on donegal way. that is where bob redell is live with everything we learned. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you. you can see some of the 60 people evacuated from the briar's apartment complex. they are meeting with red cross who just arrived to try to help them find other living arrangements. as far as the couple killed, a friend tells us that they were in their early 20s, had recently moved in with each other at this complex. not clear if they tried to escape or if they died in their sleep when this fire broke out this morning. a neighbor tells us that they were smokers but fire department says it's too early to tell if that played a role. this cell phone image shows how serious this fire was taken by one of the neighbors. you can see the flames. the fact it was this involved when the firefighters arrived leads the department to believe that this had been burning for a

good 30 minutes before someone called 911. you can imagine part of the investigation will focus on whether there was a smoke detector inside. >> intense fire. i've never seen one outside of like a camp fire that's really going. >> so sad to see something happen like this. never know what's going to happen. >> reporter: that fire severely damaged if not destroyed the unit of origin, it also damaged many, maybe more four other units. there are 12 units. you're looking at about five units are not inhabitable. that's why you have so many evacuated. they evacuated the entire building. you have as i said 60 people and if you look to the left, a bunch more people from red cross arrived to help out these people who had their lives turned upside-down by this fire that has killed two people, again, here at the briars apartment.

two suffered minor smoke inhalation. they were treated and released on the scene. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. president obama is in san francisco this morning following a nonstop day of fundraising in the east bay. christie smith is live at sfo where air force one will take off in a couple of hours. good morning. >> reporter: this was a busy trip for president obama. three fund-raisers back to back in a matter of hours in the east bay. packed crowds, he heard cheers and jeers. we're waiting for him at sfo where he is expected to take off in a couple of hours. after one last night in the bay area. he ended it last night at the fox theater in oakland where big crowds of demonstrators rallied outside, some upset with recent federal moves to shut down

medical marijuana dispensaries including those in the neighborhood where he was. there were anti-war demonstrators inside a packed house, about 2,000 people, some of them paid from $100 to $7500 just for a chance to get up toes and personal with the president. some chanted four more years while mr. obama talked about moving the country forward. >> we are a young nation, and we've got the greatest diversity of talent and ingenuity that comes from every corner of the globe. you can see it here in oakland. no matter what the naysayers tell us. >> reporter: he also told the crowd that it takes more than one term to restore the dream. earlier in the evening he attended a private fund-raiser in piedmont. some guests paid $38,000 a plate. we're told one of the hosts gave the president a t-shirt that read "i heart oakland." president obama expected to leave about 10:00 in the

identify a suspect and a motive. a neighbor who did not want to be on camera tells us about the couple's children. >> devastating. i'm thinking these kids, poor thing, they are going to be trauma sized for life. >> the oldest is said to be 8 and the youngest is 5. if you have any information on this crime you are urged to call san jose police. >> word a benicia man has fallen to his death climbing a mountain in wyoming. it happened sunday. 27-year-old justin belten was descending the mountain with friends when another group of hikers saw him drop out of sight. rangers spotted his body 1,000 feet down from that mountain. thunderstorms prevented officials from recovering his body until yesterday. >> san mateo's board of supervisors wants to ask voters to okay a half cent sales tax f. approved it would increase sales tax from 8.25 to 8.75%.

this move they say would raise 60 million a year for county parks, health, and jail staffing. the board will take this measure up tonight. >> 6:08. the police chief is holding all the cards for the opening of that new matrix casino. at a meeting yesterday, the city's gaming administrator recommended the casino be allowed to open the first floor if conditions are met. the top floor which would00,000 four card room suites will not open until september. a spokesperson for the casino says they are working to comply with the city's recommendations. >> the card room is one of the largest taxpayers and is going to be one of the largest employers sfar independently owned businesses in the city and that's important. the owners take pride that they are giving families good paying jobs, opportunities to work in this economy, hopefully helping the economy turn around.

