the connector is currently closed, a half hour scheduled for that construction. on the lower deck out of san francisco heading past treasure island reports of a disabled vehicle blocking a lane on that lower deck of the bay bridge. we saw slowing. there may have been a traffic break. allow extra minutes as you pass the scene for safety sake. >> thank you. >> this took a while and been a long time coming but nasa's latest mars rover on the red planet. >> the space agency successfully landed the opportunity rover after an eight-month journey. stephanie chuang is live with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you both. history in the making. thousands of people around the bay area didn't want to miss all of the excitement so they came to nasa ames. also here last night was a research scientist who joins us. he works here.

michael, thank you for waking up so early. first of all, describe to us what it was like. we knew it was going to hit at 10:30. >> so, we showed up here and there were a crowd of thousands sitting around. we were anticipating what was going to happen. how close were we going to get. and it was exciting. >> is there a loud cheer? >> oh, yeah. each step along the way occurred and we were good. >> reporter: now michael, tell me about curiosity, the rover, what it is, what is its objective and why should the viewers care? >> in some ways it's what its name is, about our curiosity about a planet. so it's a large rover and it's exploring a crater. that crater has lines that indicate there was once water possibly in its environment. we're trying to figure out what was there, was it conducive to

scrapes to back pain. one of the babies was air lifted to children's hospital. >> religious community reeling following a mass shooting after a worship service in wisconsin. a lone gun man entered a sikh temple in suburban milwaukee and opened fire. a total of six people were killed, three more seriously hurt. when police did arrive the gunman shot at officers several times before officers killed that shooter. this morning police investigating that motive. the sikh religion is not affiliated with the muslim faith but sikhs in the bay area say they are often mistaken for muslims. >> despite us having nearly a million in this country, being here almost 100 years, that we still struggle to prove who we are. and that somebody could go into a place of peace that they could pick that spot to do something so bad. it's shocking.

>> san jose police met with leaders at the sikh temple here to talk about security. they say they would not increase their presence in the area but will keep an eye out for suspicious activity. >> police are investigating a double shooting in east san jose this morning. it happened around 8:30 last night not far from james lick high school. two male, one adult, one teen were found with life threatening injuries. police believe the shooting might be gang related. a san jose realtor is due in court to answer questions of allegedly running a ponzi scheme. jill silvey is charged. prosecutors say she bilked people out of more than a million dollars and used the money to finance her lavish lifestyle. silvey is scheduled to enter a plea this morning on 44 felony fraud counts. >> no doubt about it, he is still the world's fastest man.

bolting into a new record all last night in a flash. >> no kidding. usain bolt took home another gold medal breaking his own record with a time of 9.63 seconds. .05 off his world record pace. he is the first man to win back-to-back sprints since carl lewis. justin gatlin took home the bronze. >> looking good t pair taking on italy in the quarterfinals last night. beat them in straight sets. no worries. walsh and may-treanor moving to the semifinals tuesday against china. >> on the gymnastic floor there was disappointments for mckayla maroney. came in a heavy favorite to win the gold.

by about noon mostly clear. the marine layer starting to push out to sea. your temperatures are going to be comfortable. look at your highs. not too hot yet. we're going to crank up the heat later on this week. 65 in san francisco. 82 in redwood city. 73 degrees down in santa cruz. so we'll have your full forecast. it's 4:40 now. check that drive. here's mike. >> less happening for the bay bridge. we're glad about that. we have the stall lower deck getting out of san francisco, slowing at treasure island that is clear. that slowing should clear as well. the crew just moving things from the lane on the peninsula, we had an issue as well n. is northbound 101 around oyster point. then an accident and it looks like it's clearing. i saw slowing that has cleared from the sensors as well. use cautions past oyster point. north fast airport there was slowing as you approach exits.

no big deal now. you lose a couple of lanes but light flow. san jose, 101, northbound under the 680/280 interchange. a smooth easy drive. the east bay fremont, 880 and no problems here past the truck scales. looks like we have digital delays. even the internet has trouble waking up. >> my gosh. 4:41. >> yes, we're heading into the final weeks ahead of that party convention that will go on for both the democrats and the republicans as the election season gets into full swing, feels like it's full swing for a long time. speakers announced for the republican convention. >> and a family affair, cousins, uncles, friends gather to cheer on two sisters as they go for the gold in london. why the family says they are not surprised with their performance.

enough to boost confidence slightly but keep alive the idea that the fed may step in soon with a new stimulus program. asia and european markets are higher at the moment there is no specific economic data coming out in the united states today but we get report this is week on productivity t trade deficit and import prices. on friday the dow jumped to close at 13,096 and the nasdaq added 58 to close under 3,000. knight capital, the trading firm received $400 million in new capit capital. the deal will reportedly allow knight to open its doors for business today after it suffered a crippling $440 million in losses last week. knight was responsible for a software glitch wednesday that flooded the markets with millions of bad stock trades. in other news, iag, the parent

start out in san francisco. it's going to be hot inland but not as hot later this week. we have an area of low pressure over the weekend that is now heading out to the north. high pressure is building in from the four corners region. that's going to bring about a significant warm-up through the midsection and end of this week but not too bad today and tomorrow. temperatures staying in the low 90s inland. and that translates to the upper 70s bayside and the upper 60s at the coast for now. you'll hit those 80s. looks like close to 80 in san francisco toward the end of the week. 91 today in concord. we're going to see a warmer than average week towards the end, saturday and sunday looking hot as well. not as hot today as it's going to be later on. wednesday, 74 degrees bay side, 66 at the coast. keep in mind breezy today. and a little special effect for you this morning. right now back to you guys. >> pretty fansy stuff there. i like that. >> it was a nail-biting day full of drama for the water polo fans

