look closer. these are the hands that work the fields and pick your food. and they belong to children. >> how long have you been doing this? >> like seven years. since i was 8 years old, until now. >> listen closely. >> you were 11? >> i was 11. >> to their voices. >> 11 years old? >> yes. >> what's the hardest part of it? >> some say they worked when they were 11, 10. one teen says he started in the fields of mexico, when he was 8, before he moved here to work almost two years ago. >> when i started at the age of eight it was difficult i weighed 55 poundses. >> i have cuts on my fingers, really tired. it was really hot. and i didn't really like, but it was worth it to help my mom. >> what's the hardest crop to pick? >> tomatoes. >> why?

>> the mower, the bugs. >> peaches. i love peaches. >> they took me to the peaches. i used the gloves, because with the stuff the peaches have, they would stick to me. >> and you do that all day? >> three hours. >> you don't get a lot of break. and you can't be talking. >> the hard work and long hours has some parents doing everything they can to keep their kid as way from the field. kids like carmen. that's why carmen's mother force her to stay in school and away from the fields. >> she doesn't want me to go through what she goes through. she says it's painful. hard work, every night i massage her back so she can feel better in the morning. >> and go back and do it again? >> yes. >> i told her when i get older i'm going to buy her a house.

>> the kids in the fields also have dreams. hoping the money they earn will help them break out of this cycle and live a better life. >> what do you want to do? >> now i want to be an artist. >> a mechanic. i like working with tools. >> i want to do so many things. >> it's absolutely legal for a small farmer to hire a 6-year-old to pick blueberries. >> reporter: jane authored this article. >> i saw children as young as nine years old picking cucumbers. they told me they started work as young as seven years old. and children consistently said they started working full time, adult hours at age 11 or 12. >> reporter: current u.s. labor law allows for child labor to exist in agriculture. low wages mean these families need more workers in the field to make ends meet.

an economic necessity that continues for generations. >> the whole family, me, my mom, my sister. >> you were all in the fields? >> yes, it was hard, because you have to work in the sun. and there's. >> there's 80-year-old people, kids working in the fields just to help their parents. i think that's not fair. >> while many american teens, even myself worked jobs as a teenager, mowing the lawn, waiting tables or bagging groceries. this is full time work. nine or ten hours a day, sometimes seven days a week in 100 degree heat. almost every young person we talked to told us they were born here, meaning they are u.s. citizens and none of them worked on small family farms. we reached out to a dozen grower organizations, food processors and producers to also get their views on this issue. none of them would comment for this story. jessi jessica, janelle? >> it is heartbreaking to see the grueling work they do.

sylvia is accused of tricking into a real estate ponzi scheme. >> she would have a new lie every day as to why the money wasn't there. >> she lied to these people. >> the district attorney says she convinced investors to loan money to the homeowners in exchange for monthly interest payments. she took the cash and spent it on luxury cars, expensive clothes and a home remodel. >> a conartist's expertise is in exploiting trust, and the evidence is that miss silvey exploited the trust of people at both ends of these deals. >> investors are left with little hope of retrieving their money. it was a painful lesson and she's concerned there could be other victims out there. >> there's no boundaries, that's the sad part. she could steal from anybody, didn't matter.

>> silvey is being held on bail. her attorney is investigating the charges against his client and has no further comment. kimberly terry nbc bay area news. >> investigators are trying to find out how a fire started ee los gatos that ended up burning cars and trees. it occurred this evening between the train tracks and a row of apartments. the fire appears suspicious. the police chief says he has no intention of resigning. despite calls for a vote of no confidence from some of his officers. those officers say they're frustrated with the way the chief is running the department and they've lost faith in his leadership. police officers association board is expected to consider a vote of no confidence at its tuesday meeting next week. in the interim, the city manager is the on person who has the power to fire more, says her support for him remains strong.

years old, just a couple years ago, she left her home, left her family in virginia, and moved to iowa to train at a better gymnastics facility. the commitment these girls have are amazing here. just a couple days ago, we spent time with the entire team usa gymnastics. they're growing up right in front of our faces, really. gabby thrilled with the team gold medal she won. and now gold medal number two. bottom line, she was flawless in her performance. her individual performance and really if you saw it right here on our coverage, there was no debate. her parents, coaches, teammates and everyone around the world looking on, witnessing the birth of this new american superstar. she becomes the first ever african-american to win a gymnastics gold. she wants to be a role model for all gymnasts. >> i feel amazing right now. and god has given me this opportunity to represent him, and given me this awesome talent. it feels amazing.

to represent the usa and my coaches. i'm speechless right now. >> she is speechless, we'll see gabby back in the bay area next month. september 8th, she'll be at the hp pavilion in san jose. kerri walsh, this is a transition part of the tournament. tomorrow is the elimination round. we talk about kerri walsh and misty may-treanor, think of them like a married couple. they've had some personal differences, they go to couples counselling to make sure everything is running smoothly. they've won back to back gold medals and are looking for gold medal number three. at one point they broke up, but they reunited for london. >> i called her and said, am i going to do this? she said, no my heart's not in it.

isolated 40s, 50s in movado. let's get you to the sky camera network. we're on fog watch tonight. it's the worst fog we've had in about 6 days pushing throughout downtown. and that fog is going to be extending into the morning hours, which may produce delays at sfo. back in london, we saw wrath, we're getting a look at the stadium. there's a lot more activity you can see in that picture. that's because athletics and track and field gets going as we head into friday. we saw them testing out some lights and it's quite busy here at the current moment. we have a changing forecast for london we'll have here in a moment. what we're tracking is cloud cover off to the north. it's way far away. any sign of rainfall is about 15 to 2,000 miles out here. what we'll be tracking over the next 72 hours is generating. it's not going to produce any widespread rainfall or anything

like that, but it will keep this cooling breeze in place for the coastline, it looks like it will be strong enough to extend over to the east and south bay. we're going to knock temperatures down a bit at the coastline as we head through the next 48 hours. also here, the interior valleys, 70s to 80s. getting to the 90s to 100s we've had the last three or four days. 48 in santa rosa to start, 53 in oakland. let's get you the daytime highs for friday. numbers go down about 3 to 5 degrees. 70 in palo alto, back to the east bay. 89 in danville. 83 in the castro valley. 73 in oakland, we talked about changes on the london forecast. a few possible showers for friday, temperatures near 70, athletics get going as we head through the next three days and here's what to watch for our coverage. about a 50 to 60% chance that
