it is a packed saturday in olympic park on this saturday afternoon. welcome back. time mow for live women's springboard diving. the semifinal round. here are ted robinson and cynthia potter. >> the women's three meter springboard competition at these games is a three-day event. this is day two semifinals. those are the standings after three rounds. the story today, be in the top 12. those will advance to the finals to be contested here tomorrow. the winner of the olympic trials, cassidy krug, a 27-year-old born and raised in pittsburgh, a graduate of stanford. she survived a about of nerves in the prelims yesterday to

advance. cynthia has been much stronger today. >> yeah, she's been steadier. looks like she's had a chance to get those nerves under control and just do what she does best. >> and this competition, it's survive, and there's no carryover of points, so if you had sub par dives yesterday, as cassidy krug did, there is no effect today. >> cassidy is on a lot better than she was yesterday in the preliminaries. she did not hit this entry. she was having a lot of trouble unfolding out of her dives and going in the water vertically. not today. this dive is, i would say, a point and a half better than she did yesterday. she should receive at least eights on this dive, maybe 8.5. . >> you see the scores. the two high and two low scores are thrown out. those are in red. the surviving scores there, all

mother cynthia potter used to take down in your day. >> every now and then. her mother was olympic champion in 1980. and my cohort megan meyer and myself, we were on the olympic team as well as chris shuttle, that she stole our olympic gold medal. but her daughter is a very fine diver, a reverse two and a half. a beautiful control point. doesn't control the entry. maybe she needs a little bit of that chinese entry magic. >> she's looking to be a bubble diver headed to the final round. she was in 11th plaes. the second american in this competition, her second olympics, christina loukas from chicago. grew up right around wrigley field. she has 27 family and friends, members of her family here. >> and christina is diving

this is he zi. leg is wrapped heavily today. was not for the prelims. >> her entries have really improved since round two. did a dive for eight and a halves out of a score of ten in round three. and this entry, once again, she knows how to get through the water, even though i didn't think her toes were point sod beautifully in the air, she doesn't have as good of form as her teammate. >> breaking news. we actually saw a splash from her in the second-round dive. i mean, a real splash. well, the heavy favorite in this event is wu minxia. she could match the all-time record with a fourth gold and match the women's record with a sixth medal. >> oh, what a beautiful entry,

a pretty good dive! >> that's my favorite family, by the way. they help us identify them. i love that. >> they are all ukked out, and they should be. the 17-year-old doing a dive in the last round of the semifinals to try and put some pressure on the field. she was about six points out of the top 12. she needs some 7.5s or above. >> she said she wanted to remember the moment, so she turned around and looked at it all. it was brilliant. and this is the second great britain diver, it's a little opposite. 27-year-old rebecca gallantree in her second olympics. not likely to advance. >> unlikely because she is in the last spot presently going into this last round.

she's in 18th place. she just did not have a very good semifinals at all. she only received 7s on one dive she did, and this one will not receive 7s. you need to count on 7s and above to make the top 12 in the olympic games in this contest. >> you've heard all about team gb. there it is. gallantree, that score will not get her into the finals. starling, though, is going to have some nerve racking moments because she is on the bubble. this is a second olympic games for dieckow, a 27-year-old from germany.

from everyone at enterprise, fifty million thanks. . last conversations with christina loukas and her coach ken armstrong. loukas has been there before. she was in the finals in beijing. cassidy krug, the united states diver, in her first olympic games. eight years ago, she was at athens and she was a runner for us. our program is pretty good, isn't it? >> i'll say. >> of course, cassidy is from a diving father. her father julian a longtime diving coach at the university of pittsburgh. her mom is known as the brains of the operation. is also a diving coach. >> coaches the club team and a lot of the younger drivers in

pittsburgh. >> and her coach has challenged her to come up with one good dive to take to tomorrow. >> oh, yes. that was a good takeoff. and rick is such a perfectionist. he knows diving so well. he'll say well, you went just a little bit too far out in the middle of the pool. but she's not in jeopardy in any way, shape, or form of not making the top 12. in fact, she's going to be, i believe, in the top five or six going into the finals. see how fast they go through the water? that's called a swim. >> and for cassidy krug, this is just a relief. none of the nervousness or drama that was in the prelim dives. so here is laura sanchez. seems to be safe as well in seventh place.

