then off to the olympic park where we are for the opening ceremonies. she will be sitting with bay area soccer legend brandi chastain. a couple miles from here is big ben, and big ben, the big clock tower along the river thames was very loud this morning. take a listen. at exactly 8:12 this morning big ben sounded 40 times kicking off the official day of celebration. by the way, the same foundry that made big ben made the liberty bell in philadelphia. a little london trivia as it relates to the united states. and now to the opening ceremony. the rehearsal, we have footage from inside the stadium. acclaimed danny boyle will be conducting all of this and producing this. danny boyle, you might have seen slum dog millionaire, a huge star here, what's the budget for the opening ceremony they are

we bumped into mitt romney and his wife about 15 or 20 minutes ago. you got to stay active with what's going on at the olympics. >> tell them we said hello. >> reporter: you got it. >> thanks, raj. >> here at home an olympic memory tarnished for a fremont teen who went from having the best day of his life to a nightmare. kylan carried the torch in england. he and his family continued on to rome where thieves stole a family suit case at the train station. the bag held the photos and video of the teen's torch run. >> i realized that my gosh, that's the bag that has the camera, the video camera. all of our pictures and videos, stuff i haven't even seen yet. >> the story got worldwide attention. when people heard about it they began e-mailing him pictures and videos. luckily his uniform and torch

were not in the stolen bag. he is expecting them to arrive by mail to his home in fremont today. >> 5:03. new detail this is morning as police try to track down a man accused of killing a supple in front of their children. we know what kind of car the suspect is driving. police say 31-year-old pedro medina most likely driving a black nissan maxima. investigators believe he is in los angeles and could be headed for mexico. he is accused of shooting pedro and marybel jimenez in their home monday morning. police say medina once dated marybel and perhaps acted out of anger or jealousy. the san jose police officers association is asking for donations on behalf of the victims' three children all under the age of 8. to contribute visit sjpoa.com. >> in the east bay the search is on for a band of smash and grab

thieves who burst into a mall and began shooting. at least one of the suspects fired a machine gun when the group walked into a jewelry store at the new park mall in newark yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt. the suspects smashed display cases and grabbed jewelry before taking off 18 white mercedes and black acura or lexus. >> today is the day a bay area business learns if it's card room bet pays off. after delays operators of casino matrix should learn if they can open their doors. stephanie chuang is live at the san jose high rise, it's all lit up and they are ready to go. now we got to wait. >> reporter: that's right, laura. it looks plenty ready now. the $50 million, eight-story casino matrix was planning to open in april, but they didn't get the permits in time. so, they could open by as early as mid august. it depends on whether the police chief gives the green light, gives approval which is expected

sometime today. the delay in getting the permit has lasted for months now. the owner who is revamped the garden city casino into matrix had complained that the city had been board ear line harassing them on regulations. but a judge struck that down last month. the city does have some of california's toughest regulations when it comes to card rooms. they were enacted years ago because of problems out of garden city and bay 101. on monday the city's gaming administrator said he wanted the casino to have bert monitoring and a final inspection of the surveillance system among other requirements before giving the final go as some of the requirements before moving forward. the owners of bay 101 across the bay shore freeway, also sent police chief moore a letter with some concerns but so far no comment from the chief or response so far. the owners here at casino matrix did want to open some tables a few on the top floor, but the city saying for now that idea has been shut down until the chief can take a closer look.

