information including why some believe it was a hate crime. there was a huge sigh of relief north of sacramento this afternoon when a tense hostage situation came to a peaceful end. police say a 28-year-old man walked into a big five sporting goods store this morning with a shot gun, firing at least one round into the air. he held a half dozen shoppers and several employees hostage. one employ not involved in the situation said she is still in shock. >> little things. people try and break in all the time. nothing like -- i never seen any one that would do this. >> the manager barricaded under a desk sent information to police that convinced the gun man to come out. no word on his motive. >> and more now on a story we first brought you last night involving new questions about the safety of several bay area bridges including that new span

of the bay bridge. the "sacramento bee" is reporting an internal caltrans investigation turned up troubling problems with safety testing done on four bridges. the paper claims that caltrans discovered the potentially altered data while investigating previous claims of falsified tests on the new bay bridge span. the paper reports the altered data comes from more than one employee and now the new bay bridge isn't the only span that safety is called into question. tests on the richmond, dumbarton and benicia bridges are under scrutiny. caltrans responded saying in part it's irresponsible and premature to draw any conclusions. caltrans has one objective, to assure the driving public is safe on california's roads and bridges. caltrans reiterated it believes all of the state's bridges are safe. >> if you work in the east bay your commute might take longer in the next week.

several lanes of the benicia bridge will change as caltrans and the bay area toll authority install a new toll collection system. the work will happen between 8:00 in the evening and noon until friday, two fast track lanes will be closed during work hours. watch for directions on signs or tune in to "today in the bay" starting at 4:30 tomorrow morning. >> now to our exclusive coverage of the 2012 games. perhaps the fastest man in the world usain bolt raced today. don't worry, we won't give away the results as the men's 100 meter final will air in prime time tonight. there's plenty of excitement at the game as well. phil rogers joins us with the latest. >> reporter: hi, diane. you may remember last week there was a great deal of concern here in great britain over the country's seeming inability to win a gold medal. look at today's headline.

happy and glorious. all of that concern seems to have changed in a big way. great britain's gold medal euphoria continues. the nation erupted with joy as andy furry beat roger federer. >> for me this is the biggest win of my life. that's for sure. >> it follows a super saturday that put britain in third place for medals, the best day in over 100 years. even some of the country's red royal mail boxes are turning to gold. after a singles championship saturday, serena williams paired with sister venus to win in doubles, their third olympic gold as a team. this morning the women's marathon raced past the city's iconic sites. americans placed tenth and 11th. and the man with the record for

news reporting from london. diane, back to you. >> all right. it was an exciting and nail biting day for water polo fans especially in the bay area. check it out. dozens of family and friends gathered in san francisco to cheer on danville sisters jessica and maggie stephans. they have been one of the major reasons for the team's success. a total of 12 in her first olympics. the u.s. went on to beat italy in the quarterfinals 9-6. the family says water polo kind of runs in the blood. >> all the aunts and uncles played at some point, a lot of them played in college. so all the kids are playing. it was the family sport. >> today's win sets up a

watching. oscar pistorius, the run here is also a double amputee continues to inspire athletes. this is video of his race yesterday to finish second in the heat and advance to the semifinals of the 400 meters which happened today. he came up short, though today, making it to the finals. his nickname is blade runner and despite his loss he has inspired many including many here in the bay area. creighton wong is one of them. he has competed in several triathlons. >> you have the opportunity to basically get the best out of what we've got, and so to me when i see oscar doing his thing, you know, all of us can aspire to do those things. >> oscar pistorius is expected to run the 4 x 400 relays at the olympics starting on thursday. then he will try to defend his titles at the paralympics. for more coverage of the 2012 london olympics all you have to

>> happening right now, thousands of space fans are descending on nasa ames in mountain view in hopes of watching history. in a few hours engineer will attempt the curiosity on mars. here's the catch. the landing procedure for the project has never been tried before. what's going on? >> reporter: diane, there is a festival-like atmosphere here on the grounds of nasa ames. music, food trucks and booths but most importantly there are a couple of giant inflatable tv

screens. this is what we'll be watching tonight as the rover curiosity makes its landing. it's not going to be routine. the procedure to land curiosity is something that nasa has never done. it's dubbed the seven minutes of terror. that means it will take seven minutes from the time the spacecraft hits the top of the mars atmosphere until it hits the ground. in that seven minutes a parachute will be deployed, rockets will fire and cables lower the rover to the surface taking it from 32,200 miles an hour, to zero. this is actually a mission that's been decades in the making and by that i mean scientists and engineers came up with a lot of the innovations involved decades ago. >> and had the stamina to spend a decade or more bringing that dream to fruition and sending it to mars. those are the individual instruments. you have the integration aspect with a team involving 250

