scene this morning and will bring us the latest as soon as he becomes available. >> to decision 2012. a visit met by cheers and jeers. president obama waking up in san francisco this morning following a nonstop day of fundraising in the east bay. christie smith is live at sfo for the second day where air force one will take off in a few hours. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. during his visit to the east bay, president obama saw a lot of what the east bay has to offer from wealthy supporters to protesters in the street and also a number of supporters there for him as well. some of them medical marijuana advocates, protesters who marched around the uptown neighborhood where he spoke at the fox theater. this sls near a kufrt which was raided a couple of months ago and men in the crowd are upset with recent federal crackdowns on marijuana dispensaries. there were anti-war groups out there inside the fox, though,

the president's third stop, a big enthusiastic crowd about 2,000 people, some of them paid from $100 to $7500 just to be there. mr. obama talked about optimism and how the country was built from the middle class up. he told the crowd the other side knows they can't sell their ideas so what they are going to do is try and distort my vision. >> it's what's going on in washington. uncompromising views that the only path forward is to go back to the same top down economics that got us into this mess in the first place. >> reporter: earlier in the evening president obama attended a private dinner in piedmont where it's estimated that he raked in $1.5 million, from here he is taking off around 10:00 and heading to portland and seattle. reporting live in sfo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much.

meantime, republican candidate mitt romney heading to reno to court war veterans as voters. romney will give a speech at the convention of veterans of foreign wars, his appearance one day after president obama spoke to the same group. afterwards romney heading for an overseas trip that will start with a trip to the london olympic games, then israel and poland. >> a police stand-off on an east coast college campus is over. university of connecticut was evacuated overnight after police spotted a man armed with a gun on campus. complete set up a perimeter and confined the man to a remote area of the school. he was arrested after three hours. luckily no one was injured. >> new details 18 deadly shooting in san jose. three young children are now left without parents as police search for a gunman still on the loose. the victims' families tell us they are convinced a jealous

ex-boyfriend shot the two in their home early yesterday morning. neighbors say they woke up to eight gun shots fired at the home on north seventh street and washington. the gunman took off on foot. >> when i ran outside i saw the guy running, he stopped at the corner for a few seconds. >> i thought he was reloading the gun myself. so i told my wife don't go over there. >> san jose police do not have any identification on the suspect in the killings. family and friends, they say the couple's oldest child is 8 and the youngest 5. they are being cared for by their extended family. >> now on to the countdown to the summer olympic games. yes, we're a few days away from the opening ceremonies. but they are not worried that everything -- or they are worried that everything is ready. marla tellez joins us with an update. what's happening? >> jon, good morning. the big concern is security. just this morning britain is forced to take more action after

the security company that it hired announced it does not have enough guards to protect all of the olympic venues. the private company known as g-4s announced it was at least 3500 guards short of the agreed upon 10,000 guards. so today britain's government says it has deployed 1200 more troops to stand guard. more police officers are also stepping in to fill the gaps. here is the breakdown. almost 5,000 additional british troops are now on the clock and 9,000 police officers are on the ground, on the water and in the air. a defense expert says this is only going to make the games safer. >> who would you rather be looked after by, a group of people who are casual employees or the cheerful faces of the army and the police. >> in all, 18,200 military are involved in securing the games. beyond the human might there is

at 4:00 p.m. but we're going to cool you down for tomorrow. that seven-day outlook in my next report. let's see how mike's doing. what's your favorite olympic sport? >> for the summer i love to watch the swimming though i have friends -- were friends of the coach for the water polo team so we're rooting for them. let's go to the ocean and look off to the roadways. over the ocean, the bay bridge, we're talking about a smooth drive on the approach. easy flow of traffic. we're taking you to the peninsula side. the north bay we have construction. southbound 101 from the waldo tunnel down to the golden gate bridge. the construction brings you down to one lane for the next few minutes but we don't see major slowing. this is how late to volume is coming south. even lighter out of the city. visibility is fine. we'll take you over to the east bay. 680 shows a crew heading south out of danville. the on ramp has construction. the northbound side is cleared and you don't see slowing here

the glass ceiling when she flew into space in the 1980s. those who knew her say ride gave american girls something new to dream about. >> very smart physicist and super committed to the cause of getting young women, girls, motivated about science. very sweet. >> after retiring from nasa ride taught at stanford and started a science foundation aimed at inspiring students to study science. >> we have breaking news to tell you about. two people dead after a fire tore through an east bay apartment complex. bob redell arrived there moments ago live in pleasant hill. he has the latest. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning to you. i spoke with one of the battalion chiefs on scene at the breyers apartment complex, this started around 3:30. the fire is out now but it did take two people with it. it was contained to one unit.

