580, already kicking in. it's 4:55 so that's early to see

this slowdown just a tad bit of slowing about 50 miles per hour coming into livermore. also construction over on the left side of the screen. 680 both directions. with that slowing in livermore we'll check antioch. we have your construction closing the eastbound direction at love ridge. westbound right around l street we see speeds 50 at that one sensor, this could be an early start for 4 and 580. we'll track it but there could be a heavier flow already. >> president obama has been working hard on his re-election campaign. that doesn't mean he can't show his romantic side. >> up on kiss cam a moment ago. a presidential smooch. >> that's what we're talking about. nobody's safe from that kiss cam. a little sugar there. the president giving the first lady a smooch last night for all to see during that exhibition
