it's thursday, july 19th, this is "today in the bay." >> good thursday morning. it's about 4:31 on the nose. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. friday eve, at this point you're starting to think about the weekend and the weather is warming as we head into the all important weekend. this morning temperatures crisp to start but we're adding 5 to 8 degrees to your high from yesterday, meaning a warmer afternoon, improving conditions at the coast today. and we've got big time changes ahead. we'll take you through those. first, get you out the door on time here's mike. >> nothing much holding you up. the caldecott tunnel on the map, just before you get there westbound 24 at fish ranch we have overnight construction. the crews should be clearing in the next 20 minutes.

bottom of the screen you see a couple of zones for construction. basically, between about fruitvale and 980 you'll find a lane or two blocked. i'm vague because that's what we have, that's from caltrans. a live look shows you the volume past the coliseum is not really a problem. an easy drive of 880 northbound with the taillights, a smooth flow and really, that is not an issue through the construction zone. we'll watch the bright lights might be an issue. >> a woman trying to send a message by standing by her man. >> the wife of suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is back to take the stand in her husband's defense. christie smith is live in san francisco with the latest twist in the case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ileana lopez didn't start testifying until last night and she only went on for about 30 minutes. she is going to start later today at 5:00. it was the first time she and ross mirkarimi had been in the

same room together in public for months. there is still a stay away order in effect as mirkarimi fights to keep his job as san francisco sheriff. we heard from lopez's neighbor in declarations saying that mirkarimi grabbed her arm 18 fight on new year's eve day. lopez says mirkarimi did grab her arm and leave a bruise. she showed videotape of that arm that was shot by neighbor ivory madison. she also said to the commission that this whole fight was not a very explosive fight. >> he say -- i just one thing was the only thing he said. and i said don't talk to me that way. >> lopez said that she asked madison about custody laws and madison actually scared her with what she said. she said that she told lopez that if she divorced him that

she would probably lose custody of their son because he was sheriff. san francisco mayor ed lee charged mirkarimi with official misconduct after he pleaded guilty misdemeanor false imprisonment in connection with that altercation, the commission is going to do is will make a recommendation on mirkarimi's fate to the board of supervisors who will decide whether or not he can keep his job. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> and for video you can head to nbcbayarea.com and just search mirkarimi. >> homeless campers living in a bay area park are on notice to leave today or face possible jail time. more than a dozen people who set up camp at san jose's kelly park have been warned throughout the week that cleanup is in response to several grass fires at the park earlier this month. they may have been started by the homeless camps. the city says the cleanup is part of a larger effort to deal

with environmental concerns. >> it's really a tough problem because we have to make sure we have concerns of visitors and neighbors and deal with the human issues of the people living at the camp. >> the city is offering temporary housing assistance to the campers, cleanup is scheduled to start this morning at 9:00 a.m. >> 4:35. family members will say good-bye to a 2-year-old boy and his grandmother after they were killed in a house fire a. memorial service for the two will be held today in millbrae. fire trapped the two in a back bedroom in the san bruno home. construction workers managed to pull the boy's grandfather to safety. both will be buried tomorrow. >> police are look for four

suspects wanted in the botched jewelry store robbery. an arrest warrant has been issued for michael porter of hayward. investigators say the 20-year-old took part in the attempted robbery at the golden treasures store on may 30. porter and three other accomplices were confronted by an arms store owner. police arrested two after they attempted to flee. >> a 1-year-old girl is hospitalized after she, her mother and brother were hit by a car in fremont. this started when two drivers got into an argument and started racing their cars. one of the drivers sped through the intersection. his car jumped the curb where the mother and children were standing. witnesses say it was a horrible sight seeing the baby stroller crushed. the mom and her 3-year-old son, they were released from the hospital. the little girl was kept for observation. police say the 21-year-old driver will likely face charges

for reckless driving. >> a story you will only see on nbc bay area, bay area deputy called a hero for saving a baby. sergeant al alvy got a call of a 1-year-old not breathing. antonio had gone into a seizure during a barbecue in his home. he flipped the boy on his stomach and began hitting him on his back. antonio started breathing again. his parents say he's a hero. >> i don't consider myself a hero, doing what i'm trained to do. >> translator: he saved my son's life. and i thank him for that. >> sunday was also alvy's 43rd birthday. >> gifts all around on that. college football season is weeks away and one bay area university

almost ready to debut its renovated stadium. remodeling at uc-berkeley's stadium about 90% complete. $320 million has been spent to modernize the aging structure. they worked hard to try and maintain some of the old charm. >> i hope longtime fans, students, alumni, are going to say it looks like the old stadium, the historic facade, the shape of the bowl t coloring of the bowl. >> maintain that integrity. cals' director says it should be complete by the first home game but they are cutting it close. >> it's right there on a fault line. it was classic. it will be nice to see. >> i'm ready for college football. >> when are you is not we're ready for i guess a warmer day today. >> yeah, all the wivs are really excited about that football

season as well. good morning to you. we've had fall-like weather around here. we're going to get a taste of sumter next few days. particularly this weekend. today, the warm-up starts to kick in, in your east bay communities, on the south bay as well. you'll also see improving conditions at the coast, not as great, the sunshine will come out earlier and your temperatures warmer. by this weekend, we're talking about mostly clear conditions. a thick round of fog to get through. that's going to be the case was we head through 7:00 to 9:00 when we'll see the densest fog. as we head through noon, we'll have sunshine over san francisco all the way up through marin county. something that hasn't happened all week just yet. so sunshine at noon at the coast. 74 in fremont, 77 degrees in los gatos. we get hot inland by this weekend i'll take you through your seven-day to my next report. let's check on the drive.