when the fire department arrived they said the fire had fully involved the unit. they did find two bodies inside, a man and woman, and their pet. and they don't know yet if they ever tried to make an escape, if there was a smoke detector that didn't alert them or perhaps they died in their sleep. the fire as i mentioned was contained to the one unit. there was smoke that travelled to the others so as a result if you look to the left you have a bunch of people who live in this building now without a home. in part because utilities are shut off also because of the smoke damage. they are talking maybe about 12 units, possibly 60 people, not all of them clearly are here right now. maybe 60 people without a place now. so red cross is on the way. as far as the cause, they don't believe this is suspicious but they don't know how it happened. there is an investigator here. so again, two people killed in a tragic apartment fire at the

breyers apartment in pleasant hill. no one else was hurt. a couple people were treated and released. the firefighters are okay as well. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. cisco systems adding lay off plans. >> scott, more than 1,000. >> that's in addition to the 6500 cuts it had already announced. cisco systems says it will lay off 1300 workers but hasn't said from what department or division. cisco is struggling pointing to the european debt crisis and declining sales to government and big business. 1300 is about 2% of the work force. the good news is most are highly technical engineers and there are jobs throughout for highly technical people. the bad thing is the additional 1300 may not be enough. >> a company doing well, apple,

will report its profits after the bell. some do expect a decline in iphone sales. people are not buying the iphone 4s, they think a 5 is around the corner. apple may be a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy market. we turn to kayla tausche. good morning. >> good morning. we have futures that are slightly lower this morning after the dow suffered again from case of the mondays. the dow closing down for the past eight mondays, the first time that happened in a decade. stocks did claw back from a sharp ly lower open. the dow has been down as much as 239 points on fresh concerns about europe and whether spain will need a full-blown bailout. there is no economic data but we get earnings from at&t, dupont, ups and apple. the dow losing 101 to 12,721 t

nasdaq falling 35 to 2890. and pepsi scores big at the super bowl. the soda giant has struck a multi-year deal to sponsor the halftime show. all-important halftime show. the last time pepsi sponsored was in 2007, when prince performed. the audience this year, a tidy 114 million when madonna performed. that trend continues. looks like a sweet deal for pepsi. >> i'm going to ask our direct tear give the camera a whack. there we go. today's agenda, the engineer from mozyla will demonstrate how to open hotel room doors using off the shelf technology. not every hotel room door but many of them. the hackers show off this technology to show that these

can be taken advantage of. >> thank you, scott. >> it's 5:18. we bring back in meteorologist christina loren. here to tell us about tuesday. what kind of day have we got? >> it's going to be typical for a summer day. things keep changing so it's hard to get used to any norm when it comes to the weather. we've had a cool summer so far and that's going to continue especially through tomorrow through friday. temperatures below their seasonal average. this morning, though it's dark here i can report we have mostly clear conditions all the way from san francisco flew the silicon valley so that's good news. as you make your way up the peninsula ready to kick off a productive day at work. looking at san jose, this is clear sky that let all the heat raid yaet back out, making for a cold start with temperatures in the 50s. it works like this. 58 in san francisco.

57 degrees in san jose. bay side today at noon at about 75 degrees. that's perfection for outdoor lunch plans. 64 at the coast. a little cool and gray for the first part of the day at the coast. the immediate coast, i'm talking about half moon bay and pacifica. inland a little on the hot side. we continue to drop off temperatures all the way throughout the week so. keep that in mind. high pressure building in for one more day. it's going to take hike out of here. an area of low pressure move into the will be for us bringing us a full deck lasting all the way through friday. it's the natural coolant that is going to keep you from turning the ac on. foam we're talking about 84. as we head through the week, temperatures stay mild, right back up sunday into monday.

>> this one is a familiar story. no deal and no dealing. san jose's newest casino is built but not open. san jose city leaders have not decided to approve a permit that casino matrix has been trying to get since last year. at a hearing the city's gaming administrator recommending the casino be allowed to open the first floor only. the top floor would not open until september. a spokesman for the casino says they are working with the city trying to comply with all of the recommendations. the final say now belongs to the chief of police christopher moore who is expected to make his decision by the end of the week. >> want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. you can tell it's cooler throughout this morning. >> it certainly is. it feels crisp. that's an indication we're going to be cooler this afternoon. temperatures in the 70s. we'll have your full forecast. >> antioch highway 4 nice all

bob redell is live in pleasant hill with what firefighters are saying about this fire. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. and what the residents here are saying. we spoke to a neighbor of this young couple killed this morning in this fire in the apartment complex at the breyers apartment. she tells us it was a man and woman, that the girl had lived there recently invited her boyfriend to live with her. they were a young couple, perhaps around 23 years old. she tells us they both were smokers, though. the fire department has not determine what had the cause of this fire is. don't know if that had anything to do with the cause. they do not believe it's suspicious but they do tell us it was an intense fire, when they arrived around 3:30, this two-story apartment unit was already fully involved. we saw an image from a resident who took a picture of the fire. you can see the flames shooting out of the bottom and the top floor. when the fire department arrived they said the two people there

