shrouding the golden gate bridge. it's thursday, july 19th, this is "today in the bay." good morning everybody. it's just after 6:00. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning only on nbc, the family of trayvon martin is speaking out about last night's controversial george zimmerman interview with fox news's sean hannity. marla tellez joins us with a today show preview. >> just hours after george zimmerman broke his silence trayvon martin's parents are reacting, zimmerman telling hannity he did nothing wrong the night he shot and killed martin and he showed little remorse. out of the entire interview zimmerman making one comment that is driving all of the attention. >> i feel it was all in god's plan and for me to second-guess it, judge it.

>> when asked if he had regrets or would do anything differently the night of february 26, zimmerman replied, quote, no, sir, he did, however, say he was sorry martin's parents had to bury a child and he prays for them daily. only on "today" martin's parents are reacting to zimmerman's comments that it was all god's plan. >> i really think that's ridiculous. i wish trayvon was here to tell his side of the story and i don't believe that is god's plan for him to kill an innocent teenager. >> zimmerman claims that martin bashed his head in the concrete and broke his nose and he says he shot the unarmed teenager out of self defense. zimmerman says america has rushed to judge him when asked about that comment, martin's father telling matt lauer, zimmerman rushed to judge his son. >> thanks so much. and of course you can hear more of what trayvon martin's parents

have to say on the "today" show starting at 7:00 a.m. >> she will be back on the stand later on today. eliana lopez defending her husband while testifying before the ethics commission. this is video from the start of her 40 minutes of testimony last night. today she will be supporting efforts to return ross mirkarimi to his job as san francisco sheriff. christie smith is live at city hall now with why today is such a very important day of testimony. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. everyone has been waiting to hear what she has to say. ileana lopez got a late start. she had a lot to say about this altercation between she and her husband that has rocked his career. we also heard from neighbors and declarations that lopez said that ross mirkarimi was yelling at her and grabbed her arm during that fight. but she told the commission that

it wasn't a very explosive fight, that he used profanity once and she said don't talk to me like that. lopez said that the embattled sheriff did grab her arm and leave a bruise that she videotaped with neighbor ivory madison. she says that she asked her about custody laws and madison told her if the couple did divorce she might lose custody of their young son. >> after our conversation she made me feel even more scared because she also said as the sheriff this is an all she used the word old boys network and they will you know, cover each other and so you have to make an evidence. >> reporter: lopez said the couple has talked about divorce but they haven't reached a decision. mayor ed lee charged mirkarimi with official misconduct after

that altercation with his wife and the commission will make a recommendation to the board of supervisors about whether or not mirkarimi will be allowed to keep his job. eliana lopez will continue tonight. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> more detail, a time line about the events leading up to today's ethics hearing against mirkarimi. this argument with his wife happened new year's eve. mirkarimi was then sworn in as sheriff january 8. five days later he was charged with three criminal counts. then march 12 he reached a plea deal, pleading guilty misdemeanor false imprisonment. on march 21st, san francisco mayor ed lee stepped in to suspend mirkarimi, leading to this ethics hearing which will help decide if in fact he will get his job back. of course we'll be at today's testimony when it continues at 5:00 this afternoon and coming up later on, we'll be joined by our legal expert steven clark

who will weigh in on lopez's testimony and how this may help or hurt her husband's case. >> a road rage crash could lead to charges for a man whose car struck a mother and her two children. it happened 11:00 yesterday morning. two drivers got into a fight, then started racing. one of the drivers accelerated right through the intersection and the car jumped the curb, slamming into the mother and kids. witnesses say the baby's stroller was crushed. the mother and her son have been released from the hospital. the girl was kept for observation. the driver of the speeding car has been identified as 21-year-old joseph onsorry. he will likely face charges for reckless driving. >> san ramon police say they are searching for a fourth person in a deadly botched jewelry store

robbery. an arrest warrant for michael porter of hayward. police say he and three others tried to hold up the golden treasures store. the owner ultimately shot and killed one of the suspects. two others were caught but porter remains on the loose. >> a crime caught on camera has police asking for your help. belmont police say the man stole jewelry and electronics from a home on sixth avenue and belmont yesterday. this is video of the suspect captured on a neighbor's security camera. you saw him pull up, then returns with a suit case in tow. investigators say he drives a blue or green two-door mercedes with large chrome rims. anybody with information is asked to call police. >> concern is growing for a missing silicon valley man who may be carrying handgun. we have a picture of macarthur uwho left for lunch last thursday, he has been missing ever since. he is a french citizen who is now living in the u.s.

