the swimmers are dominating, winning eight medals in the first two days. gold was won by dana vollmer. savannah was there and got her reaction after the race. that had to be exciting. >> yes. my voice is hoarse from screaming so loud. she did so great, broke a world record. we'll catch up with her. and the men's gymnastics team have never won team all-around in a nonboycotted games. they are entering tonight in first place. and that surprise drama on the women's side with jordyn wieber is coming up. >> also, a woman you may have seen during the opening ceremony making headlines worldwide. we are not talking about the queen, but the mustry woman who crashed the parade of nations walking right alongside the indian flag bearer. details on who she is and how she ended up in the stadium that night. >> and later on, if there were a gold medal for humiliation,

we'll know who won it. today at the track to try the olympic sport of race walking. maybe you think it sounds easy. but it's difficult. >> how about the color of al's suit. >> yours wasn't great either. >> i know. we begin with olympic highlights of the last day. natalie, good morning. >> good morning. as they said, the first two days of competition have been filled with thrilling victories and heartbreaking disappointments. >> michael phelps and ryan lochte, a part of this relay. >> big surprises so far in the pool. sunday night the men's 4 x 100 relay with superstars michael phelps and ryan lochte leading the way. >> i think the americans are set up well. >> the u.s. started strong but lochte couldn't hold the lead in the final second. >> france will outtouch the americans and lochte. >> the u.s. walking a away with silver. france taking gold. >> michael phelps -- >> on saturday phelps and lochte

today, 17-year-old phenom missy franklin competes in her first individual finals -- the 10 100-meter backstroke. more drama in women's gymnastics. a shocker for 17-year-old jordyn wieber. >> and jordyn wieber is out of the all-around. >> wieber failed to qualify for the women's all-around finishing behind gabby douglas and surprise contender ali raisman who took the top spot. >> it's a disappointment but i'm happy to help out the team. >> tuesday the team goes for its first gold since atlanta in 1996. u.s. men's gymnastics team goes for a medal tonight. there is still a glow from friday's opening ceremony watched by more than 40 million

24-year-old broke the world record in the 100-meter butterfly. i caught up with her. you said your knees are shaking still? >> i'm shaking all over. seeing my family, uh haven't gotten to see them yet. it was incredible. that really made it set in. i was so in shock. tearing up, hugging my mom, my husband and my dad. it's such an incredible feeling. >> it's not enough you won a gold medal. you set a world record at the same time. >> my first world record. i don't think it's set in yet that i'm the fastest butterflyer ever. it's crazy. the training i have been able to do. everyone's support. i wouldn't be here without everyone that helped me. >> when you think about this long road you have been on it started when you were 16 years old in athens at the olympics. you are a at the height of your

sport. >> just an incredible journey. going from winning a gold medal in athens and then missing the team. i feel like it took missing the team for me to really change my mental approach to swimming, my training. i'm finally healthy. mentally and physically. just really loving to race, feeling confident in who i am and my family had a huge part in that. >> did you really lose your swimming cap halfway through the race? >> i did. it's never happened before. slowly but surely with every stroke the cap moved further and further back and it fell off. i told the official there's a cap in there somewhere. someone has to find it. >> amazing it didn't distract you. >> i think it was a good distraction. i wasn't thinking about my legs hurting. but i didn't have a good finish. maybe it did distract me a little bit. hard to have a perfect race. there is always something i feel i can get better at. having been that fast and know i

can still get better is exciting. >> this has to be close to a perfect race. >> pretty close. i was calm the first 50. i know the second 50 is my strength. no one comes home faster in the world than i do. tapping into the rhythm and the feel of the water that i have trained so much and charging home. every time i breathed i could hear the crowd. i was hoping when i had the bad finish, oh, i knew i won, but did i get the world record? to have them both come together is incredible. >> we'll see dana back in the pool on wednesday. it's 7:09. here's matt. >> thank you. natalie coughlin made history on wednesday when the u.s. women took the bronze in the women's freestyle relay. it was natalie's fourth overall medal tying her as the most decorated american female olympian. natalie, good morning. >> good morning. >> that's a big deal. >> it is.