and one of their pets were dead. there is no indication whether or not they actually had a chance to try to escape or if perhaps they died in their sleep. part of this investigation will forrous on whether there was a smoke detector and whether or not it was working. the flames were contained to just the one unit. there is smoke that traveled through the attic affecting possibly four other units, as many as four others. and the entire building had its utilities off. as a result you have 12 units that have been evacuated. the fire department tells us that's about 60 people, some out here now in front of the apartment complex wrapped in blankets waiting for the red cross to arrive. two people suffered a little smoke inhalation but treated on the scene. so again t pleasant hill fire department -- conta costa fire department, excuse me, is trying to figure out what caused this fire and of course to remove the

unreliable and cost too much to install. >> a second suspect in the murders of a father and two sons will be in a courtroom. alfredo reyes was hiding out. he is accused in the death of anthony, michael and matthew bologna in a drive-by shooting. police believe they were mistaken for livele gang webs. >> this is a sad accident. a bay area man falling to his death while mountain climbing sunday. 27-year-old was beginning with his friends when another group of hikers saw him drop out of sight. the rangers found his body 1,000 feet down the mountain. he was a benicia high graduate.

>> drug companies could soon have to pay for disposal of unwanted medication at one county. alameda county board will meet on whether to approach that. currently the county pays $33,000 annually. the lawmakers say they want to shift that burden away from taxpayers. san francisco runs a similar drug disposal program. >> we have to admit that -- doesn't sound like too much but leaders say it could raise $60 million per year. the board is considering asking voters to approve a half cent sales hike f. approved it would increase the sales tax to 8.75%. it would be used for county parks, health clinics, youth programs and jail staffing. it would expire after 10 years. >> time to check win christina

getting on the work week. that's a start taking a live look outside san francisco this morning. waiting for the sun's arrival. same thing in the south bay this morning as we see kind of the glow. >> clear in the south bay. >> amazing the micro climates here. we'll check in with meteorologist christina loren in a bit. cooler you'll notice. >> a catholic church official learning if he will serve time behind bars. monsignor william lynn will be sentenced. prosecutors say he helped cover up sex abuse allegations at the philadelphia archdiocese. the 61-year-old is the first american catholic church official convicted for the mishandling of abuse claims. >> this morning families of those killed in the colorado movie theater massacre must now sadly plan their final good-byes. >> this a day after many of those families found themselves face-to-face in court with the suspected killer.

leanne gregg is live in colorado right now outside that movie theater where i guess we understand at this point a makeshift memorial continues to grow. >> reporter: that's right. actually it's across the street from the theater. there are crosses, flowers, well-wishers, leaving messages to the people who were the victims and their family. of course the theater behind me remains an active crime scene. it's closed as the investigation continues. yesterday for the first time the public had a chance to see the suspect face-to-face during the brief hearing. his demeanor was odd, some described as bizarre. his bright red hair glowing, and he looked down, seemed disturbed, unfocused. some people say that this might encourage the insanity plea. still propers must make a

decision where the death penalty will be something they are asking for. >> thank you very much, leanne. all of this fallout people saying a hollywood movie pulling its previews from the screens of batman. >> exactly. now hollywood studio may have to yank a scene from the film entirely. warner brothers pulled the trailer for gangster squad because it includes a scene where monsters fire into a movie theater audience from behind a screen. trade papers say the studio plans to cut the footage from the movie. warner brothers is not confirming that it ordered the costly reshoots. >> everyone being sensitive. on to brighter news for the summer olympic games, we are three days away from the opening ceremony in london so organizers are under the gun to make sure the venue is set. turns out there are questions around a major piece of that

puzzle. for the latest on all of those preps across the pond. >> let's start with what is certain. the venues are finished on time. the sdium is ready to seat some 80,000 people and ready to hold the more than 10,000 athletes who will be competing. the opening ceremony rehearsals are going well, costing about $14 billion. and olympic officials say london 2012 is under budget. the one gray area security. the games were facing a security shortage. the britain government announcing it has deployed 1200 more troops in addition to the 3500 it was sporsed to roll out last week after the security company said it was prepared to fill its 10,000 guard quota. >> venues are safe and secure, we have the number of people we

a smooth drive through the area. now a look at the south bay. an easy drive through sunol. volume increases but no big deal. southbound 85 still close for 20 minutes. we're looking at the clearing but from the northbound side a couple minute detour, you're fine. >> for the roads, north, no problems, no delays from 238 to the bay bridge toll plaza. the volume increases. the toll plaza and the incline moving nicely. the commute direction, the volume starts to pick up as you head over to san francisco. no delays for that oakland to san francisco bay bridge over to the other side. we're looking at a little bit of a haze, some low clouds but visibility is okay. the marin side you might catch clouds but not a problem as far
