we're also learning of connections. a heavily armed and heavily protected suspect entered the screening of "the dark knight", making it an absolute nightmare. leanne gregg is outside with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of unanswered questions. the bomb squads are back at the department of the suspects this morning, trying to determine whether to dismantle or explode what they believe are explosive devices inside the apartment. they have to be careful. they don't want to damage the evidence useful to the case. they are still stunned about what happened inside the crowded theater. mowners gathered at vigils not far from the crime scene trying to make sense of one of the worst shooting rampages in u.s. history. 24-year-old james holmes kicked open the theater's back door,

tossed in smoke devices and came in shooting. he was dressed in black, wearing a gas mask, armed with four guns. ten were killed at the scene. two died later. steven burton is among the 58 injured. >> at the time i thought it was still fireworks. then i got hit and i realized it was something much more serious. people started creaming. there was a lot of chaos. >> at that moment i just remember thinking i'm not going to die in here. me and my kids are not going to die in here. i need to get out. all i could think is if i stand up he's going to shoot. i was trying to think. >> a few miles away, the suspect's apartment described by aurora officials as extensively booby trapped continues to be a focus of the investigation. with help of a robot, officials are working on a plan to disarm what appears to be bottles

connected to wires. colorado's governor is among those struggling to understand why this happened. >> the whole country recognizes that this is something we don't accept, we can't explain at this point. but we're not going to let it happen to us. we're going to push back. >> a community in mourning as the investigation enters another day. and more vigils are scheduled for tomorrow. one hour from now the crime case is expected to come down, surrounding the parking lot outside the theater. people will be allowed to retrieve their vehicles. two hours for now the mall is going to reopen. i'm leanne gregg, back to you. one of the victims recently graduated from the university of pacific instockton. 22-year-old petra anderson studded music at up.

she underwent surgery and is expected to recover well. james holmes grew up in san diego, attended uc riverside and has family in carnell. he was smart. receiving a degree in neuroscience. now he's a suspected mass murder, killing innocent people. reportedly dressed as the joker. >> nearly 24 hours after the real life nightmare played out, this face continues to haunt people across the nation. the suspect, 24-year-old james holmes, grew up in a middle class suburb of san diego. high school friends describe him as quiet and normal. >> i kept thinking. what happened? what happened to a nice little boy from a nice family, and it's

terrible. investigators say the nice little boy carried out once f the worst mass killings in recent history. nbc animation based on the police account shows that he threw some type of tear gas canister and then producing round and round of gunfire. >> pe pulled out a shotgun. i could see it clear as day. he opened fire on the front rows. >> the owner of the san diego pawnshop said he talked to holmes about guns and rifles several times. he recognized holmes as the suspect as he watched the coverage of the tragedy from a thousand miles away. >> that seemed very familiar to me. the look around the eye area. and his general features. also, they've been talking about he seemed intelligent and everything else. so just his general demeanor. >> the suspect's uncle lives in carmel.

off camera he described his nephew as unassuming and reports of holmes' own mother says you have the right person indicates she may have seen some red flags. >> a mom's intuition, something he had said. some long-term behavior on his part in terms of showing some very twisted thinking. the psychologist believes he was a loan wolf, perhaps trying to mirror images from the batman series. a villain sprayed bullets into the crowd at a very public place. >> it has people totally and completely unaware. >> everybody was happy and delighted to be there. they were going to have fun, they were going to be excited. and they were going to die, in his mind. >> now the doctor adds he is sure he thought about the proximity to columbine. the theater is less than 20 miles for the high school.

the suspect's family issued a statement asking for privacy. in an unbelievable twist of fate, one of the victims in colorado had narrowly escaped a mall shooting in toronto just weeks earlier. 24-year-old jessica was an aspiring sports writer. she tweeted movie doesn't start for 20 minutes. that was the last message she would send. >> she had a passion for life. it showed in everything she did. >> when a gunman shot into a crowded foot court in toronto a few weeks ago, she had just left. she wrote in a blog i know i truly understand how blessed i am for each second i am given. she was killed just six weeks later. alex sullivan was shot and killed while out celebrating his 27th birthdays with friends and