i still haven't had time -- [ cheers and applause ] >> thank you, guys. i haven't had time to process it. i earned this medal in a strange way. >> explain it to people who may have watched the finals of the event and not seen you there. >> yes. the way it works is you have a prelim relay. u can put any four girls on that. they need to qualify top eight. i was a member of the prelim relay. >> swam the fastest leg, i believe. >> i did. it was the coach's decision. i had a very fast relay takeoff. that made them nervous. i don't know. but i was supportive of the four up there. they did a fantastic job. >> supportive that there were four other women who swam for the fienals and the bronze. you had to have mixed emotions. how did the coach break the news that you wouldn't be in the final but you still get the bronze. >> i was part of the relay so i still get the bronze. my coach told me.

i think a lot of it is she wants to be conservative because she's my personal coach and the head coach. she told me and i was fine with it. a lot of coaches were supportive of me. it's a ee's a hard thing. >> you have 11 other medals. have you ever held a medal and not stood on the podium? this is a first time for you. >> this is the first time i haven't been on the medal podium myself. very unceremoniously, terri just gives it to me. in a meeting, of course. it's strange. >> i asked before, are you done here. and you don't know the answer. >> i don't. >> you could still swim in another event. >> i could. there are a lot of factors that play into that. one of the great things about team usa in swimming is we have so much depth and talent. that being said, i'm not trying to force myself onto a relay. i'm there. it's 100% the coach's decision.

>> i don't have to tell you, 12 ties you with sarah and jenny for most decorated female olympian. one more break it is record. >> right. >> when you look at swimming in another event or even down the road to rio, do you have new thoughts about that? >> i -- you know, my thoughts change on a daily basis. i absolutely love swimming. i'm going to continue to train and to be fit. and so my thing is if i'm healthy enough to still compete, why not? because i love it. but i go back and forth. and right now i'm just trying to focus on this week. >> extraordinary accomplishment. >> thank you. >> savor it and thanks for coming by this morning, natalie. it's good to see you. let's switch gears and go to the other natalie with the top stories of the morning. >> good morning, everyone. colorado shooting suspect james holmes returns to court today as prosecutors file formal charges against him. legal experts say holmes will not face additional charges after a pregnant woman wounded in the shooting suffered a miscarriage over the weekend.

central to the case will likely be the question of whether or not holmes is sane. palestinian leaders are slamming mitt romney following his fund-raising visit to israel. romney sparked outrage by suggesting that he would move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem calling it israel's capital city. palestinian leaders say the comment is, quote, unacceptable. all foreign embassies in israel are located in tel aviv due to the ondoing controversy about the status of jerusalem. today romney arrives in poland on the final leg of his overseas campaign trip. a kent state university student has been arrested after tweeting that he was going to, quote, shoot up his college campus. 19-year-old william caberna was arrested at his parents' home sunday and charged with inducing panic and aggravated menacing. he appears in court today. now let's head to wall street. cnbc's kayla tausch is at the new york stock exchange. >> good morning, natalie. wall street is starting the week on an optimistic note.

there were other stars as well, the athletes, including our own team usa cheered on by first lady michelle obama. and, of course, the olympic flame, lit by members of britain's next generation of athletes. it was a night full of powerful sounds and images, a all of which signalled that the games had begun. there is another person in the opening ceremony getting a lot of attention. a woman wearing a red shirt and blue pants marching alongside india's flag bearer. the only problem, she wasn't part of the delegation. the crasher is believed to be a volunteer from an earlier part of the ceremony. organizers say the woman was never a security threat. but indian officials are demanding an investigation. >> i guess she got caught up in the spirit. >> she did, for sure. very good and windy here. >> al, we'll give the weather

but after a stumble on the balance beam sunday, weiber failed to make the all-around final. her greatest competition not a foreign challenger but her own teammate and friend 18-year-old ali raisman who pushed her tally above wieber. >> it was hard. of course, i wanted that spot, but, of course, i wanted aly to do best and for her team also. >> wieber left the stadium sobbing. the top finisher all around is, as predicted, russian victorian komova. as for the u.s. men, they head into tonight's team final in the lead. so far topping not only china and great britain, but expected top dogs japan. danel lava. >> these are critical for danel. >> qualified for the all-around. the most memorable moment came

from brit louis smith. his sensational 15.8 pommel horse score brought him to tears. >> look at louis smith. he looks like he's overcome with what's happening for himself and his team. >> our olympic gymnastics analysts. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> put it in perspective. jordyn wieber is the reigning world champ. for her not to make the individual all-around finals, how much of a shocker was it? >> it was actually a big shocker. she comes in, as you mentioned, the reigning world champion. she's one of the toughest competitors. she was great. i have to say there were some scores i was very surprised with on jordyn. floor and beam. >> i have to say she was very gracious to her two teammates

