pacific time zone. i'm lynn berry, and today we begin with breaking news. we're learning more about a mass shooting at midnight screening at "the dark knight rises" in and you rue regaaurora on the o of denver. 14 people are dead, dozens more were injured when a gunman opened fire it at the century 16 movie theaters at the aurora town center. dozens of police and ambulance rushed to the scene. victims were being transported to three local hospitals where patients' injuries range from moderate to severe. one person half been arrested, a 24-year-old man. police say there is no evidence of any additional shooters. officers found the gunman near a car behind the theater along with gas mask, rifle, handgun and at least one additional

weapon. according to police, the suspect spoke of possible explosives in his residence. the gunman kicked in the emergency door, throuew in a sme bomb and started shooting randomly. tear gas filled the theater after the assailant opened fire. one witness added the bullets passed from one theater into an adjoining one. apparently thought the gunshots were part of the movie. they heard what they thought were fire crackerses and then they saw the bullets flying. police are said to be viewing hundreds of potential witness and there was no immediate word of any motive. a horrific scene there. an unsettling new forecast from the national weather service predicts a historic drought will likely continue

into the fall. that is bad news for food prices down the road, but as nbc's chris clackum reports, there may be a silver lining right now. >> reporter: contrary to what you may think or may have been told, it may be months before the worst drought in 50 years drives up food prices. in fact, meat prices are headed down. >> we would anticipate in the short term actually food prices for beef, poultry, pork may go down a bit. >> reporter: there's a lot of livestock being rushed to market because there's not enough corn or feed for them to eat, which means meat prices may eventually go up, just not right now. >> this beef today may be $4 a pound. it could easily be $5 or $6 a pound a year from now. >> reporter: however u.s. agriculture secretary tom vilsack is warning consumers about short-term gouging on grocery items. >> and we want to make sure people understand that now's not the time they should see higher food costs. if you're going to see higher

food costs, you would likely see them in the later part of the year or first part of next year. >> reporter: he said in no way, shape, or form are increased food prices related to the drought and if a retailer says otherwise, he should be reported. chris clackum, nbc news. investigators in bulgaria is still trying to determine who was behind wednesday's deadly suicide bombing that kill the six israelis. airport surveillance video shows the man they believe triggered the blast near the bus full of israeli tourists. the video shows a long-haired man wearing bermuda shorts and a bulky backpack mulling around the airport. the bomber was carrying a fake american i.d. israeli leader benjamin netanyahu is blaming iran and the shiite militant group hezbollah for the attack and says it's part of a global campaign of terror, a charge iran calls baseless. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in mississippi other drivers

could only watch in horror as someone started driving into oncoming traffic along a stretch of highway. and this was the result. you can see right there that the result was a head-on collision with an suv. witnesses say the driver had been going the wrong way for miles until finally crashing. amazingly no one was killed. in utah, double trouble for police after a pair of suspects busted out of custody. first a man kicked out the window of a patrol car right behind the police station, and then moments later a woman who was his alleged accomplice managed to slip out of a holding cell. she actually ran right by a police officer busy trying to find the first escapee. the woman was recaptured. the man is still on the loose. and, finally, in michigan, now's your chance to own scar face or at least his ride. legendary mob boss al capone's cadillac is up for auction. it's one of the first bulletproof cars ever made with

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. we're continuing to follow that breaking news coming out of colorado. there has been a mass shooting at a midnight screening of the dark rises premiere in aurora, a suburb of denver. the police chief confirmed at least 14 people are now dead and dozens more injured. police have arrested a 24-year-old man who they found with weapons and a gas mask in a car behind the theater. police say there is no evidence of additional shooters. president obama released a statement saying he is shocked and saddened by the shooting.

the united nations, russia and china vetoed a security council resolution that would have attempted to force syria to end its civil war. meanwhile the estimated 310 killed across the country made it the single deadliest day of fighting si violence since the beginning of the revolt. defense secretary leon panetta has ordered pentagon officials to begin monitoring major u.s. news media for disclosures of classified information in an effort to stop the release of government secrets, this after a series of high-profile leaks. well, kate, the duchess of cambridge, got a special preview of a new exhibit of english athletes at london's national portrait gallery. she wore a dress by stella mccartney and an olympic rings-themed gold necklace. and a very modern looking linen bra dating back 600 years discovered in a medieval castle in austria is the world's oldest. it was a surprise to fashion

historians who had thought such lingerie dated back only about 100 years. well, now here's an early look at how wall street's going to kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,943 after adding 34 points yesterday. the s&p was up 3. the nasdaq rose 23. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei sank 125 points, but in hong kong the hang seng gained 81. well, earnings pushed stocks higher thursday, and after the bell the upward trend continued. google shares rose in late trade, thanks to a 42% surge in ad clicks, which outweighed a drop in the ad prices. microsoft rose in late trade after strong corporate software sales offset its first ever quarterly loss. earlier a positive fourth quarter forecast boosted semiconductor maker qualcomm. ibm drove down industrials higher a day after raising its full year profit forecast. ebay also shot up on stronger than expect earnings. walgreens soared after

settling a drawn out pharmacy network deal with express scripts, but it wasn't all good news. morgan stanley delivered an unexpectedly soft report while a rise in weekly jobless claims added to weak manufacturing and housing data. ford is telling owners of its brand-new 2013 escape with 1.6 engines to stop driving them. the suvs are being recalled for possible fuel line leaks that could cause a fire. documents show new yahoo! ceo marissa mayer will receive up to $100 million in total compensation over the next five years. a startling new government study finds students borrowed far more than they could afford from 2004 to 2008 because of relaxed standards by private lenders, much in the same way the risky lending led to 2008's subprime mortgage meltdown. and, finally, one french realtor has found a creative way around the weak economy.

well, one city park in belgium has a very creative way to take on loitering. loudspeakers have been installed to broadcast classical music. city officials believe the music will deter teenagers and prowlers from hanging around. and while some teens call the music boring others are going to come to park every day simply because it was playing music. maybe not such a good idea. in china teens are showing off their skills at one event at the robotic competition. the kids are trying out their designs in various ways. the highlight, robot soccer games played on a podium the size of a ping-pong table. a mini soccer ball sends out flashes of infrared light traced by robots which execute pre-programmed game procedures based on the ball's movement.