again, the big news is that the casino matrix could get the green light from the police chief at some point today. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> donors who made contributions to keep california parks open say they want their money back. it is in response to the discovery last week that more than $50 million in surplus funds had been hidden away in accounts managed by parks officials. the donors are demanding refunds or a promise from lawmakers to spend the money on parks. the state attorney general's office is investigating. experts say half the money could have been spent to avoid recent park closures brought on by budget cuts. >> 5:07. grab those breath mints. no, no. talking to people in the bay area, going to have a bad taste of garlic breath. >> the garlic capital of the world is throwing its annual party and we can smell it. bob redell is live at the gilroy

many plates are you cooking up? >> today i'm going to be here about 16 hours total all said. tomorrow and sunday i'm here usually for about 12 or 13. i'll do up up, by the time the weekend is over probably end up doing couple hundred pans or so. >> looking at the numbers, you have 7,000 pounds of calimari, 20,000 pounds of beats, 4,000 pounds of scampy, 7,000 pounds of pasta, that's a lot of food and this is all for charity for local charities. around $300,000. i heard a clinging of pots and pans which mean there is is probably a hot plate waiting for me. >> that's your call. >> what about the cool stuff, garlic ice cream? >> how much garlic ice cream they have? >> i'm not sure. one or two tubs.

facebook apparently. mark zuckerberg said on thursday that it would, quote, not make much sense for facebook to partner with one phone company on a facebook phone. that comment came as facebook reported its profits. kayla tausche has those numbers. good morning. >> scott, it wasn't a good day for facebook. the stock slumping more than 10% last night. the social networking giant reported a net loss as a public company. the revenue growth was the slowest in more than a year. more people are logging on from their smart phones which is why there was speculation about facebook making a phone but facebook on mobile doesn't have as many paid ads. it's lost a third of the value since may and starbucks stock flagging down about 10%. while the coffee chain's quarterly profits rose they missed wall street's and its own

a nice westerly wind. good morning to you. temperatures are nice and comfortable to start in the 50s, even the 60s out there. 61 in sunnyvale, 55 in san francisco, you're at 58 in santa cruz so another ridge of high pressure on the way as we head throughout the weekend. this dip in the jet stream has helped us out. temperatures have been much cooler than average. we're going to hold onto the cooldown for one more day, this will be the lowest day when it comes to temperatures throughout the week, 70s and 80s again, i'm forecasting about 76 degrees in san jose with good air quality. so open up the windows because things are changing quickly around here. 80 in livermore. about 63 in san francisco. much warmer weather around the corner. 90s by this weekend. 5:18. here is mike and your drive. >> northbound 280 as you pass by fourth we had the overturned vehicle. the off ramp is cleared so now we're looking at a nice northbound drive, heading north

into silicon valley. south of here, bob redell gave you that appetizing report from the garlic festival. that's here. 152 over toward l.a., and here is your way over to where the garlic festival and this will mean congestion throughout this area starting today all the way through sunday night. then of course the breath mints will make you remember that on monday as well. 880, a look out past the coliseum, 880 moves nicely, northbound with the taillights a. good number of them, look at the flow. as well as the golden gate bridge where flow comes across the water without problem. visibility is great throughout the north bay. >> the giants taking on the rival l.a. dodgers at at&t park tonight. >> it's the first of three-game series in san francisco this weekend. not only are the teams rivals but also the top two in the nl west. the giants know they are in for a tough series. >> they have gotten some help, and we're going to have to play

jose which is really clear at this point. but you can see we do have clouds out there. mostly cloudy start, temperatures today running mild. high pressure is going to build. for us that means a major warm-up on the way. so enjoy what we have in store for you. 70s inland. i'm talking about 76 degrees in san jose. really hard to beat that. back to you. actually we'll get a look at your drive. >> on the roads now, we're looking at 580 westbound and there's some slowing out of the wind mill farms into livermore. speeds in the 40s where you see yellow. we'll show you how widespread it is. no big surprise as we approach 5:30. we see a 15-minute drive slowing into livermore, but then you're fine all the way to the dublin interchange. westbound slowing a tad bit. that's not a problem. construction is at summersville between lovers and continues and the traffic flow not a problem.