gabby and aly, who are actually going in the all-around finals. >> the emphasis is on team gold. will this affect that at all in terms of it just being a distraction for the team? you know what? i don't think so. what i would bet on is that jordyn wieber will come out for the women's team finals. she will be unbelievable. that will be her moment. she is a tremendous champion. has won just about every single title. and i firmly believe that she'll anchor the team in the team finals. >> well, absolutely. she's too proud. and take a look at what we've been saying all year long. she has hit everything. she has done everything that this team has asked her to do, and she does not want her moment to end like it did the other night. >> i know rules are rules, but you have to scratch your head a little bit, okay, because jordyn wieber did finish fourth overall. yet because each country only gets to send two, in effect, other gymnasts from other

countries who placed worse than she did will make it to the final. >> yeah, it's a bad rule. in my opinion, it's crazy. if you look at the 24th gymnast who qualified, it's not even -- not to do any dissing or anything, but not in the same category as jordyn wieber. i just dove you know, it's all about giving opportunity to other athletes, other countries to help develop and grow. >> sure. >> but, you know, when potentially if she was just in, she could easily win the whole thing. i think it's a bad rule. >> it's sad they won't get a chance to see the world champion. i say with the very few athletes competing in the all-around these days, they should open up the floodgates and let them all in. >> i've only got 30 seconds left, and i want to get to the men. they did great. is it theirs to lose at this point? >> it's not theirs to lose. the team that was the favorites were the japanese but they were horrific in qualifying. >> and the chinese. >> the reigning olympic champions. the usa have a team spirit

ever in the synchro event. how does it feel? >> amazing. dream come true. >> you have to coordinate every little thing. it's all about synchronizing every maneuver. how long have you been working together and diving with each other? >> we have been working really hard since this past fall. a little less than a year. we have been flying back and forth traveling to different countries to compete. we have been together about every two weeks or so this year, working really hard. >> the chinese have dominated in this e event. your expectations, what were they going into this? >> i just wanted to have the performance of a lifetime. i did that and ended up with the silver. i couldn't be happier. >> not only do you have to synch up the moves on the board. you spend so much time together

you must have some personal chemistry as well. i know you have a shared love of rubber duckies. >> yes, we do. >> the tie that binds. >> we also get along well outside the pool. we watch the same tv shows and hang out. we just mesh in and out of the pool. >> you synchronize everything. >> will we see you four years from now in rio as a team? >> i'm retired. >> no! we won't allow it. >> i retired last night. >> you went out in style. congratulations. >> you can always pull a michael jordan. >> always good for a comeback. >> congratulations. >> thank you. welcome back to london's olympic park where the u.s. swim team has already racked up an impressive eight medals. the first female swimming head coach for the u.s. and ryan lochte's personal coach gregg troy. congratulations already. gregg, i will start with you. ryan had a great weekend. is that a feeling of relief or accomplishment or both? >> a little bit of both. he did a tremendous start to the meet for him. he's had a big program. a lot of events left. hopefully it continues. >> i have to ask you about this little bit of controversy when he wore the mouthpiece, the stars & stripes grill on the medal stand. what happened? >> i'm not sure exactly.

i think there was a ruling that they asked him not to. it's been his trademark. he has a couple of them. >> let's talk about the men's relay. it was so exciting. the men had the lead for the first three legs. you put in lochte to swim the anchor portion of the meet. what happened? was it just the french swimmer having the swim of his life? >> he had a great swim. the end of their relay was fantastic. we probably overlooked them a little bit. the australians on paper were the best team. we wanted to be in the lead, run the race we wanted to run. >> i want to ask about michael phelps. saturday, not his best day. sunday he looked great. do you feel good about where he is in terms of his swimming? >> oh, yeah. michael is in a good place. he responded like a champion. he was great in the relay. >> turning to the women, you are the personal coach for natalie

coglin. you had leah neil swim instead in the final. >> we had to look at relay exchanges and take a lot of different considerations. i told the young ladies it was their job to get us a lane in the final. the coaches had to make a tough call and we did. >> missy franklin is such a phenom. she'll swim tonight? >> two events. >> how are you managing her? she's so new to this. she has so much expectation weighing on her. how is she doing? >> her personal coach todd smith is working with her. using the veterans, natalie, rebecca. they are helping her out. >> i guess i buried the lead here. you mentioned dana. my goodness. she won gold, broke a world record. that's got to have exceeded expectations. >> yeah.