here is our highway man. >> good morning. a couple of the interstates, major highways at the dublin interchange and 680 north thereof has the construction. between and no slowing in either direction. the northbound side is down three lanes the zone is wide across the freeway. no slowing there. that's good news. an easy flow for 680 through the san ramon valley. antioch, no construction, not registered this morning. a lot of slowing through concord over the last ten minutes. we'll track that because both directions show speeds in the 40s suddenly. i want to know what's going on. across the san mateo bridge, no problems, all lanes open. just like yesterday, one of your eastbound lanes closing at 6:00 a.m. one of the westbound at 11:00 a.m. yesterday did not present a big

>> welcome back everybody. on a thursday morning, that is a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza. wouldn't it be nice if traffic was smooth like this all day long. mike will fill you in on the trachk. >> george zimmerman is breaking his silence this morning we're learning more about the night he shot and killed florida teenager trayvon martin. zimmerman spoke publicly for the first time on an interview on fox news channel.

he says trayvon martin initiated the confrontation. >> started bashing my head into the concrete sidewalk. i was -- as soon as he broke my nose i started yelling for help. >> zimmerman said during the fight both he and martin reached for the gun strapped to zimmerman's waist, a gun he fired once killing the teen. he said he did not regret following martin but wished he did not have to use his gun. martin's parents were quick to release a statement. it will be leave on the "today" show. you can hear from them at 7:00. >> corporate earnings driving the markets this week, and for that and more on the rest of the news before the bell we turn it over to the woman in the know, bertha coombs. good morning. >> good morning, guys. the futures right now are looking three straight days of

positive momentum in the markets, earnings have helped and tech giants like ibm and ebay with positive outlooks to continue that momentum. investors reacted to intel's not so bad results and more comments from ben bernanke about the economy and possible future stimulus efforts. today we'll get data on weekly unemployment claims, also housing, the third piece of housing data so far, two out of three have been good. and manufacturing as well. we're watching earnings from morgan stanley, verizon looks in line with expectations. the dow rising 103 to about the temperature on wall street to 12,908. the nasdaq up to 2942. wonder what is in capital one's wa threat this morning it's less cash. the credit card issuer is going to pay $210 2 te$210 million.

the penalty was levee d. capital one will pay $60 million in fine and refund $150 million to more than 2 million customers. and the calendar may say july but some parents are thinking about packing their kids off to school. the national retail federation expects spending to rise 14%. parents will spend an average of $688. back to school is the second biggest u.s. shopping season after the holidays, spending tends to hold up well in tough times as many warrants want their kids to have new clothes and supplies on the first day. i was always very keen on having a great first day of school outfit and wanted something. i would insist on like i remember one year it was a jump suit. like too hot. no. and i died but i was stylish.

gate bridge, about 8:00 it's socked in. 56 degrees to start you out, in livermore 59 in san jose with plenty of low cloud cover filling in not just the santa clara valley but the try valley, 57 in san francisco also mostly cloudy expecting flight delays, probably won't last as long. we had flight delays because of the low ceilings. today the fog is going to clear earlier. by noon even at the coast, high pressure is moving in. tracking toward the coastline so a little bit of fog. 50s and 60s at the coast. we're going to get the 70s and the 80s. so arm inland today. may be too warm for a jog in livermore, danville, you know, the hot areas, concord throughout this afternoon. 4:00, the hottest point of the day so keep that in mind. in san jose it's 78, not too shabby. 91 inland. we'll see mid-90s saturday and sunday. things start to change and you

with her husband and two kids. it is her commitment to her family that made her hesitate when offered the job of a lifetime. >> initially the phone call came and i didn't accept right away. >> as chief medical officer in beijing she knew the demands of this job but once her family gave their blessing she accepted. >> we volunteer our time and we give our time and it's almost like we've been training for this. we do what you love, you love it. >> dr. change will over see 80 providing fair for more than 500 athletes including dozens of current and former cal athletes, many of whom she's treated. >> i don't want to see you when you're injured or hurt but come by and say hello. >> at the elite level, dr. change is ready for the challenge. >> at the olympic level the pressure is on to get them back.

>> who says there isn't affordable housing in the bay area. >> check this out. talk about a deal. two homes both being sold for $1 each. that's in downtown berkeley. yeah, i said it, one buck to buy these homes. of course there is a catch. isn't that always. the houses were built in 1905 on the site of a proposed development. as part of the review process the developers required to try and sell those properties before demolishing them. the buyer who paid that $1 must pay for the homes to be uprooted, moved and taken to another location, do it by next year. >> interesting to see. i would imagine they would be snatched up. >> $1.