what do we know about accused gunman james holmes? a clear picture is starting to merge about the gunman. the 24-year-old is described as a reclusive, standoffish grad student from san diego who recently and rather abruptly quit school. he dropped out of a doctoral program at the university of colorado medical school. he graduated with honors in 2010 from uc riverside in neuroscience. he had no criminal history and his only violation was a speeding ticket last year. so far it looks like all the guns and ammunition used in the massacre were obtained legally. the issue of gun control is making headlines after the national tragedy. and senator dianne feinstein is issuing a statement. it reads my hope is also the

country will reflect on the roots of gun violence that has again visited terror on an american community, claiming the lives of more innocent. the san francisco democrat is a long time gun control advocate and was the main sponsor of a 1994 nationwide assault weapons ban which has since expired. feinstein was inside san francisco city hall in 1978 when former supervisor dan white shot and killed mayor mosconi and supervisor henry milk. still ahead on "today in the bay," witnesses describe the gunman's intrainentrance into t theater and why some thought he was a part of the show. and we're waking up to lots of sunshine. 90s inland.

good morning. you're waking up to plenty of sun as you saw, even in places usually waking up in foggy conditions. good morning. i'm anthony slaughter and we are waking up to a delightful morning. same in oakland. warmer in the east and south bay. those are going to be the warm spots today. already, 62 degrees in san jose.

livermore at 61 with folks waking up in concord. we have a high pressure system that's off that's been keeping the middle part of the country very warm. that shifts this way and will stick around sunday. plenty of sunshine all day long. tomorrow 90s inland once again. limited fog, especially in the morning hours. and ahead, the seven day forecast doesn't off a lot of relief for cooling conditions. we look from space. you notice we don't have cloud cover in place. the area of low pressure that was with us earlier this week, it has moved out of the picture. we have high pressure thanks to the warm weather really that's with us until the upcoming part of the workweek. some places like livermore, gilroy, rour goiyou're going to close to 100 degrees later

today. again, as you saw from the sky camera image, not a lot of foggy conditions. 90 is where we're headed in santa rosa. 91 in napa. san jose, not bad. perfect beach day. 82 degrees there. by wednesday there will be a little bit of an onshore flow returning. by wednesday a few more clouds return to the picture. it does look like the temperatures will cool. we're replacing the 90s for 80s. definitely want to remember that. spf. drink plenty of water. it's the weekend. we all like to have fun. definitely got to get at least eight glasses of water in if we're going to be outside during any part of the day. of course, heat related illnesses and death.

i just instinctively jumped forward and ducked inside the middle of the aisle. i had gun shells falling on my head, burning my fare head. all i smelled was powder. >> ann curry spoke with a mother and father in the theater early when a smoke bomb exploded and the gunshots fired. with them they had their 4-year-old daughter and 4-month-old son. >> when i ducked, his head held back into the crack, into the seats in front of us. and got stuck. i was like, his head is exposed. i couldn't stand up because people were standing up getting sholt. all four escaped this theater. president obama and presidential candidate mitt romney put aside their differences yesterday to comfort the stunned nation. instead of scripted attacks at

the fbi and u.s. postal inspector are searching for answers after several east bay departments receive a mysterious mail. someone sent four letters with white powdery substance inside. hazardous material crews were called out to the three police stations into precaution. investigators since determined the substance was not hazardous. police say it was baking powder. along the awaited reunion between the embattled sheriff and his wife. >> they don't want to hug. they want to kiss. a judge lifted the protective order that kept them apart since he was arrested in january on domestic abuse charge. now what? today in the bay's cheryl hurd talks one on one with alianna lopez. >> because this is not right.

over the bay area. some moviegoers have extra company in the form of police. now how bay area theaters are stepping up security measures. >> reporter: one police officer will be walking around checking security. that makes the rodriguez family feel safe. >> i feel fine. i hope it doesn't happen. >> amc theaters are not allowing anyone to wear masks. costumes are okay. despite extra security measures, symptom are nervous. >> where am i going to sit? where can i go? i am pretty worried. >> pierre says he thought about what he would do if something happens. >> i'm going to try to hide. they said he shot everyone who he saw try to run. >> sounds good. but hopefully that will not happen. >> most people we talked to said

good saturday morning once again. looking live at the bridge. traffic moving smoothly there and really around the bay area we have no problems to speak of this morning. in san diego, a police officer is still in front of the suspected gunman james holmes' parents house this morning. it's where he grew up, and his neighbors and friends are still trying to grasp how james holmes could possibly be capable of committing such a heinous crime. danielle bacus reports.

