i wish i could tell you last night what happened when we got on. it was hard to find a seat because there are only so few air conditioned ones. a very nice gentleman very much into working on his computer. i sit down next to him. chrissy sits opposite him. for the most part we're just fine. all of a sudden a very lanky guy comes in, joins the group. that's when the games begin. and it turns out that the guy sitting next to me is from moscow and his name is miccal. we had so much fun. i was like this the whole way. it got crazy, but we made a date for tonight. we're all going to meet back on the bus. >> on the train? >> on the train. the train, the bus. hey, if i can have that much fun on a train, i can't wait to try the bus. i need to apologize to a certain miss aretha, apparently. >> well, let's talk about yesterday because yesterday you were trying -- we were talking about who was going to be the new judge on "american idol." aretha franklin said, why not me? you pointed out rightfully she doesn't like to fly so she takes

it's time for "today weighs in" when we get the answers about confusing and controversial topics of diet and fliegs and overall health. >> with us is madelyn fernstrom. sara is at the nbc experience store to round up some questions. what have you got, sara? >> our first question is from a dad/daughter combo. first question from dad. >> i've been trying to lose weight forever. i know what i can't do, i know what i can't eat, but i don't have the motivation. where do you get motivation? >> the biggest thing with motivation, it's hard to lose weight or even stay on track. but we think about losing weight. that's not the action verb. action verb is small steps changing your eating, small steps in physical activity and

having the mindset that small achievements really count. i ate one more fruit today than yesterday. that's huge. i walked 30 minutes all week. we don't think they're a big deal, but these baby steps add up every day to help keep you motivated. you need support from others. that's important, too. >> you told us years ago if you just cut out 100 calories a day, you will have lost 10 pounds in a year. pf that is exactly right. >> anybody can cut out 100 calories. >> and that's a real achievement. but we set our goals so high we don't think they're achieving anything. but saving 100 calories a day, walking 20 minutes a day, that's great. >> let's talk about walking. is walking briskly for 30

minutes a day really good exercise? does it count. >> it does count. the key here is briskly. it's not the 30 minutes but going along at a moderate pace, getting your heart rate up. we think of exercise running to the gym, sweating. that's one type of exercise. again, this moderate, daily walk, that's going to be 30 minutes will be close to 150 calories you're burning every day. that is close to 15 pounds a year. do you count a brisk walk as exercise? >> i always do. i count taking stairs instead of the escalator. >> that's right. >> i think the hard part for this gentleman about the motivation, if you can lose that first five pounds, that's what ends up motivating you and you start to feel better. >> if you get on the scale and you don't gain, that's also good. not gaining. hoda is making a face. >> but at a certain age it seems if you just stay doing the same you've always done, you will gain. >> and if you just don't gain when it's easy to naturally have that happen, that is a plus. so you want to set realistic expectations. losing is always great, but sometimes staying the same can be a real accomplishment. that's a lot of work. >> next we have michelle from phoenix. >> hi. my question is, i'm a teacher and on my feet all day long involvement times about midway through the day i need a little

extra pick-me-up. i don't want chocolate. i don't want something sweet, but something that will give me energy. what would you suggest? >> that's a good question. >> these pick-me-ups, sometimes people need them in the afternoon, sometimes in the morning. you want something around 200 calories. it can be a greek yogurt, a handful of nuts and raisins, banana, piece of fruit. all these things. you want to have a little natural sugar, like some fruit or dried fruit, because that will give you a quick pick-me-up, but you want a protein/fat combo that will give you some energy. >> how about energy bars? you have to look at the calories. >> you do. and for a snack, you want something around 100 calories. what do you do? >> sometimes if it's all that's around. sometimes yogurt. >> i eat sweets all the time. >> jessica asks this question, which condiment should we absolutely stay away from that adds belly fat, ketchup, cheese, mayo, hot sauce, ranch dressing? which do you need to stay away

forecast. the best time for storms today is later in the afternoon throughout the southeast, we'll see pop-up storms once again. throughout parts of the northeast, we'll see these storms developing throughout the day and into the afternoon, but it's stilt going to be very, very hot for a huge portion of the country. washington, d.c., once again back up to the triple digits, still hot for you in new york but it will be those storms that will signal a change. cooler air moving in after those storms get through. afternoon storms in new york and still here we are under that serious drought disaster throughout a huge portion of the colonel bel corn belt, breadbasket. temperatures into the 90s and triple digits, not helping things at all. the storms are moving to the south, the ones in the northeast. southeastern storms again, still the pop jum variety on thursday. still seeing these ridiculous temperature readings in the afternoon. billings, montana, 100 degrees,