the pond we arrive in london. here is a live look at that gorgeous city where our own raj mathai is. we'll be checking in with him on this friday, july 27th, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. it is 5:30. i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning, one of the victims in the jerry sandusky case is threatening to sue penn state. for the first time, a man has come forward claiming he is the boy who was sexually assaulted in the team shower by sandusky. his lawyer says they have gotten overwhelming evidence on the details of the sandusky abuse and they are threatening a suit against the university. a team graduate assistant testified that he saw sandusky and the boy, both naked in the team shower. and a jury convicted sandusky on 45 counts ever sexual abuse. no word on when the lawsuit will

be filed or what that man is seeking. >> roads are reopened following a fatal bicycle accident in the south bay. a 56-year-old man was hit and killed by a car about 6:30 thursday night as he rode along campbell avenue. the 28-year-old driver who allegedly hit the cyclist stayed on the scene is cooperating. campbell avenue was closed much of the night. >> major change in the works in the wake of a rafting tragedy that claimed the lives of two teens. the teens you may recall drowned in february of last year when they tried to raft down walnut creek. in response the county hired an engineering firm. the findings are in. recommendations include the installation of racks, nets, cables and escape ladders. another option is a complete channel restoration, but almost every option has a down side

ranging from flooding concerns to high costs. >> a toddler is recovering after falling into a fire pit at a marin county campsite. the boy suffered burns when he fell backward into the fire. no word on his condition. >> san jose's police chief holding the cards for opening the casino. it was recommended that they open the first floor if conditions are met. the top floor with four card room suites won't open until september. a spokesperson for the casino says they are working to comply with all of the recommendations. the chief is expected to make his final decision today. >> caltrans turned the lights n on. the custom made system will use 48,000 l.e.d. lights when the bridge is complete. the system can flood the roadway

typically it gets warm down there. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. today is the best day. >> if opportunity coolest of the weather. some like it hot, laura and marla. beautiful day shaping up. i'm going to tell you right now it's going to be kind of dreary for the first part of the day bayside and at the coast. this is what we expect. temperatures now are in the 50s and 60s as we head throughout this afternoon, climbing into the 70s. we're going to round out the day. this is san francisco. you can see mostly cloudy conditions. the clouds are lowering as we speak. the fog will be at its dense point between hours of 8:00 and 10:00. we'll be watching closely. right now no delays out of any major airport. 54 in novato. a lot of people heading out and about as we are still in our summertime month. the next couple hours temperatures are going to climb

to about 74 at noon, 80 at 4:00. here is mike and your drive. >> that note about fog, that is a big deal into or across that golden gate bridge. keep that in mind. along the coast, highway 1 likely to get thick patches of fog and into half moon bay. between half moon bay and san mateo we did have construction on 92 up until a few minutes ago. that will go on the rest of the month until the end of august, so that will be an issue if you travel before 6:00 a.m. the freeway will remain open. a look at 92 across the water. that's the san mateo bridge. a beautiful view but the low clouds are hovering. you can see the sun making a glow. this may cause an issue. maybe even the san mateo bridge. smooth drive through the castro valley y, the volume will increase because all of these folks are coming out of

>> counting down to the olympic games. here's a live look at london this morning where no doubt thousands of people are hard at work putting the finishing touches for tonight's opening ceremonies. finally here. also hard at work, the olympic athletes. >> soccer is in play. today archery will be too. u.s. has a good shot at gold. this guy here, 22-year-old brady ellison from arizona is ranked number one in the world. the archery contest will be at the most famous cricket venue in the world, the lord's cricket ground at st. johns wood in london. once the games are over the venue has two weeks to get the field back in shape for a five-day match between england and south africa. >> mitt romney went to london to see the olympics and meet with foreign leaders. >> a comment he made to nbc's brian williams questioning whether london was ready kautz add diplomatic stir. >> brian mooar has more for us.

