6:00 am
yes, another big day in london as we begin the third day of competition. >> raj mathai is live in london where swimming is going to be really big again today. one bay area swimmer is celebrating a record breaking day. right? >> reporter: we had such a good time with her. you know, most of the time and rightfully so we talk about olympians we talk about the athletes. all of the hard work and dedication that it's taken to get to the point. we don't want to forget the parents and spouses. that happened with dana vollmer. away from the spotlight and the glare of the media. this is how they really celebrate. this is the real reward for winning or winning any medal. big hugs for dana vollmer t cal product. went to cal berkeley, hanging out with her parents and her husband, by the way her husband, andy grant, a former stanford swimmer who grew up in livermore so you have a cal/stanford household. it's not an easy road.
6:01 am
a lot of injuries that dana went through, a lot of dietary issues she went through. here she is now, a gold medalist and a world record holder. >> i'm still shaking all over. i'm seeing my family, i had not got tune see them yet. it was incredible. that made it set in. >> reporter: very nice, isn't it. speaking of the podium, yes, she gets the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly and sets the world record in doing so, so so far a lot of success for our bay area olympians, but first and foremost, dana vollmer with the gold, the former cal swimmer. monday in london, a lot of people are buzzing about the security issue. it is a serious issue but a lot of people are smiling as well. we go back to the opening ceremony and the big headline in london is who is the lady in red? here she is, she's walking with the indian olympic team as they walked in. the problem is she's not part of
6:02 am
the indian olympic team. she is a crasher. she crashed the party. she walked in with them. apparently she is a grad student from india studying in london. people are wondering how she got in and what she was doing at the opening ceremony. another hot topic on monday, all of those empty seats. have you noticed? a lot of emthety seats here at the olympic events. but the officials very embarrassed so what they are doing now is they are giving away a lot of tickets and inviting a lot of people from east london, kids and lower income kids to fill the seats. here is london's colorful mayor. >> we're doing much better than they did in sydney where they had a successful games. the first couple of days you have these bureaucrats who don't turn out to the seats that they are allocated.

>> reporter: that is boris johnson, london's mayor. we spent time with mayor johnson. for everyone that complains about the london olympics he said we quote, put a sock in it. it's wonderful. back to you in the bay area. >> direct and to the point. we like that very much. raj mathai, thank you very much. >> 6:04. a heads up for you. we're going to put up some of the results of the competitions from some of our bay area olympians. they have competed but those have not aired yet on nbc bay area. so if you don't want to know what happens we'll play some music while the results are up and when it stops it's safe to look at your television again.
6:04 am
>> that finishes the music. that will finish our look so now you may come back to television. we do have a major upset to tell you about. the women's gymnastics all around competition defending world champion jordyn wieber upstaged by her teammates gabby douglas and aly rasiman. wieber shaken when our cameras caught up with her after that program. i think we have a sound bite. >> i'm really happy that aly and gabby did their best today and they are going to be competing. it's a little bit of a disappointment. i'm happy i'll be helping out in finals. >> wieber considered a lock to make the all around finals, she
6:05 am
suffered from an age old olympic rule. despite her finishing fourth overall in the competition, the rules state that only the top two performers from each country actually advance. wieber did qualify for the floor exercise final. >> the uss men's water polo team had to fight for a victory winning 8-7 in its opening match. to pull out the win they had to rely on four former stanford players. to create olympic caliber players he preaches discipline, control and toughness and intelligence. that's not all. he says all of his players have something else in common. >> these guys have an amazing work ethic, not only do they work hard but it's an intelligent effort. they did go to stanford so we're coaching some very bright athletes extremely dedicated. >> the center is one of the sites hosting the junior

6:07 am
we stop clock at 9:00 a.m. you can see the low clouds. hugging that coastline a little bit lingering over san francisco. but that, too, will clear out quickly by about 10:00. clear in the city by the bay. you'll be able to hit 76 degrees in the bay side cities, rounding out at 82. first let's check on the drive. >> first we're watching the upper deck. for the bay bridge there is a stall. looks like it should be clearing but the backup has started at the toll plaza. now a look out to the east bay. we're showing some slowing for livermore. going to get worse because the earlier accident westbound 580 off 205 merge is in its final clearing. it's going to set these folks who are jammed up through livermore and the dublin interchange. san jose, northbound 101 you see slowing heading to 680.