i heart oakland. the meal was prepared by a renowned chef in berkeley. >> the opening ceremony for the summer olympics now just days away. but there are some concerns over what some call a security shortage. marla tellez joins us with a look at how london is dealing with problem. >> good morning. the question is are the london games adequately protected? up until a few hours ago the answer was not absolute. but britain's government is assuring the world that the city of london, the olympic village, the more than 10,000 athletes there, and the thousands of spectators are and will be safe and secure. london officials announcing just this morning it has deployed 1200 more troops, this is in addition to the 3500 it was forced to roll out last week. the private company it hired coming forward last week saying

it did not have the manpower to fill its 10,000-guard quota. this has caused the military and police to step in, in the end, one defense expert says the games may be better off. >> who would you roth ayou rath looked after by. >> the other concern is transportation because there are more than 6,000 buses in london and it would be just too time consuming to check everyone's bag and impossible to put a police officer on every bus. looking at video here, london was hit by a home grown terror cell that attacked commuters, dozens were killed, that was seven years ago. hence t insecurity about the security. nonetheless, the final count shows more than 18,000 personnel are in place. to put this in perspective, that dwarfs the 9500 british troops currently in afghanistan.

88 degrees in livermore. we're talking about 79 degrees in los gatos so really comfortable conditions in your inland cities where we could be scorching. a lot of people have been letting me know about their cheaper than average pg&e bills. that's going to continue thursday into friday. then we're going to wrap your numbers back up but then not to hot. if you can get by without the ac, we've got good air quality. 6:19. let's check that drive. are we looking good? >> a little better. this is better news because i'm tracking this accident affecting westbound 580. it's actually the on ramp at el charo for westbound 580 so the freeway doesn't have lanes blocked but it sounds like there is a distraction at the on ramp. if you use el charo that will be an issue. the westbound commute holding up. livermore, dublin to the dublin interchange, smooth flow there. we're going to look toward the east shore freeway.

westbound is the commute direction. away from the bridge to the carquinez, there is an accident around san pablo. it's on the shoulder but it's a distraction. counter commute. your commute to the bay bridge is a nice drive. close to the limit. 50s and 60s. east 24, the single eastbound slow on the approach. and we'll get a live look and see how the bay bridge is shaping up. no metering lights but a backup at the cash lane. back to you. >> thanks so much. >> we all know the economy is in a major league slug fest. there are signs the worst is over farce the housing. >> prices measured over year over year showed the first positive gains since 2007. scott mcgrew has been looking closely at the numbers. >> lots of companies and organizations study real estate so let me caution you this is one study from zillow. zillow says when you average american home prices they ticked up compared to the previous

year. we've seen month-to-month increases, that is more good news. this is the first time all of the months added together made a full year's increase, the first since the crisis began. if you look closely at your screen, you're saying wait, scott. is that an asterisk? yes, it is. here is the rest. only about a third of the cities measured actually saw increases. those were big enough to erase the losses in other cities. and, zillow ignores certain data like sales of foreclosed homes. a bit like a doctor saying he can cure all of his parent you ignore the sick ones. even with the asterisk, you know it's good news. apple will report its profits after the bell this afternoon, some expecting a decline in iphone sales because people aren't buying the 4-s, they think the 5 is around the corner. apple is the most valuable company in the united states.

firefighters, he is live with an update. >> reporter: good morning to you. a neighbor as we've been telling you says that the young couple who was killed here this morning that they were smokers but the investigator with the fire department doesn't know yet what if anything that role that might have played. you can see in the cell phone picture taken by a neighbor shows how large this fire was. it was fully involved when firefighters arrived around 3:30. leading the department to believe it had been burning at least 30 minutes. part of the investigation will focus on whether there was a smoke detector. >> they found one unit heavily involved in fire with fire spreading to a second unit. upon getting the fire knocked down and completing a search we located two fatalities in the apartment of origin. we don't know anything about them. investigators are on scene trying to determine the cause of

