the olympians when they walk into the stadium they are so excited for the opening ceremony to come. when we talk about the olympics, especially in london, we're eight hours ahead and that affects a lot of people including the working moms so to speak. we'll show you pictures of kerri walsh, went to high school in san jose. the mother of two. most olympians are, well, if they are married they usually don't have kids. there are a chunk of olympians that are working moms. they work at their sport and take care of their kids. kerri walsh, has an interesting dilemma. most of the beach volley ball competitions are late at night and she has two young boys and her husband coming to town today well past their bedtime. >> i can't wait. we play almost at midnight every night so that's going to be interesting to juggle when i go to see them, if they make it to the matches. as long as they are safe and sound, i'm a happy girl and i'm planning on kicking butt and going and get some love and

living it all. i'm excited. >> reporter: amazing we've been following kerri walsh around the world for several years, a gold in athens and beijing. we'll see what happens here with her partner misty may-treanor. we talk about someone else, the familiar face, talking about prince william. earlier today here in london prince william taking on the soccer pitch. he went out and played some football, or soccer if you will, along with some of the kids in southeast london. it's interesting because the entire royal family, especially prince william, prince harry and kate middleton now, taking a big role in these olympics. there has been a deliberate attempt to publicize the royal family in the last 18 months. of course the queen's jubilee happened a couple months ago. now with the olympics two high profile events for the city of london. so that's just the beginning of a long road ahead for us.

three weeks, it should be a lot of fun and a lot more to come. guys, back to you from afternoon london to morning in the bay area. >> 1:00 in the afternoon. okay, raj. we'll talk to you in a bit. thanks so much. >> the opening ceremony the tomorrow but the men's soccer competition gets under way today. we'll tell hue is favored to win and why team usa does not even have a shot at a medal. >> closer to home, new details, the tragic movie theater shooting rampage in colorado. today we're learning more about a suspicious package that the suspect apparently sent to the university he attended. federal agents say the accused shooter james holmes tipped them off to the package sent to a professor at the medical campus in aurora. sources tell nbc news it contain add notebook that reportedly detailed holmes' plan for the rampage and contained stick figure drawings of the massacre.

neighbors of the accused shooter are now allowed to return home. the apartment complex was evacuated last friday after investigators had discovered that holmes' apartment was rigged with explosives. specialists spent several days dismantling the devices. >> gun control is becoming a hot button issue following the colorado shooting. last night president obama told a crowd in new orleans he would embrace more restrictions on the sale of weapons and he is promising to work with congress to pass new laws. while in london republican candidate mitt romney says changing gun laws will not prevent another tragedy. investigators say aurora shooting suspect james holmes broke no laws and passed background checks when he purchased weapons. >> a police radio glitch nearly compromised a safety plan for president obama's visit. the officers association tells the chronicle a major portion of the city's police radio system failed minutes after the

president left town monday. it left about 100 officers unable to communicate as protesters roamed telegraph avenue. the system has had plenty of breakdowns and is prone to dead zones. the council has the opposite of joining a shared radio network with alameda county and contra costa county but the administrator says she needs to know more about the costs and benefits. >> a frightening rash of robberies at a san leandro atm have the police asking for help. three holdups at the same bank branch have investigators alarmed. stephanie is live with more on this trend. good morning. >> good morning to you. this is happening at the wells fargo branch off of merced street. the recent of the three holdups was tuesday night at around 8:00 when a 25-year-old woman was at the atm, a man went up behind

her with a gun, pointed it at her and demanded cash. before that was sunday night around 7:00, two men and a woman standing in line here, but actually there was a man who was second in line, one of the suspects pulled out handgun, demanded cash, the three victims gave him $200 each. the suspect was accompanied by another man who ran off. a week earlier at the same time, same thing happened. two men at gunpoint robbing another man and running away with his wallet. >> scum bags. you know. what else. not going to stop. they are going to do what they are going to do. >> very quiet, nothing happen so i don't know about the incident of the bank but here it's nothing so i don't know. going to be nervous about that. >> reporter: maria rodriguez there works nights at the denny's a few hundred feet from the wells fargo atm.