he has no known medical conditions, but his passport is missing. he may be in possession of a glock 9 millimeter handgun. anybody with information should call the santa clara police department. >> the fog will roll into brentwood tonight but we're not talking about the weather. contra costa county will spray for mosquitoes to try to prevent the spread of the west nile virus. the trucks will roll tonight. the county says four birds infected with the virus have been found in neighboring pleasant hill. no one has been affected this year but you should certainly check your property for standing water where mosquitoes often like to hatch. >> important and wise information to have. let's check outside now, it's thursday, meteorologist christina loren will tell us, looks like it gets warm again.

"mad men" getting nominations including best drama and best actor for jon hamm. modern family among the nominees for best comedy. >> police start clearing out homeless people who have been living near a park. bob redell is live at kelly park with an update on this morning's eviction process. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. the city of san jose has been clearing out homeless encampments all summer. the cleanup is in about a few hours along kelly park. it shouldn't come as a surprise. people camping here because they have been warning, the police have, been warning all week. to people who live around the area are particularly happy about this removal because of the recent grass fires here at

the park, the recent was last week. the fire department hasn't figured out who started them but it could have been the homeless people who live here. this is not just a safety issue t the city and the water district have environmental concerns. they want to make sure the area is clean as you can imagine when you have people living in the woods it can get messy. these have been known to produce tons of trash. and the most important reason for doing this, to help these people to connect them with services, try to find them a way out of their situation on the street. the city will be offering temporary housing to anybody that they find out here this morning who needs it. again, this is the fourth cleanup of this summer since the end of may. this is another one, a fifth scheduled in a few weeks. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> san francisco's chinatown neighborhood association is suing california over the

statewide ban on shark fin sales. it says the law discriminates against chinese people who use the fin for cultural practices. backers of the measure say it will save the lives of millions of sharks who are being hunted only for their fins. >> college football season is just weeks away. one university is almost ready to debut its stadium. the memorial stadium is about 90% complete. $320 million has been spent to modernize the aging structure, new seats, restrooms, have all been solved. they worked hard to maintain some of the old charm. >> i hope long time fans, students, alumni, are going to say it looks like the old stadium. the historic facade, the shape of the bowl, the coloring of the bowl. >> that's the way they make everybody happy. cal's athletic director says work should be complete by the first home game of the season. but it's going to be close.

alcatraz island, you can still see both but you can see the clouds are lowering quickly. visibility is going to drop off more between the hours of 7:00 and 8:00, then we'll see the marine layer push out to sea. we have a good looking day shaping up and this is a spectacular shot. great looking day. for getting out for the commute, beautiful, 57 degrees, in places like san jose. we've stopped the clock at 11:00, mostly cloudy along the coast, getting a lot of clearing over the greater bay area so about two hours earlier than yesterday. lots more sunshine especially at the coast. the next 48 hours. moves in, set up offshore so today about 5 to 8 ges. warmer than where we were yesterday. the 90s return. we get close to triple digits saturday and sunday so. a rapid warm-up in store. 78 degrees, 69 in santa cruz.

68 in san francisco. your seven-day outlook tells the story. great looking weekend and we're so close to it. here's the deal. if it's too hot for you inland head toward the water where it will be 10 degrees cooler. if that's too warm, head to the coast. here is mike. >> plenty of options, probably plenty driving as well. antioch has the worst speed, the 20s but that's condensed. 580 is spread throughout. the altamont pass and the tri-valley. 21 minutes from 205 over to 680. so westbound 580 moves smooth to dublin. a little better as far as the castro valley. a typical pattern exexpect slowing. we saw congestion 101 at 680 to 87 and we're going to end with this map showing the 50s like we

talked about. >> thanks, mike. a strange verdict in the continuing battle between two tech giants. british judge says samsung did not copy apple's ipad and scott mcgrew says he wants everyone to know about it. the judge looked at apple ipad and the samsung, samsung didn't copy. that's the ipad on the right. the sam sung on the left. you may have arrive it at a different decision than the judge did but the judge ruled there was sufficiently different that apple is not only wrong in its accusations it has to take out advertisements saying it's wrong and put that on its home page for 6 months as well. apple says it will appeal the decision. apple and samsung are fighting all over the world. a san jose judge said leave steve jobs out of it. sam sung wanted to introduce statements by jobs about how much he hated the android