6:09 am
construction company. he said that by the end of this week there will be at least 150 feet tall and people driving through this area will be able to look and say hey, that's starting to look like a stadium. this is what it's going to look like. it shows what their $1.1 billion baby will look like in time for the 2014 season. the new digs seat 68,500 fans, about 1500 less than candlestick but it's much larger in terms of square footage and more parking. that raising with the team and the mayor of santa clara look likes maybe around 20 minutes from now. reporting live in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> two titans to square off in court. that could have a big time impact on the smart phone and tablet markets. apple suing samsung claiming samsung's smart phones and
6:10 am

6:14 am
put in place. the stadium expected to open in the fall of 2014. >> a pair of tech titans squaring off in federal court in san jose. apple suing samsung electronics claiming the south korea company copied design elements of the iphone and ipad. >> stuck 150 feet in the air for two hours. a dozen people eager to experience the superman ride. christie smith is live. what's next for the newest attraction at the park? good morning. >> reporter: good morning. what a day for riders who came out to enjoy the park's newest roller coaster. you can see it, the highest part of the ride 150 feet in the air. the park on the website, they say they open about 10:30 this morning but when the superman ultimate flight ride will reopen is unclear according to a six flags spokesperson.
6:15 am
it won't happen until a complete inspection is done. it was 2:30 in the afternoon when the coaster stopped at the crest of the ride. a dozen riders sat for two hours. at least they were not upside down as firefighters were called in, a large crane that sits here on site was lifted up with a mechanic and firefighters. they delivered water and sun screen to the riders. they were prepared for something like this. apparently some riders tried to shake the ride to get it loose and going. that didn't work. a mechanic got it going and it rolled down to the ground safely no. one hurt. when it will reopen they don't know. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> not fun for those folks. >> we're going back to london to check some things out. yes, she is the most celebrated olympic swimmer in american olympic history. we're talking about natalie
6:16 am
coughlin. she is done competing now. >> raj mathai is live in london where he talked to coughlin about the decision to bench her in the relay finals. >> reporter: this is one of the strangest stories in a long time. we dealt with a lot of star athletes in the bay area. natalie among them but to get benched at the olympics, when you're a star, that's a strange one. we're trying to wrap our head around it. not just at the bay area but swimming fans across the country. what happened over the weekend in london that led to this. so natalie coughlin as you probably know in the relay finals over the weekend was taken off in the finals, she did swim in the preliminaries but her coach, her personal coach at cal now the team usa coach, decided to as a team effort take her off of the finals and rest her. basically bench her. that means she didn't race, she didn't get to the podium. she did win bronze a's long with her team though she didn't race. that's part of the rules. the down side, it's a
6:17 am
bittersweet story to possibly her final race as an olympian. >> there are a lot of factors that go into it. i think we were swimming pretty evenly, if you factor in our relay take-offs and everything. our times are pretty even. i think part of it is having the head coach be your personal coach. you don't want to cause a controversy and don't want any one to think she's giving me special favors so i think we're erring on the other side which i fully understand. regardless you have to stick with the decision and be supportive. >> been very up front and honest with us your career. disappointed how it went down? >> i'm -- it's hard to say. i'm just kind of disappointed how this year has been. >> reporter: it has been a tough year fortunately coughlin. she is going to come home with the bronze medal, number 12 of her career. most likely people say this would be her final olympics.
6:18 am
what a stand up woman she is. a class act, meeting us, talking about it and getting it off her chest. back to you. >> thanks for the latest. we'll check back with you later. >> tough for miss coughlin, handling it with dig any. >> i respect the fact that they have a personal connection so she opens up to our raj. >> hi, raj. >> we love having him out there live. you know, maybe you're trying to get to work. we have everything you need to know when it comes to top stories locally and weather and traffic as well. lots of excitement all week this week and next week as long as the summer games keep running on nbc bay area. a live look this morning at san jose, you can see we have a pretty good formation of the marine layer. i can tell you it's rather thin so once that sun does come out in full force as we head through the next hour it will burn off immediately. 54 degrees in concord, 57 in oakland and 61 in sunnyvale.
6:19 am

"the new york times" wondering if silicon valley is at the end of a bubble. >> this is shares of two former high flying companies come crashing down. scott mcgrew joins us. facebook at an all-time low. >> and zynga the other. mark zuckerberg has in the last few days lost a billion dollars a day on paper.
6:21 am
facebook will open at $23.73 a share, that makes the company worth $38 billion less than it was at its ipo. one of silicon valley's worst financial stories from a share point of view, a sign that investors have concerns about the future of facebook. share price tends to show what people think about a company's potential. we'll be watching facebook founder mark zuckerberg as i mentioned losing all of that money. we're going to talk about with general motors, that company firing its head of its marketing. remember, gm canceled its ads with facebook before the ipo. we said it was a cheap shot. seems that gm agreed. it fired its car company chief this morning. we'll have much more about the apple/samsung decision coming up in the next eight minutes.

6:25 am
lead. how much is unclear. and as we found, these warning labels are missing from the products that have the highest amounts of lead. >> have you seen it? >> no. >> the tags are attached to purses and shoes sold and sandals sold at big lots. prop 65 requires businesses to notify customers about significant chemicals in the products they purchase. for these the fine sprint warns the items may have lead known to cause cancer and birth defects. but shoppers we watched didn't notice the warnings. so we bought some of the bags and sandals and took them to a state certified lead assessor for testing. >> we want this problem taken care of. >> carolyn is the director of research for the center for environmental health fighting to get manufacturers to lose the labels and the lead altogether. >> you're car carrying your purse, every time you touch at
