be the source of the scene of an awful lot of action over the next several weeks, savannah. i'll tell you, we're expecting your arrival on wednesday with great anticipation. when the cauldron is lit on friday, london will become the first city to host three olympic games. the first back in 1908. again in 1948. as london was crawling out of world war ii. as with any big event, some people are already complaining from security to traffic to the weather. although let me make a point, savannah. it rained here for 734 consecutive days until i arrived a couple of days ago. and since that time, voila. nothing but sunshine. >> i was going to make that point you arrived and the clouds parted and there was sunshine but good of you to make that point first. >> by the way, if you come on wednesday and it rains -- well, i don't want to go into that. >> don't even say it. >> we're going to talk about those concerns and the final preparations in a moment.
7:02 am
a little later on we'll introduce you to the american athletes to watch including missy franklin. you'll hear a lot about her, the 17-year-old swimmer who could become the games' breakout star. we'll find more about her. >> we're looking forward to that, matt. we'll check in with you in just a little bit. we want to begin with the latest on the tragic shooting in colorado, the search for a possible motive. the suspect is expected in court this morning. we're learning much more about him. nbc's miguel almaguer in aurora. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the suspect, 24-year-old james holmes, has been in solitary confinement since his arrest on friday. i'll he'll be in court later on this afternoon. police say he is the man responsible for the massacre and ripping apart the city. they gathered by the thousands, prayed for the survivors, and shed tears for the victims. >> we will remember you. we will honor you by celebrating life.

"dateline's" chris hanson was given an exclusive look of video taken inside the suspect's home. >> in the middle of the living room there were dozens of softball-sized fireworks charges. he allegedly bought these, filled them with explosive

7:06 am
local police are being praised for their fast response to the shooting. nbc's kate snow sat down with aurora's police chief. kate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. he's been a voice of calm through the entire tragedy but it is still raw. when i sat down with the police chief yesterday, i started by asking him to go back to friday morning when hundreds of calls were pouring in, and the radio dispatch traffic was chaotic. >> i've got seven down in the theater nine! seven down! >> i've got people running out of the theater shot. >> reporter: i listened to those tapes. it's hard to listen to those tapes. >> very hard. >> reporter: the one that hits me, someone says, "i've got a child victim." >> i've got a child victim. i need rescue to the theater nine now. >> reporter: we now know veronica is her name. do you know if one of your officers attended to her? >> yes. yes. i met with that officer.

7:08 am
to draw a cop call? >> we can't possibly know what he intended to do right now. i've been told by the bomb experts if someone opened the door, it would have triggered the device. >> reporter: if that had happened before the theater incident, that could have diverted a lot of your resources. >> potentially, yes. it would have been two simultaneous crises at once. >> reporter: do you have a wife and kids, chief? >> i do. my daughter was at the premiere of "batman." in another theater. so yes. >> reporter: i didn't know that. same theater complex? >> no, no. >> reporter: have you had the chance to hug your daughter? >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: the reason he wanted to talk to us is to make sure everyone knows how proud he is of all of the officers on his force. and this community is proud. at the vigil last night, i saw police officers getting hugs from complete strangers. and savannah, we saw a standing ovation for the police force here. back to you. >> their quick response made a

defense. and they may argue that he's somebody who is not even competent to stand trial. that's something we saw in the tucson shootings that jarod loughner, the defendant there, he's never seen a trial because it was determined early on he wasn't competent. that's probably the road the defense will go down. it may or may not work. we'll have to see what the psychiatrist who will ultimately evaluate him have to say. >> and, of course, it is important to remember he's been in solitary, correct, since the moment he was processed, booked and put in there. and has been told, i presume, very little. this is his first glimpse of life outside a cell. >> that's right. although it is my understanding he did have a chance to meet with his defense lawyer at some point after his arrest. but you imagine by looking at his face the reality of this is very much sinking in at this moment. >> when we were learning the very first details of who he was and the circumstances of the crime, this detail of the red

force other than what was going on in the room. >> i think that's true. he wasn't concentratiing the pr he was asked whether he had anything to say, when he was mirandized by judge sylvester, nothing to say to that, no reaction at all, in fact. unlike other defendants in these extremely dramatic and horrific cases who seem to be engaged in the courtroom, he was not engaged at all. just so you understand, i'm sure savannah spoke about this from a legal point of view, but the way the procedure works here, this was an initial appearance/advisement in which the defendant is told what the charges are likely to be, there will be murder charges, thus the no hold bond, no application for bail. the charges will be filed by next monday, one week, instead of the traditional 72 hours. it may then be a preliminary hearing a couple of weeks from then and then months before the actual arraignment. this is going to be a long, slow and deliberate process. >> and mike taibbi outside in centennial, colorado. and savannah, in the few seconds