the manager warning of recent car break-ins in the parking lot. descriptions match in the first two robberies, two black men in the early 20s. here live you see the surveillance camera at the wells fargo atm. police are looking at the footage from here and the denny's restaurant hoping that will help them catch these guys. police saying be careful and try to go out to the atms with not just yourself but a friend. live in san leandro, "today in the bay." >> the metropolitan transportation commission narrow lee defeated a proposal. the board says it cannot afford the $4 million cost. some of that money would have funded similar programs in the peninsula and the south bay. more than 30 low income student who is attended the meeting chanted shame on you at the

crowd is waking up and getting their coffee and stretching because they are ready for facebook not to hit this number. $1.15 billion. that's sort of the whisper number we expect out of facebook today. total revenue. if they don't hit that, that's going to cause big problems for facebook. remember, facebook itself has been downplaying expectations. releasing revised forecasts just before its famous ipo in may. constantly admitting it has a problem with mobile. if facebook misses its estimates it will be a day of bad press for the social network. its stock is already down about 25% from its original ipo. and remember, we're a couple of days ago the most important, most valuable, most trusted company in silicon valley, apple, missed its estimates and it was punished at the stock market. just after the close today, we'll get facebook's numbers.

and across the pond. >> it's going to be warmer there than in most of our bay area cities. only one day away now. the excitement is out of control here at nbc bay area, so proud to be the home of the 2012 olympic games. and of course proud to be american. 80 degrees for thursday, 76 tomorrow, temperatures will drop off more so, look at that drop between friday and saturday. we're going to watch all of these live pictures from london changing. one thing we have in common with them, the fog. it's out there in full force this morning through the inland valleys. throughout this afternoon it's going to take a while for the fog to burn off. we'll hit about 82 inland, cooler than average for this time of year. right around 63 degrees. not that great when it comes to coastal cities. however, we're going to get fantastic beach weather. 72 hours. i'll take you through your full forecast. the seven-day is ready to go. we'll see how your drive is.

>> we're going to the dumbarton bridge. from the peninsula and facebook where scott is giving us updates. toward fremont and you still have the road crews. they should be clearing. this creates the most disruption. but we have your lanes open and no slowing shows up on our sensors. a note southbound 101 we're seeing major slowing south to marshall. we have the construction zone on the opposite sit side of the barrier but all of those trucks lining up caused a distraction out of redwood city into menlo park. probably 7:30, 8:00, is when that kicks in. the east bay is moving except for mere. it's moving, just a lot slower. a through l streets. no incidents. across the oakland area, a smooth drive to the bay bridge.

east st. john and second street in downtown san jose. bob redell is live with an update on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. san jose police are trying to i.d. a suspect. they found out about this from several 911 calls from people driving by. this happened around 8:40 last night. and what people reported was a man lying face down on the sidewalk in front of trinity church here. it's the oldest church in san jose. people thought the man might have been hit by a car but they realized he had been stabbed at least once in the chest. they took the man to the hospital where he died. he does not have a wallet on him according to a sergeant we spoke with earlier. so there is no i.d., they don't know who he is but appears in his early 30s. st. james park across the street from this church is a popular

place for people who live oyn the streets. police do not think this man was homeless. they have no witnesses, they have no suspects. they don't know the motive but for whatever reason they say they do not believe that this was a robbery. reporting live in downtown san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:32. a south bay suspect wanted for killing the parents of three young children is on the run. san jose police say 31-year-old pedro medina could be on the way to los angeles or mexico right now. officers say he has several tattoos including the grim reaper on his lower right leg. they say he killed the couple early monday morning. the couple's three children were home at the time but were not hurt. >> 5:32. an alarming case of animal cruelty in monterey county.

the carcasses of more than 100 kittens and remains of dozens more. a company that manages two properties alerted police and the spca. they found the dead cats and seized 51 adult cats. they were taken to the animal shelter to under go care. >> it took us six or seven hours, that included the time of assessment here at the triaging of all of the cats and getting them medication, getting them to be in safe living quarters. >> the catses are suffering from respiratory infections and parasites. as of now no arrests have been made. these are busy one city. a rash of burglaries keeping police busy. stephanie chuang is live with more on this trend. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're at the wells fargo atm.

it gets pretty busy here. three holdups in 11 days, the recent one was 8:00 tuesday night when a woman says a man walked up and demanded cash. 7:00 sunday night a gunman was standing in line and demanded cash from two men and a woman. each gave him and an accomplice 200 bucks. the man lost his wallet. it was stolen. we spoke with customers. they had no idea about the armed robbery. >> of course i'm worried. this is a nice neighborhood. i live around here, make me more worried. >> reporter: there is a denny's near the atm. the restaurant manager warned of car break-ins. a new employee we spoke with said police are often in the area but she is hoping they will increase patrols.