the fire. >> reporter: a friend tells us that the young couple that they were in their early 20s, a boyfriend/girlfriend who had recently moved in with each other. two other people were treated and released for smoke inhalation. the fire damaged neighboring units, perhaps as many as four. and the building that's beyond that garage there. the red cross has arrived, helping the 60 people who have been evacuated trying to help them with temporary living arrangements. it's not clear if any of those units will be released back to the residents later today. there are 12 total evacuated. that's what we're told. waiting for a building inspect tear see if the units are safe. it's possible some of those could be allowed to go home. the others to rely on the red cross for temporary living arrangements. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> an interesting story, a new report finds hundreds of gas lines across the country could have easily been prevented. that according to a press

investigation which identified 270 natural gas line accidents that could have been avoided or at least diminished by valves that cut off leaking gas. those devices cost as little as $10 but nearly 90% of the nation's gas lines are not fitted with the valves. the gas industry says they are unreliable and cost too much to install. >> a second suspect in the murder of a father and two sons in san francisco two years ago will be in court. wilfredo reyes had been hiding out before authorities found him. he is accused in the deaths of anthony, michael and matthew bologna. they believed they were rival gang members. his alleged accomplice was sentenced last month to life in prison for those murders. >> we are learning more that a bay area man fell to his death while mountain climbing in

wyoming. this all happened sunday at the grand teton national park. justin harold bellman was beginning his decent when he dropped out of sight. park rangers found his body 1,000 feet down the mountain. >> drug companies could soon have to pay for disposal of unwanted medication in another bay area county. the board of supervisors will vote on whether to approve that. currently the county pays $330,000 to discard of unwanted medication. the lawmakers want to shift that burden away from the taxpayers. san francisco is the only city in the bay area which runs a similar drug program. >> let's face it. when you say a half vent it doesn't sound like much but according to leaders they say it could raise $60 million per year. today the board considering asking voters to approve a half

>> breaking news from buffalo new york where a home has exploded and crews are searching for a 12-year-old girl who may have been inside. a total of six people went to the hospital after the house was leveled in the blast and in the rural town of wilson on lake ontario north of buffalo. it all happened about 6:00 a.m. and we are hearing police are actually treating the home as an active crime scene. neighbors report a ball of flames and nothing left but smoking debris. >> we're learning more that the government, that's right, the government may have helped pay for some of the weapons and artillery that the shooting suspect james holmes had for his deadly shooting spree. he had a federal grant to study

neuroscience. leanne gregg is live in aurora, colorado. you have details how holmes paid for the artillery, correct? >> reporter: it's a very interesting question that investigators are looking into. his college graduate program was paid for, free tuition, he didn't have a job and he got a $26,000 a year stipend. so the question is how could he pay for this arsenal of weapons and this bomb material he bought, an assault rifle, a shot gun, two semi-automatic weapons and 6,000 rounds of ammunition including all of the body armor and his get-up that he was wearing when he went in and did what he allegedly did in the theater. so, some very important questions, in fact, the prosecutors have asked the judge to allow them access to the records through cu, the college where he was going and try to

fire investigator arrived here at the briar's apartment here. the coroner is on the scene to remove the body of this young couple. a friend says they recently moved in with each other. they were killed in the fire. it's not clear if they tried to escape or died in their sleep. the fire department tells us they don't believe there was a smoke detector. a neighbor tells us that they were smokers but after speaking with the fire department that cigarettes are designed to burn themselves out without burning materials even though they don't have a cause they don't think that would be likely. this cell phone image shows how serious this was. the fact it was this involved when the firefighters arrived around 3:30 leads the department to believe it had been burning a good 30 minutes.

>> i'm still worried about westbound 580. right there at the connector. we see slowing out of livermore. additional out of dublin and pleasanton. a new accident should be off to the shoulder. there is the slowing in through the south bay. and that focus a problem at the connector. we continue with more slowing. as well as southbound 880. kicking in pretty strong. expect the next half hour slower as you head north through oakland and the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights turned on, then boom, all the way to the berkeley serve. a look at the peninsula, it's a big contract to all of the flooring in the east bay. san mateo bridge no problem. visibility a little haze.