>> it's such a shocking story. >> for this suburban san diego community the reality is horrifying. >> you don't want to believe these things happen. >> suspected of walking into a crowded theater armed with a shotgun, and three more guns. 24-year-old james holmes grew up on spirit avenue. known as jimmy to friends, he graduated from westview high school in 2006. the son of a successful office engineer and a nurse. described as quiet and shy, someone who never stood out except academically. he took advanced academic courses. >> how do you understand somebody you knew a while ago? somebody i can see myself stand next be accused of committing mass murder? >> he wasn't aggressive. he was well humored. he was kind of shy.

it's not like shyness is as an indicator for shooting up a movie theater. throughout the day others would be escorted out of the home. a family spokesperson says this is a very difficult time for his family. they really want everyone to respect their privacy. it's a very, very sad day. they're working with and communicating with authorities. and really that's all we can say. >> that's danielle baucus reporting. no word on police have a presence at the home. life-supports have clearly taken over the streets. much more ahead on "today in the bay." in the aftermath, teens and kids are bouned to have questions for that parents and how something so awful could happen.

all right. welcome back. it's 7:43. you're looking live at alcatraz. sunshine, as you can notice this time of day. so that's quite the change on this saturday. a beautiful day expected all across the board. again, we're talking about very warm conditions. in fact, lalready starting off n the 50s and 60s. 57 in san francisco and oakland.

down south in east bay already in the 60s. that's a sip of what's headed our way once we get to the afternoon hours. that typically sends the monsoonal moisture aup to the four corners region. that will shift this way as we head through the day. that means we get in on the record warmth that we've been talking about. really across the middle part of the country. for today, plenty of sunshine heating up. an the heat does stick with us this upcoming workweek. we're talking mid 80s in the middle of the workweek. we have high pressure that's been dominating most of the country since summer began, and we get in on it today. so we're talking 80s and 90s inland. and other than that, it will be a bit breezy at the coast.

colorado. some of the victims are now describing the attack. he was attending with a friend who said the gunman was no more than 30 feet away. he was wounded in the leg. his friend was also shot. he described the is the as methodical. >> she once. it just lit up the theater. then he coughed and shot again. as that moment i grabbed my buddy. i said get doup ch we have to get down. so i just buried my head down in the aile and started to pray. >> he said he closed his eyes the whole time. when something tragic like the colorado massacre happens, how do you explain to your kids?

good morning. it's going to be warm in san francisco with a projected high of 74. in the valley it's going to be hot so be prepared for that. a gunman opened fire at a packed movie theater in colorado. james and his girlfriend were in the theater nine at century 16 when the gunfire started. ann curry spoke with them on "dateline" last night. >> his head fell back the way i was holding it into the crack in the seats in front of us. and i got stuck and he was crying and i was like, his head is exposed. he's going to get shot. so i just jumped over. so i just maneuvered over somehow and grabbed him.

i crawled towards the sar stairway. i was thinking, should i play dead? are they coming up the stairs? >> the mom was grazed by a bullet, but the children fortunately were not hurt. after the couple escaped the theater, they went to the hospital, which became the scene of another momentous event. he proposed and she said yes. he said the shooting made him realize he could never live without her. another colorado community knows too well what aurora is going away today. less than 20 miles away a shooting at columbine high school in 1999 killed 12 students and one teachers. what does it take for people to overcome a tragedy of this magnitude? ann curry talked with craig scott who survived the column bin shooting. his sister rachel did not. he suffered flashbacks and angers for years.

the turning point is when he decided to forgive the killers. >> for me, for years i held onto hatred to the shooters that had no right to do what they did. killed nen eed innocent people. it started to take a toll on me. the and affect how i treated people. i carried around the anger. part of the healing process is forgetting and letting go. it's leating go of so you can move on. there's a quote that forgiveness is like setting a prisoner free and finding out the prisoner is you. >> he says it took him ten years to reach a real place although he still misses his sister rachel. he also says there can be amazing good that comes out of this. don't let the shooter steal anything from you. much more ahead on "today in the bay." investigators are still trying