foreign policy credentials. he met with former prime minister tony blair. brian mooar is live on capitol hill with more on that part of the story. good morning, brian. >> reporter: president obama, he's here in washington trying to pressure congress to pass the middle class tax cuts but mitt romney is where the president was four years ago, overseas trying to build on a foreign policy resume. today, mitt romney sat down with former prime minister tony blair, very carefully trying not to make any controversy, trying to not make any headlines while he's overseas, certainly not attacking the president. he was talking about the weather and what events that the former prime minister is looking forward to in the olympics. later today romney is going to meet with british prime minister david cameron talking about a lot of things, this is a trip that's going to take romney to israel to poland. during some of these events he

may be trying to draw contrasts between himself and the president but the romney campaign is calling this a listening tour. brian mooar, marla, laura, back to you. >> the countdown to the official start of the olympic games. this morning the city of london putting together the finishing touches for the opening ceremonies tomorrow night. here is a live look at london at this hour. it's 5:43 here. 1:43 in the afternoon on this thursday. now, the torch still has not been lit but there's plenty of olympic action today. >> this time it's the men's soccer team taking the field. here is a look earlier. honduras started playing morocco at 4:00, that game is still in progress. mexico facing off against south korea at 6:30 and spain taking on japan at 6:45. >> unlike the women's tournament which is an open competition, men's soccer has more restrictions. men's teams have to abide by the under 23 rule which means all

but three of the players must be under 23. the age limit makes men's olympic soccer a tricky sport to predict because every four years most of the team rotates out. >> this year athletes are finding out the hard way social media is a game changer. with so many athletes posting on facebook and tweeting, the international olympic committee has four pages of social media guidelines. those contributed to a greek triple jumper getting kicked out of the games because she, allegedly, posted a racist tweet. certainly drawing attention to the importance of social media in an athlete's career. one mistake can be costly. >> it could cost you millions of dollars of endorsements, fees, money, and just reputation wise. >> sports psychologists say some treat their social media accounts like a journal. it's important to be cautious of

emotions on such a public platform. >> keep it professional. there is no bigger platform than the olympic games. with one more day until the opening ceremony, london is ready. >> so is our own raj mathai. raj, the olympic torch making its way through london now, right? good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. good afternoon for us. by the way, it's a 10-hour flight from the bay area to london. can you make it if we sent awe ticket now? >> i'm taking off my mike as we speak. >> reporter: we'll see you out here. we'll save you a seat. we're in east london about 5 miles from buckingham palace and the river thames and so forth where most people think about london. we're at the olympic stadium and yes, this is the place to be tomorrow might for the opening ceremony. for what's happening now it is that torch relay. we'll show you some footage of the olympic torch making its way here toward the olympic stadium and olympic park. it's been a great journey. this is always a great symbol of

the olympics, the torch, so many people, community volunteers running the torch all over the united kingdom. we had three torch runners ourselves from the bay area, they ran earlier legs of the torch. right now it's making its way through london, through buckingham palace earlier and it will be here tomorrow night. there is a more serious note to what's happened. a little controversy now. coming from last night and one of the soccer matches. not a good way to start. this was a mistake with the flag. the north korean women's soccer team simply walked off the field in protest. they were upset that the jumbo screen at the stadium showed the south korean flag and not the north korean flag. such a bitter relationship between the two countries you can imagine all the feelings that were involved. olympic officials apologized profusely for the mistake, they corrected the flap of the flag on the jumbotron, about an hour later the north korean woman won their match.

this morning are crisp and cool. 56 in san francisco. as we head throughout the next couple hours we'll continue to see the marine layer. still over the city by the bay. lots of clouds situated over san francisco. that's going to keep you cool today. that cooling trend changes as we head through this weekend. so if you want to take care of outdoor activities, something you want to do when it's not too hot. walk the dog, probably a good idea to do so as temperatures will start to heat up right as we head through saturday. high pressure is starting to take a dip to the south. we'll see cool air come in as the jet stream also dips to the south with the ridge of high pressure. as we head throughout saturday, sunday, the ridge moves back in, strong with a vengeance so temperatures come up from the 70s back to the 90s as we head into the weekend. 89 by saturday, 93 degrees on sunday. staying warm next week with lots of 90s on the way. so make sure you enjoy the cooler than average weather.