system. judge lucy said this not a trial about steve jobs. ebay's paypal unit did well. we expected that. the company says sales jumped 15%. i didn't say auctions, a majority of expressway sales are for new items sold at a fixed price. the talks between viacom and directv calmed down. it's been more than a week. there is a fight over how much they should pay. the real issue is yilions of tv customers finding other ways to watch. >> got my gabbone. >> we are well aware. got her on the itoday. >> there is much more ahead on tob including hanging on. >> isn't this amazing.

at the bay bridge. gray shot. we've got the low hanging clouds. a little fog there but we'll have sunshine later on as the day progresses. it's 6:24. right now an interesting story out of ohio, a father coming under fire for putting the brakes on his daughter's dream trip to disney. >> see what you think. william may refused to sign off on the vacation that his 4-year-old received as a donation from the make-a-wish foundation. she has battled leukemia. she underwent her last cancer treatment. the 4-year-old's mother supports the trip but her father feels that children who are cured shouldn't receive donations from the foundation. mckenna's mom has placed donation jars around bowling green inviting anybody to help her make the trip to disney world. >> four years battling this.

altercation that literally rocked her husband's career as san francisco sheriff. but we also heard from neighbors of lopez that said that mirkarimi was yelling at her and violently grabbed her arm. she videotaped the bruise on her arm with her neighbor. despite what the neighbor said, she told the commission that the fight wasn't very explosive and she stood her ground. >> just one thing was the only thing he said. and i said don't talk to me that way. >> reporter: lopez says that she asked madison about custody laws and the answer scared her, that madison told her that if she divorced ross mirkarimi she would probably lose custody of her young son because he was the safe. they have to sort this out and

make a recommendation to the board on whether or not ross mirkarimi should keep his job. lopez will continue at 5:00. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:31. let's take a closer look at what lopez's testimony could mean for ross mirkarimi's future. joining us our legal analyst steven mark. we've all been waiting for this testimony. >> she needs to counteract what was on the videotape which was devastating against the sheriff. she needs to put that in context which this commission can understand. yes, we had an argument, he did grab me. it's not what everyone is trying to make it out to be. that's critical for her. this is now a political process, this is no longer a courtroom, and her testimony could change the tide of public opinion against the sheriff and may go a long way to getting him his job

back. >> what she says could help or further him. >> if he tries to hard to help him it will come across as contrived. if she tells it like it is, stays on message, i can stand up for myself. he made a mistake. we're back on track. that's going to go a long way. the danger is ross mirkarimi admitted, he pled guilty to it. the key is this dissuading witnesses and obstruction of justice information. she needs to steer clear of that. >> what about her attorney? how is she preparing for today? >> absolutely. paula is a great attorney, very familiar with these types of cases. she needs to stress to eliana to stay on message. it's important to be honest and consistent. iffy is comes across he is helping too much or is inconsistent with something she said or her e-mails then the

cloudy. take you outside, show you what it looks hike from san francisco to jose. about an hour and a half ago we could see the top of the bridge. at this point the bank of clouds is lowering as we speak. it's going to be the midwest dense between 7:00 and 8:00, then we'll see the sun come out and you're actually seeing that in san jose. you have all of these cloud cover but you start to see the sunshine. we've bat all of this. we'll see the clearing in san jose. about two hours earlier than yesterday which means a warmer afternoon. 56 in sunnyvale. high pressure moves in. kicks the area of low pressure out of the area. and this is going to start the warming trend that kicks into high gear as we head into the weekend. if you want to make outdoor plans, you're going to get the

most comfortable temperatures bay side or at the coast. we've been enjoying the 70s inland and we'll get 70s again today and forecasting 78 degrees. about 78 in wine country. comfortable conditions today. in santa rosa, hot by friday t 90s return, then saturday into sunday, mid 90s. staying hot. monsoonal moisture. we could get hot showers so that's the next weather event we're watching for. feeling more hike summer. let's see how we're feeling on the roads. >> an accident could be a problem. northbound 101 at san bruno avenue an accident in your second lane from the left. no injuries reported so they should clear that quickly and