she's had a great year. put in a lot of hard work. it's exciting to see her come through on a big stage. >> i know you guys have to stay objective but every olympics seems to create new stars and new household names. who do you think is emerging so far as the star of the games? >> it's early to tell. missy has been tremendous. on the men's side, ryan and michael are always names. there are a lot of young guys. matt grevers is outstanding. >> you have a deep bench. great to have you here. congratulations on your success so far. we look forward to more. thank you. >> thank you. >> much more from here in london including the pub foods to avoid. first this is "today" on nbc.

the people here in london love their pub food. here to spoil all their fun is our favorite guy, david zinczenko, of course the author of the "eat this, not that" series. david, welcome to london. good to see you. >> great to be here. >> are you going to come here and bum out everybody on the world stage? >> this is a dangerous segment to do. i may get romneyed out of here. i'm going to be very careful and just show you gold caliber favorites of classic british pub fare. >> and because we're not talking about things coming from chain restaurants, we don't have accurate calorie counts on some of these dishes. we're going to do it differently. >> close approximations. >> let's start with drinks. you say a pint of imperial stout can pack 350 calories. >> yes. this is the otherwise known as the official training drink of henry viii. i'm not sure if we should drink it or kayak through it.

imperial means high in alcohol content. it's over 10%. that's where a lot of the calories come from. be careful with the imperial stout. i would go for something a little bit more pale-colored. >> to work it off you have to do an hour and 25 minutes of weight lifting. >> for doing a couple of these. >> members of our crew want to know if you were to lift another pint of imperial stout could that be considered weightlifting? >> that could do it. you have to do about 1,080 reps. that's fine. >> but you say ale is less fattening. >> yeah. it's pale-colored. the alcohol is 4% to 6%. so you're having the alcohol content and halving the calories. >> fish and chips. what's the calorie count here? >> the best argument for national health service i've ever seen. this is 1,500 calories. >> so a whole day. >> it's 90 grams of fat. one gram of fat is nine calories. you have 800 calories coming from the deep fryer.

okay? so that's your biggest issue here. >> to work that off we would have to do three hours of swimming? >> almost three hours of swimming. yeah. so phelps and lochte would sink right to the bottom. >> shockingly you say pot roast with mashed potatoes, less fattening. >> about 690. you're saving 800 calories right there by going with this british favorite. >> next up -- what's in shepherd's pie? >> looks like a pot roast topped with a mashed potato crust. >> how many calories? >> 1,800 calories. this should make you feel sheepish. >> you would have to spend a half a day -- i got it -- playing doubles tennis to work that off. >> yes, you would. it's three full days of saturated fat. that's just wrong. >> do you mean to tell me the healthier alternative to shepherd's pie is a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich? >> definitely. you save 1,200 calories.

or the warm weather favorite called a plowman. we don't have it here. they're both about the same. that's another classic british pub favorite. >> how about this one? bangers and mash. >> also known as the nuclear option. >> mashed potatoes, sausage and gravy. what's that going to do to you? you? >> 800 calories, 60 grams of fat. a full day's worth of saturated fat and an awful lot of sodium. >> if you want to work that off you would have to play one hour and 23 minutes -- who calculated this? >> of beach volleyball. if you're going to eat this, please do not wear the bikini bottoms. or maybe you could just watch it for two hours and sweat it off. >> instead of this, you want people to eat roast pork and the boiled potatoes. >> you're going to save 500 calories with this one swap. >> finally, the britts love, i don't, the britts love liver and onions. what's the big problem in terms of fat and sodium there?

>> just a ton of it. 737 calories. 54 grams of fat. a full day's worth of sodium. you would have to play two hours and eight minutes of badminton. this is a reason for the lambs to be silent. definitely. >> the alternative is? >> once again, roast leg of lamb. it's roasted. the fat's falling away. mint jelly there, a big british fave. which gives it flavor without all the calories. >> the gold medal for bumming people out at the olympic games, david zinczenko.