scientists, and a large number of engineers bringing all of those things together to happen in the right place at the right time. it's an amazing endeavor. >> reporter: we expect curiosity to land at about 10:30 tonight and by that time it will have traveled for eight months covering 350 million miles, all at a cost of $2.5 billion. we'll be here right in front of the big screen watching along side thousands of people and also the engineers and scientists so involved in this project. there are a couple of thousand people here who preregistered to watch on the grounds. unfortunately, the registration is now closed. however, you can still watch it streamed live on nasa's website. nbc bay area news. >> thank you. that superman roller coaster at six flags reopened today. faster than a speeding bullet it was not. not at first. a power glitch prevented it from

launching at a safe speed. you remember a week ago 12 people were stranded on the ride at about 150 feet up. firefighters used a crane to release the cars from the track. all 12 riders were returned safely to the ground. today no one was on the ride when the glitch happened. engineers managed to get it up and running after a short delay. >> just ahead, a check on your work week forecast which includes some big changes.

they were all day long. so skies are beginning to clear and look at this. we have warm spots today. fairfield got up to 81. livermore 80. over to concord and napa, still very warm, 78 and 75. even in san jose 79 the high. already 72 in san jose. gilroy 79. up to the peninsula, 64 in san francisco, san mateo as well, comfortable in wine country. look at the shower activity. intense thunderstorms popped up across central nevada earlier. even near lake tahoe yesterday. that cloud cover that was with us yesterday, that's moving out of the picture. here is the big change headed our way this week. a big area of high pressure. that's not only going to bring warm temperatures for us in the bay area, we're talking all the way up into places like seattle, portland, you're going to look at temperatures in the upper 90s. so for us at home, what it means we had a few 70s today, even a few 80s. but the 90s return as we head to tuesday. so we'll start to get toasty

once we head to the middle of the week. i wouldn't rule out the potential for triple digits in places like livermore as we head to wednesday and thursday. start the day tomorrow, you'll notice the fog, keep the fog in place at least through about midday. by the afternoon hours, plenty of sun and blue sky for the start of the work week. 90 tomorrow, same at gilroy, san jose 85. walnut creek 88. closer to the water in the bay, 71 san francisco, 76 in oakland. we're all following the london olympics, here you go, the forecast monday, tuesday and wednesday, does include some sun but also includes rain tuesday and wednesday, those athletes will be competing with showers as well. monday looks to be a dry day. the three-day forecast, the warm temperatures back to 92, as we head to tuesday. 97 for wednesday. i don't know, diane. 99, hot enough on thursday? >> absolutely. lovely. >> maybe 101 as we head to wednesday, thursday. it will be warm.

a san francisco athlete is set to run in her second olympics tomorrow. joe introduces us to shannon whose athletic career got off to an unusual start. >> reporter: there comes a point in time when a top athlete will trace their success back to a moment in childhood. shannon rowberry draws that line to her irish grandma. >> i broke my leg and she decided to put me in dancing to strengthen my bones. i fell in love with irish dancing. >> reporter: she spent ten years competing and was eventually ranked 7th in the world. in many ways she says it prepared her for a career as an olympic runner. >> it was funny because i realized that the length of irish dancing step was almost exactly the same as the length of the 800 meters.

>> the san francisco native veered into running in high school after a short detour into soccer. an impulse she joined the cross country team at high school. >> i decided i would go to cross country practice and went and you know, did the five-mile run was like this is nothing. until i got home and couldn't walk. >> reporter: the walls of the sacred heart gym show her success. the former p.e. teacher said her determination and personality made an impression. >> to see somebody so wonderful have the success she's having is awesome. she deserves every bit of accolades she gets. >> reporter: after college rowbury qualified for the 2008 games in china where she took 7th in the 1500 meters, the fastest time for an american woman. now her days are spent training for the london olympics where she hopes to once again draw on

her past. >> moving forward i know what it's going to be like out there and hopefully that will help give me an advantage. >> reporter: rowbury figures training in san francisco gives her an advantage. the international flavor helps her feel at home in the world where every stride is a reminder early advice from a wise irish grandmother went a long way. >> thanks to olympic athletes such as carrie walsh ice bathing is going viral. walsh tweeted out this picture of her soaking in an ice bath. several other olympians have shared pictures of themselves and teammates recovering in ice baths after working out or competing. the trend is believed to have started by a u.s. gymnast and pla kay la maroney who tweeted last week. she looks cold.

and it is the end of an era. the most dominant in olympic history and it's pure gold. at an olympics, uncommon talent is everywhere. but in their biggest moments, most memorable performers summon something else entirely. four years ago, he sped away in astonishing fashion. tonight, he hopes to make lightning strike twice.

after being outticked at the end in beijing, london brings a chance to hold on this time for gold, appearances alone make him distinctive but on the track, it's inarguable. no one does more with what they were given. on the sand, their brilliance is in a partnership perfectly hone, one that seems only to sharpen when stakes are highest. after helping to vault the fab five to victory, she returns to take off twice again. talent got them here. but now london calls for more. at the games of the xxx olympiad.