>> yes, she has a real good feel for vertical. one of the things -- and i remember writing this down in 2008, that a lot of the u.s. divers had trouble finding vertical and an abundance of splash, and that was keeping them maybe off of the podium at times. and some of that has really been worked on and cleared up. you see a little splash from sanchez. >> all right, laura sanchez in her third olympics. that score is going to put her through to the finals. splash is something that anybody who watches diving, this is the most visible means of assessing the sport, so we put a splashometer. >> this is fun, because as the splash goes up on that meter into the red zone, you know that it's going up pretty high. it doesn't measure the volume, but it goes up high. that was a little bit splash. and hardly any splash by wu and

she's winning the contest. >> here's christina loukas, and that was one of the things christina loukas addressed with her association with kenny armstrong for these olympic games. they did discuss these in the prelims. but she's slimmer. kenny armstrong doesn't believe in weight training. much more yoga, pi la tees. he uses the phrase now that christina looks the part. she's leaner and i think would help on the edges? >> he wants her very streamlined as she goes through the waerkt but with a very strong core, very important in diving. nice. now that is a better entry than christina was performing in the preliminaries. both she and cassidy krug are going to improve in their

scores. because of the better entries that they're hitting in these semifinals. very nice. >> there's the parents, george and patty loukas. they've become well-known because they own mccovey bear lounge outside of wrigley field. emilie haymaneymans, who has eld herself into ninth place. the top 12 advance. >> i would bet on emilie heymans 100% of the time, because she's been around for so long, this is her fourth olympic games. she's won four olympic medals in synchronized diving as well as individual diving. and she just knows how to

compete and has gone from being very, very proficient on the platform to being a terrific springboard diver. >> emilie said she's going to dive maybe one more year, but this is her last olympics. and it looks like she has survived. >> now sharleen stratton. she has been very steady in her second olympics. >> oh yeah, stratton is in. as we see the fans adoringly cheer on the aussies. stratton seventh in this event in 2008, and saw her teammate

matt mitchum win the only gold medal for any other country other than china and he did it on the 10 meter platform. >> stratton should be through. matt mitchum will go head-to-head here next weekend with tom daley and two american hopefuls in the men's platform. this diver has been very impressive. jennifer abel, looks to be a sure bet to advance. >> she is so tremendously athletic. and she has that strong core that kenny armstrong wanted and has actually achieved with christina loukas. you see her way above the springboard. she has the olympic rings tattooed on her right foot. >> just 20 years old, already in her second games and she will

make her first individual final. cagnotto is in third place. >> oh, that's a nice entry. cagnotto has the ability to match the cleanness of the chinese entries. she has beautiful lines. we see the stretch. and the only thing that is a little bit lacking in her diving is sometimes her back arches a bit too much. but look, no splash in the red zone there. >> and that's judged well. 8.5s and 9s. so cagnotto will be a medal contender tomorrow. and now, of course, the two chinese will as well. he zi is so good, she had to

wait. she couldn't make an olympic team until the six-time medalist retired. >> and she needed 8.5s to go ahead of cagnotto and i don't think she's going to get it. you can see coach not all that thrilled with this dive. i want you to watch the entry. just a couple of times she has missed entries. it's not so bad to have to refill the pool, but it's a little splashy. >> still, he is through. but the dive sing so far in the prelims and semis would lead you to believe that wu minxia is going to be the leader overall. pat mccormick, great american diver, won four gold medals all in individual competition.

semifinal. and again, all of the expected contenders advance. tania cagnotto. the americans got through without drama. and in the top 12, the unfortunate news for the 17-year-old hannah starling from great britain. she missed by .075 of a point from advancing. but she will have two days and nights of incredible memories. for the americans, cassidy krug in her first olympics, and her teammate christina loukas in her second, will both dive against wu in the springboard finals tomorrow.

>> i was pretty solid again, just like yesterday. consistent with my dives and overall i'm pretty happy. >> you left yesterday with your coach kenny armstrong wanting you to work on the entries. as you look forward to tomorrow's finals, what will your focus be for tomorrow? >> tomorrow, you know, i'm just going to get after all my dives. i'm not going the hold back at all. it's the finals, so might as well just go big. >> christina, probably easier said than done. how do you do that? how do you let go in an olympic finals? >> you know, sometimes i just hold back a little bit. you know, being aly cautious. but tomorrow's finals, so, you know, just get after everything and be aggressive. >> we'll let christina walk down the line as cassidy krug joins us. looked like you were a little calmer today. describe the difference between yesterday and today. >> i definitely felt better today. it was good to have one contest at the olympics under my belt already. i felt calmer. i felt more confident. i feel like there is even more room for improvement tomorrow. >> a fifth place finish. we'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow. cassidy, congratulations. thank you.
