between 880 and high street which is around the coliseum and 980, past the downtown area. no major slowing. you lose a couple of lanes. that's okay. a live look at the toll plaza. the reason it's okay is because of the light volume of traffic. there is the focus point. not much focus but it's not blurry. back to you. >> thank you. >> we start with great news, a south bay athlete has a lot to celebrate this morning. guess what, so do her friends. >> marti malloy won the bronze in london. the first american to medal in judo. >> it feels surreal for me. i surprised myself in the final when i won, so it's still a mix of happiness and unbelievableness. it feels really good. >> good for her. malloy's teammates and coaches were glued to the tv as she put her hometown on the map. her training partner said he

hoped for gold but bronze is just as sweet. >> i know how good she is. to be able to see her do this on a world stage. >> the 26-year-old malloy has been working on her moves since she was 6 years old. her coaches say she knew how to do it well and he are happy her hard work paid off. congratulations once again. the u.s. men's gymnastics team had a disappointing finish monday after dominating a qualifying round. the team placed fifth, plagued by falls and stumbles, paving the way for china to win gold. japan ended up taking home silver and great britain took home the bronze. team usa hoped for a different result but tried to stay positive. >> not super happy. we didn't do what we wanted to do but at the same time we started off slow and we had our mistakes but we never ever lost that fight. we never lost that usa spirit. >> we're young guys on this

team. this is our first olympic experience. nerves definitely played a factor. all we can do is take the experience, we're young so we got another four years in us. >> usa women's team is looking for its first gold in nearly two decades. the fab five weren't even in preschool yet. one wasn't even born when the last u.s. gymnastics team won the gold in atlanta. we're going to see if jordyn wieber can overcome the disappointment of not qualifying for the all around final. i bet she does. women's gymnastic team finals begin at 8:00 a.m. pacific time. watch all of the action tonight on nbc starting at 8:00. >> good luck to the ladies. after a tough start for michael phelps he is hoping to make history today winning his 18th olympic gold medal. his signature event, the 200 meter butterfly f. he medals he will tie for the most olympic

bay area athletes and there's a lot of them and a look at swimming's rivalries, head to nbc bay area. >> turning to other news, the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar will be back in court. bob redell is live with why the lamar family will not be there. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. sierra lamar's parents will not be at the hall of justice this morning because they do not want to hear the suspect in their daughter's murder utter the words not guilty when asked how he pleads. he did not enter a plea in his first appearance shortly after his arrest and it's possible he might not do that again, might not enter a plea during his appearance this morning. our legal analyst says his attorney possibly could ask for another delay to give them more

time to prepare a defense. garcia torres has been charged with the abduction and murder of the 15-year-old girl who disappeared in march near her home. the challenge for the prosecution and according to our analyst is proving this case without a body and as far as we know without a weapon and crime scene. the challenge for the defense, explaining how her dna ended up in his car and how his dna allegedly ended up on her clothes. >> is there an innocent explanation for why garcia torres' dna may be on sierra lamar's possessions. that's going to be critical. and how much dna was located and how could it have been transferred in a way that doesn't equal murder? >> reporter: the klass kids foundation is hosting searches still taking place every wednesday and saturday in morgan hill. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 4:37. the oakland police department is

close to a federal takeover after a new report concludes that court ordered reform efforts are, quote, near stagnant. the new report finds the document still is not up to par. it concludes the department made some progress in its negotiated agreement to resolve the decade-old allegations of police misconduct. but one of the attorneys overseeing the agreement says reforms are not coming fast enough. >> if they can't come up with a plan that will work, we're going to ask the judge to propose a plan that will make them work. if that means eliminating authority for people who haven't done their job, well, let the chips fall where they may. >> the oakland police chief says he is working closely with the federal monitor, city administrator and the mayor to bring his department into full compliance. >> the time 4:38. christina loren says it will be cooler but i think you mentioned a few moments ago if you're not needing to go anywhere, grab a blanket. >> yeah.

keep watching "today in the bay." good morning to you. we love waking up with you every morning. a great looking day shaping up. if you were hot yesterday we're taking your temperatures down. we hit 98 degrees yesterday, not the 98 degrees that we like the boy band. throughout the day today, i'm shaving about 10 degrees off of your east bay high. 56 to start out in san francisco. throughout the day today, the marine layer will push back out to sea but it's going to take a couple hours longer than yesterday so that means you have to wait until noon for sunshine in the city by the bay. it will be out in full force for the second half of the day to warm you up to 69 degrees in san francisco today, 78 degrees beautiful conditions on the east shore in fremont and 83 right here in san jose. your seven-day reveals changes swinging you up and down all week long. we'll take you through the forecast. 4:39. let's check your drive. >> we're going to take to you the edge of my sensor data here

at the altamont pass. 205 is off to the right side of your screen out of tracy and stockton. there is an accident and it's having a major effect on 205 blocking all but one lane in the westbound commute direction. if you are expecting someone from stockton, there will be a delay. i'm hearing conflicting reports, may be 5:30 to 7:00 before they open that up. until that happens we have traffic held up in that area that may make things through altamont and livermore easier for 580 westbound. we'll see how this plays out because that will affect the traffic into the tri-valley. a live look out there and see how things are for oakland. 880 northbound, an easy drive to the construction zone into downtown without delays. and a look across the bay, the golden gate bridge, you know what, i don't know if we can do that. look at that. the control room pulled it up. no problem. it's a live shot. trust me, there are no cars.