this is stirring up a lot of things. >> this is a gold medal gaffe, mitt romney winning the running of the mouth event. look, if you're going to sound off on a city, an olympic city and talk about their security and how you don't think that their immigration people may be ready to deal with labor issues, probably don't do it in the city with 1.2 gagillion newspapers ready to pounce on your every word. that's what mitt romney did and is paying the price. he went to london hoping to watch the olympics, have a nice photo opp, sit down with leaders, but really, add to his foreign policy resume. he is practicing rapid fire diplomacy trying to say of course london is a wonderful city, that they are ready for the olympic games, but london's mayor apparently not a fan. >> i hear there is a guy called mitt romney who wants to know

afternoon? >> reporter: almost 2:00. we are wide awake here at the 2:00 hour. yes, we're going to talk about the first lady. president obama will not be here. he is one of the few notable exceptions who won't be here for the opening ceremony. as you mentioned, the first lady is here and in fact, let's take a look. a couple of miles from where we are, michelle obama hanging out with a lot of kids and olympians, really kind of spreading the word about childhood obesity and enjoying the olympic experience. >> you all take advantage of everything, stop, look around you. i know in my position sometimes i don't get a chance to breathe or take it in. you know, this only happens every few years. so try and have fun, try to breathe a little bit. but also win. right. >> reporter: she's having a good time. it's good advice. a lot of olympians we talked to in terms of veterans, they say

the first time they compete in the olympics it's always a blur, it's the second and third time where they take time and enjoy it. so we saw michelle obama, she is here a couple miles from us, tonight she will be here at the olympic park in the stadium for the opening ceremony and here comes the dilemma. sitting with the first lady is a bay area olympic legend in terms of a soccer star, brandi chastain. we caught up with her and is excited but first and foremost she is a little nervous about her wardrobe. >> i am so excited, although i'm paranoid about what to wear to the opening ceremonies to sit in the first lady's delegation. usually they just give you your uniform so you don't have to do thinking. a little stressful to decide what to wear next to michelle obama. >> reporter: that's what brandy chastain was thinking about. the retired soccer star is

active in the community. look at this shot. london along the river thames, that's what we woke up to. it's a little muggy, a little rainy but it is nice. about 20% chance of rain going into the opening ceremony. here's something that we found out as we bring you back in. tonight's opening ceremony is not sold out. there are still some seats available. but here's the catch. and marla, we're on a budget. for laura, this is in her range. >> wait a minute. i'm the one with triplets. >> reporter: ready? here it is. the tickets right now 2,000 bounds. if you do a conversion, that's about $4500. so laura, i'll save two for you. you can afford it. take brent. >> i don't know if we can make it by that time. how exciting. you get to see history. see how they compare to beijing.

then look at the difference between friday and sunday. as you watch here on nbc the weather is going to be dramatically changing and a lot of these games are outdoors. so it's going to be cool to see how that plays out. we're talking about crisp conditions here. did you know stanford will represent more olympic sports than any other school in the usa. that's pretty cool. 11 sports total here in the bay area representing, proudly, go usa. 55 in san francisco, 59 degrees in san jose. as we head throughout the afternoon, high pressure moves in. and we've got a little cool air hanging out from an area of low pressure. today, we'll be at our coolest with clouds all the way through the inland valleys, tri-valley, mostly cloudy. a few 80s inland. the weekend heats up, maybe the triple digits by sunday in some cities a. big time warm-up taking place.

>> welcome back everyone. 5:53. good friday morning to you as well. with all of this olympic talk making you feel athletic this morning, scott mcgrew has a great sports gadget. >> you know what a heads up display is, the pilots use them all the time so they don't have to look down on the controls. that's the idea behind something called the sport eyes, it's a small electronic unit that attaches to your sunglasses. see the light. it went away. there it is. it uses a small wand to display lights in your field of vision as you are bicycling or what no. these can be programmed to tell you things. you can connect it to the bike's speedometer to tell you if your pedal cadence is where you want or you're at your target heart right. sensor makers agreed on a wireless standard, you can measure all kinds of things so the actual device clips onto your glasses here and then there is a flexible wand that goes in front and displays the lights.
