kelley. >> the day finally her we've all been waiting the first day of the 2012 london olympics. "today in the bay's" raj mathai is live in london where the city is alive with excitement. >> reporter: hello. it's buzzing with excitement. seven years in the making and it's here. let's take a look at a live picture from the beautiful river thames, a few miles away from where we are at the olympic park and yes, it is muggy, it is hazy, it's a little uncomfortable but this city is still beautiful. london is ready in a big way. these are going to be emotional olympics for team usa. two of the biggest stars for team usa likely will retire from the olympics, in essence their last olympic games talking about michael phelps and natalie coughlin. natalie grew up from vallejo. she hinted this will be it. for michael flems, he's pretty firm about it. >> this is closure.

it's really how many toppings i want on my sundae. i'm having fun. >> reporter: michael phelps continues to have fun. we'll see how many golds or any medals he can add to thinks collection. so here we are, london 2012. i remember back in 2002, ten years ago, we all went to chicago, the u.s. olympic committee had a news conference and they announced that san francisco was a finalist to host the 2012 games. here we are now in 2012 and it's not happening, san francisco was beat out obviously by london. we chatted with the head of the san francisco bid. here she is. >> we were extremely disappointed. i think surprised is the wrong word so we were very disappointed because we really thought we could win in the international phase of the competition. >> once london was chosen i was very happy about that as well.

>> reporter: london is a beautiful city, no shame in losing out to this city. what's next for the bay area? maybe 2024, right now, though, no bids are being accepted but the bay area, the bay area sports committee wants the olympics to come to san francisco. they are waiting to quhat the usoc whenever they are ready to talk. that's going to do it from here for now. coming up later we're going to talk about the opening ceremony. we've got some exclusive video behind the scenes at the rehearsal. we'll tell you what's in store for tonight. back to you in the bay area. >> a pretty spectacular show planned. sounds great. >> during tonight's opening ceremony mariel zagunis, a fencing champion, will be carrying the u.s. flag. she received this honor after a vote by her fellow u.s. olympians, picked over a number of big name candidates including

chefs are firing up the frying pans. how much have you had to eat so far? >> reporter: you can smell it by my breath in the fact that my interviewe is a good four feet away from me. steve, this is his 32nd year here as the pyro chef. he is the 34th year for the gilroy garlic fest. expecting 100,000 people here. you want to plan if you're coming down this weekend. i'm wondering, is this the most stressful time or biggest relief? >> it's a huge relief. i've been telling myself that. seems too easy. it's going together too easy. it's the team of people we have making it happen. one proud president. >> going to have a couple more things. more shade. a nice weekend in the 80s. >> we added 6500 square feet of shade, people have been screaming for for a lot of

brandi chastain. brandi is excited about this honor to be part of michelle obama's delegation. she is a nervous wreck. what do you wear? >> i am so excited although i'm paranoid about what to wear to the opening ceremonies to sit in the first lady's delegation. usually they give you your uniform and you wear it so you don't have to do any thinking. it's stressful to decide what to wear. >> reporter: we know brandi chastain for her sports bra. we'll see what she wears. tonight here it is a little preview. we have video from inside one of the rehearsals of this opening ceremony. here's what you need to know. it's costing about $42 million which is about 27 british sterling pounds. it's directed by danny boyle who did "slumdog millionaire." more than 10,000 athletes from

around the world and one billion viewers. we'll all be tuned in unless of course you have a ticket to the opening ceremony and you know what, tickets are still available. we heard from the organizing committee this is not sold out but you got to have a lot of money and get a quick flight. tickets $4500 if you want to get in, the theme of tonight's show the isles of wonder. paul mccartney will perform singing hey jude and david beckham will have a role but we don't know who and we don't know who the final torchbearer is, always a big moment of the opening ceremonies. that's the latest from london. we have a lot on our plate and a great night ahead. back to you. >> are you going to get a chance to go to the opening ceremony? >> reporter: i think so. i'm not going to pay the $4500 price. >> come on. >> reporter: like i said, the

starting with a live look over san jose. you can see here over cast conditions. it moves throughout the day so. temperatures work out like this. we're going to be in the 50s and 60s to start, probably until about 10:00. maybe 11:00 by the water with all of that cloud cover, limited sunshine. 60 degrees in sunnyvale right now. perfect air for a brisk run this morning. cool conditions continue today as we've had a nice dip in the jet stream. throughout the next couple of days, high pressure moves back in quickly. for us that means we're going to see much warmer conditions. today highs in the 70s and 80s transition into the 90s and i'm talking about the mid to upper 90s. as we head through next week. the seven-day outlook tells the story. mid 90's monday, tuesday and wednesday. >> in addition to the accident

london 2012 will be celebrated with a big crowd on the peninsula. downtown redwood city hosting a big telecast of all of the celebrations. stephanie chuang is live in downtown redwood city where they hope for thousands of people to show up tonight. good morning. >> >> reporter: good morning. they are hoping for that, that's what happened the last time they held an event like this for the 2008 beijing olympics. we're live in downtown redwood city. you can see that the stage is set up, ready to go and later there will be a trailer with a 9 x 12 screen for the viewing party. today the ceremony honoring olympians from the bay area led by ann, we understand a stanford graduate who scored the gold medal in rome in 1960 for swimming the 400 meter medley relay. a lot of excitement. and we want to bring in right now one of the big men behind it

all. the special events coordinator. thanks for waking up early to join us. >> no problem. >> i want to ask you, this is the second year you're doing this. first was 2008, beijing. tell us about the success there. >> it was a huge turnout. we were incredibly impressed with the number that came out to join together and watch the opening ceremonies so it was a great tradition to carry forward. when nbc came to us again we couldn't turn it down. >> there were 3500, maybe 4,000 people. >> the area was standing room only. it was packed. we had overflow on both sides. >> a huge motivation, we're right in downtown, a lot of businesses. you'll get feedback. >> great feedback from businesses. they love the events we do. we operate almost five nights a week during the summer. >> perfect. tell me why should people come out here? i know it happened four years ago. why come out instead of being

home? >> it's a great community event. there is something different being in a space with other people as you see the march of nation as team usa comes through and you hear the crowd. it's a little different than being home watching it on tv. you mentioned people are like hey, i remember you. >> running into people you haven't seen, it's so natural in this area. >> the kickoff you have a red, white and blue festival. >> tonight is the kickoff. we have blues music, then the medal ceremony, then we transition to the opening ceremonies and then all day tomorrow from 11:00 to 8:00, the annual blues festival. >> a lot of stuff going on. putting redwood city on the map. everything starts at 6:00 at court house square. the best part, it's free. again, may be a few thousand people come, so get here early. live in downtown redwood city.