soon. christina loren says it's going to cool off. a little more manageable. >> witnesses telling their story about the aftermath of an incident on a party bus that left a woman dead a. family came up upon the scene along highway 17 saturday night minutes after two women fell from the party bus during a fight. the family called police after finding natasha nolan dead and the 20-year-old woman injured. >> i find her laying down and i had the sweatshirt and i flipped over my head and laid it on her and her head is facing the freeway and i'm down there and you know, looking at her. 911's coming. >> she says the injured girl tried to tell her what happened but only remembered having her hair pulled before stumbling out of the bus. the chp is trying to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy but says that everyone on the party bus was intoxicated. >> the suspect in the colorado

movie theater massacre facing 24 counts of murder among more than 100 other charges. james holmes appearing in court yesterday. he's now charged twice for each of the 12 people killed in that shooting rampage, one for first-degree murder, and one for murder with extreme indifference. holmes is also charged with 116 counts of attempted murder for a total of 142 charges. at this point he is not due back in court until november. by then prosecutors should have decided whether or not to seek the death penalty. >> the drew peterson murder trial getting under way at a chicago courtroom today. peterson was charged with drowning his third wife back in 2004. he has pleaded not guilty saying her death was an accident. the 58-year-old former police officer was charged only after the dappearance of his fourth wife that happened in 2007. peterson is still a suspect in that case but prosecutors have yet to file charges.

nasdaq down 12 to close at 2945. and as you mentioned, mark your calendars, reports say apple scheduled an event september 12 to unveil a major product. analysts speculate it's probably the iphone 5. reports say apple may show off the new mini pad with a 7 inch screen. apple of course isn't saying anything publicly. watch shares of den a driia. the firm reported a quarterly loss and announced it's closing one manufacturing plant in new jersey. the company is cutting more than 600 full-time jobs and contractor jobs are 41% of the work force, on top of 500 layoffs announced last year following poor sales of its prostate cancer drug. back to you guys. have a great day. >> hampton pierson, you as well. >> two words describe him. informative and dapper.

4:48. christina loren joining us. a nice day ahead. >> he sets the bar for all of the men out there. >> a lot of pressure. thanks. >> trying to find your pinstripe suit, you can wear that suit in the city as temperatures will come down by about 10 degrees from yesterday's highs in some cases. i think san francisco, you're going to drop by 5 to 8 degrees making for a cool day, not breaking into 70s. temperatures are crisp out there with 62 in san jose, 61 in livermore and 55 degrees, good morning to you in wine country, napa, really great start up there. as we head throughout the day high pressure is in control. weakening a little bit. we're going to get this area of low pressure that rides through over to the north of us. in the pacific northwest we head flew the afternoon. a pretty strong on shore flow so we expect plenty of low clouds to start. 60s and 70s bayside and the coast. 80s and 90s inland but we're not talking about the upper 90s like we saw yesterday.

more like 91 down from 98 in livermore. by tomorrow we'll ramp those back up as high pressure moves right back in. so winds are going to play a factor but that will make it feel more comfortable as we head through this evening, if you want to sit on the porch and enjoy a beautiful evening in san jose it's going to be comfortable, temperatures in the 70s. by about about 6:00 to 7:00, breezy conditions. and so you want to keep that in mind. the sea breeze will be strong at the coast. yeah, maybe up to 40 miles per hour with gusts later on today. we'll watch for that. so in the 90s, then the 80s as we head through the end of the week into the weekend. talking about a comfortable start to next week. however, it's going to be pretty hot inland until we hit this friday. 4:50. back to you. >> thank you very much. >> back to the london games. no secret the athletes hav to put in a lot of work to get ready but truth be told the families also had to be there. >> talking to some parents of

and help jordan be healthy. >> as in jordyn wieber. >> i went to westminster abbey and lit a candle. >> from devine intervention to the family business, greg doesn't just pray for his son. he coaches him. >> i keep a pretty good balance because i feel my students i keep a clear picture. on the strip he's the student and then when he comes off the strip the mask comes off and i'm the dad. >> he takes on separate roles when he's home as opposed to when he's coaching me. having him as two different roles, i trust completely his kind of an incredible feeling. >> dad, a two-time olympian, alex making his debut. there could be another in the fencing mix. >> my sister's coming up as well. she is three years younger. hopefully she will try for rio and maybe we'll have two kids on the team. that will be great. >> that's a great story. as we know, dads often coach their sons but at the olympics