in the bay area as the u.s. women's water polo team battled italy. dozens of family and friends gathering yesterday in san francisco to cheer on danville sisters jessica and maggie stephans. the sisters are one of the major reasons for the team's success in london. maggie had another goal in that game that gives her 12 in her very first olympics. she is on fire. the u.s. women beat italy in the quarterfinals by a final score of 9-6. the stephans family, water polo runs in its blood. >> all of the aunts and uncles played at some point and a lot of them played in college. so, all of the kids are playing. it's the family sport. >> yesterday's win sets up a

semifinal showdown with favorite australia that will take place on tuesday. coming up tonight, get ready for this, more track and field, the finals of the men's 400 and 400 meter hurdles. beach volleyball quarterfinals and the individual events for gymnastics, men's rings, vault and women's uneven bars. >> still ahead from buckingham palace, spectators have plenty to see. it's what they be can't see that's generating chatter. some are complaining about the olympic caldron. >> a look at the san mateo bridge. no complaints about in. i'll show you what may affect you crossing another of our bridges coming up.

>> 4:53. the super man roller coaster at six flags reopened but it certainly was not faster than a speeding bullet. a power glitch prevented it from launching at a safe speed. a week ago 12 people were stranded on the ride for a couple of hours, 150 feet up. firefighters used a crane to release the cars to bring the riders safely to the ground. no one was on the ride yesterday when the glitch happened. park engineers managed to get it running after a short delay. >> folks got to see a little of

the olympics. >> the annual fremont festival of the arts and our host with the most, mike inouye leading the troops. nbc bay area a proud sponsor. they had gymnastics demonstrations from future olympians. look at this guy go. he's ripped. wow. very impressed. i like this too. the festival no doubt had a spectacular turnout. i'mxd bummed out we didn't see mike inouye with his hand off spring. >> we're limited how much of that we're allowed to show. also insurance, they would have had to cover me for falling so badly. let's look to the roadways. no problems as far as anybody falling or accidents. we have construction, however, northbound as you head past the toll plaza. two lanes are blocked for the next week, until noon. that may slow some folks out of the east bay into the north bay at the benicia bridge toll plaza

till noon. no major issues as far as slowing right now. i'll track that all morning. we have slowing that showed up on the east shore freeway. they may have equipment leaving the area. the construction zone which has the connector from westbound 580 to east bound 80 closed, heading around the berkeley curve. san pablo avenue and you're fine. a live look shows you what things are like on the peninsula. fine here, too. 101 northbound past university avenue, the tail lights away from the construction zone. no construction now. as the crews arrive on the side of the road the distraction hits. keep that in mind the beginning of your commute on the peninsula. >> thanks a lot. >> 4:55 now. no doubt about it the london olympics have seen a killer mix of sports and all of the sight seeing. >> so much to see. the city is like a living museum. one thing people haven't been able to see is that olympic caldron. the caldron is nestled inside

the olympic stadium out of view of passing spectators. very impressive, you've seen it here live. 25 feet tall, 204 individual torches representing the 204 countries participating in the games. fans love the artistry but the location getting mixed reviews. >> get it out there. put it on the screen. put it somewhere that people can see it. it's so beautiful. it's a piece of art in its own rite. get it out there and let's all see it. >> i think it's fantastic where it is now. brilliant. >> are you from london? >> i am. >> we know it's there. we don't need to see it. >> can we trust you? >> yes. i'm british. definitely. >> it's the spirit. it's not about the flame. it's about the spirit. >> i say boy, getting some face painting on there. the next summer games, the folks in rio have said their caldron will be on full display.

>> good morning to you. thanks for joining us. seconds away from 5:00. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning everybody. i'm jon kelley. let's get started with those london olympic games where jamaican sprinter usain bolt he earned the tightful fastest man. he does it again with the gold in the 100 meters. nothing can stop this guy. not even a drunk fan in the stands who threw a bottle out on the track. the guy's a complete idiot. raj mathai is live in london to kick off our coverage. raj, no doubt crazy watching bolt run not only for the track but then some crazy person in the stands. >> reporter: yeah. well, we'll get to all of that. it was the big ticket item of the olympics, this is one everyone come to a standstill to watch. we woke up in london, the times of london, front page.

the rocket man, usain bolt. when you're this good, you get a full double cover. how about that. it wasn't even close in what we saw. in fact, let's start with the problem that we saw last night. we mentioned the bottle. it was thrown before the race started. we have still pictures of it now. thankfully it did not hit any of the olympians. the man who threw the bottle was arrested, he is in jail, not sure what charges he will be rung up on but it won't be a good turnout for the gentleman who threw the bottle. for the race, let's get to the good stuff. here it is. under 10 seconds, 9.63 seconds to be exact, usain bolt did it in beijing, you mentioned that, he did it last night in london, the first time someone won back-to-back titles in the 100 meters since carl lewis in the 1980s. we remember carl lewis. usain bolt classic. he was injured. a lot of people thought he wouldn't win, maybe not even medal but obviously
